Re: Dumb Monroe question
... Del McCoury co. do "Get Down On Your Knees and Pray," but it wasn't until seeing it on McCoury's new album that I learned it to be a Bill Monroe song. D'oh. I've heard quite a few, but nowhere even close to all, of Monroe's recordings. Can anyone please suggest where I might find his version of the song? It does appear on "Bill Monroe - Bluegrass 1950-1958". It's a Bear Family compilation (pretty pricey), 4 disc set. If you just want to hear the song, maybe you could find this set at your library (?). I don't know where else it appears on previous records, discs, etc; Tera

Re: Poor Paul Westerberg
Tommy Stinson recorded an EP and a never-to-be-released album with his own band, Perfect; now, he is paying the rent with Guns N' Roses, and the mind reels at the implications. . . . but this frightens me. Is this true? Yes, veeery true. Tommy decided it was okay to have a gig for once in his life that can allow him to sock some money away for his daughter. I suspect it's also something to do the relieve the frustration of getting dicked over by his label with Perfect, who pulled the plug on their very fine album in the eleventh hour last summer. Poor Paul Westerberg. He spent his time in the Mats cracking jokes, and everyone took him seriously. Now, he spends his time taking himself seriously, and everyone thinks he's a joke. Lance . . . Well, I for one think Suicaine Gratifaction is often quite moving. Finally Westerberg gives up trying to recreate what once was and has settled in with some middle-aged poignancy. That's okay by me. Besides, when he hits those right vocal notes, as he does often enough on the new album, it reminds me that no one, not even that Farrar fellow, can penetrate my soul like he can. Tireless defender, even if Hockeystick will disagree, Neal Weiss
Mavis Staples/Bob Dylan
I think I just probably came off the best two nights of back-to-back music in my entire life: Friday - I made the last minute decision to drive two hours from St. Louis to see Bob Dylan at SIU-Carbondale. The Brian Setzer Orchestra opened up and were very entertaining. The predominantly college crowd of approximately 7,000-8,000 people were obviously there to see Dylan however. I've seen Dylan probably around 15 times dating back to 1977. In that time I've seen some awful shows. This show is the best I've ever heard Dylan. His voice sounded the best I've heard in a long, long time and he and his band were playing like they were flat-out inspired. It was interesting to see the majority of college kids going nuts, the older fans who have kept in touch with Dylan's music over the years enjoying the new songs, and the minority of older people there to see Dylan play his old songs completely at a loss to why he performs a number of his songs so differently than the recorded versions. He played five songs from "Time Out Of Mind", covers including "Rank Strangers" and "Not Fade Away", and a few songs I've never heard him perform live before such as "My Back Pages." It's fascinating to me how much he reinvents his music and keeps it relevant today (Rolling Stones take note). I believe it was Dan Bentele who questioned the relevance of "The Time's They Are A Changing" a few days back. Dylan skipped that song on Friday but played "Blowing In The Wind" instead. This should have sounded like an old tired warhorse but it was done completely different and was truly an amazing thing to behold. In a time where NYPD officers find it necessary to fire over 40 shots at an unarmed man and we're involved in skirmishes left and right, the lyrics to "Blowing In The Wind" sounded VERY relevant. Seriously, if you have a chance to see Dylan and have been a fan of him in the past, do yourself a favor and go hear him. One of the most inspiring shows I've r seen. At least until Saturday. Saturday - Mavis Staples was doing a special benefit concert in St. Louis for the Black Alumni Association at Washington University. This concert was held at the Sheldon which is the most acoustically perfect hall in St. Louis and seats perhaps 600 people. She was there to pay tribute to the music of Mahalia Jackson. Words can not express how powerful this show was. It was just Mavis Staples and a keyboard player (primarily organ) whose first name was Tony who she said has won a couple of grammys. I don't know his last name but the guy was so ridiculously good that it was a joke (BTW it's not the person playing keyboards on her CD). I'm a white guy who grew up Presbyterian in conservative Orange County. I've never been to a Southern Baptist church before. I can only imagine that this is what it is like but to the nth degree. I've seen the Staples play and steal the show at the Long Beach Blues Festival some time back but this was altogether different. To hear the crowd yelling out exaltations while Mavis Staples was singing in a what can only be described as divinely-inspired voice while backed by a man who played keyboards that sounded like Booker T.and singing wonderful harmonies is as good as it gets. I will never be more moved. God Almighty, this is the most amazing thing I've ever heard. What a gorgeous voice with the richest lows you'll ever hear that Mavis Staples has been blessed with. Her stories about growing up and being mentored and befriended by Mahalia Jackson were poignant and beautiful. Once she started singing these songs made famous by Mahalia Jackson and let go, it was impossible not to be totally swept away. I'm questioning why I'm trying to explain this when I can't possibly describe in words how good this show was. All I can say is I'll never hear or see anything better than that. -John http://www.musicfolk.com/swoop
Re: Melba Montgomery, still going strong??
The only melba available is a fairly recent one on Playback which is in a lot of the bargain bins. Grab a Bobbie Cryner cd . Her vocals and melba's are practically twin. Harlan Howard has stated that the favourite recording of one of his songs is by melba Montgomery, a pretty good recommendation. Hey there, Joyce asks... Speaking of Miss Melba, does anyone know if any of her solo stuff has been issued on CD? I have a bunch of her albums, but have never seen anything but her duet stuff and the occassional "No Charge" on a compilation on CD. I really like those albums a lot. Last I checked (about a year ago) she has one and only one CD out. Titled something imaginative, like Melba Montgomery. I think the date on it was early 90's. It gets kinda new-country at times, if I recall correctly. Later... CK ___ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Re: The Hank Dogs/Gram Parsons tribute video
They were on the bill at Sid Griffin's Gram Parsons tribute show at the Garage here last autumn and performed, if memory serves,"Hot Burritto 1". The word is that the show's coming out on video quite soon. It's definitely worth seeing as an example of how do these things properly. There was also Peter Bruntnell doing "Kiss The Children", and Larry Love from Alabama 3 deconstructing "In My Hour Of Darkness", aside from Sid and the Porters. If you could hit off the tee forever, Garth Brooks would be in the baseball Hall of Fame before Easter. After the media coverage this week, you'd think Garth was a shoe-in for Cooperstown. You might expect to hear that Mark McGwire had called up for a for tips on how to handle the high, hard one. Of course, if you've played baseball beyond Little League and you saw the TV shots of Garth in the batting cages this week, it would take about 10 seconds to sniff this one out. Despite his college and high school athletic background, Garth ain't no spring chicken by Major League Baseball standards. Depending on which reference you consult, he celebrated a 36th or 37th birthday last week. Facts. Around 1,000 men will play Major League Baseball in 1999. Two- thirds will spend the entire season in The Show, the rest will be up and down between the majors and the minors. The vast majority will be in their 20's. Only 3 or 4 dozen will be older than Garth. Baseball is a game of mental skill, critical hand to eye coordination, and physical strength. By Garth's age, most major league players are former major league players and already entrenched in another career. Of those who remain valuable players into their late 30's, most will have survived on experience...s a v v y. All will have battled through more than one near career-ending hamstring pull, groin injury, and/or torn rotator cuff. Michael Jordan, perhaps America's greatest athlete since Jim Thorpe, bombed at the Double A level of professional baseball. Michael could run, of course. Since he didn't spend his young adult years in front of a microphone, Michael had the advantage of keeping in shape on an NBA court several nights a week. Great for the legs and lungs. If Michael could've just hit off a tee and not faced that doggone slider, things might have turned out differently for him in baseball. The Padres made it to the World Series last fall and immediately started a fire sale of their top players. It's a franchise that has gone through at least 3 ownership groups in the past 10 years, a franchise where fresh investment money can't be found fast enough. You can bet the Padres' honchos knows that ol' Garth is worth an estimated $ 75 million dollars. That might be play money for some major league baseball players, but it's more than most members of baseball's ownership groups are worth. For the most part, limited partners and minority owners are men (and a handful of women) who have achieved great success in other fields and take a small ownership interest in a major league franchise as an ego-stroking trophy. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, and the players appreciate the revenue stream. Garth may dream of slamming World Series homers. Haven't we all. But I suspect the Padres' ownership is setting up the golden one for an invitation to join their little ownership group. In the meantime, you've got to admire the guy's incredible ability to get media attention. John Michael Montgomery and wife Crystal are happy parents again. Mavis Staples
Thank you John Wendland for your terrific accounting of the Mavis Staples show in St. Louis on saturday night. I wasn't there and now I wish I'd have gone. John reminded me that St. Louis is the home of some truly world class gospel, blues and rb music. It's a "scene" that too few of us here from the rock and country side of the tracks are aware of or seek out, which is just a cryin' shame. It would be like living in Paris and never going to the Louvre. Kip
Re: Poor Paul Westerberg
Arm in arm with Neal... (Tommy Stinson in Guns Roses). . . but this frightens me. Is this true? I keep getting this response from people upon hearing this news, and it baffles me. I think its great and I can't wait to hear what they come up with. GnR came from Sunset Strip Hairville, but it was their punk influences opened the door for Nirvana. Its not like Tommy has been Mr. Profound and Prolific on his own, indeed even when he is good no one seems to care, so I think he's a great fit for the band. I miss seeing him play bass. Poor Paul Westerberg. He spent his time in the Mats cracking jokes, and everyone took him seriously. Now, he spends his time taking himself seriously, and everyone thinks he's a joke. Not everyone. I think from now on the first time you hear a new Westerberg record the initial reaction will be the same: "Oh, God, PAUL!" Then once you accept the fact that its not and will never be what it was again, you can listen and enjoy the fact that he's still writing good - and some great - songs.

NP
from Tower's epulse, P2 once again ahead of the curve. 6. EMOTICON OF THE WEEK: Emoticons are the often annoying vernacular of typographic symbols used to lend flavor to email. For the most part we all stopped speaking of them, let alone using them, at least a year ago -- things like :-) for happy and :-( for sad, not to mention the slew of related alphanumeric codes, such as "BTW" for "by the way" and "IMHO" for "in my humble opinion." But some trends just won't die, and a relatively recent digerati abbreviation is worthy of mention. Popping up for some time now on emails, especially on music-related email lists, is "NP" -- which stands for "now playing." The writer tags the end of an email with the name of the song or album he's listening to, more than likely on headphones hooked to the CD player of the computer on which he's doing the typing. Like the best emoticons, "NP" can be a valuable window on the psychology of your correspondent. When someone tags a sentence with :-) she may be happy or she may be trying to put a smile on a less-than-friendly missive. When someone writes you an email about a failed romance and tags the end with "NP: The Jam's Snap," there's nothing to worry about, but when it reads "NP: Blue Monday," a phone call may be in order. An "NP" in music-related correspondence serves as, perhaps, the ultimate act of one-upsmanship. A writer who tags an email with a CD by a hearty avant-gardist, such as Alvin Curran or James Tenney, is really saying, "Yeah, I do listen to this stuff." (Sure, he could be lying.) But "NP" can also have unintended consequences. There's nothing like reading a come-on from a would-be admirer -- or a lengthy email treatise on some heady subject -- only to find, at the end, "NP: Dream Theatre's When Dream and Day Unite" or "NP: The Lion King." At which point, depending on the reader's point of view, the value of that email may have diminished considerably. (Weidenbaum)
RE: Poor Paul Westerberg
Poor Paul Westerberg. He spent his time in the Mats cracking jokes, and everyone took him seriously. Now, he spends his time taking himself seriously, and everyone thinks he's a joke. Arguments lose me when they generalize. "everyone"? Sez you. Fwiw, you'd be hard-pressed finding a more dysfunctional, whining bunch of "fans" than the alt.music.replacements newsgroup. It used to be different, but the last year or so, the newsgroup's been overwhelmed by people hypercritical of Paul (and Tommy, Chris, and Slim, to a lesser extent). New album coming? "Bet it sucks" is the majority response. I don't understand this sort of "fan". They strike me more as a "keeper", someone who wants their musician held timeless in a cage. I like to think the open-minded fans are just lurking, sifting through the gravel for nuggets of info. He's not the same drunken poet of the 'Tim' era. I'm not the same v-chested swimmer from college. Time moves on, styles tastes change. The new album sounds wonderful. From the same man who wrote "Skyway", "Within Your Reach", "Sadly Beautiful", "Here Comes a Regular", and all those other wonderful tunes, I'd expect no less. Instrumentally, it doesn't have to sound the same - as Neil mentioned, his voice is all it takes to set off a sympathetic reaction. It's not a perfect album - I'm still struggling to find the meaning behind "Actor in the Street" - but it's a darn good one. Five years ago, I doubt Shawn Colvin and Paul Westerberg dueting would have thrilled me. Now, "Born for Me" is blissful. ("Self-Defense" remains my favorite track.) It's worth the $15 to make up your own mind. I'm buying the finished version next Tuesday. Chris np: PW - Suicaine Gratification, on repeat shuffle

Re: Runs in Hoses/ Poor Paul Westerberg
GnR came from Sunset Strip Hairville, but it was their punk influences opened the door for Nirvana. Jennifer This may be a mere matter of hair-splittage, but if I had to pick a Hollywood band that really opened up a door for Nirvana, I'd have to pick Jane's Addiction. I realize Axl and Co. incorporated punk and primal rock 'n' roll into Appetite, but by the time Nirvana showed up to the mainstream party four years later, they were as much a reaction to the exiles on hairville as anything else. In fact, the success of Nirvana seemed to be a repudiation of Guns 'n' Roses, and the lesser bands of that hair-farming ilk. Perhaps this is why GnR's "Spaghetti Incident" rang so hollow for me. After Nirvana, GnR's take on punk was all sound and fury, signifying nothing. Poor Paul Westerberg. He spent his time in the Mats cracking jokes, and everyone took him seriously. Now, he spends his time taking himself seriously, and everyone thinks he's a joke. I said this Arguments lose me when they generalize. "everyone"? Sez you. Chris said this in reply OK, my fault. So, let me enunciate my beliefs on Paul's new one. I don't think it's very good. Musically, I find it to be tepid, and lyrically, let's just say that Paul and I aren't exactly on "speaking terms" anymore. But, if it touches a nerve in you, then my generalization is particularly unfounded. But, let me say this. Generalizations can work both ways. Some of us old-school Mats fans don't necessarily want Westerberg to return to the "drunken poet" era of yesteryear--even though we may see all of his post-Pleased To Meet Me stuff as lesser works to one degree or another. For me, the "lesser" in question isn't contingent on "to drink or not drink." To me, the lesser at work is one of taste and passion. I just feel like he's mailin em in these days--and has been for some time. Live, he may resuscitate his earlier passion, but on disc it just doesn't sound like he cares whether I care or not. Maybe he does, but regardless, to suggest that I don't like PW's work because of some fantasy of juvenalia is as much a generalization as my earlier generalization was. Lance . . .

Re: SXSW - What is the deal
I haveta back up JC on this one. It's not the runners of SXSW's fault that every band in the world besides about 5 stink. It's also not their fault that the same percentage goes for record labels. It's all for exposure. The 'town' makes all the immediate money. Everyone else is trying to be seen or see. It's not exactly designed for outright fans with no agendas. The Gourds have great friends who work for SXSW, but since they are not looking to sign with any kind of label (because labels are evil), they were gonna aviod this year's festival and tour instead. But they were offered a chance to play a 'showcase' with Guided By Voices and either Tom Waits or Iggy Pop in front of an estimated 15,000 at the outdoor stage on Saturday. They couldn't pass that up, simply 'cause they are fans themselves. So, if that sounds good to you, also, then you should say, "yes" to SXSW. And just try to shut out the bad stuff like you do every day anyway. --Matt Cook Jerald Corder wrote: I won't defend SXSW since I work for a paper owned by 2 of the 3 SXSW owners but I will correct this misinformation. For my money, it'd be the Louvin Brothers' version, but your mileage may vary. BR5-49 also did a decent version on their live EP that probably turned a lot of younger folks onto the song. I don't have my copy of the "Billboard" book in front of me, but I believe that the Wilburn Brothers also had a decent hit with the song circa 1960. --Jon Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wollaston, Massachusetts
