Well, the PUG meister does.

I have been using this a lot for sharing via web sites and have paid for
version 12, but don't want to pay for the latest version.
There are so many other options now such as Wordpress galleries or
sharing of maps on cloud drives.

Why RAW files should fit in a slide show is not clear to me.

One of the more interesting recent galleries

Most went for a literal interpretation (Ken didn't even need to leave
his living room to do so!) but there were several that interpreted the
theme differently.

Dan and Malcolm used 'a fork in the road of life' in their submissions
while Phillip found a nautical interpretation and Paul went down the
architectural route. Then there's Igor's 'Choosing Slowly', which
certainly expands the boundaries of the theme.

Overall, my favourite is Henk's 'Traveller' narrowly ahead of Ken's
'Pitchin Michigan'.

The team from IBM who were developing the PC was interested in acquiring
CP/M for the operating system. Legend has it that Gary Kildall refused
to meet with them because he wanted to go flying instead.

According to the people I worked with at IBM, they went to visit Digital

standard, draconian non-disclosure agreement down on the desk & scared
the sh** out of Mrs. Kildall, who told them she couldn't sign it without
talking to her husband Gary - who wasn't there; he'd taken the day off to
be with their daughter.

She asked them to come back the next day, but their itinerary had them
at Microsoft the next day to acquire a license for Microsoft's BASIC

Somewhere in the conversation around licensing Microsoft's BASIC for the
new PC, Gates "just happened to mention" that he had a disk operating

day (instead of returning to Digital Research to meet with Kildall).

I don't know if Gates had already acquired QDOS from Seattle Computer

needed an OS before he purchased QDOS from SCP.

Steve was immediately bowled over by what he saw and asked Adele

Re: Fast Normal Zoom. (for APS-C)

The Tamron SP AF 17-50/2.8 XR is my favorite standard zoom. Cheap and
reliable. I have my second one after a fall with my bike.

So I've been getting along using a combination of a Manual focus
Varafocal, (Vivitar 35-85mm f2.8), and a FA 20-35mm which satisfies
most of my needs, but they can be damnably inconvenient, the varafocal
makes me think that sometimes I need extra fingers and more inertial
processing for my brain to keep track of stop down metering,
re-framing and refocusing, which leads to a lot more missed shots than
I'm happy with. Swapping to the 20-35 and back, is sometimes
necessary at very inconvenient times which also leads to missed shots.

It doesn't look like a Full Frame camera is in my budget for quite
some time, and let's face it, I've come to terms with APS-C. The
K-5II is more than sufficient for most of what I do, in fact is better
than most needs. A more identical backup body is what I'm more likely
to get than an actual full frame camera, maybe a K-7 another
K-5[II(s)], or K3 thought the latter would have some of the same
problems as using the K20D as backup, though the K5II hasn't failed me
yet.

So I'm looking at APS-C lenses.

I've kind of narrowed it down to five lenses, at this point, based on
reviews.

Pentax FA* 16-55 f2.8 available new.

Sigma 17-50 f2.8, comes in couple versions, latest version still
available new.

Tamron 17-50 f2.8 also comes in a couple of versions latest version
still available new.

Pentax FA 17-70, seems to be discontinued, but still available new.

Sigma 17-70, three versions, latest one still available new.

All of them have pluses and minuses, the Pentax FA* is the most
expensive, the first version of the Tamron is least expensive, of
course it's only really available used. I like the idea of the 17-70
as it would cut down on the necessity of changing lenses when things
are moving fast.

I know there are people on the list who've used later Sigma 17-70, and
the two Pentax lenses, but what about the Sigma 17-50 and Tamron 17-50
has anybody got any experience with them? Optically good? Mechanically
crap? Vice Versa?

It comes down to the fact that I don't trust most reviewers. I'll pick
up something that's gotten bad reviews play with it a while and think,
this isn't nearly as bad as I expected, hell this even seems to be
pretty good, and things that have gotten good reviews and think, what
the f*#k was that guy talking about this is pretty horrible. You guys
have real world experience, what is it.

I've considered all the suggestions and, if they don't appear here,

Lighting was with led spots, with a lot of blue in the back.

If anyone has hints for how to increase the autofocus hit rate when

performs with some old film era lenses - the FA 50 f1.7, F28 f2.8, A*
200 macro, Sigma EX 70-200 f2.8 (1st generation) and FA 20-30 f4 zoom

not have the mounting issue that the current version has (I found one
comment on Pentax Forums that said it did not, but you never know).
I'm not all that optimistic about the FA 20-35 but we'll see.

I've been doing some more stacked macros in the past couple weeks and
the tought that I could be doing these with a much more capable camera

Re: Pentax K-P

2017-02-25 Thread Henk Terhell
Malcolm, interesting information. Looks like a great small model as the
MX in the old days.

I wonder how the high ISO compare with that of the K-1.

Henk

Op 2017-02-25 om 11:33 schreef Malcolm Smith:

It arrived as one of the last courier deliveries of the day, and as it has a
different battery and charger (not great but part of the 'make it smaller'
drive), I was forced to charge that, and it was dark by the time it was
fully charged.

It comes with the small grip attached - one Allen key bolt with Allen key
provided - and I'm not sure who will use the small, as my wife with small
hands found that grip too small. The camera is indeed smaller, but it is
well laid out control wise. With a small lens, a 40mm pancake maybe, it
would pass for a point and shoot from a small distance, and I think that
might work well for street photography, and the tilt screen is useful.

The different grips are a good idea, although as I have big hands the large
will be the only suitable grip for me. I wouldn't want the camera any
smaller.

However, this was all about the high ISO abilities to me. I attach two
photos, one of the box, and one I took indoors. So far, I've only taken 5
pictures with it, and so I have much to get used to with it. One of the
pictures I took outside at 204,500 ISO just to see in the dark to see if it
could get a moving car, and whilst the image looked like a surveillance
photo as it was so grainy, I was astonished to see the registration
number/license plate readable. The K3 wouldn't work on this at all - I
tried.

Again with the picture of my cat, I tried to make it as hard as possible for
the camera, with really low light, so I had trouble seeing her, a smallish
aperture, quick shutter speed and then processed and cropped the image in
Lightroom, to further stress the image. Obviously that's not a picture
you're going to use day to day, but for a hand held shot (where the K 3
wanted several seconds exposure), this opens up a new world for me. I'm
happy. I'll certainly be able to use a much higher ISO than I currently do
and be useable.

I think they've made a camera that suits me, but time will tell if it suits
anyone else. If it was a choice between a K3 (K3 II) or a K-P, it would be
an easy choice for the former. I'm therefore not sure if I was buying a
Pentax DSLR for the first time I'd even look at the K-P.

Re: The Camera Store reviews the K-P

2017-03-11 Thread Henk Terhell
I like the design of the KP. The small form factor, and the higher ISO
made me almost decide to pre-order the KP to upgrade from my K-5.

For use in the theatre, low light performance is important to me.
But the price gap of the KP with K-1 is not that great, so I bought the
K-1 instead.
But now I need something lightweight for longer walks. The K-5 with a
prime lens will do for now.

You can't have one camera for all purposes.

For yourself private and public photos all end up in your photostream.
The public will of course only see public photos of your photosteam.
What I do is always upload as private and change those which may be
visual to the public after the upload.

Albums will follow exactly the setting of photos as private or public.
You can arrange (organize) the order in an album the way you want, but
you have to remember to do this again after new photos are placed in an
album.

Flickr's help pages are kind of opaque & I haven't figured it out yet.
The problem with the photostream is it has only ONE way to sort
photos, in the date/time order you upload them.

I think the albums allow you to order the photos any way you want to.

Not to my knowledge.
A private photo is private in both photostream and albums.
A public photo is public in both photostream and albums.
An album is just a set or group of photos. Photos can be placed in

2018-04-09 Thread Henk Terhell

Gonz, I entirely agree with you.
Ever since I owned the K-1 I am looking for a wide angle lens for
landscape work, preferably as a prime.
Something in the range of 20 or 24 mm. But there is nothing in the line
of Pentax except the FA 15-30/2.8 which is about the price of the K-1
itself.
I'm glad to still own an old Sigma 24/2.8 macro which is doing fairly
well except for flare.
A few months ago I bought a very cheap old Cosina MC 19-35 /3.5-4.6 to
get a bit wider.
I know there are some TP manual wide angle lenses being offered
(Samyang, Venus, Irix) but going back to all manual is not the way I want.
Further I wonder who will be interested in another 50 mm lens except a
few 50 collectors.
There are still plenty of 50/2.8 macro and FA 50/F1.4 around to do the
job, and I doubt whether the new 50 will beat my Pentax F 50/2.8 macro
on sharpness.

Henk

Op 2018-04-09 om 00:54 schreef Gonz:

I don't expect Pentax to be releasing mirrorless cameras rivaling
Sony's or anyones for that matter. Or I don't expect them to produce a

particular niche, which I would say is aspiring amateur photographers
that like small form-factor cameras with lenses that are not
necessarily the sharpest, but take a more balanced approach to the
overall look of the images, seems to be more and more encroached by
the likes of Sony, Fuji, etc. In addition, things that are nice to
have, like a nice flash, teleconverters, etc. are pretty much
non-existent or exist only in old versions that you have to turn to
ebay to acquire. Finally, the dearth of new lens offerings from
Pentax, esp nice primes suitable for full frame digital with modern
autofocus, basically have stopped coming with the exception of the 50
later this year. Where are the nice full frame birding lenses? Or a
prime wide angle? The real sign however is the lack of support from
third parties. Everytime a nice lens comes out from Sigma, or some of
the newer players such as Laoa, the Pentax version is not there.
Given the lack of new primes coming from Pentax, I would love it if
Sigma art series lenses were available for the K-1, but alas, few are.
I thought for sure the enthusiastic response from the photog community
to the K-1 would have resulted in more investment from Ricoh to keep
the momentum going, but it appears that they have pulled back instead.

One can justify the new 50mm on the basis it's the standard lens for
the format, which makes it a logical starting point.

The other option is to throw darts at a board blindfolded and decide
by luck what order to release lenses in.

You want a wide angle, so they release a 24mm first, except you really
want a 20mm, so you aren't happy, and the people who want something
longer aren't happy either.
They release an 85mm first, and all the people who want something
shorter aren't happy.

And let's not forget those photographers who want a 105mm or 135mm.
Gotta keep them happy, and on and on.

It doesn't matter what they release first, they are going to tick of
some people who take it as a personal insult that their pet focal
length wasn't the one drawn out of the hat.

There are some focal lengths that are no brainer must haves in a lens
system. Ricoh's failing was not releasing half a dozen primes
concurrent with the K1. Instead they gamely attempted to be all things
to all people by releasing 3 bloated zooms covering a very wide range,
and in the process satisfied almost no one.

As an aside, your 50/2.8 may well be a very good lens, but I bet the
new 50 will be better at f/1.4 than your 50/2.8

bill

You may be right as to pentax decisions, but for ff there is now by
pentax a 50, a 77, and a 100 (macro) but nothing at all in the wide
angle prime range below 35.

By the way, I use my 50/2.8 macro a lot but can't recall I used it wide
open. I now use my 50/1.4 only rarely in a theater.

Re: thoughts on the K-1 vs K-3

2018-04-14 Thread Henk Terhell
For me there is also always the dilemma going for a walk: do I take the
K-1 or the K-5. Weight/size versus quality.
The K-5 with the DA 21/3.2 limited is so conveniently small and fits
well under a coat in cold weather, though I see people thinking  I am
growing a belly.
Once I decide to take the K-1 the question comes up whether the ND grad
filter should go along, but that implies also the tripod, so I'll take a
backpack with more lenses...

Never do I put APS lenses on the K-1 following Northrup's advice on YT
as there is no gain in pixels.
With both cameras I am frequently struggling on focusing so that is not
an issue for me.

Op 2018-04-14 om 10:09 schreef Larry Colen:
I've noticed that lately that when I'm grabbing a camera to have with
me when I go out, I've been a lot less picky about whether I grab my
K-1 or K-3.  Ignoring price, if you happen to have both lying around,
there are a lot of ways in which the K-1 is a better camera than the
K-3, and a few that the K-3 is better than the K-1. If size, weight
and fps don't tremendously matter, then the K-1 is a pretty damn nice
APS camera in crop mode. It doesn't have the resolution in APS of the
K-3, nor the frame rate, but the focus is better, and its focus points
cover much more of the APS frame.

In challenging light, or challenging focus conditions, the K-1 does
better, not hugely but noticeably so, than the K-3. However, in decent
light and for that matter even some pretty lousy light, walking around
taking pictures, I can think of very few cases (if any) where I'd look
at the final image and be able to tell whether I shot it with the K-3
and 16-50 or the K-1 and the 28-75.

To be sure, there are lots of times that to get a particular shot, I
really need the larger sensor in the K-1, those are usually night time
wide angle shots.  Also, when I'm photographing musicians and don't
want to get great shots of microphones with blurry musicians in the
background, the K-1 far outshines the K-3. But I've recently been
surprised to realize how often, for basic shooting, it really doesn't
matter to me which camera I grab.

I will note that I haven't gotten to the point of grabbing the K-1 and
APS only lenses like the 18-250.

The choice of private/friends/family/public works fine. Also there are

I also maintain on Flickr a community (public) image bank as the
arrangement of albums or sets and frequently extensive descriptions of
the images are so much more conveniently done than on a hosted website.

I've no experience at all how current smugmug handles all this.

Ann, that's an impressive gallery! Glad you shared it.
It will take more time to look at all of the pics, but that squirrel
looking at the hawk is extremely fascinating.

You will have plenty to choose from for the May pug!
The smugmug layout is pretty good and I like the black background more
than the white one on Flickr.
I only seem to miss interactions/reactions/favorites or whatever, only
individual comments, so it looks Flickr is more of a social media.

But there is not much to worry about the take over -  I'll see what happens.

Re: DFA 28-105 - first impressions

2018-05-02 Thread Henk Terhell
Never been disappointed by this lens for reporting type of work. Always
pretty sharp.

I've never paid much attention to the light fall off.
Wider and longer is of course often desired, but if you want to limit
yourself to one lens on the K-1, this for me is the one.

Have a good hike with it.

I received my new DFA 28-105 today, getting my first weather-sealed
full-frame lens in preparation for my upcoming adventure in Yorkshire,
Durham and Northumberland. I haven't given it a proper tryout yet -
just a few quick test shots to insure it doesn't suffer from any major
alignment/decentering issues. But I have to say the build quality
seems impressive for such a budget (by FF standards) lens. Focusing is
fast and virtually silent. And though I'd certainly like a faster lens
(f/5.6 at 105mm is a tad disappointing) the benefit in terms of size
is remarkable. It's surprisingly compact.

I hope to get in a few test photos tomorrow (not that the semester is
over).

Just an FYI:

I was still considering upgrading my K1 to the 'II' level, for better high-ISO
performance
better AF-tracking and the 'handheld' pixel-shift.

I don't like the hassle/risk of sending it in (to Germany, from the
Netherlands) though.

Now, reading the review, it seems that the 'better' high ISO is achieved mainly
by adding noise reduction in the new accelarator chip, at the expense of detail.
(quite visible in small printed text for example).

So I will probably skip the update and save 500 Euros as well :)

I will wait for the next model, with newer sensor technology, and just enjoy
the K1 until then!

In Elements I use transform -> skew (I think that how it is called in
the English version) and lift up the right corner a bit. In Elements
there is also perspective and distort but I don't think these work here.
There is however a problem in using Elements (at least in my version 9)
as external editor for LR RAW files in that you get a warning that 16
bit color depth will be reduced so you loose some quality.

I can't find the origin of the name ox-tongue for this tribe of plants.
Perhaps it has to do with the red dye the Greeks extracted from it.

I don't own the KP, but it would be my choice on APS-C considering it is

Of course you can wait till a new flagship but it definitely will take

As you say, a tilting screen is so useful in many situations, and
therefore many times a reason for me not to take my K5 along.

What I don't like on the KP is the small new battery size and the missing

Probably they release a new flagship APS model the moment I buy a KP.

Any other reasons I should or shouldn't get the KP?

Re: Usable ISO with K-3

2018-07-22 Thread Henk Terhell

I've grown up with 18 DIN, therefore my selections are very conservative:
Outdoor mostly ISO 100 with tripod for best dynamic range.
W/o tripod (moving subjects) and macro up to ISO 400.
In the theater flash at ISO 400 or w/o flash up to ISO 6400 with K-1 and
ISO 1600 with K5. Not higher - some movement may be more expressive.

Always -1 (or more) underexposure to avoid highlights.

Surprise, surprise but I got very usable captures up to 25600, but not
so much @ 51200 - which produced a noticeable color shift.

A subjective evaluation that will give me a little more leeway in the
field.

Re: Metz mecablitz 44 AF-2 Digital Flash for Pentax Cameras - any comments?

2018-07-29 Thread Henk Terhell
Mine is the Metz 48 AF-1 digital which has worked fine for a long time
starting with the * istD.
On the K1 it showed incorrect exposure with full blast, until I
discovered there was an firmware update.
Now it's correctly measuring in P-TTL. But I'm using more and more
natural light and brighten shadows in Lightroom.

Henk

Op 2018-07-29 om 20:17 schreef Jos de Fotograaf:
I agree with the remarks of Mark: robustness of Metz flashes is less
than their products 30-40 years ago (the hammer type that could be
used as a hammer!)
But, lets be fair, presents types are relatively cheaper and have more
options.
I had a AF-1 and a AF-2 both failed after a few years due to jammed
zoom mechanisme.

I opened one and was shocked by the fragile construction.

Then I decided that I have little advantage from P-TTL and go on with
some old flashes: automatic with their own sensor, no automatic
zooming, robust and reliable.

The good: Lots of options and features. The user interface is a
little fiddly but once you get used to its not a problem. It needed a
firmware update to work with the K1 but has a usb port and can be
easily updated. With the update it works fine on the K1.

The not good: The LCD panel stopped illuminating a few months after I
bought the first flash. I assumed it was just switched off (the menus
still appeared on the panel but without back lighting). Metz said it
was defective and offered to repair it under warranty. After several
weeks of waiting for parts they ultimately replaced the flash with a
new one. The new unit developed the same failure within a few months,
and by then the warranty had expired. I can still use the unit I
have, but can't read the menus in the dark.

Given that I had two flashes fail in the same manner I'm skeptical of
Metz's quality. But the flash is feature rich, well designed and
affordably priced.

from my previous experience with Pentax flashes (280t and 330ftz)
they tend to eat batteries faster than ideal, but had endured a lot

flash photos are not so frequent, for me, to the point a Vivitar
