Hi all,

I was prompted from a query on an another photo list to do a bit of
research about a blind photographer I had seen an exbition of, some time
ago, here in Montreal.

I thought I would share this with you also, even if this is not pinhole.

The photographer is Evgen Bavcar. Born in Slovenia in 1946, he now
lives in France. He began to lose his sight at the age of eleven and
started to do photography then. He works with an assistant and does
outstanding work. He holds a PhD in Aesthetics Philisophy. He has also
writen several books and lectures in Europe.

He has an excellent web site on Zone Zero at
http://www.zonezero.com/exposiciones/fotografos/bavcar/

Hope you enjoy.

Be very careful with this book! I bought it thinking I would just make

a wonderful totally digital darkroom, but you know, I still haven't gotten

I am glad someone else knows of this book - perhaps it would help me to
read

some information on the alt-photo-process list Would you have the web

Also when I was in the gallery where I discovered the book I saw the prints

Re: [pinhole-discussion] Room size pinholes

2001-07-21 Thread Tina Martin
There is a photographer who does large room size pinhole photos and also
photos in a converted van.
He did a workshop here in Toronto during Contact 1999, part of the Pinhole
workshop. A room was converted to make a giant pinhole camera, sheets of
photo paper were pinned up to the wall, and were developed by sloshing the
developer around on the paper with brushes while it was laid out on the
floor. I think Gregg took that workshop. The person who taught it was from
Europe, and had a website, but I forget his name. Gregg, do you remember?

What will happen to the site after the end of May? I haven't seen any

2001-05-03 Thread Tina Martin
That's great, Gregg! I figured out the bookmark method shortly after
sending my post. Seems the 'cookie' function works somewhat erratically on
my system and doesn't always start me where I left off. Oh well!

Tina

Tina and others,

I have been working on improvements to the navigation of the gallery this
past week.

Currently, (unless you block cookies being set on your computer) you should
always return to the last photo you look at in the exhibit.

I am working on a new navigation bar that includes jumping directly to the
end (or to the start) with one click, or going directly to any photo by
typing in its number. I hope to have this ready by this weekend.

In the meantime, you can jump to any photo in the exhibit by using a url
with this pattern:

http://www.pinholeday.org/exhibition/?photo=86

(just substitute any valid number for 86, an invalid number just tells you
the photo was not found)

Other ways of navigating in the gallery include the search which returns
1 or more photos that match your search word, and participants, which
returns a list of all participants in a country. From the list of
participants, you can link to their photo.

As soon as the new navigation bar is ready, I'll post it to the list.

[pinhole-discussion] comments re new images

2001-04-16 Thread Tina Martin

Thanks to all who took time to look!

These particular images were 'hand coloured' in Photoshop. I have a pen
tablet which makes this much easier. For those interested in trying the
technique, the easiest way is to 1-change the image mode from grayscale to
RGB 2-Create a new layer, choosing 'colour' as the type in the drop down
menu box. 3- Set the opacity to around 30-40% in whatever tool you choose to
use. I sometimes use the brush, sometimes the airbrush. Colour away!
I used to do a lot of handcolour work on fibre based darkroom prints and am
still experimenting with various inkjet papers for handcolouring. For those
interested in handcolouring visit www.handcolor.com

The indoor lighting was not controllable, but I was really interested to see
what could be done with the very contrasty situtations. The contrast was
adjusted in Photoshop as the best that could be done.

Guillermo, the exposures were about 125-250 outside and 1/30 inside.

Best,

I know I could not read cd-roms of tiff files burned on a mac on my pc, but
could read zip files of tiffs created on my pc on a mac!
In other words, I'm totally confused. (as usual) Sorry this is a bit off

Hi everybody!

Really this has been busy times for me lately. But, it seems I just

just had to try it on some of my favorite negatives. What a discovery!
To me Lith Printing is a natural complement to pinhole.

Comments welcome!

Anybody else does lith printing on this list? I'd be happy to hear and
share experiences.

Cheers,

Guy

P.S. Lith Printing is a special BW printing process using specific
types of paper and a specific type of paper developer. The paper is
massively overexposed under the enlarger and processed in highly diluted
developer for very a long period of times (from 8 to 30 minutes, with
constant agitation...). The print turns in shades of colors and yields
very different contrasts ranges in the highlights and the shadows.
Something like split toning, but different, all taking place at the
developer stage.

Tina

From: Guy Glorieux guy.glori...@sympatico.ca

I find this beginning thread very interesting. Process is at the root
of what we do as pinholers. This is a craftmanship process which leads
to a product that is in many ways unique. Much more so than in lens
photography, although there can be a lot of process in lens
photography. But I tend to think that lens photographers look for the
ability to consistently REPEAT the process, whereas, to me pinhole
photography is more an exploration of how far the process allows me to
go without breaking down.

Well, you know, a lot of people hide behind the equipment question and think
that if only they had the right or a really good camera they could be
great photographers. What is really missing is the confidence in themselves
and their own vision. They don't really believe it's the person that clicks
the shutter (removes the lenscap?)that creates the magic. Too bad they are
afraid to screw up, to allow that old serendipidy to happen.

Not supprizing, they are all hardware geeks. They are in love with the

I use an Epson 760 for my quadtone printing with MIS quadtone ink and a

cheaply, as can the 1160. Note that the 760 and 1160 do not use the new

piezography system also works with the 760, but as Gregg says is pricey. If

[pinhole-discussion] print swap

2000-12-25 Thread Tina Martin
Looks like a lot of people are interested in the 'swap'. On another list I
belong to (Epson printer) a travelling portfolio of prints was organized.
Those interested contributed a print. One person co-ordinated the list and
the gathering of the prints. Once the group of prints was gathered, it
travelled from person to person on the list who had contributed a print.
Thus all participants saw the whole set, but didn't have to make a huge
number of prints. I think a maximum size of 8x10 was decided, although
prints could be smaller. This was somewhat a function of the size of
people's inkjet printers. I think a cut off date was also established for
receipt of prints to be included in the portfolio. The cost only involved
the mailing of the prints to the next person and creation of one print each,
so those who wanted to play could afford to. The only downside was not being
able to keep the prints! As for theme, I like the self portrait idea.If it
does not turn out to be a major financial/time committment, I would like to
join.

[pinhole-discussion] Re: digital giclee

2000-12-03 Thread Tina Martin

Hi Tina

What do you mean by digital giclee prints? I think
someone else asked about this. You might want to reply
on list.

Thanks

Colin

Hi Colin!
Giclee is a fancy term used to describe photographic inkjet prints. They
were originally produced on Iris proof printers which cost $20,000.0 plus.
Over the past few years Epson has come out with a number of printers capable
of making real photo quality prints on a wide variety of artist papers such
as watercolour. The problem with Epson is that their inks are not very
archival at all. However many third party companies producing archival ink
for both colour and black and white work soon appeared, and people started
filling their own cartridges with the archival ink. The printers range from
desktop 8 1/2 x 11 in size up to the epson 9000 which can produce prints
about 40 wide and any length. The latest wrinkle is that the newest epson
printers have a digital chip in the cartridge to prevent third party non
epson ink cartridges from being used. No one is happy about this, and it
remains to be seen if Yankee ingenuity can get around it! The reviews of
epson's latest effort to produce an archival ink/paper combination are
mixed. It also gets quite expensive if one cannot refill or use a continuous
bulk ink system feed. There are high end service bureaus that produce
prints, again quite pricey. I could go on for pages, its a whole other
photographic world!

Re: [pinhole-discussion] new image upload

Hi Colin!
Thanks for your comments. The waterfall image was taken on Ilford Delta 3200
film with my 2 1/4 converted Lubitel Zone Plate. The umbrella was taken with
a lovely zone plate made by Guillermo Penate for my 35 mm Canon, also on
Delta 3200. Both were developed in Rodinal and then worked on in Photoshop.
I do a lot of work with curves in Photoshop to adjust the tonal range of the
final image since the zone plate negs never have much contrast. I have
printed zone plate negs in my regular BW darkroom, but it's a lot easier to
get the results I want digitally. I do almost all my work as digital giclee
prints now, both colour and BW. There are a lot of great watercolour type
papers for printing available. I use Generation colour ink and MIS Quadtone
black inks in two different printers, one for colour and one for BW.

Sorry for the inevitable technical question, but what
kind of camera? We talked briefly before about my
frustration with zone plate, but you've got both the
ethereal haloes and good contrast.

I have just moved to California from Japan (after 18
years!) and will be working less. I hope to have the
time to get back to zone plate and do some more
exploring.

Colin

Re: [pinhole-discussion] posting of images to the list?

2000-08-25 Thread Tina Martin
Great image Gregg! It took no longer to download than a 'regular' message.
But then, I'm on a cable modem connected 24/7. BTW even the high speed
connection slows to a crawl when there is heavy traffic.
I think it would be nice to be able to post images to the list, but the
format would have to be limited to jpeg and under 100k, I would think. Also,
maybe not more than 1 or 2 images per message.
