1999-04-21 Thread gregg mccraw

Hi NC/SC Music fans:

Tickets for these upcoming concerts at The Neighborhood Theatre are
available in independent record stores in Charlotte Huntersville ...
you can pick them up or order by phone (704.309.2087); or on-line @
www.maxxmusic.com.

Saturday, May 22nd @ 8:00 PM

Junior Brown

returns to the Neighborhood Theatre This one is being
co-produced with Paul Sharon of NT fame. We're not 100%
sure yet but Mandy Barnett should open the show - she's being
called the best female vocalist out of Nashville since Patsy Cline!
And you get this all for $20.00

 Saturday, June 26th @ 8:00 PM

The Blotter Boys

make their Neighborhood Theatre debut - they're the super-group
consisting of Vassar Clements on violin; Buddy Cage (New
Riders Of The Purple Sage/The Band/Bob Dylan) on pedal steel;
Sammy Piazza (Stevie Ray Vaughn/Hot Tuna) on drums; Boyd
Albritton (Quicksilver/John Lee Hooker/Buddy Miles) on guitar and
Mike Sudderth (The Grass Roots/Billy Joe Royal) on bass.
Tapers get ready - this is a deal at $15.00.

Sunday, May 9th @ 8:00 PM

Chris Whitley and Chris Knight

The night of the Chrises ... I'm really excited about this one - Chris
Whitley has been a favorite since the release of Living With The
Law in 1991(I'm sure you remember the title track, Big Sky
Country, Poison Girl, Dust Radio) and he's returned to that National
Steel sound on his latest - Dirt Floor! Chris Knight's self-titled
debut ranks right up there on my favorite of 1998 list - if you haven't
heard it, think Steve Earle, Fred Eaglesmith ... just think about going
out buying it!! A night with the two Chrises will be $12.50.

Thanks for supporting live music in Charlotte!

Elena Skye The Demolition String Band

1999-02-17 Thread gregg mccraw

If you're in the Atlanta, GA or Chapel Hill, NC areas - check out Elena
and her band when they come to town this week.

We just had them as guests at the Americana Showcase in Charlotte and
they sure deserve a listen! A great honky-tonk 4-piece - John Abbey
smokes on the upright bass and Phil Cimino drums with only a snare
high-hat, he's a heavy hitter with such a musical touch that you'd
think he was getting all those sounds out of a huge kit. Then there's
Boo Reiners' guitar work- Bill Kirchin would be proud of the way he
makes that tele twand - and Elena's voice - it's powerful and full.
She's a pretty hard-driving guitar player herself!

If you like the DeRailers sound, you'll like 'em - not as polished
tight (yet) but they had people up and dancing for the full hour set.
Or if you liked their new CD, One Dog Town, I think you'll like the live
show even better. By the way - don't miss the quote on the back side of
their band T-shirts - it's way funny!

Check the week's listings - I think they said Dottie's in Atlanta
(Wed??) and Local 506 in Chapel Hill.

Americana Showcase - Tuesday Feb 16th - Charlotte, NC

1999-02-14 Thread gregg mccraw

Hi all of you NC/SC Americana Fans:

Time for the weekly update for the Charlotte Americana Showcase, held
weekly at the Double Door Inn, 9:00 PM $5.00 cover.

This Tuesday, February 16th:

Lenny Federal hosts with
Michael Reno Harrell
and special guests

Elena Skye and the Demolition String Band

Elena along with Charlotte native Boo Reiners and the rest of the
Demolition Stringers have been delivering their fresh take on retro
honky tonk for the last 5 years in NYC. They are regulars at Greg
Garing's Alphabet City Opry (the NYC version of our Showcase) and were
recently part of the Hank Williams Birthday Tribute. Skye began playing
bluegrass at age 14 and studied mandolin with Kenneth "Jethro" Burns
(Homer Jethro). Boo began playing 5-string banjo in NC and he has
played with musicians ranging from Brian Setzer, Donald Fagen, Steve
Earle to Freedy Johnson. The band is currently touring in support of
their debut release, "One Dog Town" - "performances .. by an eclectic
cast of musicians who converged where honk-a-billy swagger, good
bluegrass raisin' and some rock and roll battle scars nudge, bump and
grind into each other in an oilydirt lot at a county fairgrounds."

Come on out Tuesday night - we don't want Boo's bandmates thinkin' that
NYC audiences are better than his homies'!!!

Tuesday Night Americana Showcase - January 19th

1999-01-14 Thread gregg mccraw

Hi all of you NC SC Americana Fans - it's the latest update for our
weekly Showcase held at the Double Door Inn in Charlotte, NC, every
Tuesday Night starting at 9:00 PM.

Tuesday, January 19th:

Lenny Federal, David Childers and
Special Guest Andi Hoffman The B-Goes

If you made the Black Mountain Music Festival last year, you know who
Andi is… a native of Bern, Switzerland, Andi formed the first B-Goes
lineup there in 1989. In 1993, he set out to travel the US and ended up
settling in New Orleans. The Bayou country has provided a rich
influence for Andi, especially the sounds he encountered, from
indigenous music to night-time swamp sounds. The last five years
flooded his imagination and resulted in the release of Dante Street, a
CD which has been compared with Daniel Lanois’ works. Don’t miss Andi
and a band which features former members of Woodenhead, Sub-Dudes and
Anders Osbourne.

See Ya Tuesday,

Maxx
