I've got a 5300. I've used it with a MegaHertz 14,400 and a GV Platinum
Port Pro (28,800 and 10BaseT). Both work fine except for the dongle on the
GV has a bad 10BaseT connection. I also have a Kingston 10BaseT. From my
research most modems should work. The exceptions are Winmodems and
CardBus. Winmodems uses the laptop's processor for DSP work in the modem
and are specific to x86 processors. 5300 isn't CardBus compliant so
CardBus cards won't work. I don't think I've seen any CardBus modems
though. Ethernet cards are a different matter. They do need a software
driver specific for the Mac. I've been looking at some 10/100 cards and am
wondering if they use chipsets that are supported by someone else's driver.
This seems to be fairly common with PCI cards but if it's so with PC Cards
it's harder to find out.

Re: 1400 Max Hard Drive for SCSI Disk Mode

2001-08-16 Thread David Allen

The entire article from Apple is at:
http://gemma.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn1116.html

The short answer is NO. The problem is ROM related and is not fixable. The
details are in the Tech Notes. The limit is 4 Gigs, but you might get away with
using a single less than 4 Gig partition. The rest of the drive's partitions
wouldn't be accessable while connected as a SCSI Disc.

Any Apple System Profiler that runs on a PB 180 is pretty gut less and
doesn't say much about anything. I would look on the Global Village web
site for a GV AT Command set (any GV set really) and see if there is a
command that identifies the modem. Start up a Serial (not modem)
connection to the modem using Appleworks or another terminal emulator and
try the command. Even if it isn't a GV modem it might work.

I'm doing the same thing with a 5300. Idon't know about the SCSI Disk
mode. I guess I'll have to check it. It doesn't worry me, I hookup a
CD-ROM to install SW and otherwise use Ethernet for such things. "It's
better to install software this way as the installer sees the computer it's
installing on and not just a disk drive accessed from a different computer.

If you are interested, OtherWorld Computing has a 20Gb drive for $115.

I've got a "USRobotics Megahertz 56k PC Card Modem" (XJ1560)
I rarely use it, but it works well with my 190cs. Its got that neat XJack
connector, so you don't have to fiddle with a dongle.

As for ethernet, I've seen cards on eBay that go inside the 'Book and
provide an external monitor connection and ethernet. The seller says that
they are for 5300s, does anyone know if they work with 190s?

Re: pc card modems and lan cards on 5300/190's

2001-08-16 Thread David Allen

I use a GV 56k Modem Ethernet card (Model A959, which is also usable with
PCs) for my on the road needs and have the side benefit of being able to
connect to my network via Ethernet. The 10BaseT networking capabilities
are worth the price of the card as they allow me to transfer data and
programs directly over my network with a simple plug in of a Cat5 cable and
a couple of control panel/chooser settings. I bought mine through eBay for
$40, which might be a bit high, but it was guaranteed not DOA and worked
great after I downloaded the version 3.0.2 upgrade (includes a full
installer) and then upgraded to the latest version. (3.0.6)

It uses a single card slot. (I'm not sure if it is a Type 1 or Type 2 size,
but it doesn't block the second slot, so it's not a type 3.) It has very
low power draw (I noticed no difference in battery life with it running.)
and doesn't need an external power supply. (I'm checking into a cellular
adapter to give me completely self contained internet capabilities when I'm
away from civilization.)

CoStar Stingray Trackball

2001-08-16 Thread Esver Camacho

I recently acquired a Costar Stingray Trackball 2.0 for my PowerBook
1400. This is an ADB trackball with two very large buttons on either
side. Does anyone know where I can get the Control Panel software
that it originally came with? I'd like to program the second button
to do a control click. Right now the only option is a switch under
the trackball that allows Click-locking either the left or right
button.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Battery recharges while in PB165c?

2001-08-16 Thread David Allen

The battery should charge while in the PB, with the PB running or not. The
icon is the charge indicator. It should be solid when the battery is
completely charged. If the battery shows charged, but doesn't work with the
adapter removed, it is one of two things: 1. Bad battery, a very common
problem. The batteries don't last for more than a few years before they
refuse to hold a charge anymore. 2. The charging system in the PB is bad.
It happens, but I'd bet on the bad battery.

Battery for PB180?

Hello, My PB180 needs a new PRAM/CMOS battery. I've searched the Net and
found one - $23 or so - at eBatts.com. However, it says "Rechargeable
Lithium CMOS Battery" The part that concerns me is the "rechargeable", as
I nkow that many rechargeable batts come with little charge. Can someone
shed some light on this? How in the world might one recharge their *PRAM*
battery, even if that batt is rechargeable??

I have only seen the RJ11 and mini-din8 types on powerbooks. The

Re: 180 internal modem

2001-08-16 Thread Sue Mirlo

Vesa:

The internal modem of a PB 180 can be of many types. One of the most common was the
Apple Fax/Data Modem 9,600. Pretty slow. The only thing you can do with this speed
is email, and it will take for ever. But it is good for faxing. (You can always use
a faster external modem, if you want).

I do not know what kind of phone plug connector has your PB 180. If it was bought in
the US, it has the standard phone connector called RJ-11 jack. Where to buy this?
Well, I imagine that you can try www.buy.com that has a section for Europe.

Good luck!

They have a 540MB for the 190/5300/3400 but I would bet dollars to doughnuts
that you could swap out the drive for a larger one. Seems like the same
would hold true for any drive bay module.

How strange, I just looked at the site prior to posting the address. Plus I
just went to it again. Seems OK to me.

Try this one too if it still won't work for you:

The page isn't there anymore, unfortunately. But I've just been through
the site (purely research, I assure you
;-) and the only 190/5300/3400/Kanga ones they have right now are 800MB
drives for $99. Still v. useful. Used to have one (1.4GB) on the 5300.
Also 1.6GB ones turn up occasionally on ebay (I just missed out on a 6GB
for Lombard/Pismo, dammit!)

Check here

Look at items for the 190/5300 as well as the 3400. The expansion bay
modules are all interchangable with the 3400.

Battery recharges while in PB165c?

2001-08-16 Thread pjewett

Is my removable battery in my 165c supposed to charge while it's IN the
powerbook? I see an image of a battery up in the right hand corner of the
screen that is a solid color but I don't know what it means or how to
charge this thing. When I unhook the AC adapter it goes dead.

Thanks, kinda new to these things.
