Re: Same Old 97s?

1999-04-28 Thread Jason Lewis

Has anyone else noticed that the opening track of the new Old 97s (Jagged) is
incredibly similar (read: exact same chord structure) to The Bottle Rockets $1000 Car,
all the way down to the electric guitar tone.

Call me nitpicky, but...

New York P2 musicians speak out!

1999-04-27 Thread Jason Lewis

 Buddy Ghost Rocket pontificates...

Now...if we could only get some of these folks to make pilgrimages together
out once in awhile to see some of us "small fry" like the afore-mentioned
Star City, or Elena Skye, or the Alphabet City Opry, or even...yes, dammit,
the Ghost Rockets! insert dramatic crescendo, cymbal crashes

Y'all come out once in a while say howdy, okay? We've all had our shots,
like to meet new faces, won't steal your girlfriends, brush after every
meal... besides, you never know when you'll have to pay the Big Bucks to
see one of us at Che Stadium (named after the famed Cuban guerilla leader,
Che Stadium) you missed your opportunity to see us for free at the Rodeo
Bar or for $3 at 9C...

--Yeah, what he said. I'll take it one step further and give you a list of the shows
and bands I know about. Print out the e-mail and come down to some, or all, if you can.

Elena Skye the Demolition String Band:

5/2Maxwell's in Hoboken w/ Damnations
5/12 Mercury Lounge w/ Cigar Store Indians
1st 3rd Tuesdays of every month @ 9C

Star City

5/6 Mercury Lounge w/ Josh Clayton/Jude
5/27 Rodeo Bar, 2 sets all by ourselves
5/29 123 Plesant St, Morgantown, WV w/ Muckafergason
(we've still got dates pending for Memorial Day weekend. Anybody need a good roots
rock band for their BBQ?)

The Ghost Rockets

These guys just posted their dates earlier today, I accidentally earsed it before I
printed. Can anybody repost or something?

Hank Williams Lonesome Cheatin' Hearts Club Band

They have a standing gig every Sunday at Parkside Lounge

The Hangdogs

Everybody should also check these guys out any chance they get. They do a lot of shows
at Rodeo and elsewhere. I think they just got back from a tour of Italy. One of the
best live bands I've seen, no joke. Make sure you're ready to drink.

I know there are other NYC roots outfits out there, I'm just blanking right now.
Anyone care to add anything?

Willis in NYC 5/6

1999-04-26 Thread Jason Lewis

Wanted say first that it was great to meet Barry and Amy and all you guys, however
briefly. We should try to keep the homefires burning; it's so hard to get any kind of
community feel here in NYC, its' always fun when you see one starting to develop, but
hard to keep one going. there are a lot of good bands and shows that are coming up,
and having grown up in a small town, I always love to see people I know when I go out.

Secondly, I was wondering what everyone thought of the Kelly show. Anyone. I wasn't
all that impressed and I was wondering if it was an aberration.

NYC Willis Weekend Gathering

1999-04-21 Thread Jason Lewis

I was hoping someone in the know regarding the P2 meet 'n' greet in conjunction with
Kelly Willis this weekend could tell me what's the plan. Where ye meeting? When? Which
night? and anything else. I've been lurking long enough, it's time to get out in the
world.

I know this has all been covered, but I had to find out what my weekend was going to
be like before I knew if I was going to be able to go.

Another thing:

If anyone's interested, my band (Star City) just finished recording a record and we
have some promo cds that I'm giving away to all takers. Some of you might have heard
of us. (Maybe not.) We play around the city a lot at Rodeo Bar and the like. I know
this falls into the shameless self-promotion category, but hey, I'm giving the things
away. If you don't like it you can make it into a coaster or add it to your promo cd
mobile. I'll be bringing a big bunch of them to the show with me.

Thanks in advance.

Isn't it that New Radicals tune? I don't know what it's called. Anyone?

Can anyone tell me what the name of the song is that's playing in the
background of the tv previews for the new John Cusack movie "Pushing Tin?"

RE: Single Most Influential 20th Century Pop Musician

1999-04-19 Thread Jason Lewis

Your comments mirror those that have come in since I sent you the message. I for one
enjoy these things on a one on one basis, but back and forth over this list thing get
a little annoying.

The whole thing started because the argument was that Jahnny Cash was more influential
that Dylan. Rediculous, I know, but that's what they were arguing about.

Did you get to see any of the Cash thing on TNT last night. I thought some moments
were great, and others schlocky.

Re: No controversy here

1999-04-14 Thread Jason Lewis

I just pulled out my Mojo from 10/98 and Lennon is #4. I assume that this is the issue
they're talking about; why would they do the same thing twice w/in 6 months?

The top 10 are as follows:
10. Otis Redding
9. Sam Cooke
8. Stevie Wonder
7. Elvis
6. Marvin Gaye
5. Billie Holiday
4. John Lennon
3. Ray Charles
2. Frank
1. Aretha

If Mojo has repeated themselves then consider my shoe in my mouth.

This list also, in no way relects my own top ten. I'm just reporting the facts.

Re: Opinions on Trace Elliot Velocette amp?

1999-03-12 Thread Jason Lewis

Brad (and anyone else out thh might be interested),

I don't know the Trace-Elliot amp of which you speak, but the best amp I have ever
heard a lap steel played through is a Fender Pro Junior. I think it's an 8 or 12 watt
amp and the tone is without compare. My band (Star City) used one extensively in the
sessions for our record and it's very warm and fat with a nice amount of bite if you
drive the tubes hard.

A close second is a Fender Super Champ, which is a little easier to find.

I don't know where you're located, but I would check out your local Buy Sell-type
papers. Some people are selling these thing for really cheap because ton't know what
they have, but the people who know are starting to charge more for them.

Hope this helps.

NYC P2 folks--Star City

1999-03-10 Thread Jason Lewis

I know this is extremely last minute, but I just came back to the list yesterday and
it occured to me just now to send this out.

Some of you may have heard of us, some not, but my band, Star City, has a gig tonight
@ the Rodeo Bar, located on the corner of 27th St 3rd Ave. Show starts @ 10:00pm

A little history: We've been around now for about 31/2 years, played with some of your
faves (Waco Bros, Old 97s, Richard Buckner, Courtesy Move, Hangdogs, Ghostrockets,
plus a few more, most recently the Silos on Valentines Day). We've just finished a
record that we hope to get out soon and I think, based on what you all talk about on
the list, you would like what we do. I hope anyway.

If you can, come on down tonight. If not, hopefully some other time.

Thanks,

Jason
