US and Canada release date May 18th, 1999 titled "Red Dirt" by Andre "Mr.
Rhythm" Williams The Sadies. Besides a great first name g, the
interesting fact here is that Mr. Williams is a black singer who has been
living on skid row for years. If I remember Mr. Robshot Blood correctly, he
had some regional hits in the 60s (being based out of Detroit), but after
that everything went downhill. It wasn't until recently the guy straighten
himself up and started performing again. If you like funky grooves mixed in
with country and soul, this release is definitely worth checking out. Great
album.

The Cartwrights (was: Re: Upcoming Dallas shows)

1999-03-29 Thread André Kopostynski

Hi all,

Well, I caught the Cartwrights last Saturday night and they simply tore up
the Gypsy Tea Room. This was actually the second time I've seen the
Cartwrights (after the break up). They put on a (reunion) show about a year
and a half ago that was nothing to write home about. But this time around,
it was a totally different story.
Cowboys and Indians had just kicked off their set as I entered the club.
It's a shame Eric (singer/songwriter, guitar) Co. don't receive more
recognition than they do. They are simply one of the best western swing
bands in the nation. Saturday's show was one of the best C I performances
I ever seen (and I've seen quite of few of them over the years).
Right after their encore, I started feeling sorry for the Cartwrights
because the last show I saw (mentioned above) could not, by any means, live
up to what Cowboys and Indians had just done.
After the break, the Cartwrights came on stage and jumped straight into
"Crazy Broken Heart" written and sung by Donny Ray Ford. The sound was
terrible and the band struggled to find the beat. Unfortunately, my sorry
feelings started to become a reality. Just after three songs, the crowd
started to leave. As matter of fact, I was close to leave myself. But I
went over to the bar for another beer and the fourth song "Walking On My
Grave" (one of my favorites) came on. After a minute or so into the song,
the sound problems were almost eliminated and things were coming together.
From that song on, nothing could go wrong. The band simply tore up the
place with great, tight, honky tonk music straight from their hearts. I
dare to claim that Alan Wooley is one of the best guitar player around. He
certainly showed off his very best Telecaster skills throughout this show.
Although, I personally don't like Mr. Kooda's voice too much, his
interpretation of "Little Red Corvette" was killer. It's such a groovy
song, and with Kim Herriage's steel guitar, this song was one of my
highlights during the show. I'm certainly glad I opted to stay a little bit
longer that night. Crossing my fingers and hoping that the band will
reunite on a permanent basis. The alt. country world really needs
performers like Alan Wooley and Danny Ray Ford. Enuff said.

Re: Richard Buckner/Sebadoh in Dallas last night

1999-03-29 Thread André Kopostynski

Dancer reflects

Andre, I totally agree with you about Deep Ellum Live. What a
horrible place. I really hope I never have to go back there again.
The staff were total assholes, the crowd sucked, the sound system kept
falling apart. Nothing about that place deserved a show as cool as it got
last night.
Anyway, that's it. Thanks for all the recommendations...

Yeah, this venue is the worse thing Dallas has to offer when it comes to
outlets. Besides the rude staff and often annoying crowds, the place has no
taste in beer either. Last time I went (about five years ago for Steve
Earle - which was a great show with NO sound problems), I had the option
between Coors Light and Bud Light. The bartender claimed that most of the
people prefer light beer at Deep Ellum Live. What a bunch of @#%$$%@# bull
shit. After this experience, I pledged that I will never set my feet inside
that place again.
Thank god, Steve and Del are playing at Lakewood Theatre this coming Friday,
which is a very nice venue and only a three minute walk from my house.
Can't wait!

Re: Upcoming Dallas shows

1999-03-26 Thread André Kopostynski

Slobberbone is always fun, you can't go wrong on this one if you like their
stuff. However, Sebadoh and Buckner are booked to Deep Ellum Live which is
notorious for sound problems. God, I hate that venue. I wouldn't risk it.
Go to Denton!
Anyhow, if you're in Dallas this Saturday and you're broke (as I'm after
three great days in Austin and SXSW), Gypsy Tea Room is hosting its first
anniversary party with free admission. Cowboys and Indians and THE
CARTWRIGHTS (yeah!!!) are performing. Should be a lot of fun.
Ed Burleson and James Hand are playing at Sons of Hermann Hall tonight.
It was great meeting all of you during SXSW. I had a blast. A big applause
to Cherilyn, Bloodshot Records, and No Depression/MoM for their great
parties. Sorry I missed the P2 parties at Austin Motel, but I had to pace
myself this time around due to a nasty accounting test I had to take last
Monday.
And while I'm de-lurking for a change, has anybody heard a band called
Eleven Hundred Springs? These guys are my new local alt. country faves.
Their first album titled "Welcome to ... Eleven Hundred Springs" (label: 13
Recordings) released a couple of weeks ago is very interesting. Although a
bunch of the songs are CLEARLY inspired by the masters such as Hank, Merle,
George, and Bob (Wills), Mike Hillyer (vocal, guitar and songwriter) has
penned some great lyrics, and his voice really works for this kind of stuff.
I've seen them live only a couple times, but I was really impressed when
they opened for The Derailers two weekends ago at Gypsy Tea Room. 1100
Hundred Springs performs every Wednesday at Muddy Waters (always free
admission) on Lower Greenville in Dallas.

Is anyone going to be at either of these shows this Saturday?

a.) Richard Buckner w/ Sebadoh
b.) Slobberbone (in Denton)

Which do you all think would be the better one to go to...?
I actually got someone to work for me that night. God's been taking care
of me when it comes to shows recently...

Following on from the recent steel guitar thread, does anyone know who
provides the heartbreaking steel on Neil Young's "Tired Eyes" from the
"Tonight's the Night" album? Just listening to the Decade retrospective
 right now

Ndubb:

Ben Keith. Is now a good time to mention that Tonight's the Night just
might
be the greatest rock album ever? At least in my screwy head it is. Or at
least
close to it.

Tonight's the Night *IS* the greatest rock album ever in this screwy head.

1999-01-22 Thread André Kopostynski

Howdy,

James Hand's "Shadow Where The Magic Was" was among my top five releases of
last year. As Don implied, the production could have been better, but the
songwriting and the "feeling" on this album is just killer. Hank meets
Lefty. Although Mr. Hand is based out West, Texas (between Austin and
Dallas) this release isn't easy to come by. But you can try Tommy Alverson
(the producer) at Two of A Kind Productions, Inc. @ 817446-8041 (as it's
listed on the cover).

Or are any of our friendly P2 merchants offering this? I've been interested

was a self-release I believe. Can't wait 'til June.

Those of you just dying to get ahold of a copy of "Shadows..." let me know
and I'll see what I can do. There are very few left and distribution is
more than spotty. Also, there is some debate over who controls the
recording. If you can wait until June his new album will be out.

Howdy all,

I'm finally back on P2 after almost a year of absence. Work and school made
it just impossible to keep up with P2. Now, I'm back in school full time to
wrap up my last semester. Great to be back, folks.

My two cents on Steve's inquiry:

From Rig Rock Juke Box

"Do It for Hank " World Famous Blue Jays
"I Think Hank Woulda Done it This Way" The Blue Chieftains

I'm throwing this one over the wall. If you respond could you send it to

directly? I'm looking for songs about Hank Williams. Not Hank songs...but
one's about him. Right off the top of my head I can think of:

Alcohol and Pills - Fred Eaglesmith
Rollin' and Ramblin' (The Death of Hank Williams) - Robin and Linda
Williams
I Wanna Ride in the Car that Hank Died In - Austin Lounge Lizards
29 - Slaid Cleaves
Country Beats the Hell Outta Me - Jerry Dale McFadden

Any others?
