Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] New version of OtherPlayers for 7.3

2010-12-28 Thread Robert57

Kuben, I have ironed all the problems now and Other Players is working
fine. I just forgot to Apply the changes I made in SBS Settings when
deleting the GrabPlaylist plug-in, so I am all good.

One other question on Other Players: when I have sent or grabbed a
playlist between two players, they seem to be effectively synced. Even
changing between MySqueezbox.com and SBS on one player causes a like
behavior in the other player, even turning the other one on if needed.
If I select Sync the other player, how do I undo this action? I do
not see how to UnSync the two players to make them completely
independent, if only intermittently. There seems to be no option to
Unsync the two in the OtherPlayers menu, after Syncing them. Does
Grabbing a playlist from another player cause a syncing ? It sure seems
to with my two players.

Thanks again.

Robert

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] New version of OtherPlayers for 7.3

2010-12-28 Thread Kuben72

That's good.

No. Grabbing or sending a playlist from or to another player does not
automatically sync them.
The syncing and unsyncing of two players happens by choosing the
syncing option in the Other Player-menu for the player. Its a menu that
toggles.

If you grab a playlist can you see in SBS that the two players are
synced?

2010-12-28 Thread Robert57

Kuben, thanks for clearing this up. I see in the settings that the two
players had somehow been set to sync--not how sure how that setting
changed. I see now how the toggle works in OtherPlayers for syncing,
and no, merely grabbing a playlist does not trigger a syncing now. This
must have been a settings miscue.

Thanks, Kuben! It works fine now. btw, is there any reason now to keep
Grab Playlist in Extras? I am not able to disable it --tried unchecking
this plugin in Settings, and restarting SBS, but this Grab keeps
reappearing, as a checked and active plugin. I don't want the Grab
persistently syncing the playlists. OtherPlayers seems to incorporate
Grab, with so much much choice and features.

Great plugin-so glad I discovered it! Thanks Max for developing this.

I am a newbie with Squeeze and have trouble installing this Other Player
plug-in, using my Mac OS 10.5.8 (and SBS 7.5.3). After downloading the
plug-in zip folder, I clicked on the installer.xml file, but nothing
happened. I'm sure I'm missing something basic--sorry if this has been
explained elsewhere. Does this plug-in work with Mac? Also curious why
this powerful and widely hailed plug-in doesn't appear in the
third-party plug-ins menu for the SBS for a simple update (like the
Grab Playlist), instead of having to manually install?

Thanks!

Hello there :)

There is one issue with otherplayers on 7.6

When you grab or send playlist they work fine at the recieving player
and you can skip forward to the next song and all.
But thre is no visible now playing playlist ? so you can not browse it
?
The current song is showing fine.
The Touch radio or controller would be just empty in the playlist.
SB3/BOOM works just fine.

Hi as you noticed they have revamped the controller UI and a lot of
functionality regarding that.
Your plugin still works from the player-UI's but not on the controller
anymore.

It's probably a little tricky as there no good description on how the
new controller UI is supposed to work.

Example squeezenetwork is not a selectable option anymore, it changes
automagically in the background somehow. Not figured out how and when as
it also is buggy.

Just a heads-up maybe 7.4 is still to buggy fot you to begin work with
adapting your plugin ?

Hi more oddity's with 7.4 .

I sent a playlist from my SqueezePlay to my SBR .

The playlist in Question was 24/96 files, then SC went into rebuffering
general slowness etc.
I kinda get it SP can do 24/96 wo transcoding when sending this to an
SBR transcoding must be fired up, then something goes awol.

But it would continue to get buffer problems (at random intervalls not
often ) after I changed SBR player to something else ? fixed after
reboot of server.

Btw transcoding flac works ok on my box, maybe some test with sending
around transcoded playlist's is a thing to do ?

Actually, patches aren't recommended at the moment. I'm currently
rewriting OtherPlayers in order to implement the previously discussed
changes and have made a lot of changes to the way the ui works under
the bonnet. The controller code may also change significantly, so it
would probably be a waste of time for anyone to write code against the
released version. I will take look at adding volume control as part of
this work, so watch this space.

I have just started using OtherPlayers and also find it invaluable.
Thanks for all your work on it.

The new functionality being discussed sounds perfect. I find it very
counterintuitive and frustrating to set up a playlist on player A and
then have to switch to player B to get it to play the same thing and
then have to switch back to Player A.

With regard to terminology, how about SYNC THIS PLAYER TO and SYNCH TO
THIS PLAYER? Is that any clearer? If there is not enough room, maybe
SYNC THIS TO and SYNCH TO THIS.

Unrelated question: Why can't OtherPlayers change volume on another
player using the Controller? For me that would be a huge plus. It is
such a pain to have to connect to another player (which takes my
controller 10-30 sec) just to change the volume in a different room.

today) But 'play music from' means you get a copy.

I don't think there is any difference between stop playing music and
just stop or turn it off if you will. But isn't that the case? I mean
apart from the fact that you may have a screensaver on a SBX and the
white light is turned off when you turn off a SBR there isn't any
significant difference between the two states. And I think thats why
there isn't any on/off button on the SBC. I know my wife and I just
press pause when we want the music to stop.

As for the word synchronization my wife didn't make the connection. And
I have experienced the same with other people I have tried explained it
to. But that may just be a danish thing :) And if those strings are in
strings.txt I can make my own translation :)

I agree you have to stick with Synchronize for consistency.

Although it may not be the most intuitive, given that Sync/Unsync are
already defined functions in SqueezeCenter, I think it would be bad
form (and only increase the level of confusion) for a plug-in to use an
alternate term/phrase for something that is already defined as a known
user function in the core application.

I think any discussion of proposing an alternative to the use of
Synchronize is beyond the scope of this plug-in and would need to
apply across the entire application for consistency.

Mikes is right. We can't change that term without the entire SC does it.
Too bad. I really don't think it is a good term.

I disagree. Plugins can call their functionality whatever they like. A plugin
can explore a different way for synchronising music, and if successful it could
end up being part of core functionality.

Sync is a bad term - I get confused every time I try to sync two players
together, and ultimately sync the wrong way causing me to play the wrong player
content. The point of the plugin is to make things easier, not copy
functionality that is already in the app.

I quite like the idea of a Sync menu, with options within that to describe the
direction of the the join. eg. Other Players Sync Join into players A
B. One more key action perhaps, but it's quicker because I don't have to think
for more than 5 secs what way the sync is going to occur, and how often does
one sync anyway.

I agree; sounds promising, and fairly comprehensive!

I agree, sounds great.

But the terminology is awkward still, I think.

The problem for me is the word Sync, which on its own does not describe
direction. I see synch as what happens when players are in a group. Setting
up synchronisation involves other action words to describe the setup process.
Sync To/With helps to disambiguate a bit, but it's still not clear. eg. SYNC
WITH could be construed as both Sync this player WITH selected player or
Sync selected player WITH this player.

So, to disambiguate, I think either different words could be found that
describes what is being selected, or include additional words to explain what
is being selected.

Perhaps:

JOIN to sync group

SUMMON/INVITE/INCLUDE player into sync group

I think it's important to mention the word 'sync' or 'synchronise'
somewhere as that is the actual SqueezeCenter action that is being
performed and that the user is (hopefully) used to. JOIN, INCLUDE etc
on their own don't really give any hint as to what they will do - they
need something to give some context. This is probably easier on the
Controller where there's more space. Perhaps one solution for all UIs
would be to add another menu level, and call that something like
Synchronise. So you'd have Other Players-Synchronise-Join AB. This
would have the added advantage of putting Synchronise as the header on
multi-line displays, adding more context to terms such as JOIN.
Disadvantage is more button presses, but it's only one. Problem is
Synchronize doesn't fit that well with 'JOIN'. Maybe it should be
'Sync Groups'?

Unfortunately, we also need to keep things short as display width is
limited and player names can be long.

I like JOIN (meaning SYNC WITH) provided there's the additional context
in there somehow. I think I prefer INCLUDE (meaning SYNC TO) out of the
other suggestions, but it's not ideal. Please keep suggestions coming!

Thanks,

Max

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] New version of OtherPlayers for 7.3

2009-01-13 Thread mikes

Max,
This sounds great!

What do you think about including an All under your SYNC TO option?
This would allow you to quickly sync all of your players to the
playlist on the current player. I think it is a pretty common use case
and a nice shortcut for those with several players.

No easy terminology here that is clear like Grab/Send Playlist.
My suggestions:
Sync by Joining / Add to Sync

or, if the first one is too long
Sync(Join) / Sync(Add)

Alternatively you could step through the process from a single
Synchronize menu where you always prompt for both FROM and TO
presenting all possible options. When you select the Synchronize menu
you would be given a list of all sync groups including the current
player A as follows:
Synchronize From:
A
B C
D

If you selected Sync From A, you would be presented with:
Synchronize From A To:
B
C
D
All

If you selected Sync From B C, you would be presented with:
Synchronize From B C To:
A
D
All

This would actually give you the option to sync two remote players
together without affecting the current player (an odd use case, but an
option).

I think either approach will achieve the goal and I am looking forward
to trying it out.

Thanks.

just what I'm looking for. Mikes idea is a very good one but I don't

the first time my wife saw it and I had to explain it to her. And I'm
not completely sure she understands it now :)

So why don't you try to express what it is you want it to do: You want
it to play the music that is playing on this player also to be played
on that player. So with mikes suggestion it would look like this:

Play music from:
A
B C
D

If you selected Play music from A, you would be presented with:
Play music from A on:
B
C
D
All

If you selected Play music from B C, you would be presented with:
Play music from B C on:
A
D

And instead of unsync you should called it Stop playing music on:

A
B
C
D

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] New version of OtherPlayers for 7.3

2009-01-12 Thread max.spicer

I've been having a think about how best to implement syncing in
OtherPlayers and, at my wife's suggestion, have decided that it would
be best to change things around a bit. At the moment, the first thing
you do is choose a player, and then choose the action you want to
perform with that player. This doesn't really work with
synchronisation, as synchronisation deals with groups of players. I
therefore think it would be better to start by choosing an action and
then go on to choose the player, or group of players. For the
non-sync-related options, this change should have little effect - the
number of selections to, for example, grab a playlist would be the same
- Grab Playlist - Player 1, as opposed to Player 1 - Grab Playlist.

Having made this change, I then propose to remove the current Sync
option and replace it with three new options. I can't think of good
names for these options at the moment, so I'm going to call them Sync
To, Sync With and Unsync for now. So, you would have Grab Playlist,
Send Playlist, Power, Volume, Sync With, Sync To and Unsync.

Sync With will list all the current groups of synchronised players,
excluding any that the current player is already synced with. It will
implement a sync where the current player joins the selected sync
group. This means it will start playing what the other player(s) are
playing. For example, if the current player is A, you could see BC,
D, EF. Chosing to Sync With BC would give you ABC, chosing to Sync
With D would give AD. If the current player is already synced with
other players, that synchronisation will first be stopped. For
example, if the current player is A, and A is synced with D, chosing to
Sync With BC would end up with ABC with D on its own.

Sync To will implement a sync in the opposite direction to Sync With -
the selected player will be added to the current player's sync group
and will play what the current player is playing. If the selected
player is already synced to other players, that synchronisation will
first be stopped. As a result, if you chose Sync To you will only see
individual players listed, not sync groups. If A is the current player
and is currently synced to BC, choosing to Sync To D will result in
ABCD. If D was previously synced to E, you'd go from ABC and DE
to ABCD and E.

Finally, Unsync will offer an option to cancel synchronisation with any
other player. There will be an 'Unsync From All' option, and the option
to remove individual players from the current sync group: 'Release'. So
if A is currently synced to BCD, you'd have Unsync From All, Release
B, Release C. Again, I need better words.

Some examples - the current player is always A. Initially, AB are
synced together and so are CD. Each of the examples follows on from
the previous one.

Initial state: AB and CD
Sync With CD - drops sync with B, giving ACD and B
Sync With B - drops sync with CD, giving AB and CD
Sync To C - breaks sync between CD and syncs with C, giving ABC and
D
Sync To D - adds D, giving ABCD
Release B - gives ACD and B
Release D - gives AC and B and D
Sync With B - drops sync with C, giving AB and C and D
Sync To C - adds C, giving ABC and D
Unsync from all - gives A, BC and D

That's a lot to follow, but I hope it makes sense. I think the actual
UI should be much easier to understand, but it does need better
wording. What do people think?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] New version of OtherPlayers for 7.3

2009-01-12 Thread Brian Ritchie

I agree; sounds promising, and fairly comprehensive!

Terminology is harder. For me, sync with has always been too
ambiguous, though I'm coming round to thinking of A sync-with B to
mean that A should pick up whatever B is playing. I suppose that if you
have A sync-to B (where B picks up A's playlist), then the other
direction could be A sync-from B; but sync with is 7.3's
nomenclature. I like the word release, though I guess unsyc B
(without the from) is probably clear enough. Heh, the opposite of
release could be imprison or even enslave (the latter would make
it clear that A is the master!)

So, if I'm listening to A, and want to sync what it's playing to both B
and C, then with the Controller on A, would I do something like this:

OtherPlayers - SyncTo - B -
- [to SyncTo player list] C -

(Using - and - for left/right arrows, followed by scrolls)? I
think that'd make sync'ing with multiple players pretty easy (perhaps
only choosing a Synchronizer pre-prepared sync group would be simpler).
(Probably don't even need that left arrow, if going right to select B
doesn't actually leave the list of players.)

clear the cache? I'm afraid I don't know enough about how
ExtensionDownloader works to offer more advice.

I don't normally distribute my .svn directory - I must have forgotten

I've just tried sending a playlist to an off player with every possible

state i.e. the player I was sending to turned on and immediately
started playing. This was with 7.3. Could you try and get me a simple

trying 7.4.

Agreed. I'll add both options, with appropriate wording. I should
probably also have a think about sync groups. I'll post a new version

I'm running 7.4 on XP (latest from the nightlies posted on the web
rather than svn). I can send a playlist to an off player with no
problems using the updated OtherPlayers.

I have Power On Resume set to Stop at Power Off/remain stopped at Power
On. Happy to grab a log for you.

Tried it just now: with Living Room unsync'd (which may or may not have
left Kitchen + Upstairs sync'd) and playing, tried Synchronizer / Sync
all to Living Room, whilst watching Kitchen. Nothing happened - Kitchen
and Upstairs remained silent. Nor did either of my pre-cooked groups
(both with LR as master) work. The built-in Sync i/f shows Living Room
is still unsync'd (and no sign of a Kichen / Upstairs sync group).

I'm not in a position to try anything else right now (actually
listening to music!) but my previous experiences are that even pausing
the master doesn't work, it has to be Stopped. Until now, I assumed
that's just the way it was. So there's hope!

I have SyncOptions on, with mid-track sync set. Wonder if that could be
interfering somehow?

Which version of SC and The Synchronizer?

Try turning mid-track sync off, especially if you're on 7.3. I seem to
remember something about having bad interactions between SyncOptions and
the Synchronizer. 7.3.x really has the mid-track sync by default, but
you'll need the latest version of The Synchronizer to go with it.

I always get confused with Syncing, whether using this plugin or SC's default
sync option. I can never remember if the playlist on this player or the player
that I pick to sync with will be the one that continues. Half the time I get
it wrong and sync the wrong way round.

It would be nice to have options to Join A to B or Join B to A. Not sure
what the wording should be, but somehow be clear what direction the syncing is

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] New version of OtherPlayers for 7.3

2009-01-06 Thread Mnyb

Ah ok the default setting for power on resume is .. remained paused at
power on.

which means that the playlist moves to the assigned player, but it wont
start to play you have to press play on that player, which also means
that you have to choose another player to do that.

The workaround is to set power on resume to ... resume at power on.

This makes the play list to immediately start playing on that player.
and you can start and stop playback at that player with your on/off
setting,
without the need to choose another player.

What i mean if you ad play/pause to the interface you can have both
options at the same time.
You can send play lists that wont start immediately and have a way to
start stop playback without choosing another player in the interface.

I'm pretty sure it used to work that way. I'd prefer to have it do
that by default. There could maybe be an option to control that
default behaviour.

Aside from that, I'm not yet convinced of the need to have a separate
play/pause option. I think Dean has succeeded in drilling into me the
mantra that more options is bad and simple is good. ;-)

Not me either actually, when thinking about it ? where to stop volume
etc ?

if you have your power on resume setting as I explained it does work,
wonderfully so.
But some of the settings breaks the intended behaviour.
Probably all that sets the player in pause something when it is powered
on.
The funny thing is that the player IS actually on, so sending another
on command seems to pause it, when the wrong power on resume choice
is made ?

Maybe there is no problem if you know this, or the plugin could be made
to start playback regardless of this player setting.

I'll take a look. The plugin currently sends a play command after
transferring the playlist and also checks that the player is on. It
could be that one command is cancelling out another. I probably just
need to check if the player is playing and tell it to play if not.

of? (I have to admit to not being sure which was A/B in your
 description).

I'll try... I'm listening to player A, and not surprisingly that's the
currently-chosen player on the Controller. I decide that I'd like to
play the same thing on players B and C (ideally without interrupting
the music on A). So I try what worked under 7.2. I go to Other
Players, choose B, then Sync with B. But now, A stops playing (or
starts playing whatever B was playing), because sync now runs in the
other direction. Player A now has acquired B's playlist. If I now go
back to Other Players, choose C and then Sync with C, a now acquires
C's playlist; and (crucially) sync between A and B is broken, so I
can't even try to recreate A's old playlist on A, B and C, because
they're still not all sync'd.

Presumably, to get A synced as master with both B and C (I hope my
language is clear here), I have to choose one of B or C first. This is
bad enough, as switching between players on the Controller is pretty
slow (at least, it's always been that way for me); this was what I
loved about Other Players before 7.3. If, as I fear, I have to visit
all three, then that's just too tedious for words. (I say if,
because I've never tried to sync all three this way.) Might as well
just stop A (perhaps waiting for the current track to end), and use The
Synchroniser.

(Incidentally, right now my three players are sync'd; but with the
controller looking at Living Room (which should be the master, but see
later), Other Players shows it as sync'd with Upstairs, but not with
Kitchen. I guess there's an explanation along the lines of mumble
mumble sync groups, but I can't be bothered to figure it out. Just to
complete my day: though Living Room has Crossfade set (according to the
controller), it ain't happening. Am I really going to have to turn it
on for every player? Please, no!)

I do use grab/send playlist occasionally, but really do need sync most
of the time as I can hear more than one player from many parts of the
house.

I've just uploaded a new version to my repository. This should
hopefully fix grab/send playlist and also fixes some errors in the
Swedish translation.

I forgot to add that maxVersion for this plugin has now been set to
7.*, so it will also install on SqueezeCenter 7.4 and higher. However,
this plugin has not been tested on 7.4 - your mileage may vary! Please
post any problems in this thread.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] New version of OtherPlayers for 7.3

2009-01-05 Thread Brian Ritchie

Max,

I was really pleased to see this appear for 7.3; I was hoping it would
be an improvement on how tedious it is to sync three or more players
together in 7.3. Unfortunately, the behaviour of sync A with B has
changed: it now cancels any previous sync from A, and loads B's
playlist into A. This is pretty much the opposite of what happened in
7.2, but it's in line with 7.3, I grudgingly admit.

So it's still not possible to sync 2 players together without having
to switch players. (Well, there's The Synchronizer, but it seems to
require the master (at least) to be stopped.)

I wonder how easy it would be to subvert the new 7.3 behaviour in order
to provide the old behaviour?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] New version of OtherPlayers for 7.3

2009-01-04 Thread coppo23

OP has been one of may favourite plugins and I have eagerly awaited the
7.3.x version of it.

Have installed OP 0.5.1 on 7.3.1 SC using the ED. Tranquil WHS.

It appears in all the correct places in the menus and things like
switch on/off other players works - but grab/send playlists just does
nothing. This exhibits the same behaviour as the previous version which
stopped working when I went to 7.3.0.

Any ideas as to what may be wrong or what I might try next.

Cheers

It appears that the grab playlist bit is broken - sorry about that. It
will almost certainly be a simple fix - I'll try and get a new version
out in the next couple of days.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] New version of OtherPlayers for 7.3

2009-01-03 Thread max.spicer

I've updated my OtherPlayers plugin to add support for SqueezeCenter
7.3. I've also added a Swedish translation, courtesy of Sören Öman.

This plugin provides a new menu on your Squeezebox/Squeezebox
Controller, called Other Players. It lets you select any of the other
players that are connected to your SqueezeCenter server and provides
ways of controlling them. You can currently do the following:

* Transfer the playlist from the other player to your current
player (Grab Playlist)
* Transfer the playlist from your current player to the other
player (Send Playlist)
* Turn on/off the other player
* Adjust the volume on the other player (not on Squeezebox
Controller)
* Sync/unsync with the other player

The new plugin should be installed via the Extension Downloader from my
repository at http://thespicers.net/slim/repo.xml. For further
information, see http://thespicers.net/otherPlayers.html.

Apologies for the delay in updating this plugin.

Why not also publicise the zip file for manual download/install? Some people
can't/don't want to install via ED. eg. a server that is not directly
connected to the internet. Most people provide both installation mechanisms.

Good point. I'll add that to the web page, but for now it's

Bear with me - I didn't even know about the new Extension Downloader
until this afternoon.

Sure, no problem.

The issue for some is that the latest beta version is SC 7.4, which is likely
to be compatible with 7.3 (at least at the moment), but they won't be able to
see the plugin in Extension Downloader, because you have set maxVersion to
7.3+. As it can't be downloaded/installed, they can't modify the maxVersion to
get it to run.

However, if manually download, they can at least tweak/remove the maxVersion
check.
