Re: New Limited Lenses?
If Pentax doesn't introduce new Limited lenses in September Lenses - as in more than one? I doubt it - Pentax has so far only released one Limited Lens lens at a time. And just curious - had Pentax NOT released any Limited Lenses, would you have changes already? - Original Message - From: John Coyle Subject: RE: New Limited Lenses? I don't see the point of going to Leica, where you're range of focal lengths is basically limited to 35-135, I believe, and you are going to shell out big bucks to get into the system at all. I can see the point. Build quality and product support are very important. Pentax doesn't want to offer support to owners of cameras prior to the present MZ series. You can count on them dropping support for the PZ series as soon as they legally can. I have one LX, at the repair shop that may be unrepairable, due to parts unavailability. Leica offers real product support to their customers, and never made a camera that required service every 1500 exposures. William Robb - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Maybe true in Canada (for all I know). I have one LX, at the repair shop that may be unrepairable, due to parts unavailability. They do provide parts for the LX where I live. Leica offers real product support to their customers, and never made a camera that required service every 1500 exposures. Neither did Pentax.. Anyhow, last year I received price estimates for typical repair of the Asahiflex. Thats good enough for me. All Pentax slr's ever produced are still being serviced by Pentax where I live. Re: New Limited Lenses?
Dear Alexander, I sympathize with your feeling towards Pentax and their speed of Ltd. lens production. I keep waiting for to see what they will do to the ZX-5n or if a Ltd. body will come out. I too have thought about jumping ship, but have decided to stay the course. When you compare Pentax with Voigtlander and the number of bodies and lenses they have produced since V's introduction in '99 (I think), Pentax seems to pale. Maybe Voigtlander is a bad comparison, since they have had to introduce an entire range of lenses and bodies, but they do seem to come out with a new lens and body every couple of months. Pentax just seems to rehash the ZX/MZ line into various permutations (with the MZ-S being the exception) and introduce various amateur level zooms. Maybe Pentax has it's hands full producing two medium format camera systems along with the 35mm line, P S cameras, digital line and binoculars as well. When you stand back and look at the scope of their products, it's pretty impressive. Still, we in the 35mm line do seem to wait forever sometimes for new high quality products. By the way, if you still decide to sell your stuff, put me down for the 31mm. Jim - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: New Limited Lenses?
If Pentax doesn't introduce new Limited lenses in September I'm dumping my MZ-S and Spotmatic and switching to the Leica M-system. VERY unhappy with Pentax's LACK of follow-up on the exceptional 31mm, 43mm 77mm Limited lenses! Perhaps you were asking Pentax to replace all lenses with LIMITED lenses? I doubt that will ever happen. Besides, I would never be able to afford them all anyway. regards, Alan Chan _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. BTW - how much do the limited lenses cost? Approximatelly, of course. Not that I could afford them, but at least I'd get an idea how long I would have to save to afford one. I think the price is about HK$2900(43/1.9), 4600(77/1.8) 6000(31/1.8) in HK. You should expect to pay more in other countries. Some, if not most of those plastic Pentax lenses are easily capable of work that's on the same plane as their Leitz equivalents. (Yes, I've used several of them.) Especially in the hands of an experienced photographer who exploits the strengths and avoids the weaknesses in the system. Also: I thought that the 43ltd was followed up by the 77 which was followed up by the 31 ... and then there was the MZ-S, which may not be quite up to the standard set by the limited lenses - but it is getting much closer with its metal body The Leica is a very fine system, but for many photographic purposes an SLR is simply a better tool. Now I would get it if you said you were switching to an R8 I've shot with a Leica my rangefinder for not quite 30 of my 39 years. It's like camping, no AE, no AF, back to basics, etc - it makes me feel good, and I love using the camera my great grandfather used. And I know that the Leica system is capable of fantastic results. I'm glad I learned on it. But I mostly use a Pentax when I simply want to make photographs. I go places and do things with my cameras where I wouldn't want a beautiful and incredibly expensive M7+35/2 asph. around my neck. I simply don't need that much to get a great photographic result. I know I can get results that are indistinguishable or even better (since I would be willing to put them in harm's way) with my MZ5 and a plastic 35/2 FA... I simply don't understand the attitude expressed in your statement. But good luck anyway! Chris L. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. This is I think OT. But why do they call Limited lens when they are contstantly in production? Seems odd. Love to own one though. Re: New Limited Lenses? Don't Mean to Rant ...
Chris asks good questions about WHY I'd want a Leica rangefinder over a 35mm SLR. First, most of my photography is now done on a medium format SLR (so I don't need another SLR.). I'm looking for a rugged (I beat my equipment up pretty good), compact 35mm system as a light travel kit. I shoot primarily B W using a modified Zone system, which means I want tack sharp lenses with high contrast. And, lastly, I neither use nor want auto anything!!! I grew up on a Spotmatic with their solid lenses. And I've owned both the PZ-1p and MZ-S. I love the Limited lenses, but would like a basic five-lens kit; say, 22mm, 31mm, 43mm, 77mm, 120mm. I really don't think that asking for a quality five-lens kit is very demanding!!! (Especially, since the 43mm Limited lens was introduced FIVE years ago.) Sorry, but waiting on Pentax has drawn my nerves rather tight! (And this from a former PENTAX FAMILY member!) Alexander Grigolia - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: New Limited Lenses? Whatever.
That's cool, Rob. I have absolutely no interest in a urinary contest either. I simply want to have a spirited, if not passionate discussion of things Pentax and photography in general. ...but I've found quite the opposite... But what's the opposite of what I asserted? That I don't get great results with a 35/2FA? That I should take an M7+35/2 asph. where I wouldn't feel comfortable? That rangefinders are the best tools for all photographic jobs? I didn't really assert anything (outside of my own experiences) except that I don't understand an attitude that says I'm going to Leica M because Pentax isn't putting out new limited lenses fast enough. What's up with that? If they pumped bunches of them out they wouldn't really be limited anymore, would they? I should say at this point that I feel the ltd. lenses are great (wish I had 'em all), and that they represent an excellent value compared to Leitz glass. I simply think some of the standard FA prime lenses represent an even better value (fantastic, really) compared to the Leitz stuff. I'm thinking of the 24/2, 35/2 the 50/1.4, especially. The limiteds are *not* the *only* lenses that Pentax makes that give great, if not fantastic results! If that were true, that *would be* a good reason to switch brands. The prejudice against plastic-bodied lenses (and cameras, IMHO) is nonsensical. I hope I've communicated my thoughts a bit more clearly... Regards, Chris L. PS: Alexander, I've just read your latest post and it does indeed sound like you have good reasons for wanting an Leica M. I just don't think that your feelings about the plastic Pentax lenses are among them (the good reasons). I think if you have two or three more years to wait you'll have your ltd. lenses but would it kill ya to use an 20/2.8 FA and a 135/2.8 FA while that came to pass? Way OT: I see the problem with Leitz glass thusly: you simply can't have the ultimate in optics and mechanical construction in the same series of Leitz glass. The current asph. lenses are the best optically and the 1950s lenses are the ultimate in mechanical construction... it is too bad, really... ;) - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
