I've tried zooms, including some good ones. The convenience is nice, but
 they have never satisfied me.
Perhaps I just need to get a really good one.

Have not. Would love to.
But I've also seen the price tags.
Although I could sell the 28/35/50 and come close to a break-even on the

Don't worry about autofocus in a 35mm lens, they're wide enough that
at a reasonable aperture you hardly have to focus anyway (well, I

The M 35 f2.8 is renowned for having sluggish aperature

Kostas and Frank - you're both wrong. I have K 24/2.8.
What I found out about my very M 35/2.8 is two things:
1. At f/2.8 and f/4 it gives very pleasing results
2. At f/5.6 and on the look of the picture is anything but pleasing. I
cannot really explain what displeases me, but it would seem as if the
result is over-sharpened - if it makes any sense to you.
I've shot 2 films exclusively with that lens on my trip to Norway and
I will have to review these scans very carefully.
Also my ME Super keeps giving me warnings. On one of these two films
two frames just overlapped - no inter-frame distance whatsoever. I am
starting to think that I have to get rid of it :(... And then I will
have to think of AF optics in favor of my older glass...
Frankly :), I am not sure where do I go these days, so for now I am

Camera Club swap meets in big cities are a great place to buy stuff too (or at
least used to be before eby). Probably my best deal ever was at one of those.
There was a guy selling a Mamiya SB-67 outfit. He had a Polaroid back for it. I
asked what he wanted. He said $50. So I bought it. The back that also fit my
Mamiya Universal Press was going for about $250 used back then, and my friendly
local dealer gave me $60 for the P adapter that I did not need on the
Universal. So total cost $-10.

On the other hand, I recall from a couple years back that someone on the list (I

Luck like that I never had.

Congratulations, Sid. Welcome to the Electro Spotmatic club.

Well, the camera arrived and as soon as I put the battery in, that
meter leaped up and performed like a circus animal.

But, Sid, how well are circus animals at metering ??? ;-)

Now, the curious accessory: the Asahi pentax everready case: also
in mint condition, but brown. I've always seen black ones. Anyone
else seen one in brown leather?

I believe that's the standard Electro Spotmatic case. I have seen
two of 'em, both with Electro Spotmatics. See
http://www.cetussoft.com/pentax/electrosp2.jpg

The case also has an extra deep cut-out to the side of the lens to
allow for the protruding battery chamber. (A regular Spotmatic case
doesn't have that.)

Sid,

It's the same here. I got an Electro Spotmatic (not an ES) and it came with
a BROWN leather case. I couldn't resist buying it as I'd never seen one
before. Since then, I've seen yours and another on ebay.

I've been shooting with another ES and enjoying it. Finding a set of lenses
adds to the challenge, but the SMC Takumars deliver good results and feel
special in the hand. I think the experience is a bit more tactile than the
rest of my Pentax gear.

 Hi Gang,
on my way to acquiring every single model ever made by Asahi Co., I recently
took a chance on an early ES, the one that spells out electro spotmatic.
The seller advertised it as non-working, but in mint condition. I paid less
than $120 US, simply for the cosmetic condtion, with ideas ruminating in my
head about transferring the top plate and bottom plate to a working model.

Well, the camera arrived and as soon as I put the battery in, that meter
leaped up and performed like a circus animal. Seems quite accurate compared
to my other ES, to. So: mint condition, working, rather uncommon beast; a
fine addition to the Barras pentax family.

Now, the curious accessory: the Asahi pentax everready case: also in mint
condition, but brown. I've always seen black ones. Anyone else seen one in
 brown leather?

 Sid

hmmm. Isn't 90mm more of a normal lens on a 6x7? It is about equivalent to a 45mm in
the 35mm world, innit?

The 6x7 comes with a 105/f2.4 as standard and that seems to be about a
50mm equiv. It's also just about the fastest MF lens available.

Not a steal, they know what gear is worth :) If it's still there tomorrow I'll ask
them what its worth without the lens. I know its a little pointless having a body
with no lenses but at least it'll give me an incentive to sell the RB67 kit.

Incentive to sell a RB67? Try It's feeping heavy!

The 90mm has a slightly closer minimum focus distance, from what I
recall when I was deciding which to buy with my 67. Our Pentax rep (and
a couple of other people) told me that the 90mm was sharper than the
105mm at the f22-32 end of the scale, while the 105mm was sharper from
f2.4 to 4. Since I shoot a lot of low light stuff, that made the
decision easy for me, and with the money I saved I bought the helicoid
extension tube (which totally rocks).

The 105mm is absolutely outstanding.

 Yes. It's a focal length I'm really fond of (my RB67 came with a 90mm f/3.8).
I assumed the Pentax to be an outdoors portrait lens because they put a leaf
shutter into it, perfect for fill-flash. Probably not well suited to head-and-
 shoulders shots though.

Hi Dave,

The shutter can be cocked by opening the back, turning the frame
counter over the 0 (there is a dial for this on the advance
lever) and then, keeping the counter in position, closing the
back. This allows the shutter to work without film. You can
lock the mirror up only when the shutter is cocked, of course.
Forgetting the mirror up can drain the battery, though.
There is another way to do that, but a special key is needed.

One thing I found strange: the newer body had a 90mm f/2.8 leaf shutter lens
on it. Seems strange to put only 5 aperture blades into what's essentially an
 outdoor portrait lens.

- snip -

How much do they want for the lens only? and is it in
decent condition? I just picked up a 67II (brand new) and am
looking at both the 165/F4-LS and the older 90mm F2.8 LS.

BTW, for the list members who may have experience with
the 90mm F2.8 LS, is it generally considered a decent
lens? and what would the rough asking price for it be?

Cheers,
Brian
