Welcome to a prodigal son! While you were gone Pentax went through a few transformations and then finally produced a FF body with a whole family of new lenses. Negative reaction from this list (e.g., the 18-180/2.0 should have been a 17-178/1.4, the new 200/2.8 macro should have been a 197, 15FPS with a buffer of only 45 RAW shots were inadequate for fast paced sports like cricket, etc.) convinced Pentax to withdraw the whole line-up within a few weeks. ;-) We are waiting to see what happens next. Other than that, things are much the same. Sometimes I think the Vulture should have been the PDML Official Bird rather than the lovable cormorant. stan On Sep 5, 2013, at 5:28 PM, Bruce wrote: Hello, I thought I would introduce myself. I have stayed active shooting Pentax while I have been gone. A little nudge from Rick Womer got me thinking about the list again so I decided to join and see what is happening. It will take me a bit to get back up to speed and to see who might still be around from when I was on the list. It's nice to have someone else from Southern Italy here! :-) About the DSLR question, I have just a little experience with both the *istD and the 300D, but comparing the two side by side and, mainly, looking through both finders, it's difficult to fall in love with the Canon body (although I'm sure that the final results may be perfectly comparable). On the 300D it seems to look through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars... RE: Just joined the list
From the background you describe, I think you would hate the 300D, its cy build quality and lack of manual control. The 10D and *istD seems to be so close as far as performance goes for that not to be your decider. With the 10D you get better built magnesium body, Image stabilisation (if you buy the IS lenses) and USM (AF motors in the lens rather than body, which is quieter and possibly faster too - although the latter is arguable). You also get a much bigger, heavier body, possibly unsolvable AF problems depending on your luck and expensive proprietary batteries. With the *istD you get a much smaller, lighter body, better viewfinder (so I am told), K mount (semi)compatibility and use of standard AA rechargeables. You also get a plastic body (albeit still very solid and at least metal chassis unlike the 300D), and no future commitment to IS or USM. There is a guy on dpreview who has both, and would get the *istD over the 10D (only by a whisker though) if he had the choice again. It is, however, a personal choice. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 23 October 2003 07:41 To: pentax-discuss Cc: pentax-discuss Subject: Just joined the list Hello. I don't subscribe to the idea that any one camera brand or format, or any one technology, is better than another. That said, I'm looking at buying my first DSLR, and am wondering if anyone here has experience with the camera and can discuss its pros and cons based on having used the gear for a while, and also how it may compare to the new Canon 300D and the 10D, which are my other considerations. Also, will my older manual focus Pentax K-mount lenses work on the *istD? Re: Just joined the list
Welcome Tyrone. You'v found the right placeg Try this link in regard to your starkistD questions. Its the mail archive's,scroll back a bit and you can find some threads on the D and lenses and experiments by several others. http://www.mail-archive.com/pentax-discuss%40pdml.net/ I have the Nikon D1 so a starkist D is not high on my list, this year anyway. gI too have many Pentax 35 mm cameras and the 6x7,which i think is great. Possible some enablement in the 35mm format very soon,as is Frank. Looking forward to seeing your work on the PUG soon. Dave in Canada Hello. Re: Just joined the list
That's a wise words of the experienced man. Naturally, the best tool depends on the job in hand. And even more naturally, it would be illogical to assume that one brand has all the best tools for all the jobs. LOL I just sold a photo made with a 4mp PS digital - it happened to be the perfect tool for the job because it happened to be the camera that was handy when the shot presented itself. Fully, only if they are of KA mount. Partially, and quite limitedly so if they are pure K mount. In what way are pure K mount lenses limited. They ain't got many features to limit LOL Kind regards from Tel Aviv suburbia. I have very dear friends in T-A and nearby areas. Small world. Hello, Rob! Thanks for your rather thorough reply. I've a couple of questions at this point: What do you mean by possibly unsolvable AF problems for the 10D, and also, what do you mean by (semi)compatibility of K-mount lenses? Thanks. See http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1028message=6442468 and some of the replys. Look almost anywhere on the web and find references to the Canon focus problems. Some say it is a lot of fuss about nothing - possibly they got lucky in the samples they got? Who knows, but there is some kind issue there which Canon don't seem to be able/willing to deal with. Its probably hard to judge how that will affect you (if at all) until it is too late to change your mind. (semi)K mount relates to the fact that older lenses without the auto aperture setting on the ring will not meter as easily on the *ist. I think this is K and M lenses - A, F, FA etc are all OK. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 23 October 2003 15:12 To: pentax-discuss Subject: RE: Just joined the list Hello, Rob! Re: Just joined the list
having spent a little while this weekend playing with a Digital Rebel (aka 300D) that a friend bought, i think its build quality is significantly higher than the average PS digital camera and that is what will matter. if i wasn't already committed to Pentax, i would not hesitate to get a 300D to upgrade from my current digital cameras. each one of my two most recent PS digital cameras cost more. I am not totally clear on all the features, but it seems it sets aperture for one and that is hard or impossible to override. I wouldn't like that. Actually, the 300D (Rebel Digital in Canada) has full manual, aperture priority, shutter priority, program, and full auto modes, just like film SLRs do. It's missing a spot meter and flash exp. comp., but that's about it. chris
