Many thanks for the continuing developments. I'm assuming it's probably
best for ordinary mortals to await the release of 2.2. I look forward to
that.
What would be really really nice would be the ability to use a custom
format string :D

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Material Skin

This is a really super skin - very sophisticated and excellent as a
mobile app. There's one thing I'm puzzled about - I've done a pretty
thorough search of this thread and I can't understand what is supposed
to display in the now playing (expanded) view. I thought, if it was a
classical genre, I would get conductor as well as composer/artist etc.
However, it never seems to appear, even though the genre is defined
under "conductor" and the tags (under more...) show that it's there.
More generally, is there any way to customise the display text for "Now
playing" - e.g. COMPOSER:TITLE, ARTIST, BAND (CONDUCTOR) - or some such?

Sorry for the shorthand. What I mean is that if I select the mic and
speaker on the AlsaMixer, it plays OK, but if I use the capture mic and
record to a file, then play back the file, it is distorted. The input
format is S16_LE (rate 44100) and I am recording to a .wav file. (I have
reduced the input level and the volume peaks at 80%)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: WaveInput for Linux

Any ideas what might be causing this problem?
I have been using WaveInput very successfully for over a year. Now the
sound is always distorted/warbling. LMS is running on a Raspberry Pi and
I have made no changes to the configuration. The warbling has always
occurred if the Pi is working too hard (CPU% >50%) but now it happens
all the time, even when the CPU is only running at 1-5%. I am using a
Pluggable USB audio card and have tested that directly through the
ALSAMixer and it is working fine - the problem is only occurring when
recording into LMS via WaveInput. All outputs from LMS are affected, not
just the Pi.
Thanks.

Context menu is fine. Full screen would be great. Just to clarify, I'm
happy with the combination of ipeng and MH's plugin now. As a classical
music lover, which i admit may be a minority, I find that quite a few
download albums (eg those from Hyperion) have PDFs attached, so this
functionality is really useful. I have also taken to scanning my ripped
cd booklets using tinyscanner and saving them as PDFs - it's quite quick
to do. My guess is that there will be more call for this feature in the
future, so any marginal improvements would be good.

Great! I hadn't spotted that possibility before. It all seems to work
provided the PDFs are in the lowest level music folder. So, where I have
a 2 disc album in separate folders, the sleevenotes need to be in one of
those folders, not the album folder that contains them.
However, I'm not sure how to get them to display in full screen on the
iPad.

You can get the PDFs fairly large by minimising the menu to icons, but
full screen would be better. The forward/back controls at the top don't
seem to work with PDF pages. Also, is there an easy way to access this
from the now playing screen or is the context menu only available from
the main screen / playlist?

I must admit I don't tend to do the second swipe right as I've clumsily
hit delete too many times (maybe more and delete should not be adjacent
like that?). Thanks for reminding me. The PDFs are perfectly sharp. The
scanned images (also saved as PDFs) are not bad either. I use
tinyscanner on the iPad.

Seconded. I have my sleevenotes as PDFs in the same album folder as the

LMS 7.9.0 Build 1434024570
ALSA native. I have a USB soundcard which is configured as "default".
Transcoding: I assume you mean the filetype setting in LMS? Only one is
offered - arecord (/flac or /lame as appropriate) if the normal .conf is
used - or ecasound (/flac or /lame as appropriate) if the ecasound .conf
is used. The only alternative is disabled. BTW: for arecord, FLAC, MP3
and PCM are offered; for ecasound the filetypes are FLAC, MP3 and WAV
(presumably relates to the .conf files below).
custom-convert.conf files are those supplied with the plugin -
reproduced below:
arecord:

#

# R

Aha! This has been an enlightening discussion. I thought LMS was
transcoding to FLAC as my understanding was that this was the default
for for all players (SB touch and squeezelite) which are set to "no
limit" in the player->audio settings. However, disabling each of the
file types in turn identified that in fact they were using the MP3
stream!

So I removed the "-x" and it works!

2.9.0

It would seem (from playing around a bit) that the transcoding to MP3 is
only happening with ecasound. Using arecord, each of the options (FLAC,
MP3, PCM) work with the other two disabled, and with FLAC being the
default if all are enabled; disabling FLAC causes PCM to be the default
(which might help to reduce stress on the Pi a bit). Presumably there is
something in the FLAC and WAV entries in the ecasound
custom-convert.conf which is preventing them from working, resulting in
MP3 being the only usable method?
I've tested ecasound with the Pi working hard and it still warbles a
bit, but less than with arecord. However, as it is (unecessarily)
transcoding to mp3, I wonder if fixing that will reduce the stress.
Thanks very much for your help in this (and for the excellent plugin).

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: WaveInput for Linux

2015-11-28 Thread MDE

Thanks for the quick response. I'm afraid I don't know exactly what info
I would need to give for a diagnosis. I have just used the ecasound
custom-convert.conf supplied with the plugin. This shows (for flac)
endian=little bps=16 sample-rate=44100. What other settings do I need to
look at? The general set-up is max2play on raspberry pi with
squeezelite, SB touches and iPeng as players. The Pi is running ALSA and
all the ALSA and ecasound commands seem to work fine when executed from
the command line. As I said, the standard custom-convert.conf (for
arecord) works without modification - just occasionally I need to
restart squeezelite as it loses the sound and also the sound has a
tremolo effect if the cpu usage is 40% or more (and the whole thing
stops after about 3.5 hours, which I remember reading somewhere relates
to the arecord buffer). Playing files over LMS does not suffer from
these problems (even at quite high cpu usage), which is why I was
wondering the different buffering in ecasound might help. Previously I
was using Butt and Icecast on a laptop to stream the line-in, but that
was proving to be a pain as the laptop is not permanently connected. I
guess I could try and install a similar "broadcast" set-up on the Pi,
but it seems like overkill and the Waveinput approach seems so much
neater.
Apologies if this is still inadequate information, but I don't know what
else is "specific" about my set-up.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: WaveInput for Linux

2015-11-28 Thread MDE

Hi. I've just installed Waveinput for Linux, having moved all my audio
processing onto a Raspberry Pi. It works (sort of) fine using the ALSA
arecord, but it does stop after a while (3.5 hours) and occasionally
stutters if the Pi is a bit busy. I'm wondering if using ecasound would
improve things. I've got ecasound working, but when I switch to the
ecasound custom-convert.conf all I get is white noise. I tested
separately the commands in the conf file and I can record and replay
OK.
Firstly, would ecasound be more robust than arecord?
Secondly, if so, what should I try to get it working with waveimput?
Many thanks.

You might also have to restart the Radio/Touch where Custom Clock runs

I set up all the title formats as suggested. I haven't tried rebooting

way of finding a piece. It would be helpful to confirm what the syntax

bach AND sonata and will filter all albums with both words appearing.
This is great 90% of the time and I prefer it to many search engines
that default to OR. However, it does not seem possible to use any
conjunctions. I think if you put in bach OR sonata it will find albums
with all 3 words.

Does the pipe symbol exist in that album's tags somewhere? It tries to

that's where its gone wrong here.

There are no pipes in my tags (confirmed by just filtering on |)

comments about Muso being the best music management software. In fact it
is the only software that properly handles classical music and makes it
a joy rather than a frustration to stream it. On top of that, one of the
most thoughtful and responsive of developers. If I had just one wish it
would be to have completely flexible mapping of all custom and standard
tags into Muso. This would enable classical music lovers to set up the
right tags for Muso to use and then to define the standard tags in such
a way that the players (such as LMS/SBT) display what is required. I
think this is on the ToDo list, but not sure how far up.

Hmm OK, I think I sorted out most things with this oddly tagged album,
but note that if it's classed as classical and Composer is present, as
it is in this example, it will never derive titled artist from the
Artist tags, which are considered secondary to Composer (even if these
are the only consistent tags across the album) - but of course you can
specify the titled artist via Album Artist tag. In the next build though
it should give correct secondary billing to the common artist however,
and produce track listings consistent with the categorisation of
 classical at the album level.

EDIT: I haven't created a new version to include this fix, it's just a
new build to the existing version 1.5.08 - so please download build 1
from the muso page and re-install over the top.

That fix seems to work.
However, here is the current head-scratch: Best practice seems to be
to only use Album Artist when strictly necessary and this works nicely
in Muso. However, if you omit Album Artist and just use Artist (being
the performer) and Composer, then the SB Touch does not display the
composer. If you omit Artist and put the performer in as Album Artist,
then the SB Touch displays the composer alongside the artist. So what is
recommended and works in Muso does not work on the SB Touch. Any
thoughts?

This is part of the reason why I think proper tagging is the most
important thing in library management. It is very nice (and

displays the music directly as tagged. This would expose every tagging
error for those of us who wish to correct them. Actually, it'd be even
better if muso could point out the tagging errors/inconsistencies while
 in this intelligence off mode.

Agreed. The other thing that it seems to indicate to me is, given that
the SB touch will not change, that Muso needs to be able to map any tag
(standard or custom) from the music file to any tag (standard or custom)
used by Muso. That way, the tagging can be set up with any necessary
peculiarities to ensure that the player works, while allowing Muso to
display the right tags. For example, a lot of classical music fans use
Album to represent a specific work or opus. This displays nicely on
the player, but in Muso you want to see the original disc as the album.
If you have a custom tag such as CDName, it would be nice to map that
to Album in Muso and to map Album to Work or Groupheader.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2013-01-20 Thread MDE

In trying to make my tagging flexible and future-proof (as if), my
approach is becoming one where custom tags hold all the component pieces
of data. Thus I can have Movement and Opus tags and then concatenate
them to produce Title. It occurs to me that the same approach should be
used for other standard tags that can cause difficulty, such as Artist.
This allows the Artist tag to be built (using mp3tag for example) from
the custom tags, including Composer. I mentioned in a previous post
that, if there is an Artist tag, the Composer does not get shown on the
SB Touch display. Concatenating artist and composer into the Artist tag
solves that problem (as does having an Album Artist and no Artist, if
the circumstances permit). The only (slight) problem with having both in
the Artist tag is that Muso then shows (in classical mode) the composer
twice (as composer and artist) - see screenshot below. Would it be a
good idea to eliminate multiple references to the same artist/composer
etc. at the same level? I don't know whether this might have unforeseen
consequences, but it would make for a cleaner view (especially if there
are other contributing performers/ ensembles etc., which there aren't in
the example given).
BTW, the two-composer attribution works perfectly for albums like this.

Just been looking at this in the new release. Composer is displayed in
the album header OK. However, (1) if the album is a classical album and
there is only one artist but several composers and no album artist, it
gets treated like a compilation whereas it should be attributed to the
sole artist as Titled Artist. Also, (2) if there is an album with only
one artist (set as Artist tag) and composer (set as Composer) and I set
the Album Artist to be the artist, then the composer does get displayed
below the header in the album view, but as Composer:
composername/artistname; in other words it is treating the artist as if
they were a composer. It should just display Composer: composername,
or maybe Composer: composername Artist: artistname if there is a
different artist to the Album Artist. I suspect this all derives from
trying to treat composers as artists for classical albums: this is a
great idea but obviously gets a bit more complex as you try and fine
tune it.
The work-round I have to (2) is to name the artist as performer and
album artist and to leave artist blank. This then displays
Composer: composername Performer: artistname The conclusion I derive
from both (1) and (2) is that with Muso as it is currently designed, if
you want a classical (performer) artist to appear as the Titled Artist,
it is best to name them as Album Artist and Performer and to leave the
Artist tag blank. Otherwise, leave Album Artist blank and name them as
Artist. This displays the artist on the SB touch either way round,
although I'm not sure that all player software does this. Whether this
is the right answer or not, I don't know. It would be nice if it was a
tad more intuitive; also, if you change your mind and remove the artist
from Album Artist, they will only appear as a performer which will not
appear on the player. Nevertheless, the main thing as far as I'm
concerned is that a logical and consistent approach is taken by Muso and
that the user is not faced with frequent re-tagging in order to optimise
the display.

There are obviously different philosophies here. Personally I think the

that the intelligent approach will prove its merits. After all, since
the way it is agreed that Muso should work is that full and accurate
tagging overrides Muso's assumptions, then everyone should be happy.

Just to show how I tag my classical albums, I'm posting 2 screenshots.
One of the actual tags (extended tags view from MP3tag) and the other of
 how it's displayed in muso.

Question for you is how do you get your group headers displayed like
 that?

OK, thanks for that, but I'm not sure why Muso replaces Composer by
Album Artist in these circumstances. Re the Groupheaders, my scheme is
as follows. Every (classical music) track has an Opus tag (which has the
full title of the work, plus the opus number). Tracks are generally
named like this: Opus: Movement. In the custom tag options (I use
LMS), Opus is mapped to Groupheader. This achieves the CD insert
appearance in the browser, and makes the SB touch display the Opus in
the title - this is necessary because I am making my album tags match
the actual albums, not the works (which I have found can get very
messy). Ideally what I would like is to customise the SB touch display,
but this seems infeasible. I should add that I am also making Movement
tags (using mp3tag actions to extract from Title) This gives me
flexibility to reconstruct Title tags in a different format if the need
arises. For similar reasons, I have CDName tags which hold the original
album name. That way I can name Album to be Opus or CDName using an
mp3tag action. Hopefully this will future-proof the tagging. Perhaps I
should consider a similar approach to Album Artist since, given the rule
you have referred to, it will be required in some cases if Album=CDName
but not if Album=Opus, however I can't see how to do this in mp3tag
since it requires the context of other tracks in the same album to
determine the result, whereas mp3tag operates on a track by track basis.
I should probably also split Opus into Work + Opus Number: this would
have the benefit of not having to use exactly the same words in the Opus
tag if I want Muso to group two versions of a work in the hierarchy.
Overall then, the approach I am leaning towards is to have custom tags
holding each significant metadata element and then automatically (in
mp3tag) constructing the standard tags in the way that optimises use by
the software I have at any time. Software may change over time, but I
don't want to re-tag again!

Can't you see it if you scroll across? - I can on my screen :) Anyway
the answer is that Ludwig van Beethoven is listed as Composer for every

he magically appears in the Muso browser screen. In other words, Muso

I've noticed a few oddities as I've been using the software more: (1)
Where the Title is set as Opus: Movement (which I do for classical
music in order to get the SB touch to display the details) and Opus is
mapped to Groupheader, then the browser looks fine - just like the CD
insert, as it strips out the Groupheader from the Title. However, the
Now Playing screen does not strip it out - it gets duplicated in that
display. (2) Where Artist, Conductor and Performer tags are used, then
if someone appears in more than one category (e.g. artist and
performer), then they get listed twice against the track in the browser.
(3) The sort order in the hierarchy doesn't always seem to work
properly. It seems to work fine for Composer, but not for Performer or
Conductor (most of them are sorted properly, but some appear
consistently out of sequence for reasons I cannot identify). For
example: Simon Rattle is shown as Rattle, Simon but is listed in the
B's!

made to the underlying music file tags, rescanned in LMS and synch'd.
After further investigation, I believe this to be a problem with LMS in
that it does not always delete changed tracks/albums from the database

LMS, rather just doing new and changed files.

sub-title where it says As Titled Artist), I really only use it in
some of my explanations because I thought it helped clarify things - but
 obviously not!

I note that the terms supporting artist and supporting contributor
are also used. These are no more real tags than titled artist. Rather
they are inferred from the context. Personally, I think that this
approach is helpful in that it enriches the data provided in the tags
and by and large succeeds. To me one of the big advantages of Muso is
this intelligent approach which is reflected elsewhere in the design.
Taken too far, this could get a bit irritating (like some big software
companies' attempts at intelligence), but I don't think that is the case
here.

 - Each time a new hierarchy is chosen it adds to an MRU (Most Recently

This is certainly a bit more intuitive than the previous right click
method. Just a small suggestion, perhaps one could right-click on an
existing hierarchy to given an option to delete it? Also, is there any
way to clear the queued music listing, since clearing the playlist in
LMS does not achieve this? Overall, the user interface is now looking
really slick. I am still struggling a bit with the metadata interface to
LMS. I appreciate that some of this, at least, may be an LMS problem,
but I'd like to stick with it as I use it from the SB touches and iPod
touch. For example, I have had a few issues getting the performer tag
to populate in Muso. This is a really useful tag for classical music as
it enables you to separate out orchestras (in the band tag) from named
artists. Band works fine in that LMS recognises it and Muso imports it
OK. Performer seems not to be recognised by LMS (still!). I have
therefore scanned it as a Custom Tag. The only way I can then get it
into Muso is to map it to soloist (BTW soloist may be a misleading
title as not all performers are necessarily soloists). This then
displays as Performer in the Muso user interface, which is a bit
inconsistent, but the right end result. Any soloist tags in the
underlying folders do not get mapped, however. I tried an alternative
approach, of importing directly from the folders, rather than syncing
with LMS. This imports data into performer, but the source is the
soloist tag not the performer tag. I suspect there is a bit of
history here and in any case people will have personal preferences for
using the performer and soloist tags. Personally, I think I will stick
with performer as it is more general, and I will move all my soloist
tags to performer, so I am happy with the way it works now (aside from
the apparent inconsistency of mapping via soloist). (BTW I want to
stick with the LMS master sync , as that does the groupheadings nicely).
In some future version, you might like to consider a more flexible
approach to tag definition and mapping; also the ability to apply
metadata changes to the underlying music files. However, I think the
software works really well as it is now, and I would suggest that the
main priority may be some better documentation. This would make it more
accessible and attractive to more users.

At one time Muso used the term Soloist I think, but for the reason you
state I changed this to Performer - does it still refer to it as
Soloist somewhere? But the file import mechanism does read any
SOLOIST/SOLOISTS (Ogg Vorbis) tags into this muso column, because I
was led to understand it was more standard. If you have PERFORMER ogg
vorbis tags instead, the custom tag mechanism from LMS should still be
able to pull this into Muso's Performer column.

I agree about the documentation, this is why I started the wiki - but it
will take some time to complete.

If you go to Options-Custom tag, then the pull-down under Track
Attribute lists soloist not performer. Changing it to performer
would remove any confusion. It seems to me that there is very little
actual standardisation in Ogg Vorbis / Flac tags, hence the suggestion
that ultimately user-defined tag naming and mapping (with a default)
might make sense.

because if the muso database is ever lost then the master data is gone
(though muso takes two backups internally, it's still possible to lose
all in the event of disk failure). By having the master data in your
tags, it's more secure (people are more likely to backup their music
externally), and easy to rebuild your muso database just as it is to
 clear and rescan LMS.

The problem I have to face with reading tags on a file scan is that I
have a tag library for reading any custom Ogg Vorbis tag (for flac/ogg
files), but the ID3 tag reader (for mp3 files) is restricted to the
standard tags so cannot currently read custom tags.

Hmm. I don't have a lot of MP3 files and they are mostly popular music,
which presents less tagging problems. Most of my library has been ripped
from my own CD's to Flac (which seems to me to be the best format for
this), rather than downloaded. There is no problem adding custom tags to
MP3 files and then scanning via LMS. A work round for someone wanting to
use custom tags directly (not via LMS) would be to convert MP3 files to
flac (eg with dBpoweramp) which of course takes 3x as much space for no
quality gain. Of course, Mp3tag both creates and reads custom tags on
mp3 files somehow.

Ah - the duplicates may have occurred because I changed folder names as
well as tags. In this case, deleting the album/tracks from Muso (only)
seems to work. However, there seems to be a related issue in that if I
edit some tags in the folder and then re-sync, the edit doesn't come
over to Muso. I have edited album tags in this way and then needed to
edit them again in Muso. Also, title tags. On the other hand, editing
(in the folder) my custom Opus tags which are mapped to groupheader
worked fine - Muso updated these. I have kept screenshots of this if
required (probably best to email separately with a description as there
are quite a few).

Since reading this comment I've been doing a bit of playing around with
Muso, but am still scratching my head. If I edit the tracks in Muso,
then only Muso seems to know about it, in other words the sync with
LMS seems to be more of an import than a sync. Furthermore, after
editing tracks/albums in Muso and performing a sync, I often get
duplicate tracks, which I have to manually edit in Muso (or make the
changes in the original files, rescan in LMS, clear the Muso database
and re-sync). Also, if I allow Muso to automatically create Group
Headers (from custom Opus tag) and then make changes to the original
folder tags, I again get duplicate tracks after sync'ing. One useful
thing that Muso has helped me do is to clarify my thoughts on tagging
conventions and to cause me to make my tagging consistent, so I am
making quite a lot of ad-hoc tag changes when I play an album that needs
tag improvements. Since I use LMS from Squeezebox Touches and an iPod
touch as well as from a Windows PC, I need to maintain the underlying
LMS db as well. So it seems to me that the only approach I can use is to
get the tagging correct in the underlying files, scan into LMS and then
synch into Muso. If this affects tracks for which Muso has already
created its own metadata, then I either have to manually delete the
duplicates or clear the database and re-sync. Maybe I am being stupid
and missing something, but if you are using Muso as the primary db, then
surely you can't be using LMS directly from any devices?

I have just been spending a bit more time getting to learn how to use
Muso. For classical music fans, it really is the best (Windows) software
I've seen. For the first time in a long time, a piece of software made
me laugh (with joy) when I discovered the group tracks feature. Having
ripped a load of CD's and used the name of the work as part of the title
of each track, this now gives me a great display of the album. In
addition, for multi-CD sets, I have now worked out how to group the CD's
into one album, so now I can see works grouped within CDs within albums.
Now the display looks just like it is on the CD insert (you would have
thought this would be an obvious requirement, but most software only
contemplates tracks within (single CD) albums!). Hurrah! So happy, I
have whizzed off my 20 Euros straight away. Just one question relating
to this: how are the track groups stored? I assume that the original
music file and LMS db are unchanged and that Muso holds some meta-data
somewhere, in which case is there a risk of losing it on clearing and
re-loading the database (I have had to do this once as it seemed to fail
to pick up some changes in the normal LMS sync)? Also, once the software
is in a reasonably mature state, perhaps a little more user
documentation would help people get the best out of it quicker?
Many thanks.

metadata if you are prone to clearing your database regularly. For me my
muso database IS my master though so I never do this - the LMS database
is secondary (I'm much more likely to clear this). However, the Group
Heading CAN be fed from any custom tag on an LMS synch, so you can adopt
the approach of defining these in your track's embedded tags,
configuring them in the LMS custom tag plugin and pulling these across
to Muso (into Group Heading). If there was a standard embedded tag ID
for this I could also read it from a file-scan, but this isn't there
 yet.

I have mapped my Opus custom tag to groupheading and that works fine,
except that, because each of my tracks is structured like this - Opus :
Movement, Muso recognises Opus as the group heading and correctly
removes it from the title, but it leaves the colon mark at the beginning
of the title (movement). If I set the groupheading within Muso rather
than mapping it , then the colon disappears and everything looks OK.
Another slight niggle is that the group heading doesn't seem to appear
in the edit tracks listing. My Opus field is listed, but some way off to
the right and there is no way I can see of re-ordering the columns.

In the case of the panes approach, I think that Foobar does it quite
well. Each filter has an all option. This means that, for example, if
I set up 3 filters: composer, opus(work), album and want a work by a
particular composer then I can see what album(s) it is on; then if I
select that album and select all works, it gives me all that
composer's works on the album; if I select all composers it gives me
everything on the album (assuming this is a compilation album). Muso
currently operates differently in that in every case the item filtered
is the album, not the collection of tracks; this is less flexible
(although arguably simpler), but it is worth noting that without this
flexibility, the full benefit of the panes approach cannot be realised.

LMS sync still working, so here are some comments on the beta version. I
think it is a great improvement for classical music lovers. Personally,
I like the hierarchical view, it does take up a lot less space than the
panel type of view and the + signs for expansion are reasonably
intuitive. It does limit you to 2 levels - whether this is an issue or
not will become apparent after a bit more usage (personally I would be
inclined to go for 3 levels). At present I use Custom Browse with
dynamic menus which effectively allows infinite levels, but I think that
this approach is overly complex. However, I am having some data/indexing
problems. For example, I have a 3 CD box set of 5 Beethoven Piano
Concertos by Alfred Brendel. The tags for this are as follows: Each
track has the opus and movement information. The album has the Composer
and opus information, e.g. Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 1 in C, Op.
15 (this is for display purposes on squeezebox touch). There are custom
tags for Opus, CDName (e.g.Beethoven:The 5 Piano Concertos [Brendel
Rattle], Disc 1), and Instrument (Piano). The genre is Concerto,
which is listed in options as a classical genre. The custom tags are
also declared in options. The tracks are stored in folders (one for
each CD) along with the cover art. Using the EditID from dbpoweramp
verifies that all the tags are consistent for every track and that the
cover art is linked to all the tracks. Using custom browse, I can drill
down by composer, genre, opus, instrument etc and consistently get to
any of the concertos, complete with cover art. Foobar works similarly
well (with the panel-style drill-down). In Muso 1.5, however, if I
select composer under the hierarchy and click on the Beethoven node,
I can see all 5 concertos shown as albums, but No.s 1-4 (Discs 1 2)
have no artwork, whereas No. 5 does have artwork. If I then drill down
by, say genre or instrument or Opus, then only No.5 appears - No.s 1-4
are not listed. If I select No.5, then the others are shown under more
by this artist. If I go to edit tracks then no data inconsistencies
are apparent, so it would seem to be something to do with how the
hierarchies are being indexed. It seems to make no difference whether I
sync with LMS or import the folders directly. Hope that is reasonably
clear, but happy to explain further or run more tests.

open up a menu to fix the second level, right-click again on the second

Thanks. I didn't spot the right-click option, but it is very neat. I'm
not completely convinced about the panels approach - it is easy to use,
but does take up much more space. The nice thing about the tree approach
is that it leaves plenty of space to display all the album information
and associated links. What is needed is just a slightly more intuitive
way of describing the required hierarchy. I'll give it a bit of thought.
Also, I think I have found the reason for the problem I had described:
it seems to be to do with whether Muso considers the album to be a full
album. In other words, albums that Muso does not consider to be full
do not appear in the hierarchy, regardless of whether or not Full
Albums is checked. By reducing the definition of full albums to, say 1
track and 10 mins, this problem goes away completely - i.e. all artwork
appears and the albums appear in the hierarchy. A lot of classical music
fans use album for each opus in order for players such as iTunes and
Squeezebox to display the information when playing; this can make for
quite short albums and multiple albums on each CD (and thus no. of
tracks in album total no. of tracks). Hope that helps.

can't think what else to try. The rest of the functionality works fine
if I import the database from the music folder - it is just the
synch'ing with the LMS database that doesn't work. It also works
completely if I set it up to use LMS on the local (laptop). Any ideas,

 http://sqlitestudio.one.pl/index.rvt

Already tried the unbinding / unlocking / restarting LMS etc. Opened the
library.db in sqlite studio (from the laptop) with no problems.

It has happened every time I have tried to test the connection - over a
period of two days. I have checked the server activity - no scanning is
happening and everything appears to be OK. The server seems to be
working fine and the music plays (having used the import file function,
rather than the Sync).

Quite a few: library.db-wal etc. Also files with .db-shm extension.

Now seems to be working - very odd as I didn't change anything. I'll
keep an eye on it and update if it fails again. Meanwhile there seem to
be some data inconsistencies arising from the sync which I am looking
into. Thanks for the help.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Disappearing custom browse menu

2011-12-09 Thread MDE

Thanks for all the help, Erland. Everything is now working again except
for the browse by selected classical dynamic menu which I set up
following the method at the end of your wiki on dynamic tags (menu
type Dynamic Tags for Song). Selecting this item from within browse
for selected gives the menu, but it appears (on SB Touch) to be empty
(even after restarts and rescans). Selecting it on the web interface
gives the song info, but no dynamic tags (and no errors).
Overall, I am very pleased with the plugins - they really help to make
Squeezebox work for classical music fans. I find it works best with the
iPeng controller (if not using the web interface). If you set up to
include composer in artists on the my music tab of the web
interface, then iPeng shows composer as the artist. Also, iPeng can be
set to play all songs when selecting the first in a list, which means,
for example, that a work (or other custom tag) can be selected to be
played as a whole. Using the Touch directly (or via remote) is less
good since it displays the song list with no method to play all of
them. Ideally, it would be nice if custom tags could be made to operate
like albums on the Touch (with play options given by hitting +).

OK, I'll try that, but now for what may seem a really stupid question.
How do I update Custom Scan from within the plugins manager? The only
way I can see of updating it is to download and unzip manually.

Updated CS to latest version and that's working fine, thanks. Still a
bit confused about how plugin updates now work - I removed the old
folder from plugins folder and then re-installed from extensions
manager. That worked, but now I don't see any CustomScan folder in
the plugins folder.

Plugins installed through SBS Settings/Plugins will be stored in

the cache folder through SBS Settings/Information page.

Plugin updates appear at the top of the page for some plugins
(noticeably iplayer, which updates regularly), but did not appear for
custom scan. Maybe this is because it was in not in the cache folder.
Now that it is in the cache folder, hopefully updates will work.
Presumably I need to do the same fix for custom browse and
multi-library (i.e remove from plugins and re-install) to get these to
show updates too?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Disappearing custom browse menu

2011-12-07 Thread MDE

I've had this problem too. I think it was resolved by doing a complete
rescan (i.e. clear and rescan from scratch).
I've just upgraded to the latest Custom versions, which have solved
some problems I had since upgrading to LMS, but I still have another
problem in that the matching custom tag menu item in my classical
dynamic menu doesn't work (and gives SQL errors in the web interface).
The menu was set up following the
Setup_dynamic_menu_to_browse_music_by_tags wiki and worked at first,
before upgrading.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Disappearing custom browse menu

2011-12-07 Thread MDE

I've managed to get the matching custom tag menu to re-appear, but only
by setting Show albums after level and Show custom tags after level
both equal to 4 (any other combination seems not to work). However
selecting the menu item does not work and I now get a slightly
different SQL error (but still ambiguous column name: module) which
is posted below. The custom tag is CDNAME, since I use Album for the
name of the work that I want to appear on the SB Touch now playing
screen (combination of composer and opus for classical music).
Error message follows, thanks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Disappearing custom browse menu

2011-12-04 Thread MDE

Today's log attached. There doesn't seem to be much there, to my
untutored eye, other than the Using an array as a reference is
deprecated. I have re-checked everything this morning and it all still
seems to be as I described - i.e. the classical music menu is present
and operating on the SB touch itself, but not on Squeezeplay, Web
interface, iPeng or Squeezbox controller, even with the SB Touch
selected as the player. It's as if the SB Touch has cached the menu
from before it disappeared. If it helps, I'm also attaching the menu
xml.
Thanks

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Disappearing custom browse menu

2011-12-04 Thread MDE

Obviously the Touch was caching - I did a hard restart and it lost the
menu too. The work-round (which is quite easy since I have the xml) is
to re-create the menu by hand and then delete the old one (moving the
xml file in and out of the folder with restarts in between had no
effect).
Very strange behaviour, but at least I have my menus back.
Thanks
