Hello:
I recently acquired an Agfa Ventura 69 (6x9 format). No light leaks, at least
with 125 speed film and a flashlight inside it.Lens/shutter have been CLA'ed.

Murray, I like to use the shutters from these old folders, especially if they
have a B(ulb) or T(ime) setting. It's much easier to just remove the lenses &
replace them with a piece of brass shim with a pinhole drilled into it. I can
send you pics of a couple I've converted, if you'd like. The upside is you can
always put the lenses back in & give the camera to someone who wants a
medium-format with a traditional lens.

RE: [pinhole-discussion] polaroid pinhole kit

2003-05-07 Thread John Moore
Matti,

Take a look at a page I just put up to show a tripod mount I made:
http://www.speakeasy.org/~jlmoore/pinshot.htm
This also shows an Agfa Shur Shot that I convert to "The Johnderosa PinShot",
but I haven't put up all the info.

As for the bluish cast- I usually use a light yellow filter behind the pinhole.
You can go lo-tech & just use a piece of yellow cellophane, the kind usually
used to package easter baskets, or you can get the actual filter material. I've
used old Kodak Series V or VI glass filters, only because I bought a box of
these at a garage sale!

By the way- I've also been converting Polaroid pack cameras to pinhole for
about half the price. Of course, I don't include brand-new 669 film- I only
have some slightly-out-of-date 679 (color) or 667 (b&w 3000!). But, the cameras
work a heck of a lot better than the Polaroid kit & they're more solid. Some
even have tripod adapters built in! Let me know if you're interested- I'll send
you some more info.

hi all,

today I received my Polaroid pinhole kit and sort of managed to put it
together. The tripod mount sucks, first of all in the package was so little bit
of sponge tape that it never held the camera, I bought some more, but still the
tripod mount is unusable. Here's so windy that the camera moves so much, that
the pictures I finally got, are all too bad. I'd like to know how others have
got the tripod mount rigid?

Then after getting the film loaded correctly, the photos are very
bluish. They look otherwise ok (exposure) but colors are badly off.
Polaroid says long exposures may cause this, but mine were about 5 secs all
and development 1 minute.

All information urgently needed.

As for Guillermo's suggestion of the Bender darkslide- that would be very easy

Hi, and a happy holiday to all. I was wondering, since I am pretty much a
newbie at pinholing, and I am enjoying each moment so far, has anyone had
experience with the panopin camera? I am thinking about getting one though I
am still designing one of my own (the fun part for myself), I just do not
have an idea on how to get the film advance mechanism to work. Also just how
do paper negatives compare to film negatives? If the paper negatives are
just as good then I can forego the film advance mechanism.
Currently I am using a 4x5 camera I made up and using Polaroid 55 type
film. I am hoping to scan in the negatives and then use my computer to keep
an album of my work. I do not have a darkroom available. Any feedback would
be most welcome. Enjoy. Oh and in keeping with the Easter holiday I was
wondering, has anyone thought about blowing out eggs and then coating the
inside with light sensitive emulsion exposing the eggs and then developing
and carefully cutting the eggs open? I see it in my head but its just one of
those random thoughts I get every now and again. CJ

A slingshot may also work. I know once upon a time in my misspent youth I owned
a wrist-rocket slingshot. I know I was able to put 1/4 "; 1/2" and 1" steel
shot through multiple layers of cardboard and the hole were fairly clear. Using
a bb from about 1' -2' might be the perfect combo of power to punch through
cardboard creating a nice vignette from the thickness of the material. I would
use some 16x20 paper to overcome the size of the holes.

Another option might be to use a nail gun

Re: [pinhole-discussion] Willarney's BB Idea

2003-03-14 Thread John Moore
Okay, I've gone & made the camera. I took a 16x11x11 cardboard box (from one of
the WAY too many online auction purchases) & cut one end off & mounted a piece
of aluminum foil on the end. I then taped the hell out of it
(photoblack+carton+duct) and put it all back together for a firing test. I
don't know if the hole that the BB makes is neat enough for a clean pinhole
image- I'll have to test that later.

That's the good news... now the bad news: 1st, I cut myself with the carton
knife I was using (thankfully only once- but it was through the first layer of
skin) then, I used the BB gun that has the CO2 cartridge (WAY TOO MUCH POWER)
and the BB went through the foil, through the back of the box, bounced off of
the workbench and through my glasses & I SHOT MY EYE OUT!

So- I'll have to request the addresses of each of the original posters of this
thread, as my attorney will be contacting each of you tomorrow morning. Since I
live in California, I plan on bringing a lawsuit against each of you for not
warning me of the dangers of BB Pinholing. I'm looking for the deepest pockets
here, so you might as well make it easy on yourselves & fess up to your annual
incomes. I'm sure Marcy's collection of toy cameras has to be worth serious
bucks at this point- so I'm expecting a HUGE settlement!

If I can get some assistance with another test in the morning- I'm hoping I can
talk one of my neighbors into performing the firing sequence (while I'm busy in
the darkroom). If this works, I'll post some results here:
http://www.speakeasy.net/~jlmoore/bbpinhole.htm

If none of my neighbors are willing/gullible, then maybe I can talk my attorney
into performing this test.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] Limited Edition Pinhole Polaroid Camera

2002-11-12 Thread John Moore
I laughed when I saw the auction the first time- it is
amazing what people will pay for some things on eBay.
If you look around, though, you can find some neat
items that make great pinhole cameras. I've picked up
a couple of the Tektronix C-5C Oscilloscope cameras &
am in the process of converting them to pinhole.

They have a few great features that work well for
pinhole: the shutter is electronic with timed speeds
from .1 to 5 seconds, as well as an open shutter
feature for longer exposures; they use the 3-1/4 x
4-1/4 pack film, so you can use the 665PN to get a
negative; they're very light; the lenses are easily
removed with just a couple of screws; and they usually
can be found for under $15!

Since there isn't an adjustable aperature you need to
put the pinhole behind the shutter. The distance from
the pinhole to the film is 90mm, so I'm using a .4mm
pinhole. According to Larry Fratkin's calculator this
results in a f-stop of 225 with 172mm of coverage.

I've rigged an old Kodak Series V filter holder for
the front, so that I can add some warmth when using
color film. Also helps with contrast on B&W.

The only downsides to the C-5C are the lack of tripod
adapter, which I'm going to add, and the faceplate is
open- so I'm going to manufacture a plate. If the
camera comes complete with the cone that is normally
attached to the front of the oscilloscope, then you
can use that plastic to make a faceplate.

I'll take some pics & post them to my site:

Tim,

Here is a link to a page I put together:
http://www.speakeasy.org/~jlmoore/speedioscope.htm
I used a Graflex "Speed-i-o-Scope" shutter & added a
pinhole to it... The Speed-i-o-scope is basically a
re-badged Ilex Universal #3, which are easy to clean
up & seem to be plentiful on eBay. I've also used the
Wollensak "Alphax" shutter, but they tend to be a bit
more costly at times.

You can also use most of the shutters off of the older
folding cameras, like the Kodak 3A, as long as it has
a T(ime) or B(ulb) setting. I like to use the type
that accepts a shutter release, rather than just the
release arm. Some of the older pnuematic shutters,
like the Unicum, also work well- but they are also
trickier to repair if they're in bad shape. I've had
no compunction about taking apart some of the old
folders, especially when the bellows are shot & the
lenses look like a moss field.

Try a quart- or gallon-size ziplock baggie, preferably
the heavy-duty freezer bags. Add some wet paper

[pinhole-discussion] Kodak Fine Grain Positive Film

2002-09-09 Thread John Moore
Hello all, I have a box of 8x10 Kodak Fine Grain
Positive Film (7302) that I'd like to try out... I'm
not necessarily looking for a positive image, although
that might work for a lighted frame I have.

My quesions:
1) Has anyone used this film for pinhole negatives?
2) What exposure index worked best?
3) If developed for a negative- what developer/ratio &
developing time?
4) If developed for a positive- what developer/ratio &
developing time?

Thanks, in advance,
John Moore

[pinhole-discussion] Checking pinhole sizes (again?)

2002-08-09 Thread John Moore
I hesitate to reopen an old discussion, but I'll do it
anyway. I've found an inexpensive source for a pocket
comparator & reticle inserts to check the sizes of
pinholes:
http://www.surplusshed.com/pages/Magnifiers.html.

The pocket comparator (Item No.: L1873D) is $28.50 &
the reticle insert (Item No.: M1599D) is $12. $50.50
seems like a good deal for an item that can be used
for more than just checking pinhole sizes... of
course, I can't seem to think of anything else to use
it for- but, no matter.

No relationship to Surplus Shed, just thought I'd pass
on the info. This is one of my favorite browsing
sites- lots of cool stuff that I haven't the faintest
idea what they're for, but I know I NEED something
they have.

[pinhole-discussion] Excellent shutters for Pinholes!

2002-07-20 Thread John Moore
I thought I'd pass this on: I've built a pinhole
shutter around the Graflex "Speed-I-O-Scope" shutter.
I know that a lot of pinholes are just affixed to a
box & then covered with black tape, which is removed
for the exposure. I wanted to cheat a bit and use my
4x5 & not have to resort to the tape shutter, so I
modified the Speed-I-O-Scope to work. Here is a page
with my modifications:
http://www.speakeasy.org/~jlmoore/speedioscope.htm.

I mention this because I just noticed a couple of
these shutters available on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1368084495
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1368083720

The Speed-I-O-Scope is just an Ilex Universal #3
shutter without the f-stops on the face. I know that
any shutter that has a "T" or "B" setting can be used
for this, but this shutter seems to come up often
enough & it is usually inexpensive.

I don't have any relationship to the seller... I just
think these things are usefull.
