Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Tidal stutter using LMS

2022-01-23 Thread Redrum

Persistent mode did not solve my stuttering problem, Tidal on a receiver
(plays on a touch fine). Doesn't happen that frequently, maybe 10% of
the time.

Back to the transcode on LMS, can we revisit which settings to
alter?...

...or, I can just live with it, skipping to the next selection or a
different album usually resolves it.

Yes. The problem I had would happen with the CORE32 based LMS (i.e. NXP
i.MX6 ARM processor, 512Mb memory, custom RTOS PolyCORE) but not an
Ubuntu LMS (i.e. iCore7 processor, 16Gb RAM). So I think memory
allocated to network buffering is part of my issue.

@bpa, I played this track in persistent with a receiver synced with a
touch. No issues. I then turned persistent to "normal", restarted LMS,
and played the track again, and again it was fine.

I think you are right that we experienced different abnormalities. Sorry
I could not be of any help replicating yours. Regarding mine, I think I
will leave my streaming in "normal" and see if I experience mine on a
specific song/album/sitation, see if I can replicate it, then switch to
persistent and see if it resolves.

I'm pretty sure it NOT hearing the same symptoms. The symptoms I heard

1. Somewhere mid track (usually after 5 mins) - player will skip to
next track.
2. Skip a chunk in the middle of a track but not replaced by silence -
as if a chunk of music was lost.
3. At end of track usually between last 45-15 secs - silence but time
clock counts down at x secs to go, then at zero resets back to x secs to
go and counts down again & again. With this issues, occasionally player
may eventually progress to next track.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I am on Hifi "Plus" Trial.

I'll try this track later this morning. I am wondering if we are hearing
the same thing. I can't recall exact tracks, but I have heard stutter on
shorter tracks (say under 5min). What I have heard can start immediately
in the beginning of a song.

Having said all that, running persistent for about 3 hours yesterday -
no problem. Since if was a Tidal assembled "playlist" it was all
different media.

No. 2nd item in playlist "Classical at the movies" under
Genres/Classical. Also on Hifi Trial so no access to MQA.

I think the main issue is the duration - it is 17 mins long. "Persistent
Mode" solves similar problems for users with podcast (i.e. long
continuous track).
A secondary issue is probably encoding - which also affects the memory
required for buffering (these are TCP/network buffers). I had problem
often shortly after 5mins - perhaps with m4a track it might happen at
10-15mins. If that is the case probably a track longer than 25 mins
would be needed.

If so, I try later this morning, both normal and persistent (receiver
and touch on pcP). To be clear, I am on a "HiFi" trial in case that's
relevant.

I wondered if this was related to tracks that are "Masters" (MQA - up to
24/96) but I believe I have played quite of few of these selections with
no problems

Repeated test this morning. The Rhapsody in Blue track consistently had
problems on DAC32 using LMS on CORE32, no problem with DAC32 with LMS on
Ubuntu - LMS 8.2.1 version. Problems often started after about 5 min.

No problems on CORE32 after Settings/Network/Streaming mode for HTTP(S)
set to "Persistent Mode"

Test of Muse & receiver with 8.2.1 on Ubuntu - no problems.

So my issue is probably not compression.

My problem track is 17min long which perhaps "forces" the problem on my
smaller CORE32 system which short track avoid. I'll retest tomorrow to
see if issue is reproducible as it was this evening.

I've just been testing Tidal Flac with new Muse speaker on an CORE32
8.2.0 system (default File Types settings) and I got jumps and other
issues with a track (Rhapsody in Blue 17min). Jumps and funny silent
loop 45 sec before end. Problems were reproducible (i.e. no clean
playback of track) and so I tested with Receiver and Squeezeamp - same
sort of problems.

Then tested with recent 8.3.0 on Ubuntu - same track - no issue with
Receiver or Muse. If the issues was only compression, this shouldn't be
the case.

I'll try to test with 8.2.* on Ubuntu.

If this is that compression problem, it is totally media dependent and
some have been, for no reason, compressed using high ratio which uses
blocking methods that are probably not implemented on older players.

Yes they are (Tidal -> FLAC).

I was surprised when "persistent" was suggested (thank you again btw),
because the previous posts in this thread inferred the issue was the
inability of the receiver, et all, to handle the transcoding, so having
LMS do it was the answer.

Having said that, I have streamed tidal for a few hours in persistent
and the receiver has not stuttered. But, it didn't happen all the time
anyhow...it seemed it could be media dependent.

Oh, that could be true, too... See

TIDAL, not WiMP.

TIDAL actually was the first of the "official" services to support FLAC.

I'm not sure exactly what Michael is referring to here. I don't use
Tidal, don't use a custom_convert, and use the default settings on
filetype. But perhaps the answer is in the LMS > Settings > Advanced >
Filetypes, the user would set FLAC to "disabled" instead of "native" and
PCM to disabled. Not sure, but if that causes any issues, just set
them back to FLAC > native and PCM > FLAC. You won't break anything
trying. See picture.(other thoughts are useful from someone more
knowledgeable about this).

Sorry to bump this. I am having tidal stuttering on a receiver, touches
play fine. I am assuming that I have to change a setting in LMS (per one
of Michael's previous posts), and am guessing that it's on
settings->advanced->file types, but I am unclear what the change? There
are alot of buttons and knobs on this page.

I read a variety of posts in two threads on this and hope someone can
summarize a solution.

I am new to Tidal, trying a tidal hi-fi+ trial. I am running 8.2.0 -
1627922070

I have been running a few tidal "mixes" on a touch synced with a
receiver. Occasionally a song song will stutter, primarily on the
receiver, but the sync might trip up the touch a bit. It's the typical
strawberry jam on the CD sound.

my current solution is just to skip to the next track.

Best way to address? Saying "ditch the receiver" is an acceptable
solution :) Perhaps the fix is in 8+ but it a setting I have to tweak?

won't change quality. The file was always being converted to PCM to
play, it is just now it is being converted to PCM at the server side
rather than the player side.

Could someone walk me through inserting a custom conf file in the
appropriate place to solve this for me.

The latest LMS8 should have the necessary changes which would allow you
to transcode to PCM.

CJS wrote:
> Are you playing Tidal AAC streams?

I'm playing FLAC (I think) as I have a TIDAL HiFi account. Not all
TIDAL content exhibits this problem, just some. The stuttering seems to
happen at the same places(s) in the affected tracks on each play. For
example at the start of My Own Soul's Warning by The Killers. This shows
as 1059kbps 44.1kHz, FLAC. While the stuttering is happening, the LMS
Server (an HP Microserver) shows less than 10% CPU usage.

I have tried with wifi and wired connection to both the Booms and the
Duet with the same results. The Pi plays great just using its on board
wifi.

I have tried the custom-convert.conf mod using sox (although I'm not
exactly sure what that does) and that fixes the stuttering, but I can't
use that because it stops me from being able to fast forward within
tracks.

Are you playing Tidal AAC streams? Reason for asking is that the Boom
and AFAIK also the Duet cannot play AAC streams natively, while
piCorePlayer 6.1.0 can. When playing Tidal AAC streams on the Booms and
the Duet, transcoding from AAC to FLAC (or MP3) is done on LMS, while
pCP does not need transcoding. So the stutter that you experience with
Booms and Duet may have something to do with the transcoding. Possible
explanations may be that the hardware on which LMS runs is not powerfull
enough, or that the bandwidth of the Wifi connection is not sufficient
for reliable streaming of FLAC streams.

have 3 Booms and a Duet, and all had the same problem with some tracks.

I recently set up a Raspberry Pi with PiCorePlayer 6.1.0 and a HiFiBerry
Dac+ Pro to see if that made any difference and lo and behold the tracks
that stutter when playing on the Booms/Duet do not stutter on the Pi.

You can add an "I" to have both LOCAL/TIDAL working (TIDAL from STDIN).

*Caveat*: LOCAL will allow "search", but Tidal won't.

Could you please try with the very latest LMS8 nightly build?

The logs say something about "wimp://" so these mechanics should go
somewhere else.

WiMP (yes!) was the music service developed in Norway before it got a
new American management, which decided to rename it to TIDAL before
going international, for obvious reasons :-)

You can add an "I" to have both LOCAL/TIDAL working (TIDAL from STDIN).

*Caveat*: LOCAL will allow "search", but Tidal won't.

As in:

Code:

flc flc * *
  # IFT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}
  [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ -

Not sure what's being done behind the curtain.
STDIN would imply that someone else orders the "search/skip" from Tidal,
and [flac]/[sox] break because STDIN is killed.

But who?
The logs say something about "wimp://" so these mechanics should go
somewhere else.

Thanks for the workaround to re-encode the flac files, that worked well
and eleminated the stuttering for me :)

There is just one side effect, I wasn't able to play a subsection of a
flac file anymore.
In my use case this means I have single flac files that contains a
complete album or livesets. Additional files with cue sheets are used to
navigate to each song individually. With the above fix I wasn't able to
play a specific song anymore, instead squeezebox server stopped playing
and I got bored with silence.

So I have adopted the re-encoding fix to allow playing of subsections
again:

Code:

  flc flc * *
  # FT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}
  [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ -

As sox isn't able to cut out subsections of a file this fix uses flac
itself to re-encode the data.
I didn't measure if flac might costs more CPU cycles compared to sox ;)

have phun

Try to write the code line in notepad++ . NOT copy paste. As I

I don't think there is a library. The custom-convert.conf file is only
meant to contain changes from convert.conf file.

I don't know Max2Play so maybe it is related to this, since it don't

As you are on a Linux OS, I will recommend using notepad++ and use these

Here what Paul wrote to me:

Thanks for your answer! I tried the Proxy options already but for the

2020-01-25 Thread daniellj

I'm also having this issue with stuttering and jittering sound from
Tidal, but going through mysqueezebox.com (using FLAC). It appears only
with newer albums or tracks, and I first noticed the problem sometime
beginning of 2019. Strangely enough it does not happen with all tracks
from newer albums - sometimes it is hardly noticable and sometimes
tracks will just stutter really badly. It's happening a lot more
frequently with new albums. Will I need to give up my squeeebox? Can we
expect Tidal to survive in squeezebox, or is it simply passing due date
slowly with Tidals updates to their encoding...??

Is anyone looking into this? Anyone knows what is going on?

It seems I have the same issue with Qobuz on some of my Players - Radio
and Boom, with suttering and rebuffering (see
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?111474-Qobuz-Dropouts=961183=1#post961183).
I would like to try the custom-config solution but how do I proceed?
Where is this config file located?

Thx for the help ;-)

Many thanks to both of you. I've created a custom-convert.conf file
containing the text suggested by callesoroe. That has solved the
problem.

If you edit convert.conf file then any changes in the file will be lost
after LMS update whereas custom-convert.conf will be kept after an LMS
update.

I had that issue too. I am using Tidal with LMS. It seems like some
tracks after about March 2019 is getting compressed at to high level.
Many squeezebox devices don't like that, and make stuttering sound. I
fixed this using SOX to transcode.
Make a custom-convert.conf file containing this:

flc flc * *
[sox] -q -t flac $FILE$ -t flac -

That solved the problem for me.

Not buffering. The music jitters and judders as if it's having
difficulty with peaks of volume or frequency. My impression is that
TIDAL is trying to send lots of data some of which is being choked off.
