Playing sound files on Pb190

2001-10-17 Thread Johny

Hello all!
I have 2 questions.
1. Can I play mp3 (or wave, or...) sound files on my Pb190? (Mac OS 7.5.3)
2. If yes, then:
where can I find such a software for download.
I tried to find somewhat on the net, but all I have found, they're work
only on PPC machines.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Johnny

1. Can I play mp3 (or wave, or...) sound files on my Pb190? (Mac OS 7.5.3)
No. Not on any 68K Mac. But you can decode MP3 (slowly) to AIFF (lots of
disk space) using SoundApp 68K.

2. If yes, then:
where can I find such a software for download.
I tried to find somewhat on the net, but all I have found, they're work

The cheapest portable MP3 jukebox would be a PowerBook 5300. Works well.
Mine did.

Clock in PB 180 stopped

2001-10-17 Thread Magnus Rohde

The clock on my trusty old PB180 has stopped , the seconds in date and
time doesn't change :-(

The clock in the date time control panel doesn't show the correct date
and time. It is impossible to set the date and time: when the time has been
set it just picks a random date time.

I've tried resetting PRAM, resetting the Power Manager, changed PRAM battery
and reinstalled System 7.5.5 in that order. Nothing helped.

any suggestions?

Re: weird problem with Powerbook 520

2001-10-17 Thread Don Silver

I had the same experience (no hard drive spin up, just
clicking) when I inadvertently fried my old HD. I knew
right away, tho, what the cause of the HD melt-down
was--I forgot to install a SCSI terminator. This was
easily, albeit a bit expensively, fixed. I would hold
off on popping your new HD into your PBook and get the
old one tested at your local shop--if it's dead, you
need to find out why before you torch your new one; if
it's not, you've eliminated one potential source for
your problem.

cheers,
Don Silver

The 520/540/550's external SCSI port is limited to 5 MB/sec. This is often
referred to as Narrow SCSI.

There is a variant of this 8-bits-wide SCSI called Fast SCSI. This is used
internally in the 7500 and other similar Macs.

This is 10 MB/sec.

But, on machines so equipped, the external SCSI port is still 5 MB/sec.

And, this external port is on a separate SCSI bus controller chip on many
Macs.

An UW-SCSI port is 16-bits-wide, and is, consequently, capable of faster
aggregate transfers.

Certainly 20 to 40 MB/sec, unless it is forced into 8-bits-wide mode by the
device.

There is a 160 MB/sec variation.

I believe the PCMCIA UW-SCSI cards are from Adaptec, but there could be
others.

Most servers use UW-SCSI.

Current LVD (low voltage differential) SCSI drives are generally compatible
with single-ended SCSI, such as Narrow, Fast, and UW-SCSI.

PB 180 clock

Magnus

This sounds so much like a dead PRAM battery that I would consider looking
there again: test the battery separately, and check the contacts to make sure
it's seated properly. If everything else seems fine, the chances of it being
in the Mac OS ROM are very slim (corruption there would likely affect more than
just the clock, and only the clock), but you addressed that anyway, which is
good, thorough troubleshooting.

The symptoms point to the battery, although that should affect ALL settings
associated with your PRAM. Just for fun, you could try installing Superclock,
still available at many classic mac sites, to see if IT works properly. If it
does, than your hardware is fine, and all the calls work, and it then has to be
a software bug or conflict.

Let us know how you make out : )

Yeah but not enough CPU power to do the job unless it's a 100mhz or
better PPC upgraded one.

My point was that you _can_ play MP3's on lesser machines but only by
losing all the benefits except portability. I have a 40mhz

It's very prudent of you to wait rather than force your 280c open. There are
some small plastic eyelets that are very often broken off in the process of
cracking open this or any Duo. They're right under your right palm, at the
front, right, corner where the top and bottom meet.

I would strongly recommend downloading a service manual for your Duo and
follow the steps carefully. Unfortunately I don't have a link to follow.

Pretty much all the Duos can be upgraded to a PPC by swapping out the logic
board with that of a 2300. Everything else will match up. However you will
need one of the high output AC adapters (36 watt rather than 25) and there
may be an issue of heat if the stiffener/frame/chassis inside doesn't make
good contact with the processor. With the PPC upgrade you can install a much
larger, cheaper IDE drive (which will require an IDE ribbon cable).

As to your sound problem, the speaker gets power from the same ribbon cable
that goes to the LCD screen. Perhaps the connection at the speaker, or where
the video cable connects to the logic board is not properly seated. Or it
could be a software problem (sound out selection in control panel etc.). You
may try to zap the PRAM and see if that resets any defaults related to
sound.

HTH,
-makmac

.
Well, tonight I tried to get the PB online. It does get online through my
dial-up ISP that I am about to turn off in a few days, but now I can't get
 the Netscape browser to work.

Did you try reinstalling Netscape? What version are you using?

So there's an old old version of (pooey pooey
I HATE to even say this) AOL (v. 2.7!) that I decided to try. My
mother-in-law has an account that I can access. Well, no go there because
the account name has more letters in it than version 2.7 will allow. So
 that's out.

Sotell your mother-in-law to add an account name to her account (she's
allowed 7 names) that is 7 characters or less. Then try to access THAT new
name which will be useable in that earlier version of AOL . She signs up the
name with a password she tells you. YOU sign in with that new name and PW.
You will be sharing HER main account. I share my account with my sister--and
she lives in another state. The only caveat is that we cannot be signed on
simultaneously. You will be able to send and retrieve email but the browser
in that version is extremely limited in function. You can run AOL version 3
on earlier computers (the browser is somewhat better). You cannot run the
latest version because it requires a PPC. I can't remember whether version
4 requires PPC or not.

Re: PB 180 clock

2001-10-17 Thread Magnus Rohde

d. 17/10/01 18:12 skrev Martin på [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

This sounds so much like a dead PRAM battery that I would consider looking
there again: test the battery separately, and check the contacts to make sure
it's seated properly. If everything else seems fine, the chances of it being
in the Mac OS ROM are very slim (corruption there would likely affect more
 than
just the clock, and only the clock), but you addressed that anyway, which is
 good, thorough troubleshooting.

The battery (and entire board) was taken from a 160. It worked en that
machine yesterday, so I would think it would work in my 180 today.

The symptoms point to the battery, although that should affect ALL settings
associated with your PRAM. Just for fun, you could try installing Superclock,
still available at many classic mac sites, to see if IT works properly. If it
does, than your hardware is fine, and all the calls work, and it then has to
 be
 a software bug or conflict.

I tried to install SuperClock!, but no change :-(

BTW I tested the machine with TechTool Pro 2.5, it found two errors in the
FPU (the log2 and exp2 operations, they may be unsupported), _all_ other
tests passed (RAM, ROM, chipset etc.)

And for Paul Nelson:

It was a fresh reinstall of the system, from the downloadeble 7.5.3 cd
image, updated to 7.5.5 (with 4 floppys). I didn't reformat the HD though.

Thanks for the help so far!

CF card not reading

2001-10-17 Thread Donna Hood Pointer

Do you have PC Exchange turned on in the system? If it is turned on it will
recognize that CF card as a PC disk. If not, it will ask you if you want to
reformat it, because it cannot recognize it. that's how you can reformat CF
Cards.
They are PC format as you buy them. It's like putting in an IBM-formatted
diskette. If you have PC Exchange turned on you can see the diskette as a PC
disk. If not, it will say it is unrecognizable and will ask if you want to
reformat it.

Re: weird problem with Powerbook 520

2001-10-17 Thread Richard Adams

Thanks for the tips, I appreciate them. I thought the PPC upgrade was just a
chip replacement, I don't know if I'll bother with it if it's a lot more
involved (probably better for me to just get a 2300 or better on E-Bay at
that point - then again, I wanted the Duo largely 'cause I drastically
prefer trackballs over touchpads).

It's handy to know that the same cable goes to the LCD and sound output -
the display looks fine, so that cable is probably OK. I've only tried to get
sound through the Control Panel alarms setting and the Jigsaw puzzle (and,
of course, I don't have a start-up chime). AFAIK, the volume settings are
all on and up to max.

Thanks again for the help!

Ciao,

Richard

It's very prudent of you to wait rather than force your 280c open. There
are
some small plastic eyelets that are very often broken off in the process of
cracking open this or any Duo.

With the PPC upgrade you can install a
much
larger, cheaper IDE drive (which will require an IDE ribbon cable).

As to your sound problem, the speaker gets power from the same ribbon cable
that goes to the LCD screen. Perhaps the connection at the speaker, or
where
the video cable connects to the logic board is not properly seated. Or it
could be a software problem (sound out selection in control panel etc.).
You
may try to zap the PRAM and see if that resets any defaults related to
sound.

-makmac

If you don't get a startup chime then it's almost IMHO a hardware
problem. Try plugging and unplugging something into the speaker jack
on the back - try listening with headphones to see if your hear
anything coming from the speaker jack. If you hear it from the
speaker jack and not the speakers when unplugged it means the speaker
jack is probably bad/stuck.

Just my $.02 worth.

Re: VST Tri-Media Reader and Zips and CF PCMCIA

2001-10-17 Thread M Forrest

Donna suggested:

Did you try reinstalling Netscape? What version are you using?

Can't reinstall it. Don't have it on floppy. And I don't have a floppy drive
hooked up to my iMac to make a floppy version from the CD version I have.
Can't d/l it because I can't get online with a browser to d/l it. Catch-22.

tell your mother-in-law to add an account name to her account (she's
allowed 7 names) that is 7 characters or less. Then try to access THAT new
name which will be useable in that earlier version of AOL

Believe me, I know more about AOL than I care to. Was one of the very first
subscribers years and years and years ago--1991 I think. Already thought of
this option, but my mother-in-law is vacationing and away from a computer
for another month or so (can you believe being offline for that
long??!!!). Anyway, that option will not work right now. Yes, I could
call and get her password, but her user name is also too long. So going the
AOL route is just off the list of possibilities right now.

And no, it's not worth installing AOL on my iMac and calling her for her
account info and me setting up another account on her account while she is
away. That's just a lot of futzing. I think I have a much easier
workaround.

At this point in time, I am just going to wait for the Compact Flash card
and USB CF/SM reader to arrive Just got the PCMCIA CF adaptor today. It
seems to be a far smaller headache than taking the PB directly online at
this point. The CF card and CF/SM reader are due to arrive Thursday or
Friday, Saturday at the latest. So I just have to hold tight until then.
Patience...ugh!

If I want to make the PB capable of being online at some point in time,
updating browsers and such will be far easier via and CF card, I think.

I am a little concerned that the USB CF/SM reader is a reader only and not
also a writer, but I did a little research and it SEEMS that I should be
able to drag and drop over to the reader from my iMac. I am keeping my
fingers crossed, anyway. If not, I'll just sell this reader and get a
reader/writer. I only paid $10 for this one, so I know I can sell it and get
back what I paid for it.

Once I finally get the CF card and reader, I'll report in on how it all
works out just in case someone else on the list is interested.

Thanks,
Morgan

Re: Re[2]: weird problem with Powerbook 520

2001-10-17 Thread Richard Adams

I appreciate the input, Mike, but there is no speaker jack on the back of a
Duo 280C. However, the principle is sound enough, and I should be able to
apply it when my recently purchased Duo Dock arrives. Thanks for the idea!

Ciao,

Richard

RA It's handy to know that the same cable goes to the LCD and sound output
-
RA the display looks fine, so that cable is probably OK. I've only tried
to get
RA sound through the Control Panel alarms setting and the Jigsaw puzzle
(and,
RA of course, I don't have a start-up chime). AFAIK, the volume settings
are
RA all on and up to max.

It isn't a real upgrade, though. What you are doing is swapping
the bottom of a 2300C for the 280C bottom. Motherboards are listed for
$125 on ebay, so it probably is easier to buy a 2300C instead.

Exactly as I suspected. Thanks for the input, Paul, I appreciate it.
