Hi,

I just wanted to thank everyone who adds their comments at the top of
the reply instead of at the bottom. It saves time and scrolling down
the page of every reply is only good for being annoying.

On some lists, the TOPIC of "top posting" is a hot button topic -- at least
for some readers / posters. (and never mind even mentioning trollers and
flamers... yikes).

As far as whether this is one of those lists, ask someone else. But I think
the last time someone tried to get a "consensus" within PLUG-discuss, on
whether to "top post" or "bottom post", I think the "consensus" was,
umm... something along the lines of, trying to "orchestrate" PLUG-discuss
is like trying to herd cats...
(YMMV)
good luck ...

It's a near-religious topic which seldom gets useful discussion.

The general consensus is that people are going to do whatever they want.
I think it's also generally realized that no matter what method someone
uses there will people who think it's the right way and there will be
people who think it's the wrong way.

In any case, write for your audience.

Also, there is no need to start a thread on this topic :).

I tend to ignore all such control-versy.

"Should" is a product of the codependent family model that also created:

black/white thinking
nothing handled in the solution
communicating to the wrong source

There's a saying, "Is someone is "should-ing" you, find and handle the 7
deadly sin type payoff" (false pride, jealousy, rage, greed, gluttony,
vanity, lust).

Almost as fun as identifying the obvious signature of someone with ethical
problem in relation to you who always "project", accusing you of doing
something their ego denial refuses to let them see/remember and apologise
for what they did to you.

Since this thread seems to have a life despite everyone's acknowledgment
that it never changes anything...

There are times when I don't want to bother replying to a top posted
reply because I am too lazy to re-arrange it so the context of any
comments might actually make sense.

Most 'top posters' are too lazy to actually clean up the e-mail below to
just retain the pertinent items to which they are responding to, leaving
the challenge to the next reader to figure it out.

That said, I generally don't care if the point is about communication,
it either succeeds in its mission or doesn't and there's nothing
inherently changed whether the reply is on the top or bottom.

Handheld devices, twitter, e-mail all seem to be conspiring to dumb down
our communication efforts so we say less, communicate less effectively
at a rate much faster than ever before.

I don't recall anyone saying 'should' in this thread but I suspect that
Lisa is just playing the tune that's been played so many times before
and I will take that bait. People 'should' endeavor to make their point
relative to the point expressed before them in a way that someone making
a counterpoint could easily add their message yet be able to effectively
communicate. For me, that means either at the bottom or interspersed
within the replied sections. If you are inclined to 'top reply', take a
moment to clean up below so it becomes obvious what you are replying to.

I find it almost as annoying as when people don't trim the footers that
gnu-mailman tags onto mails (which I have been guilty of a few times)

Whether I top or bottom post mostly depends on if I'm in GMail or KMail...

1. top posting is the default with Micro$oft Outlook, and a lot of us are
FORCED into using it at the office. So most people being outlook users will
tend to do "what comes natural" /wrt email systems.

2. it might not be laziness as much as time-starved, as in it takes less time
to reply that way than other ways.

3. what I hate MUCH more than top posting, is those FW'd emails from my
relatives that have forwarded their mail from 25 different people (not
bothering to strip out all the headers etc. this makes for an email whose
"meat" is at the last 10 lines of a 1000 line email.

To some extent, I agree. I always have the prerogative to delete and move on or
reply.

I will sometimes ask people to trim their replies but in reality, I
don't have a mission to correct people on what I believe is the right
way. I didn't bring up this thread. I don't want to be the list mom. I
make rules for no one but myself.

People that I expect to know better might very well not get a reply if I
am put off by the html, untrimmed replies, etc. I have no dog in this
fight...the options are mine. I do agree that arbitrary rules insistence
fights are generally much worse than the intransigence of a few.

Yeah, and next you'll want us to beautify it.

The problem I have with bottom posters, is when there is a long message,
taking the time to scroll through all the stuff I've already read.

The copy is there if I need to refer to it, so I don't have to go opening up
other emails.

But I'll tell you the most annoying thing, is when you are sending questions
in multiple emails to someone, and they don't include the original in the
reply.

You get back answers like "I agree with that" and "I don't agree with that"

And you're supposed to figure which ones. Arg lol

I have had this happen, I told them if they don't include the original, I
won't email them anymore. lol, it worked.

Bob,

You use Gmail, Gmail collapses top posts just the same as bottom posts (in
the web client)

So, for those who prefer top posting can have their top posts,
Those who "don't wanna have to scroll", like you dont.

Bob,

You use Gmail, Gmail collapses top posts just the same as bottom posts (in
the web client)

So, for those who prefer top posting can have their top posts,
Those who "don't wanna have to scroll", like you dont.

As in their time is more valuable than my time?

If you have the time to reply, you have the time to trim.

do you mean aside from the copies that the NSA has? To paraphrase Bill
Maher, "mail yourself a copy of the Constitution once in a while just so
you can hope that those in government might actually read it."

G-Mail and others allow you to use your own mail client application
anyway so you're not stuck with only having to use their web mail
client.

yes, G-mail is free regardless of how you use it.

I believe Yahoo has changed and you can also use it with your own e-mail
client but if you pay for Yahoo 'premium' services, you do get more
options. You might want to check on their 'free' services as I think
they have changed.

Yes, You can connect to GMail via POP3 or IMAP without any additional fees.
You can also have GMail check and consolidate your other POP3 accounts without

post, and remove it from the second.

So when you read the second you'll wonder what I'm talking about.

And if you filter my posts out, I'll sign up as Leo G Carroll, aka "Topper"

RE: Format

2009-05-19 Thread Bryan O'Neal
On posting
1) Top posting means I don't have to scroll through a ton of crap to read
the new message. However if I desire I can easily see the context by
scrolling down. If I read this in digest mode where I only read the last
message in a thread, then yha, bottom posting would make more sense.
2) Use a threaded email client that removes the extraneous copies of prior
content and you never have to worry about this again. All messages are
either top or bottom posted depending on how you order the thread.

really the top post vs bottom post is a personal prefrence.

I like top posted email, personally it means i can get to their
response, and if I am lost i have an email thread to get back to.

does not mean i cannot understand the logic of a bottom post it just
means its my preference...

video format

2012-08-21 Thread Michael Havens
well, I figured out that with youtube-dl you need to know the format of the
video to extract the audio (I suppose that means it actually is for
ffmpeg). How does one figure out the format of the original file if it
isn't listed in the file extension?

moin moin,

this one comes from an office suite claiming to already have ODF support.

If China moves to an office suite that supports ODF that'll go a long way
to breaking the binary office format monopoly.

mp3 means "MPEG-1, layer 3". I've seen a few .mp2 files in the wild; those
were probably MPEG-1 layer 2. ID3 is a standard for embedding information
like artist, title, album, track, genre, and so forth into a formatted block
of data within an audio file.

OT: Cracking Quickbooks format

2007-07-03 Thread Vaughn Treude
Hello:
For quite some time I've been wanting to move my company books form
QuickBooks to GnuCash or some other Linux application. I was having
difficulty finding a way to convert my existing data, but I
procrastinated. Recently something happened that convinced me to do it.
  Sad story follows:

I have a copy of QB Pro 99 I need to move to a newer Windoze computer,
yet when I installed it, it refused to read my data files, because they
were from a "newer" version. Huh? What I believe caused that is the
fact that I allowed Intuit to update my QB99 online. I've posted a
question to their forum. If their answer is "buy a new version", I
swear I'll never give Intuit another nickel. I did some searching and
discovered a product called DataBlox (a Windows product, at
datablox.com) which claims to be able to extract data from all QB
formats. It costs $99 and even if this is more expensive than buying a
new QB, at least I wouldn't be giving my money to Inuit.

Does anyone know of any cheaper alternatives? I'm having trouble
locating "quickbooks hacks" because there are at least 100 programs out
there to recover lost QB passwords, which causes Google to return a lot
of noise.

While googling I've also found a lot of examples of Intuit's obnoxious
business practices. The worst was requiring banks to pay extra to
support Quicken for Mac, which means that a lot of banks won't support
Mac users, even though THE FILE FORMAT USED IS IDENTICAL. It is an a
totally artificial crippling of the product. (BTW, the poster found a
workaround by configuring his copy of QB with a different bank's ID.)
Intuit is probably losing money doing this - unless MS is paying them
off to discourage the Mac - which I doubt, since MS makes most of its
money on Office, not the OS.

Intuit is evil!

Re: OT: Cracking Quickbooks format

2007-07-03 Thread fouldragon

You should see their online product.

My employer used it for a while for time-card submissions.

Windows-only.

IE only.

Download of a "Trust us, it's safe" ActiveX control required, with
instructions as to how to work around the fact that recent Windows
versions don't think it's too hot that you do that.

If you had a Mac, their suggestion was to buy Parallels or the
equivalent.

That's burying the chutzpah needle if you ask me.

Plus, the package sucked in the usability department.

Quickbooks - at least the version I have - is pretty limited on its
export capabilities. I could probably do a whole bunch of reports and
get the data out, but that would be too much work, I think. Though I
don't know how usable the output from DataBlox is, either.

Now there would be a 180-degree turn.
Another funny thing about QuickBooks- I got tired of paying for the tax
table updates, when the amounts weren't changing all that much, and I'm
the sole employee of my company anyway. So QB warns you at first that
the tax tables are out of date, but eventually it refuses to do any
payroll calculations at all. At this point I gave them the benefit of
the doubt, because our hyper-litigious society makes companies do some
pretty idiotic things. Instead of renewing, I just did a spreadsheet to
calculate all the amounts, and plugged them in each month. (The IRS
publishes the formulas in its Employers Tax Guide.) A bit of a pain,
but not so bad when you have only one paycheck to create.

Yes, I've also seen a lot of negative comments about the regular
product's usability. I've gotten used to it, though. But I sure
wouldn't want to run my private financial info through somebody's web
site, especially if I was forced to use IE.

How to format an external hard drive?

2008-09-22 Thread Josef Lowder
I received a small 38-Gig external harddrive as a gift
and it is apparently formatted with an ntfs file system.

It mounts automatically when I plug it in to my Mandriva
system USB port, and I can read the files that are there,
but I cannot write to it as it gives a message "read only
file system."

So, what would be the best way to format it as a fat 32
so I can plug it in and use it on either my Linux system
or on my xp laptop?

While I have not used it for anything, below are some of the
files that I found on this HD:

Contents of external HD:

Nice observation. I don't know to what extent it would be available. The
seeds would undoubtedly be there (I see 1349 seeds and 262 peers
presently). I'm not sure how someone would find the torrent w/out the
link though. I'm guessing that someone would have to make the torrent
file available somewhere. Anyone know the details of torrents?

How 'legal' is it for someone to upload the torrent somewhere?
I'll bet it's all voer TPB by now (along with the illegitimate PDFs of the
other 100 or so issues, but that's beside the point) and depending on the
legality I have no problem uploading my copy of the torrent somewhere.

I don't know (IANAL). I think it's pretty cheesy of them though to use

Stupid

(or maybe not-so-stupid?) marketing scam.

They're giving you a magazine and DVD for free. How is that a scam?
(Are you expecting it to be full of adware?)

The 'limited time' thing is probably to create a sense of urgency,
which I agree is cheesy, but I hardly think that deserves to be called
a scam. I'm sure they're hoping you'll like what you get, and maybe
subscribe for real. Letting you try their magazine before you pay up
seems like a very honest way to promote their product.

Re: Free current issue Linux Format 24hrs!

2009-03-04 Thread Stephen P Rufle
This is from what was in the zip. It is for promoting their magazine,
but good for them.

You're probably wondering why we're doing this, and that's fair enough -
it's not something we've done before, and we may never do it again.

Well, we're doing it because sales of Linux Format shot up 13% last year
despite print magazines around the world suffering a decline, and we
want to thank everyone for their support by giving away this entire
magazine for free.

Enjoy it. Learn from it. Give it to your friends. Pass it around at your
user group.

If you want more, we hope you know where to go. After all, Linux Format
is available from all good news outlets worldwide every four weeks, or
you can subscribe and get it delivered to your door.

Speaking of subscriptions...

OK, so you didn't think we'd give away all this stuff without at least a
little prod to encourage folks to read the print magazine, did you?

If you want the cheapest way to read Linux Format every month, you can
subscribe today at http://tinyurl.com/podcastlxf for just US $99 for 13
issues - that's about 70 Euros if you live in Euroland, or about AUD
$150 if you live in Australia. UK readers can pay £11.99 every quarter.

If price is of less interest to you, try this subscription offer
instead, because it includes some awesome geek fridge magnets letting
you spell out shell commands, comedy phrases and more on any magnetic
surface.

P2P makes perfect sense to distribute the load, even when they pull the
torrent, people still in the process of downloading will be able to finish
from the peers. There just won't be a link to start any more downloads.

I don't know (IANAL). I think it's pretty cheesy of them though to use the
"limited time" pitch and then use a torrent for distribution. Stupid (or
maybe not-so-stupid?) marketing scam.

Stupid

(or maybe not-so-stupid?) marketing scam.

They're giving you a magazine and DVD for free. How is that a scam?
(Are you expecting it to be full of adware?)

The 'limited time' thing is probably to create a sense of urgency,
which

I agree is cheesy, but I hardly think that deserves to be called a
scam. I'm sure they're hoping you'll like what you get, and maybe
subscribe for real. Letting you try their magazine before you pay up
seems like a very honest way to promote their product.

Thanks, Alex. Scam was the wrong word. How about ploy?

Sure, ploy it is. Might have worked in my case. I'm thinking about
subscribing.

i have always liked Linux format, but im not good with hardcopy subscriptions...

i like the idea of a browseable soft copy personally

the DVD of stuff its cool, but not a bigone for me... cause of that
magazine's nature they rarely have something that has to come off the
dvd since its a majority of opensource... and bandwidth isn't as big a
deal as it once was, when pulling a 4 cd OS install over a mode could
take you the better part of 3 days.

You can't format a mounted drive. You have to umount it first and then
run mkfs.vfat if you want to have it be a FAT filesystem.

First unplug the drive.

# fdisk -l

This will tell you which drive you dont want to format.

Plug in the other drive.

# fdisk -l

Now we know how your system recognizes the drive we want to format.

Now unmount the drive

# umount /dev/sdx# or whatever its called in place of sdx

# fdsik /dev/sdx # delete the ntfs part. and recreate it win95 LBA

# partprobe # cause the kernel to reread the partition table

# mkfs.vfat /dev/sdx # create a filesystem on it.

You should be able to remove and reinsert it and be in business.

I run Mandriva 2008 and have had problems with flash drives and fat
partitions and for me to be able to use them in both os's I had to
format them from windows.

I have run NTFS systems before without any issue, the NTFS drivers can do RW
without problem.
How old is your Mandriva?
Get Kubuntu...:)

PS: The instructions given to you that start "fdisl -l" are correct, so I'm

How to rename and format a flash drive?

2010-08-08 Thread joe

How can I rename and format my cruzer 2-gig flash drive so I can install a
live distro?

Searching the 'net, I found pendrivelinux.com which offered a "Universal"
pen drive installer. When tried to use it, it couldn't see my flash drive.
I then found the instructions shown below to "Restore a USB Key to it's
original state."

All seemed to work well, until step #7: "umount /dev/sdx" ... fdisk
originally identified my flash drive by the name: sdf ... but after step
#7 did not work, the installer said that I should reboot the computer so
the flash drive would be recognized. When I did that, the flash drive
then showed up as sdb1 (which didn't seem right) and the system now sees
it as a "DVD" drive and I can't do anything with it.

So, how can I rename this flash drive back to "sdf" and reformat it so I
can use it to install a Linux live iso?

   www.pendrivelinux.com/restoring-your-usb-key-partition/
To restore a flash pen drive to it's original state.
A. First delete the old partitions that remain on the USB key.
 1. Open a terminal and type sudo su
 2. Type fdisk -l and note your USB drive letter.
 3. Type fdisk /dev/sdx (replacing x with your drive letter)
 4. Type d to delete a partition
 5. Type 1 to select the 1st partition and press enter
 6. Type d to delete another partition (fdisk will select the second)

B. Next we need to create the new partition.
 1. Type n to make a new partition
 2. Type p to make this partition primary and press enter
 3. Type 1 to make this the first partition and then press enter
 4. Press enter to accept the default first cylinder
 5. Press enter again to accept the default last cylinder
 6. Type w to write the new partition information to the USB key

*** everything from this point on did not work ***

 7. Type umount /dev/sdx (replacing x with your drive letter)

C. Last step: create the fat filesystem.
 1. Type mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/sdx1 replace x with your USB key drive ltr

You now have a restored USB key with a single fat 16 partition.

*** And the flash drive is useless at this point. ***

After further searching the 'net, I did find a way to format the flash
drive by using gparted. But I still don't know how to set the name of the
drive to 'sdf' instead of 'sdb1' ... and the Universal live flash-drive
installer still does not find the flash drive.

try this one. It will fully format your drive at the same time as it
copies over your distro, whichever you want

I have used the windows version several times with great success. and
used the Linux version once. (worked)

And if all that fails, try just having windows format it. Give it the name
you want on the format dialog and DO NOT use quick format. I don't know
what it is but Windows does something in the format that the Linix utilities
do not. I've gotten at least two rives back that way.

I would think so too but I have not found it. I do run Windows for gaming
and to try things for the people I support and for a few stick problems,
that has been the only solution that works. I have not been able to find

0. Install ImageMagick (if it's not already there)
1. convert FILE.cr2 FILE.jpg
2. if FILE.jpg is not an appropriate JPEG, or you get an error message from
convert about image formats, that's when you go to
http://www.imagemagick.org/script/command-line-options.php and start digging
for useful junk. You may have to tell convert what the width and height of
the original were, for instance.

I've always grabbed files from my digicam as JPEG not RAW, but I could try
grabbing one as RAW and trying /usr/bin/convert after dinner. Will let the
list know what I find, as it might educate me and/or the list.

You could use UFraw which has a plug-in for GIMP and then you just edit the

Well, #include . According to everything I'm seeing in The Fine
Manual for my camera, it won't record still images in anything but JPEG. Joe,
if you want to send me a test RAW image for me to try to fiddle with, please
do so. If it's over 8M, use split to split it up into 4M slices before
mailing it to me, or holler at me off-list and I'll get you a user account so
you can scp/WinSCP/sftp:// the file right to my webhost.

Thanks for the offer Matt. This question was actually for our daughter who
is home for a visit and doesn't have her usual system resources to do the
conversion as she is used to doing it. But the previous suggestion to use
'convert' worked okay albeit incredibly slowly. She is at a much higher
level of expertise in both photography and computers than me and uses much
more sophisticated equipment. I just use a point and shoot camera. She
uses a sophisticated Canon to take 25-meg shots. I use a Kodak to take
1/2-meg jpg shots ;)

Photoshop and perhaps Canon RAW converter utilities. However, since she doesn't
have access to her usual tools, she can use irfanview (www.irfanview.com). It's
windows based freeware image display and converter application. When I want to
do quick and dirty RAW conversions in batch, I use this.
Basically, it's the VLC of the image world, it'll display pretty much any image
format in existence. Unfortunately, it's only Windows based. If you're running
only Linux, perhaps you can get it running via Wine.

Hope this helps.
Peter

Thanks for the offer Matt. This question was actually for our daughter who
is home for a visit and doesn't have her usual system resources to do the
conversion as she is used to doing it. But the previous suggestion to use
'convert' worked okay albeit incredibly slowly. She is at a much higher
level of expertise in both photography and computers than me and uses much
more sophisticated equipment. I just use a point and shoot camera. She
uses a sophisticated Canon to take 25-meg shots. I use a Kodak to take
1/2-meg jpg shots ;)

1. convert FILE.cr2 FILE.jpg
2. if FILE.jpg is not an appropriate JPEG, or you get an error ...
I've always grabbed files from my digicam as JPEG not RAW, but I could
try grabbing one as RAW and trying /usr/bin/convert after dinner.

Well, According to everything I'm seeing in The Fine Manual
for my camera, it won't record still images in anything but JPEG.
Joe, if you want to send me a test RAW image for me to try to fiddle
with, please do so. If it's over 8M, use split to split it up into
4M slices before mailing it to me, or holler at me off-list and
I'll get you a user account so
you can scp/WinSCP/sftp:// the file right to my webhost.

If you want to adjust values in a GUI I enjoy Darktable:
