Re: Well this is interesting...

2011-04-16 Thread Joseph McAllister
I had no money withheld from my two pensions and Social Security. For 2009 I
sent them $42. A few days later I received a IRS check for $42… No explanation
accompanied it.

This year, I owed them $3.00. I also checked the box stating I never received
my $250 "enablement" from the Pres. Less than a week later, $247 appeared in my
checking account. I was pleased.

I've noticed for the last five years or so the new computers the IRS must have
gotten have immensely speeded up the process of paying taxes.

I'm happy for you Mark. Anything of mine you may want to trade dollars for?
Just ask!

Noticed that my income tax refund had appeared on my bank statement
today. And it was several hundred dollars *more* than I'd asked for.
Seems I made a mistake in the government's favor and they caught it
and corrected it. I suspect some enablement may result...

Since I will be having to *PAY* a LOT this year, I will be consigning my
returns to the USPS in time for them to be postmarked prior to the
midnight, Monday, April 18th deadline.

2011-04-16 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I've done the same for many years, but I closed two businesses last
year and the complexity of the filing instructions got to me. Making a
mistake would cost me a lot more than having a preparer do the job,
and/or support me if I needed help during editing and with resultant
penalties.

I don't enjoying paying the bill for a preparer, but there are times
when it is the right thing to do.

Re: Well this is interesting...

2011-04-16 Thread John Francis

My wife the accountant decided that this year it was worth paying
a professional Tax preparer, rather than using TurboTax again;
this year filing was a whole lot more complicated than last year.
I don't argue with her when it comes to decisions like that.

I'm pretty sure the fees we were charged were somewhat less than
the savings from a couple of allowances we weren't claiming before.
The fees were certainly less than 10x the tax bill we ended up with;
we try not to make loans to the government, so we generally have to
send off a four-figure sum with the return (we aim for as large an
amount due as possible without the risk of incurring penalties).
Rather than let the government take it off our payroll checks,
my wife will stick the funds in a short-term investment account.

I was using that as a generic term. In fact she can play games
moving virtual cash between different investment accounts, so
the end result is a higher balance in our longer-term, higher-
interest accounts. Like I said - she's the professional here.

In any case, just about any strategy beats letting the feds
have the use of the money for any longer that necessary.

John,
0.25% on $100,000 is $250 for a full year. A partial year is less.
I stopped worrying about squeezing the last $1,000 out of the checking account
so I could earn more interest in the longer term accounts. Just not worth it.

The way I see the division of labor is that John lets his wife handle all of
the financial details, this frees him up to make the important decisions, such
as which lenses to buy.

And bodies ... Mind you, it does mean she decides *when* to buy them.

While we probably don't squeeze the last dollar out of the system, it
certainly isn't difficult to get a whole lot more than 0.25% more than
what you would get from lending the money to the government. And while
that only means an average of $5 per $1000 for each percentage point,
it can still add up to a measurable sum. Not enough for a K-5, but for
the amount of time she actually spends doing it it's a decent return.

It's a good strategy. Like her, I send the government only enough to avoid
penalties. Heck, from just December 31 to March 31 of this year, 100,000
invested in easily liquidated mutual funds earns close to $5000.

Yes, but it's not all that hard to predict when they'll go up. And balance can
be achieved. There are money market funds and bond funds in addition to stock
funds. CDs are paying less than 1% interest. Not much better than under the
pillow.
