[SlimDevices: Plugins] Meedio SlimServer plugin

2006-02-16 Thread catdna

Hi All

Well, it's been a long time coming / planning but I'm nearly there.

My Meedio Plugin (http://www.meedio.com) is nearing completion and I'd
like a little feedback (from those who are interested) in what they'd
like to see in the finished version.

The plugin is still pretty basic at the moment in that it allows you to
:

1. Choose a player to control
2. Choose albums / tracks
3. Choose artists / albums / tracks

err.. and that's about it (at least, that's all I want it for)

One exciting thing about this plugin is the speed - it's *very* fast
(compared to the sloth-like web interface for SlimServer - at least it
is on my mini-itx box ;-)

It works against the back end database of SlimServer itself (not using
the CLI / Web interface), with none of the 'pauses' that you get using
the SlimServer web-ui. (The CLI is used for certain calls / playing
songs etc)

There's a few screen shots linked below :

Browsing Albums
http://www.catdna.co.uk/slimserver/browse_albums_1.jpg

Browsing Artists / Albums
http://www.catdna.co.uk/slimserver/browse_artist_albums.jpg

Browsing Album Tracks
http://www.catdna.co.uk/slimserver/album_tracks.jpg

Now Playing / Player Selection
http://www.catdna.co.uk/slimserver/now_playing.jpg

(sorry for the small size / resolution - these files were huge!
and ignore the horrible background image, I was just 'playing' - the
final version will use whatever images you setup in Meedio for your
theme).

Now, I'd like a little feedback as I get close to finishing this
project - is there anything people would like to see in this ?

There's an option to search / browse by Genre and of course, it'll need
a 'search' facility (artist / album / track etc), but I was wondering if
anybody needed / wanted anything else ?

I'm writing this for myself mainly (I have a squeezebox2 and the sound
quality just blows away the FMOD / BASS interface from meedio - hence
the reason for writing this in the first place).

One idea I've been toying with is running an external program / script
on the startup / shutdown of the module (I'll be using it with HIP to
blast IR codes to switch my AMP into SqueezeBox mode )

Let me know what you think

Cheers

Chris

 Slim shows the following upon it's death;

 Undefined subroutine Slim::Utils::Misc::escape called at
 /usr/local/slimserver//Plugins/LastFM/Plugin.pm line 883.

I'm running the latest 6.2 nightly as well
as the latest versions of Last.FM and Scrobbler on a Linux box.

Looks like you're running the wrong version of the plugin.
For SS 6.2 it's not the latest version available on my web page - you
need 1.1.6 for SS 6.2
I have tried to make this clear but people seem to just want to download
the latest version regardless!

If this is the case please see if these problems are solved.

There isn't much documentation because
A) i've been too lazy to write any (the real reason)
but
B) my experience (from the iTunes Update plugin) is that people don't
read documentation anyway
C) hence I've tried to make the operation of the plugin as clear as
possible so it's not required

Any suggestions on how to improve this situation are welcome...

James

Nice music selections in your music collection. The Now Playing screenshot
doesn't look correct though - you appear to have Jimi Hendrix album artwork
showing up, but the selected item is a Porcupine Tree track.

Also, when you select an album to play, does the music that you select to play
get added in track order? Only I notice that you have the mighty Groundhogs
Split Part 2 queued to play before Split Part 1.

James,

As one of the earliest people to bug you about this plugin, I'm happy
to have a crack at some basic instructions by way of a thank you - it's
kind of what I do in real life anyway and won't take long. Let me draft
something up and send it over to you.

At the moment I've got my main development PC running Meedio and my
mini-itx box running slimserver - it works just fine (although like I
said, you have to use Meedio's Config Application to 'point' to the

the slimserver database on the network (but as I don't do any 'writes'
a read-only file share should be ok).

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: More Last.FM problems

2006-02-16 Thread jmpage2

James,

Thanks for all of the help, you've of course hit it on the head, I had
the wrong version of the plugin.

Being in the IT industry myself (network stuff) I'm not a complete
idiot, so allow me to explain how this happened.

When the official Last.FM site is visited it provides a direct link to
the Audioscrobbler plugin for the Squeezebox but gives no mention
whatsoever that without your Last.FM plugin for internet radio support
all that will happen is your user data will be submitted to Last.FM.

In my haste to get the proper plugin I did not check the version and
hence the mistake.

I would be happy to assist with documentation. I have three initial
suggestions.

1. Kindly ask the SlimScrobbler people and/or the Last.FM folks to
include a link to YOUR plugin and an explanation that BOTH plugins are
needed to actually accomplish music playback with Last.FM service on
the Squeezebox.

2. Include a readme file with every release of Last.FM that indicates
what version it is intended for (I realize this is on the website, but
I think it would help quite a bit).

3. In the same readme include some very basic documentation for setup
of the application, including some sample radio stations, etc. I would
be happy to assist with drafting something for you to include.

Thanks again, now that the service is working I'm really happy with how
your plugin works!

JM,

I don't disagree with you that things can always be made clearer but as
far as I recall, both LastFM and Slimscrobbler to provide such links and
explanation. I can't access LastFM from work, but here is the
Slimscrobbler reference:

If you want to listen to Last.FM internet radio through your
Squeezebox, then you also need James Craig's Last.FM plugin [linked] -
and very good it is too.

http://slimscrobbler.sourceforge.net/

I believe the same page is linked from the LastFM site.

Sorry my original post probably wasn't clear - on the slimscrobbler
page that I posted there is a [imho] pretty clear link directly to
James' plugin. That same page (the slimscrobbler page) is linked from
the LastFM site. It's the bit that says James Craig's plugin.

I do however agree with you that there is scope for some specific

I am playing a last.fm feed. Is it supposed to see the music from my
 own collection that I choose?

Ah, a perfect opportunity to share the joy and explain how some of
this works!

OK, here's how it works. You need to put your user name and password
in the slimscrobbler plugin (in the plugins section of your slimserver
web interface), the slimscrobbler plugin will then automatically send
information to Last.fm about what kind of music you have been playing
on your squeezebox(s). At about two minutes into listening to a track
it will transmit the info to last.fm website and update your user
profile info with the data about the song.

Then in the internet radio section under last.fm you define the
stations you want to listen to with the squeezebox. You do NOT control
the last.fm feed from your PC (at least not that I can figure out, all
that happens if I run the pc client and SB at the same time is the SB
gets confused and gets no audio output).

For example, if you play the /slimscrobbler station then Last.FM will
start playing music that is associated with tags for music you have
been playing on your own squeezebox.

If you want to build an artist station then you would populate it as
such;

/artist/Hooverphonic/similarartists

Want a station for listening to rock?

/globaltags/rock

Or your own personal station that is defined from what you've listened
to in the PC Client?

/usr/your username

Your favorite (loved) tracks that you have marked while listening (if
you are a subscriber)?

/usr/your username/loved

Once you have music playing then if you arrow down in the Last.FM menu
from the Squeezebox you will see the options to love/skip/ban songs or
to change the station to any of the above. There is always an option
to change the station to a new artist station based on the artist you
are currently listening to.

Hope this helps, and I hope someone captures some of this into whatever
readme/FAQ/manual gets created for the plugin! :)

A new version of TrackStat is now available, the new functionallity is
that it is now possible to view statistics in the web interface for:
- Top rated songs
- Last played songs
- Most played songs

The statistic data used for the lists are primary based on the
statistics generated by the TrackStat plugin itself, so songs played
before the first time you installed any version of TrackStat plugin
will be last in the list until they are played the next time and
TrackStat statistics are generated.

You will find the new version at my download page as ususal.

Yes, don't use the 'official' LastFM player at the same time as the
plugin. That would get messy!

The LastFM plugin has a page in the SlimServer web interface, under
Internet Radio (or in the drop-down menu found in some skins).

This is probably a much better place to start playing with the plugin,
it's much clearer what is going on and what options you have.
