I know, I own a JOBO hot shoe GPS unit. If shutter speeds are faster thank sync
speed, I just need to press a button to record the coordinates. Not a big deal.
The software will alsos designate your shots to the nearest actual recordings,
if not all your images (determined by the time of the shot) have a designated
GPS reading.
But I'd still buy a GPS unit that will write the GPS data directly into the
image file - Nikon style. Meaning no after shooting GPS work.

For these sorts of on-camera GPS units, can you the human get useful
data out of them real-time, or does it only talk to the camera? If I'm
out shooting, and I'm not at a race track (and sometimes if I am), I
generally have a hand held GPS unit with me to help my own navigation.
So I have the tracks. I don't mind letting a program spend a few
minutes branding GPS data from the tracks into the photos.

wouldn't it be enough to timesync and then match gps log time and exif
 time in post?

That's exactly what some of these devices do. They simply record where
you've been at some predetermined rate (likely every few seconds). Then back
at home, software supplied with the device matches the images' EXIF times
with your location log and updates the EXIF.

So you shouldn't even need to attach the device to the camera really, just
 carry it in your pocket.

In that case, it should be fairly straightforward to set up an Android (or
iPhone) to record gps data periodically, and go from there.  I tried to see
if such a program already existed, but most of what I got was about using the
 internal camera.

My Tracks

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.maps.mytracks

I've used this in exactly that way. To combine the tracklog with the
photos I used Jeffrey Fiedl's geoencoding plugin.
http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/gps

Seemed to work just fine.

Re: Pentax GPS accessory

2011-02-11 Thread eckinator
yep that is what I have my eTrex Legend for - it upsets me somewhat
though that the Oregon was announced just a few days after I bought
mine and that once again just recently when I had to buy a smartphone
the Garmin-Asus nüvifone A50 had just become unavailable from my
cellular provider. free Garmin nav with lifetime nümaps for a device
costing 35% less than the Defy would have been just too nice even with
a 320x480 display as opposed to the Defy's ruggedized 854x480.

then again I've thus far been too lazy to log with the eTrex and too
conservative about (and wary of) exposing my wherewhenabouts on the
iNet so I've yet to find use for it for myself - I practically never
have time to reshoot, I don't offer anything location based that will
earn me a single cent, and quite frankly these days I don't take many
pictures, my DAD (Duplo A Day) tilt/shift architecture project is
still on ground, my photography is overwhelmingly listless and
underwhelmingly uninspired.

but hey maybe taking a bookworthy pic for the annual could be a source
of appetite

I'll try my bloody hardest. Duplo, anyone?

It's got to have some sort of output from the camera to tell it when a
photo is taken so it knows when to log the coordinates. I'm curious how
it gets that information since the hot-shoe it appears to mount on
doesn't trigger all the time.

maybe it listens for the shutter? =)
wouldn't it be enough to timesync and then match gps log time and exif

maybe it is just a data logger and only attaches to the hotshoe
physically - there are others like it so it could just be redabged OEM
who knows; I'll just wait and see =)

 2011/2/10, John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com:
Pentax doesn't trigger the hot-shoe at shutter speeds above sync. How
does this thing work if it's mounted there?

It's got to have some sort of output from the camera to tell it when a
photo is taken so it knows when to log the coordinates. I'm curious how
it gets that information since the hot-shoe it appears to mount on
 doesn't trigger all the time.

That's exactly what some of these devices do. They simply record where
you've been at some predetermined rate (likely every few seconds). Then
back at home, software supplied with the device matches the images' EXIF
times with your location log and updates the EXIF.

So you shouldn't even need to attach the device to the camera really,
just carry it in your pocket.

you'd need to synchronise clocks from time to time.

Re: Pentax GPS accessory

This seems like it would be a good application for blue tooth
technology. That is, if only Pentax cameras were built with blue tooth
capability. You would then only have to have the GPS unit near the
camera, not connected to it.

In that case, it should be fairly straightforward to set up an Android (or
iPhone) to record gps data periodically, and go from there. I tried to see if
such a program already existed, but most of what I got was about using the
internal camera.

In a similar vein, I believe that the pc jack is not limited by shutter speed,
as I've had several shots that didn't sync because the shutter speed was too
high. In theory, one could buy a $10 bluetooth headset, wire the button to a
pc sync cable so that every time you took a photo, the headset would send a
ping to the android, then simply write an ISR that used that signal to look up
gps location rather than dialing the phone.

Using, of course, beer and pizza definitions of simple and
straightforward.

Bad idea IMO, siply because that would eat battery power like crazy,
on both the logger and the camera.
