Bootlegs vrs. Used CDs

1999-03-24 Thread Lord Rat

Do any of you who are against bootlegs buy used CDs? The artist receives
nothing from them either. Are they also a form of theft? Is Garth Brooks right?

  Hey all,

I've been thinking about picking up a home CD Recordable unit. Does
anybody out there own one, or have you heard of a particular
brand/model that is supposed to be good? Does the quality vary alot
between brands? Also, is there any audible difference between getting
a home unit (stereo component) and buying one for a computer with the
intent of duping music?

  thanks -- Shawn

If you the thought of having to go beyond 'Plug 'n Play' doesn't frighten
you, a computer CD recorder is the way to go. Besides the difference in
price for media noted in Jon's reply, the hardware for stand alones is more
expensive as well and not nearly as versatile. Stand alones won't create
CD-ROMs, for example. I've have my Plextor 4/12 for just over a year now,
and have burned over 150 CDRs without any major problems, and I highly
recommend it. Plextor has an excellent reputation for quality and customer
service, but they are also among the priciest. If you don't mind rooting
through a lot of pointless debate, the comp.publish.cdrom.hardware is an
excellent starting place for more information.

What is required for this, software-wise. How much was your Plextor 4/12?

The Plextor 4/12 were going for $425+ back in 2/98. Since then, they've
come our with an 8 speed writer, so I'm sure the price has dropped. You'll
need a SCSI card for the Plextors and some others, but there are IDE
writers as well. 2 speed IDE writers can go for as little as $200, but I
have no idea of their quality. As for s/w, I use Easy CD Creator for CDROMs
and Nero for audio CDs. My computer is a P90 w/ 32M, so the hardware
requirements are no big deal.

A bit related to the used vinyl thread - I've been wondering about that cd
recorder (I think it's made by Sony) which has been advertised on TV for the
past six months. I've thought that this might be a good way to record my
beloved vinyls in order to preserve whatever value my vinyls have left.
Does anyone have it and for that matter, would it be a good buy? Thanks in
advance,
Tera

I've had a CD recorder in my computer for just under a year now, and I love
it. It is both cheaper and more versatile than the stand alone models, but
it can be a bit difficult to get up and running properly, depending on your
skill and the age/quality of your computer. Although recording vinyl would
definetly be easier using a stand alone, recording to hard drive and then
cleaning up the song using a sound editing program like Sound Forge gives
you a lot more control over the quality. If you want more details, just ask.

Ha, I mean Hank Thompson. I was listening this morning to "We've Gone Too
Far," on the Capitol Collector's Series CD, and caught what sure sounded
like a Dale Potter lick on the fiddle break, but I don't know that Potter
ever recorded with Thompson, at least not that early (1954), and I was under
the impression, perhaps wrongly, that Thompson was recording out west. So
now I'm really curious as to who the fiddler was; does anyone have the
Thompson boxed set to check it out?

I can't help you, but maybe you can help me. I love the Vintage Collection
of Hank Thompson, and have been thinking of buying the Capitol Collector's
CD from BMG Music Club. But since it is out of print everywhere else, I
can't get a track list. I don't want to but it if it overlaps the Vintage
CD too much, so if you could provide a track list or, if you have both,
just tell me the # of tracks shared by both CDs.

Thanks
