100 X $6.00 a roll. That's 2/3 the price of the scanner itself. Makes one
wonder... if they just wanted to unload scanners they could just drop the
price and keep the film.

Very Odd IMO.

I agree. I'm guessing that they've realized that the scanner is overpriced
compared to the competition, but I can't imagine why they're doing this instead
of just reducing the price.

Here's their offer:

It's kind of overpriced in the current market (around $900.00 I think)
because
it doesn't have the digital ICE dust scratch removal and it's
construction is
decidedly flimsy. On the plus side, it comes with 10 36-exposure rolls of
Kodak
Supra 400 and until Jan 31, it comes with a coupon for 100 free rolls of
Kodak
professional film. Yep, 100 rolls. That brings the effective price down by
a
lot! (I expect when the rebate offer runs out they'll lower the price of
the
scanner to a more reasonable level.)

Let's see, give them a $600 discount off the scanner or give them $600 in
film which costs us only $250... An accounting/accountant mentality as the
$600 in film ultimately comes out of your total US Market sales.

So are there any stand alone dust/scratch removal programs like Nikon's
'digital ice'
which could be added to this scanner? With a $300 net price, we are starting
to talk about a price I could afford.

RE: Just got my Kodak RFS 3600 scanner working - WOW!

2001-12-14 Thread Rob Brigham

There are software scratch removal programs, but they do not work very
well and degrade the image significantly. ICE is different because it
is a 'part-hardware' solution where the scanner makes and extra IR pass
to detect the emulsion structure and surface defects. In this way,
surface imperfections can be ironed out with little or no degradation in
unaffected areas. Obviously the scanner needs to be designed with this
in mind and the Kodak almost definately does not have an IR head.

In addition the the lower cost of giving free film, is also gets people
to use Kodak film who might otherwise have gone to Fuji, so it promotes
the brand. You may just like the film after getting to know it with 100
rolls, so you might stick with it in future...

Not necessarily so. Might the ploy be to encourage more usage - processing --
for cheap film and encourage use of K film where competitive product might
have been used otherwiseand protect list pricing during what me a rather
slow period for sales?Kodak seems to have had a hard time over the last few
years, I keep hoping they'll do better.

I think it's a good marketing move. The guy or gal who buys the scanner
will be shooting Kodak film, and he'll become rather proficient at
scanning that particular film stock. (Those who have done a lot of
scanning know that with time and practice you develop a technique for a
particular film, and your results improve tremendously.) That means that
down the road they'll continue selling film to this customer.

Hmm, I'd like to see a comparison of your Minolta with the Nikon

Got any comparative images to show us ??

I'm just getting into the Photography gig and I got myself a Scan Dual II in
nov. At the moment 2820 dpi seems a bit for me. Would be very interested to
see how it compares to the Kodak.

Thanks.

I didn't think going from the 2820dpi of my Minolta Scan Multi up to the
3600dpi
of the Kodak scanner would be that big a jump in quality. Wow, was I
wrong! I
just did my first scan and it's absolutely amazing! The level of detail
revealed
in a 35mm slide has to be seen to be believed. I'm doing a small
exhibition of
my running photos in February and I'll definitely be scanning everything
on this
baby. In fact, everything I intend to print (other than medium format, of
course) is going to get scanned on this from now on. I'm very impressed.

It's kind of overpriced in the current market (around $900.00 I think)
