If you do that and later find an external USB hard drive suddenly
becoming write protected for no apparent reason, let me know. I just
spent several hours Googling for a solution after this happened to my
backup drive. Apparently it's not all that uncommon with Windows 7,
with Western Digital drives seemingly most (but not exclusively)
affected.

A number of suggested 'fixes' came to light and I eventually found one
that worked, although a lot of users complained that the fix either
didn't work for them or turned out to be temporary. We'll see

The most annoying thing is a the total silence from both Microsoft and
Western Digital on what seems to be a surprisingly common problem.

Re: PDML Photo Annual 2010: Uploading now

By the way: Even though the book is being printed by Blurb again this
year, I designed the whole thing in proper page layout software (Adobe
InDesign) rather than the dreadful Blurb BookSmart software. It made
design and layout vastly easier while also giving many more options
for overall design. Things like text flow between frames are worlds
better. Editing and revising are a snap. Fewer headaches than last
year, to put it mildly.

The final pages are then exported as JPEGs and dropped into the Blurb
software for uploading. Pretty cool. The only downside is that
InDesign won't export JPEG files with embedded ICC profiles. Yes, in
2010 InDesign still won't embed ICC profiles in exported JPEGs (I'm
assuming this will be fixed with CS5 this fall), so I had to add the
ICC profiles in Photoshop. A quick Action automated the process.

So we get a much better book design (IMHO) and easier workflow as
well. Not a bad deal.

Fingers crossed you will have a proof copy you're satisfied with, to

I hope to have a pile of production versions by then. I just got my
order confirmation with an anticipated shipping date of April 15. It
ought to take about two days to reach me, as they have a printer in
Massachusetts. If it looks good I can place an order on the 17th or
18th and have books by early May. (Fingers crossed..)

Glad Jostein asked, I was afraid to :):)
crossing fingers as well.

By the way: Even though the book is being printed by Blurb again this

for overall design.

Sounds like you nailed it. Does Blurb provide the ICC profile for their
printing and paper? Can you use them in PhotoShop's Print Preview?

Yep. You can download their ICC profile and then soft proof in
Photoshop. Though, interestingly, they don't provide a separate
profile for premium paper. Presumably it's reasonably close to the
standard paper.

As for whether I nailed it... we'll see in a couple of weeks.

Mark,

That's still considerable amount of work.
Kudos to you for doing to!

I was just curious: why didn't you use PDF?
While I haven't looked at all the details, - Blurb seems to
allow uploading PDFs. And InDesign (CS3) can embed ICC profiles in those.

OK, the 2010 PDML book is in the can, as they say. It's uploading to
Blurb as I write this (should be done in about an hour).

It'll take about two weeks for me to get a copy to inspect. If it
looks good, or if there are only minor adjustments that need to be
made, it will become available to the general public at that point.

Thanks for the update, Mark! After thoroughly enjoying last year's
book over the past couple of weeks, I'm really looking forward to this
year's, especially if it's new, better, and improved.

Can I come over for a sneak peak once you get the proof? :-)
