I need a little feedback on this one. I'm not sure it's worth pursuing.

The lock on my mailbox broke and had to be replaced. It struck me as
something that could be used as an example of a broken pattern.

I've played with it a bit and looked at it until I'm cross-eyed. I
can't tell if it's straight and level or a tiny bit crooked. I'm also
not sure about the composition. The lock on box 7 is dead-center in
the frame, I don't think I like that. Maybe a rectangular crop
eliminating the top row of boxes might look better.

Is this worth the trouble to mess with or is it one of those "camera
club" photos that no-one but a photographer would look at?

 Thanks for any input, gs.

That's definitely worse IMO because the edge crosses the locks, might
work better if you widen the crop.

Overall, particularly with the shininess of lock 3, I find it difficult
to see what you're looking at even with the description, it's too subtle
for the effect I think you're trying to achieve.

Thanks for the comments. I'm gravitating toward the horizontal
version, but it's going to have to cook for a while before I print it.
I have a test print of the square version and I agree, the texture

Re: PESO - mailbox - interrupted pattern

2013-03-30 Thread John Sessoms

Without your description I wouldn't have known what you were trying to
show in the photo.

If the one box were completely missing its lock, that might make it more
compelling, in which case a wider shot showing more boxes would
establish the pattern a bit more forcefully.

Box locks are held in by just a nut or a clip. You could take it out
long enough to make your shot. But you might not want to do that.

Re: PESO - mailbox - interrupted pattern

2013-03-30 Thread Stan Halpin
I like the shot and actually prefer the second tighter crop. For one thing the
tighter closer view helps the viewer see more of the subtle texture on the
metal surfaces of doors and locks. But I think the second crop could be
improved if you moved the right edge one way or the other. I would have the
edge a) bisect the locks, b) hide the locks, or c) show the locks completely,
but with no space further to the right.
