Hi Erland,

You might remember we had a short discussion in this thread on the
option to directly start a preselected dynamic playlist (which a user
can choose/define in the Dynamic/SQLPlaylist Web UI) when hitting the
play button in a Custom Browse menu:

-Custom Browse - Artist - Hitting Play button starts preselected
artist related dynamic playlist
-Custom Browse - Year - Hitting Play button starts preselected year
related dynamic playlist
-Custom Browse - Genre - Hitting Play button starts preselected genre
related dynamic playlist
-Custom Browse - Custom Tag - Hitting Play button starts preselected
custom tag related dynamic playlist

I think it would be possible to have a selection listbox in the menus
settings for each menu where you could configure each level if you
liked it to play by adding all tracks or if you like it to start a

I have to look at this in a bit more detail, to know how much work it
is. However, it'll have to wait some time until I have released
official versions for SqueezeCenter 7.0 and fixed some other more
 urgent problems.

I am just curious whether you managed to include this functionality in
the latest version of your plugins.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Dynamic Playlists: random playlists

Partially, I solved the problem. I disabled all plugins and enabled only
CustomScan, CustomBrwose, TrackStat, SQLlist, DynamicPlaylist. After
that I tried to play a random song playlist on the jazz genre (600
songs) in three different ways:
1. Via the standard Slimserver menu (Genre - Jazz - Play. It took 10
seconds before the first song started to play. Apart from this slow
start-up, everything worked smooth.

2. Via DynamicPlaylist. Random by Genre (created as you indicated in
one of the previous posts) - Jazz - Play. No problem at all: it took
only a second before the first song started to play. No strange
interruptions anymore...

3. Via CustomBrowse. Genre (created under CustomBrowse) - Jazz -
Play. It takes about 30 seconds before the first song starts to play.
After that the remote freezes for minutes or is hardly responsive. I
reinstalled CustomBrowse but that didn't help.

Any idea what may cause this?

I don't think Custom Browse is optimized for adding a lot of songs at

afterwards. The reason Custom Browse takes longer time is that it does
more than the standard browse menus, but I would have expected it to

Does the same problem also occur when you hit play on a artist or on

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Dynamic Playlists: random playlists

2008-01-07 Thread RoyE

I have been playing around with Dynamic Playlists for a while now.
However, I notice that after a few seconds in every song, the music
briefly holds for 1-2 seconds: it seems the system is then busy
searching for the next song to be added to the last position of the
playlist (i.e. nr. 11, 12, 13 and so on, assuming that you start with
10 songs in the playlist).

I have checked my network test: 100%. I am running SS 6.5.4 on a
FreeNas-system with 1 GB internal memory.

The only thing I can think of is the amount of tags I have for every
track: I recently added Performers, Perfomersort, Trackartist and some
more. Could this influence the speed of the system?

Are you using these tags with the Custom Scan plugin ?

Are any of these custom tags part of the dynamic playlist you use ?

Do you still have this problem if you start a simple random playlist
for example by selecting:
Dynamic Playlists/Random/Random songs

How large is your SlimServer library ? (Number of songs)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Dynamic Playlists: random playlists

2008-01-06 Thread RoyE

Erland,

Well, to put it in another way: most of the times I am just interested
in simply playing random songs within a certain genre (I have created
about 50 in my tags). In the standard Slimserver setup this is done in
just a few button clicks: Browse-Genre-Latin (for example)-Play.

For this, I am not in the specific need of Dynamic Playlists or
whatsoever. However, this straight forward way only works fine as long
as the total number of songs in the genre is somewhat limited, due to
the fact Slimserver, as programmed until now, will generate the full
playlist in advance.

The Dynamic Playlist / SQL Playlist plugin works smarter/quicker, i.e.
it generates the playlist on the run. However, working with Dynamic
Playlist in combination with Custom Browse simply means more hassle:
Browse-Genre-Latin-Play+hold-Random.

The above made me wonder why the standard Slimserver setup could not be
programmed such that it always generates playlists on the run, i.e.
without the specific need to install full featured plug-ins. (Don't get
me wrong: I admire your plugin work and I am a satisfied user of many of
them)

Additionally, I found something strange in the way my Play+hold Random
selection works. Currently I have Dynamic Playlists and SQLPlaylists
installed and enabled the four pre-programmed Random Playlists (Random
Albums, Random Artists, Random Songs, Random Years). When I press
Play+hold in a certain genre and scroll to Random, I cannot select
anything more. When I press the right arrow it will start playing a
random playlist of 20 selected songs in the genre (after 20 songs it
stops). Alternatively, when I press the Play button, it will start a
random playlist of all the songs in the genre (i.e. just the way the
standard Slimserver does it).

Does this sound familiar to you?

Play+Hold - Random in Custom Browse works as you describe, it just
plays 20 random songs within the ganre. The number of songs played can
be changed in Server Settings/Plugins/Custom Browse. This is not a
dynamic playlist, so it will not add new tracks when the 20 songs has
been played.

To accomplish something that works as you like you need to create a new
playlist with SQL Playlist plugin of the type Top rated for genre. To
be able to choose this playlist type you also needs the TrackStat
plugin installed. When creating the playlist, just change the playlist
name to Random for genre or something similar and let the rest of the
parameters be the default values. I think you need to go to the Dynamic
Playlist plugin once in the web interface after this to make sure the
new playlist is activated.

After this you should be able to:
Browse-Genre-Latin-Play+hold-Dynamic Playlist-Random for genre

I think this will work both in the Custom Browse genre menu and the
standard SlimServer genre menu.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Dynamic Playlists: random playlists

2008-01-05 Thread RoyE

Hi,

I am used to play random songs by selecting a genre and then press the
play button. With an ever growing music collection, system gets slower
and slower. The feature of Dynamic Playlists creating a limited
playlist (e.g. 10-50 songs) is therefore most welcome. However, if I am
right, the Dynamic Playlists and SQLPlaylist plugins, can only be
activated via Playlists in the main menu or via play+hold - Random
Mixer.

Is there a way to get the feature of limited playlists incorporated in
the standard Slimserver programming? If not, this could be something
for the wishlist of the next Slimserver update. If impossible: maybe
have it incorporated in Custom Browse?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean with this.

The Dynamic Playlist plugin can already today be accessed through
play+hold from the Custom Browse menus assuming you have setup
playlists in SQL Playlist that takes a parameter, for example an artist
or genre. If you push play+hold on an artist in a Custom Browse menu or
in the standard Artists browse menu in SC, you will be able to select
Dynamic Playlists and it will then show you all playlists that takes
an artist as paramter. The same thing can also be setup for genres,
albums and years.

Is this what you liked or were you thinking about something else ?

If you always want the static playlists to be played in random order
through Dynamic Playlist, there is an option in the Dynamic Playlist
section of Server Settings/Plugins called RANDOM SAVED PLAYLISTS
that does this.

In SQL Playlist you can also create a new playlist of the type Top
rated for playlist, if you have TrackStat installed. If you leave the
Minimum rating rating field empty that playlist will ask you to
select a static playlist and then play all the tracks in the static
playlist in random order. The Top rated for playlist playlist type is
currently only available if the TrackStat plugin is installed.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Dynamic Playlists: random playlists

2007-12-17 Thread wnshall

Hi,

I love how Dynamic Playlists creates just a small playlist that is
continuously updated. This is big improvement over the standard
behavior if you have lots of songs to be included in the playlist.

I have some static playlists, often with lots of tracks, that I'd like
to play via Dynamic Playlists. However, I'd also like to select songs
randomly from these static playlists. Selecting Shuffle|song doesn't
work since that just shuffles the songs in the Now Playing list and
doesn't influence what songs DP pulls from the playlist. I don't want
to just shuffle the static playlist because then I'll get the same
random sequence of songs every time I play the playlist. I tried to
use SQLplaylist to create a random songs playlist, but it doesn't seem
possible to limit the action of SQLplaylist to a static playlist (which
I can understand, since that's basically defeating the purpose of
SQLplaylist). So, is it possible to do what I want? Is there any way
to use Dynamic Playlist to pull songs randomly from a static playlist?
