2005-06-29 Thread Jostein
Finally got around to looking.

When you said you missed the moment by a few seconds, I assume you there were
more spectacular lighting in the clouds previously. From looking at the
midtones in your picture, I would guess that there's a lot of drama to bring
out in this picture if you play around with the contrast and/or levels. You may
be able to bring out the mood you experienced a few moments earlier from this
shot as well. After all, a CCD ship doesn't record reality the same way as our
eyes to. :-)

Regarding the plants in the foreground, I find them a bit distracting, but not
too bad since they're way out of focus. Personally, I think I would have
avoided having them in the picture at all. The landscape is already well
composed, with the field and the vegetation as foreground, the fjord as a
"middle-ground" and the mountains as background. It all balances well with the
drama in the sky, imo.

Cheers,
Jostein

Nonesense.

It was entirely positive. I was merely pointing out that there was some
rubbish going on in the foreground, and that a positive action would be
to go and tackle the subject again (you hinted that you pass the spot on
a work journey).

Photographers revisiting a scene many times in different weather and
lighting situations in order to study the many and varied ways said scene
can be captured on film or sensor, or even canvas for that matter, is
common.

Here's a tree I pass many times a year:

and a couple of years later...

<http://www.cottysnaps.com/snaps/landscapes/images/pic30.html>

I'm about due to have another go I reckon.

So here's a positive message. You did not want to have the plant so out
of focus at lower right, so go back to the scene and photograph it
again!

Of course, it is entirely possible that you did want the plant as such an
out of focus feature at lower right, in which case, it's not the plant
that is rubbish, the whole pic is!!!

Ditto. If you add foreground items to add depth, they need to be sharp. Look

My opinion:

The plants in the near foreground would add to the illusion of depth and
be an important compositional element if they were sharp. They are too
soft to be more than a distraction as shot.

I'm not to comment on such things, so I've been told. However
I will say that the term used to mean "blurry", but it may mean much
more than that now (not necessarily a good or bad thing).

And you believed him?

 You say you like it.

I do. For me it balanced the mountains and clouds in the distance.
Gave a sense of perspective and context. But, maybe you shouldn't
believe me, either...

Well, that's it, isn't it? We're working with changing circumstances,
sometimes quickly changing, so we grab what we can when we can. The
other thing, of course, is that it's all pretty subjective. One man's
rubbish is another man's balance. The reality is that neither Cotty
nor I are right or wrong, objectively. Subjectively we know what
works and doesn't work for ouselves - beyond that, we really can't say
much more.

Anyway, I'm off to work now - just got my first call of the day.

frank

Those are angry clouds! They make the pic, IMHO. Nice composition.
I like the foreground...

Hi!

I just had to stop, and try framing it.

As you see, there is another version online. What I've done is to convert
the raw file. Adjusted the exposure down about one step, added a bit more
highlights, and made it a tiny bit warmer (higher Kelvin). I've also hidden
an electric fence (cloning) in the middle ground down by the trees.

"Isn't it good, Norwegian Wood?" (Cotty, am I right with the quote?) :)

Tim, you did quite a job for the first-timer... In fact, it is quite a
good picture :). I like the way the cloud pattern leads my eye to the
top of that mountain...

Memories, memories...

I like it. The exposure seems perfect, as you've captured *plenty* of
details in the clouds *and* the mountains (whereas, I would have certainly
either blown out the clouds or lost the mountain details in shadows)...
The only thing that I don't like about it is the foreground. The
out-of-focus plants are incredibly distracting for me... and even besides
that, I think there's too much of that dead grass in the foreground.

I tried to crop the "rubbish" out of the photo (with my hand against the
screen) and just include the tops of the trees in the foreground; but then
the photo is unbalanced... so I'm not sure what the solution is. Perhaps
you can politely ask God to recreate the scene for you tomorrow, and
recompose. In any event, again its a nice capture. Thanks for sharing.
