[SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng Playback + iPad + headphones

2022-02-16 Thread whitman

I'm thinking of getting some headphones to use for LMS, and I'm looking
into iPeng's Playback facility to do this. (This is the iPeng add-on
that effectively turns an iPhone or iPad into an LMS/Squeezebox
player.)

The iPad I'd use is a mini 4. I believe the out from iPeng through the
headphone jack on that would be good enough to make for a reasonably
high quality noise. Correct?

I'm considering the well-rated Grado SR80x cans, which have an impedance
of about 35 ohms. I'm assuming they're OK for the iPad to drive without
assistance as I have a cheap pair of about 32 ohms that seem OK through
that route.

Anyone using a similar setup with advice or comments?

(Wasn't sure exactly where to post this, but figured iPeng = software
probably closest.)

Depends what you mean by “good enough”. Should work ok but you’ll get
better audio by using a Lightning to USB cable (Apple Camera Converter)
and an Audioquest Dragonfly. I used to use this config with my B&W P7s.

iPeng via the Dragonfly supports up to 24/96.

I have also used other portable USB DACs but some aren’t loud
enough/wouldn’t drive the headphones.

Jim, thanks for that.

Quick glance at Amazon shows variable prices for what looks like
different colours of the Audioquest Dragonfly—90 quid for black,
200 for red, etc.

I presume there are technical differences?

Yes but black will be more than good enough. If you are in UK which I
think you are I’d say get the Lightning USB cable then take your iPad,
cable and headphones to Richer Sounds and test the Dragonfly before you
buy. If it works to your satisfaction with the native iOS music app and
some music you know well then it will also work with iPeng.
Just check that Richer Sounds have some in stock.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng Playback + iPad + headphones

2022-02-16 Thread d6jg

I did say earlier that “I used to use this config with iPeng” on my
iPhone.

What I use now is a Pi Zero Velcro’d to a Powerbank with the Audioquest
Dragonfly but controlled by Material on my iPhone.
Why did I move away from iPeng on the iPhone?
1. Crossfade. IPeng doesn’t support it.
2. iPeng/iOS is limited to 24/96. If I ever upgrade the Dragonfly to one
of the colours that supports higher than 24/96 I would never see the
benefit.
3. I was using iPeng solely as the player but using Material on the same
iOS device to control it.
4. Interference (sounds) and phone calls interrupting my listening.

No. SB3 has no USB out.
Try iPeng with an Audioquest first.

So, can you use Material Skin as a player on the device it's running on?
In the same way as you can use iPeng's Playback function?

No - Material skin does not include a player.
It could be used to control a player on the same system (via LMS) ...
just like it can control any other players.

As a native LMS player using SlimProto ... I think it is unique.
However, you could use a different sort of player.
For example - something that can play a SHOUTcast stream (an "internet
radio" app that allows you to enter a stream URL of your own choice)
could access the stream.mp3 stream from LMS.
A UPnP Renderer could also access LMS via UPnP protocols (via LMS
plugin).

This is of course correct but the SQ is poor by the stream.mp3 route and
UPnP is a dogs dinner (and not a very nice one at that).
I used to use iPeng as the player on my iPhone but controlled it with
Material on same iPhone.
As far as native players on iOS go iPeng is the best option. There is
nothing wrong with iPeng's control interface it was just that I use
Material everywhere else.
To the OP - stick with your iPeng plan - its only a few £ to activate
player mode.

2022-02-18 Thread whitman

Thanks Paul and Jim for further advice.

Still thinking my way through, as for me this counts as a potentially
big investment, so I want to consider as many alternatives as poss.

So, I do have an M! MacBook Air (2020). I imagine using that would
eliminate the need for the camera adapter for the iPad. I have a spare
USB3–USB adaptor I could use on one of the laptop's Thunderbolt/USB4
jacks. Presumably a Dragonfly DAC would work connected to that?

I do have iPeng working on the laptop—it's an M1 version, and most
iOS/iPadOS apps work on it—so that side of it is covered.

Mind you, despite all that, I wonder how good the laptop's internal DAC
is, via the 3.5 headphone out?

I would imagine that the internal DAC in an M1 Macbook is OK but I would
also imagine that you will see (hear) an improvement with a decent USB
DAC such as the Dragonfly. It should work with a Macbook with a suitable
adaptor but again I'd say take the Macbook, adaptor and headphones to
Richer Sounds to make sure. There are cheaper USB DACs available but the
Dragonfly is very highly rated in Audiophile circles.

My response was for the iPad idea - iOS/iPadOS.

There has been recent discussion about running Unix Squeezebox stuff on
iOS via an emulation layer which might lead somewhere.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng Playback + iPad + headphones

2022-02-21 Thread Grebg

Hi, I use exactly this setup daily (IPeng + dongle dac). It's very good
and you should try this.
Few additional comments:
- IPeng playback doesn't recompress anything (it's more of less
bitperfect up to 96khz) and the player is quite good compared to other
"audiophile" iOS music app
- I found old iOS devices (my old iPhone 7) to struggle a bit with
battery consumption. No problem on more recent devices (iPhone 12 and
iPad)
- IPeng EQ is very good if you're into that (Let's say you found a
dedicated EQ calibrated for the specific headphone you're targeting)
- If you have good internet and a VPN connection between your phone and
your server (like WireGuard) it works quite well to stream your music on
the go. I do this almost every day.
- There's literally tons of "dongle dac" nowadays, some cheaper and some
more expensive than Dragonfly. Some require specific USB camera adapter,
some don't. If you're not sure yet and your headphone is easy enough to
drive you should start without this. The headphone itself will define
90% of the sounds, a dac will later help you to reach the last 10%
remaining.

Grebg, thanks for this, very good to hear of your experience.

Have you ever tried iPeng on MacOS? M1 Macs will run some iOS apps, and
my laptop will run iPeng, though it seems to crash with some streams
(but not others).

Anyway, my iPhone SE (2016) seems OK on battery usage with iPeng, as
does my iPad mini 4.

I can't see an obvious way to tell what actual quality (96/24 or
whatever) iPeng is shoving out the headphone jack at any point.

Good advice on trying the cans without a DAC for now, thanks, and I like
your suggestion of the 90 vs 10 balance. My new Grado SR80X arrived
yesterday, so I've been digging in. Much fun!

What DACs have you tried and liked? The miser in me would be interested
in less expensive ones!

Chiming in again.
iPeng with a dongle DAC will go to 24/96 but I’m not sure whether the
onboard DAC goes beyond 24/48.
The Dragonfly has an LED that changes colour based on the stream bit
depth. If I listen via it - it will mostly be green (16/44.1 local FLAC)
but will change to purple (24/96 Qobuz FLAC).
I also have experience of some other dongle DACs eg HiFiMe DIY Sabre
which are much cheaper. These don’t have as much volume which is an
issue with an iOS device but they can be boosted when used with a Pi
using Alsamixer. No LED though.
