[SlimDevices: Plugins] COMPOSERSORT. How to activate?
Hi, looking for help on user a sort field. I have updated COMPOSERSORT in my music files. Thus I have tags such as COMPOSER = Alberto Ginastera COMPOSERSORT = Ginastera, Alberto COMPOSER = Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart COMPOSERSORT = Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus I have performed a full scan (Clear Library and rescan everything). I have created some menus using Erland's Custom Browse using the Composers and Dynamic Tags templates. In neither case are the menu results being sorted by COMPOSERSORT. E.g. Alberto Ginastera is at the beginning rather then with the "G"s and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is at the end rather than with the "M"s. What else do I have to do in order to get COMPOSERSORT recognised? I have read somewhere that *SORT tags are picked up automatically but this does not seem to be the case for me. I'm running SB Sever 7.5.3 and also the Custom Tags and Mixed Tags plugins to pick up a WORK tag. This is working ok (I'm not using a WORKSORT tag). I'm not sure if COMPOSERSORT is supported by standard SBS.
If it isn't, you probably need to do as follows to get it through
Custom Scan.
1. In Custom Scan/Custom Tag scanning module, make sure the fields
contains:
- Sort tag mapping: COMPOSER=COMPOSERSORT
- Tags to scan: COMPOSER
2. In Custom Scan/Mixed Tag scanning module, make sure to empty the
"Composer tags" setting.
3. Perform a rescan with Custom Scan.
This should result in that the Custom Browse based menus are sorted
according to COMPOSERSORT.

Erland, Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately they did not work. So here is some further information. WITHOUT MAKING ANY CHANGES TO CUSTOM SCAN. I think that COMPOSERSORT is being scanned by the standard SB scanner as I can see the tag (with correct values) when selecting "+ > more info > view tags" from the Duet Controller. I have tried several different custom menus to display the COMPOSER and none of them pick up the sort using COMPOSERSORT. If I create a menu using one the templates that allows a sort tag to be entered and use COMPOSERSORT the result is the same; sorting is by COMPOSER not COMPOSERSORT. SO THEN I TRIED YOUR SUGGESTIONS. I just tested it with both Flac and Mp3 files and COMPOSERSORT (TSOC in Mp3s) is not recognized. Did you wait for the Custom Scan scanning to finish ?
It starts after the standard scanner has finished, so you have to goto
Custom Scan settings page to see if it's still running.
Also, the COMPOSERSORT only affects the Custom Browse created menus, so
you won't see any difference in the standard Artists and Genres menu.
If you still doesn't get it to work, can you post the Custom Browse
configuration for a menu which contains composers but doesn't work and
I'll take a look at it.

Try creating the Custom Browse menu using the "Custom Tags Albums" menu
template instead and enter "COMPOSER" in "Tag name" parameter and leave
the "Sort tag name" parameter empty.
The "Composers" or "Artists" menu template which you have used, uses
the standard SBS scanner data and won't use data scanned with Custom
Scan, for example the COMPOSERSORT tag.

Hi Erland. Thanks for continuing to look at this. Looks like there is an issue somewhere in the scanning. Either the scanner is not saving the information correctly or perhaps it cannot read the TAGs due to format errors? Is there any way to diagnose what the scanner is doing? Any verbose messages that could be turned on? Is there a way of clearing the custom scan tables and starting again. I'm not sure that the SBS "Clear Library and rescan everything" does based on the run times of the plugins? I can create a menu using the "Custom Tags Album" template and this does display the composers sorted as I wish. E.g. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Johann Sebastian Bach Antonin Dvorak George Gershwin Franz Joseph Haydn However the list is not complete. There should be 108 composers listed but only 14 are shown. A dynamic menu does not display anything. This might be related or completely different. I have loaded your "Database Query" plugin and looked at the "Custom Scan Statistics" Only 316 songs are listed having COMPOSER or COMPOSERSORT. There should be over 1000. The "Multi Library" for "Classical Music" tells me I have 1123 songs. Nearly all of which have both COMPOSER and COMPOSERSORT tags. In fact all songs with a COMPOSER will have a COMPOSERSORT as I have used an action in MP3TAG to do this and they all display in MP3TAG. The music files in question are all FLAC by by the way. If you configure a menu in Custom Browse with the menu template "Custom
Scan Info", you will be able to browse the individual tracks and see
which tags it has picked up.
Look at the SBS Song Info page in the web interface and its "View tags"
link. If the tag show up in "View tags" but not in the "Custom Scan
Info", it would be great if you could send me such file so I can take a
look at it.

Hi, Thanks for you help. Much appreciated. I can confirm that COMPOSERSORT is now working as wanted when using "Custom Browse" "Custom Tag" menus (The ones that are added when installing the Custom Scan plug-in). As for the other issue of an apparent incomplete scan. That was a user error. Another member of the household had switched the server off and on whilst the manually scheduled scan was running. Grrr! That will teach me to leave the room. They thought it had stopped working as some of their menus had gone blank. The scheduled overnight scan has restored normality. Besides that it should be:
Tags to scan: COMPOSER
and not
Tags to scan: COMPOSERS
It looks correct to me, I'm guessing this was just a spelling error in
your forum post ?
Are you sure you have COMPOSERSORT tags in your music files ?
Do you see them if you goto the Song Info page in SBS web interface and
select the "View Tags" link ?

Sorry for the Typo, it is COMPOSER as you have guessed correctly. And yes, when I look into the details of a song with view tags, I see the COMPOSERSORT field correctly. Strange, are you sure Custom Scan completed its scanning or could you
have shutdown SBS in the middle ?
Could there be a file for the same composer that don't have a
COMPOSERSORT tag ?
If you don't get it to work you can send me a small file or upload it
somewhere where I can get it, but based on your description it sounds
like there is something else that's wrong.

Thx again Eralnd for looking into this. I have attached a small file with 2 dummy albums that represent my environment. I use the default skin for the SBS, the server running on a WHS. Music is also stored on The WHS. I have tried the custom menus on this cofiguration, it stiil won't sort the composers according to the composersort field. BTW perhaps it would be uselful to build a small test environment similar to the one I've made and publish it on the forum so everyone can test the plugin behaviour using a defined environment. I would be glad to help to do this. Your problem is caused by a bug in Custom Scan, currently it seems like
the sort tags has also to be added to the "Tags to scan" field to make
it work. So if you add COMPOSERSORT to the "Tags to scan" field it
should work correctly.
I'll correct it in the next Custom Scan release so this isn't
necessary.

Any help that makes it possible to test Custom Scan and/or Custom
Browse is greatly appreciated. There is two parts in this:
1.
Have a set of music files with various tagging and file formats. It
could be really small files to save storage space as we don't need to
be able to play them, we only want to test the scanning and browsing.
Also, it obviously can't be audio data under copyright as that wouldn't
be possible to publish without violating the copyright.
2.
Have a script or something similar that can be executed after the
scanning to verify the contents of the database or even better the
contents of the browse menus in Custom Browse. I suspect it easier test
the database contents, so it might be a good idea to start with that.
Currently I have a set of music files which I've collected from various
users but I don't have any automatic testing so this results in that
sometimes things breaks as it just did with the sorting functionality.

Thanks Erland, all works fine now.
