RE: [pinhole-discussion] Flashing

2001-12-11 Thread Michael Keller
First, you need to know the Guide Number of the flash you're using, so you
can calculate how much light you're putting on the subject. As for light
sources, if you're working in total darkness, you can paint with light to
illuminate the subject, it's background, whatever, moving the light to
simulate multiple light sources. (here's the key light, here's the fill, i
need a little rim light from back and above) If working in color, get some
gels (you only need scraps, a Rosco swatch book has pieces large enough to
cover a flash lens) and paint with colored light. Just remember that you
need to start with the guide number of the flash and do the math to see how
many pops at what distance you need to register some light on the subject
through your pinhole.

Y'know, this is a LOT of work using flashbulbs, you have to change bulbs for
each pop. In the dark.

|Dear Pinholers,
|I found the discussion on using flash interesting. There's an article

|bulbs/cubes on the basis that they were more powerful than most flash
|guns. Unfortunately, at least here in the UK, they're no longer
|available. I've been thinking about using flash for a series of
|portraits and still lifes (?lives) I'm planning. I've converted a
|Pentax to pinhole with an aperture of about f200 and a focal length of

|background to emphasize the objects and was wondering how many flashes I
|would need in those circumstances? I'll be using a starblitz flashgun
|with twin flashes and 35 mm film at 200 asa. Should I use it in

|
|Does anyone have any suggestions?

Katherine, take a look at the bid history again, you'll see it's not listed
in chronological order. abullen placed the $200 bid on Dec 4, and on dec 5
megan8585 placed three quick bids in a row trying to beat abullen, without
of course knowing what abullen's actual bid had been. In each case megan
lost. ianturnbull came in at the end and topped abullen by a few dollars. I
can'r explain megan's three bids on Dec 3, which seemed only to be driving

Was deleting older mail from another list, and found this, thought I'd post
it here:

New Postal Service Equipment May Destroy Film

Responding to the threat of additional anthrax attacks, the United States
Postal Service has announced that it is installing irradiation equipment to
sterilize mail. This security measure, which is reasonable in light of the
current situation, has prompted questions from several members regarding the
possibility of film being damaged or destroyed in the mail.

The Postal Service has cited security concerns and is refusing to give
specific details about the equipment. However, the Postal Service has said
that the irradiation equipment will be similar to that used for food
sterilization. Such food sterilization equipment either uses gamma rays or
electrons, generated by the radioactive isotope Cobalt-60 and electricity
respectively, to destroy bacteria. According to a NASA study obtained by
PPA, these types of so-called soft radiation, are also very efficient in
transferring energy to photographic film. (NASA Contractor Report 188427,
Sept. 1995)

While the potential for film damage and fogging will likely depend on the
settings and types of equipment used, Professional Photographers of America
is urging caution on the part of all members who use the United States
Postal Service to ship film.

2001-11-11 Thread Michael Keller
I've never had a problem with getting a hand check of roll film in a US
airport. I put the film (either in clear cans or NO cans) in a Ziplock bag
in my camera bag, then remove the film and hand it to the security guy while
sending my camera bag and junk through the scanner. In a flight three weeks
ago, where all I carried was my Horizon in a little bag (I was flying to DC
to buy a car and drive it back, no luggage), I let that go through, but for
the first time they all sent all the junk from my pocket through the scanner
(keys, change etc) rather than just handing it through the other side of the
the people scanner. Also, the security folks were checking EVERYthing they
didn't understand, including looking in my fanny pack for my Palm III.g In
the past I've had em look in my camera bag, I guess they're not used to
seeing camera bodies and lenses separately.

From http://www.luminous-landscape.com/mail.htm:

The following is a recent (Oct 26) Alert by the PPA (Professional
Photographers of America).

According to Post Office materials, the USPS is conducting research to
ensure that technology used for sanitizing equipment does not cause other
problems by damaging sensitive material such as videotapes. However, PPA
has not received any concrete assurances from the Post Office that the new
equipment will not harm photographic film.

When asked if Airborne Express was intent on purchasing irradiation
equipment to sanitize parcels, a spokesman for the company stated that he is
not specifically aware of the additional equipment that may or may not be
purchased, and promised to notify PPA of any developments. He also provided
PPA with a copy of a letter sent October 18 to Airborne clients, which notes
that since their shipments are traceable to the originating shipper,
Airborne Express as well as most cargo carriers would not be a popular
target for bioterrorist activity.

Federal Express and United Parcel Service have not yet responded to PPA
inquiries regarding the use of irradiation equipment. When that information
is provided, PPA will notify its members.

Several members have asked about the possibility of damage to CDs.
According to data from manufacturers, compact discs should be immune to
damage from radiation.

Yeah, you should really mix your powder stock chemistry the day before and
allow to cool. For sheet film I use HC110B, so I'm mixing 1/2 ounce of
developer in 15.5 ounces of water. (and not hot) For roll film I use TMax
developer at 1:9, so again, only small amounts of developer into the proper
temp wanter. I will never use powder chemicals again.

RE: [pinhole-discussion] body cap pinhole size and developing Tri-X

2001-09-30 Thread Michael Keller
For film, I would worry about the developer temp but not so much on the
time. A decent thermometer will take care of that. Get a large container
(like a half gallon) and fill that with water at the temperature you need,
then mix the chemistry from that and develop. (that gives you more than
enough for one shot developer, a prewet tray if you use that, and stop bath
or whatever else you may need to mix) Not sure what your developing time is,
I do TMax 100 in HC110B for 7.5 minutes, you can count that off, or use a
clock. If you get a cheap quartz wall clock, you can fix some glow in the
dark tape to the tips of the minute and second hands, stick a piece on the
12 and on wherever you want to count down from, and you have a darkroom
timer.

[pinhole-discussion] RE: crazy pinhole stories

2000-12-30 Thread Michael Keller
I passed along the airport story to my friend that does Cirkut pictures.
(these are the large, rotating camera panoramics, each shot is a 10x6'
sheet of film) He once took his camera to Central America and experienced
airport difficulties, since the films are rolled in tubes that look like
dynamite.g This was his reply:

I would love to know where he was when he had the problem. Small airports
with
clueless bored security people seem to be the worst. My worst problems were
in
Charleston (WV) and Rapid City SD. In Managua they know just what a gun
looks like, what a bomb looks like and what to do about them. They don't
hassle the rest of us. This is not always the case of course. I have a
recollection that Abbas Shirmohammadi was all set up to do a Cirkut shot of
Clinton's last
Inauguration and the security bozos made him take the cirkut cameras down.
He
shot with a Noblex but the pic was kinda crummy.

RE: [pinhole-discussion] swap

2000-12-22 Thread Michael Keller
I have particpated in beer swaps online before, and the way we did it was to
create the list, and each individual sent to TWO other people on the list,
in a sort of round robin way. That way, each person received something
from two others, and only had to ship two packages.

Is this supposed to be a swap or a moving portfolio? If the latter,
everyone could create say three prints (or as many as you want, but plan for
multiple portfolios) and then ship all to one person. The list is divided
into three groups based on location. That person assembles the three
packages and ships to the first three people. Each portfolio keeps
traveling, but only within its geographic area. For instance, maybe one for
Europe, one for Eastern North America, another for Western NA. This would
make the portfolios travel faster, everyone gets to share the expense of
shipping at least once. The only question is what to do with the prints
afterward.

Now if it's truly a swap, where we give prints away, I suggest we borrow
from my beer exchange technique (although we can send to more people if we
want, since prints are easier to ship than beer!g).

RE: [pinhole-discussion] pinhole movie

2000-12-08 Thread Michael Keller
Actually, in my junior year in high school in 1970 we did something like
this. The art teacher had obtained some lengths of clear 16mm film, and
exposed black 16mm film. We cut it up and gave it to various class members
to draw, scratch, color at will. One guy's dad had some 16mm Korean War
film, so we edited scenes of flamethrowers attacking bunkers and lines of
POWs in with our orginal artwork. Taped some garage band rock and roll to
play behind it, and the whole class had a blast. (literally) Gosh, I just
realized how artistically uptight I am in my old age!

Anyway, there is a genre of experimental film in which the artists just
lays the film out and stamps, paints, and scratches it, then processes it
sloppily and awaits the surprises in projection. Film frames are ignored.
Registration is ignored. In this spirit I am making a pinhole movie with a
cardboard box. My stamped images will fall hither and thither and jump
around the screen upon projection.

I suggest using Ektachrome 64 Tungsten, EPY 64. But I photograph artwork for
artists a lot, both in my job at a museum, and privately, and I use
Ektachrome 100VC and two White Lightning strobes with umbrellas. Fine grain
counts. I agree, they should be as good as you can make them. Crop in as
close as you can to the work (if it's framed/matted, minimize the amount of
mat that shows), they want to see the work as big as possible.

-Original Message-

Normally they want a 35mm COPIES of your work. You can do this using some
Photofloods and Kodak 35mm Ektachrome 160T (Tungsten) film. They should be
as good as you can make them.

RE: [pinhole-discussion] 35 mm slides

2000-12-02 Thread Michael Keller
Art show jurying by slides is becoming widespread, so you need to know how
to do this.

Make a good print of your work first. If you have a copystand, that's the
easiest way to shoot it, but basically you want to set up two matching
lights, of proper color temperature, at 45 degree angles to the work. Then
using film that matches the color temp of the lights, meter a grey card,
than photograph the work. I alays advise artists, who think their slides
shot under available light with reflections, glare or mismatched color are
acceptable, that the jurors are judging their slide, not the work.Th e slide
has to look right.

Because reciprocity failure comes about in accumulated exposure. 100 pops of
a flash is accumulated exposure in the same way that 100 seconds of
continuous exposure is. My experience is that you need to account for some
reciprocity failure.

|-Original Message-
|
|
|
|Why would reciprocity failure even be a problem? It occurs when there are
|very long exposure times. I beleive even the slowest flashes on the market
|are much faster than 1/1000 of a sec, so even if you flashed 100 times, it
|would still be less than 1/10 of a sec, which is in the
|reciprocity range of

RE: [pinhole-discussion] READ THIS ONE- Studio Photography

2000-11-20 Thread Michael Keller

|-Original Message-
|
| Ideally if you can get your meter to read F-45 you are doing good. This
| whole bit about doubling your number of flashes to add an extra stop is
| nonsense. Everytime that you flash the strobes you add an extra stop of
| light. Lets say that I set up my lights and get a meter reading of F-45.
| Lets count: F-45, F-60, F-90, F-128 That equals 4.

You have to be kidding, right? In regular shutter speeds, let's see, 1/30 is
twice the exposure of 1/60. 1/15 is twice the exposure of 1/30, or FOUR
times the exposure of 1/60. 1/8 is twice 1/15, or FOUR times 1/30, or EIGHT
times 1/60.

Now you pop your flash once. That's 1/60. You pop it twice, that's 1/30. If
you pop it three times, that's NOT 1/15. You need FOUR pops to make 1/15,
and EIGHT pops to make 1/8.

Every change in stop is 1/2 or twice the exposure of the previous stop.

When kids ask me what they need to know to be a good photographer, I tell
them Math!

RE: [pinhole-discussion] studio photography / flash

2000-11-20 Thread Michael Keller
On large format, I've used multiple flashes many times to get F/32 or
smaller in a studio. If your pinhole is effectively f200 or something, you
will certainly need multiple flashes. If you have a flashmeter, just read
the light as normal, extrapolate out to your real f/stop (double the flashes
for every f/stop change, see below*), darken the room, turn out the modeling
light(!), find a comfy chair and some sunglasses, and start popping and
counting.g Plan to add some pops at the end because of reciprocity.

*If your flashmeter reads one flash at f/16 (for your ISO), and your pinhole
is f/250, that's 8 stops, so it's 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256 pops!

RE: [pinhole-discussion] Re: motion picture, registration, basicpinhole info

2000-11-15 Thread Michael Keller
Photography with movie film is the same as photography with a still camera,
it's still a function of film speed vs f/stop (aperture) vs shutter speed.
Usually, movie cameras are set for one shutter speed, so the f/stop is set
based on film speed (and perhaps adjusted by neutral density filters if they
wish there was less light).

So OK, in this case you'll have a fixed f/stop, so you need to determine the
shutter speed. What's the film's ISO? You're f/stop won't be 2, it will be
more like 1/300 or something. There are calculators online where you can
figure out the time exposure for that f/stop, all you need to do is light
the scene and use your regular still camera as a light meter to get a
starting exposure (which you then extrapolate out with the calculator). If
you're experienced you can also do the extrapolation in your head, but I'm
not getting that impression from your posts.g

As for making an animated film, you're going to need a box that simulates a
real movie camera, with chambers for the feed and take up reel and the film
passing through a gate that will keep the registered and not expose
adjoining frames. That's the tricky part, but if you are using 16mm film,
how many sprocket holes to a frame, one? If you had something inside that
clicked as a sprocket hole passed over it, you could get a rough
registration, the same way a Watson bulk film loader clicks every eight
sprockets to let you know you've loaded one frame of 35mm film.

This sounds real interesting, if you get this even close to being off the
ground, I have an animation teacher friend that would be interested to hear
about it.

|Ed: With humble gratitude to all on the list, I must confess I can't
|imagine measuring a pinhole to the thousandths of an inch. You are right
|that a Bolex with a pinhole would work wonderfully, too. I guess I was
|hoping to bypass the need for a Bolex. I did build the camera. It
|actually required that I buy a $1.50 needle and .79 of dowel rod, no more.
|I had a shipping box, etc., lying around. Part of the charm for me is

|But to address the practical matters, you may be right about the
