Angry Johnny and the Killbillies

1999-04-15 Thread bratkat57

I am hoping one of you kind folks could give me some insight with regard
to the above. I have been asking friends - many have "heard of them"
but no one has any first hand knowledge. They will be at the Rodeo Bar
in NYC tomorrow and I am wondering if it is worth the trip from CT.

A friend sent me the below but that's all I seem to be able to get at
this point.

Found something: according to Village Voice: "the most rip-roarin',
butt-kickin', combo yet to bust out of the no-depression ranks will no
doubt tear up the joint" ...

Any advise/info would be greatly appreciated. On or offlist is fine.

Thanks, Kat

Re: Rusty Wier

1999-04-08 Thread bratkat57

Rusty is alive and kicking in Austin. Tuesdays and Wednesday he is
usually at Gino's Italian Grill. Thursdays Rusty can be found at the
Saxon Pub (as well as an occasional Friday or Saturday night). Rusty
also gets to Dallas to perform at Poor David's once in awhile.

"Are We There Yet?" (co-produced with Larry Nye) features Rusty's son,
Coby on guitar. Coby is a great player and has brought a new college
age crowd to Rusty's shows.

"My Side Of The Story" was co-written with another son, Bon Wier. As
far as I know Bon was Rusty's drummer for a while (but after getting
married left for a 'day job').

Jerry Jeff Waker, Steven Fromholz, Ray (Wylie Hubbard) and Larry Joe
Taylor provide some of the vocals on another great tune, "Hot Spot" (co
written with M. Ballew, B. Moulds and Rusty).

That's all I know..

Just outta curiosity. Back awhile (like the 70's-early 80's) I snagged
a few pieces of vinyl from Austin based singer/songwriter Rusty Wier and
loved them. Was listening to one the other day and wondering what ever
became of Mr. Wier and what might he be doing now. I haven't seen
anything by him in years.

Dale Watson Report?

1999-04-03 Thread bratkat57

Kate - I did't get back to CT until sunrise on Friday and had to work
that day but here is your report.

Dale Watson and the guys delivered an awesome show (as usual) on
Thursday at the Rodeo Bar in NYC. After a few problems with the mics and
monitors the crowd was treated to another great show by Dale. Dale and
the Lonestars started off with a few of Dale's songs and then quickly
launched into the 'living legends' part of the set. After a quick
break, the guys returned to the stage for a shorter second set - mostly
requests from the crowd. Dale sang two out of three of my requests -
'Poor Baby' and 'Exit 109'.
Billy Dee (GA Male Vocalist of the Year), Ricky Davis (he's the best!)
and Scott (yes, he was with the Dixie Chicks for about a year and a
half) were right on the money!
The bar was so crowded if you weren't lucky enough to get a seat at a
table or able to find standing room close to the tables you could not
hear much. I was lucky enough to get half a chair (compliments of
Buddy-Ghost Rockets) so I was able to get a few good photos.

After the show Dale talked with the fans, posed for pictures and signed
autographs.

At the end of the night Dale found a note from NY's finest on the
Longhorn Suburban in the form of a $60 parking ticket (Welcome to the
Big Apple).

I must give Charlie Gouveia (Roadbilly Management) lots of credit for
keeping everything running smoothly despite a few problems with the
venue. Come on, give the guy a table for the CD's and t-shirts -
sheesh

Artists - Selling your albums through CD Now I recently wrote to CD
Now to ask how an indie artist can sell their music through the CD Now
service. The prompt reply is as follows:

Dear __,

Thank you for contacting CDnow.

We work predominantly with Valley, a major one-stop, which provides us
with our selection. It has been difficult to stock independent music at
Valley because of limited shelf space. But with help from The Orchard, a
new on-line distributor/warehouse, you can get your releases into
Valley's database (and thus into CDnow) and have them sold for as low as
$10.00. All you need to do is visit The Orchard at
http://www.theorchard.com and go through their sign up procedures. Their
goal is to allow EVERY band and label access to Web distribution. Once
you are carried by The Orchard you will be in the CDnow store. Go ahead,
check it out! If you have any questions contact them at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or call 212-941-1979.

I saw Bekka in October '98 at Barbara's in Printer's Alley. She just
walked in to jam for a little bit. She has a rockin' voice filled with
soul. Her Mama would have been proud. A lot of Tina Turner influence -
just happens that Tina and Bonnie are close friends. Bekka had just
come off the road from touring with Billy Joel. And last I heard she
was singing backup with Travis Tritt.

Bonnie had a bit part (several episodes) in the sitcom Roseanne. She
sang in their local drinking establishment with David Crosby.

Greg Garing Friends

1999-02-01 Thread bratkat57

I saw Greg and Friends this past Friday night for the first time. I
asked my friend, Holly Tashian what to expect and she told me I was in
for a treat. Well, she was right. It was a great show at a very nice
smaller venue, Emmerline Theater in Mamaroneck, NY. Some familiar songs
and a few originals too.

Greg surrounds himself with very fine musicians (I just hope I get the
names right):

Bob Clark - bass and guitar
Barry Mitterhoff - mandolin
Buddy Woodward (Ghost Rockets) - banjo and bass
Mary Olive - (sorry I can't remember your last name -but I do remember
you wonderful voice) - vocals

It was a great show - I look forward to seeing them in the future.

1999-01-28 Thread bratkat57

Hi Jon - Thanks for posting the article about my friend Barry Tashian.
I don't know if I would classify The Remains as punk (but what do I
know?). The article didn't mention Barry's nine years (80-89) with
Emmylou Harris (The Hot Band). Or his recent work with his wife, Holly
(bluegrass duo). Barry and The Remains did their first reunion show
this past September 23rd in Leon, Spain and another show at Coney Island
High in October.

Barry wrote a book about his experiences with The Beatles (The Remains
toured with them in 1966). The book is called Ticket to Ride and can be
bought though his web site along with The Remains cd's.

For all those in the NY area - Another friend of mine, Dale Watson will
be at the Rodeo Bar in NYC on April 1st.

Dale is also scheduled 3-31 at the Tin Angel in Philly.

On 3-2 Dale will be in Richmond at Moondance.

Also, Barry and Holly Tashian will be performing at the Levitt Pavilion
in Westport, CT (their hometown) on June 25th. (203) 226-7600.

Hi Jon - I read the article to a good friend of Barry's (In fact, he
played bass with Barry in The Schemers - pre-Remains). His thought is
the writer probably is too young to remember the Remains. He always
considered the Remains (and the Schemers) a "garage" band. He wasn't
sure when punk was first coined but thought it post-dated the Remains.

Will be a great show
