I'd actually like to find a way to download them to a print file or
something as a standalone backup.

So, you deleted the addresses from the address book, and they still turn up
in the Message To menu?

I haven't seen something like that ever, but here's a suggestion: Most of
the Eudora files are simple text files, open it with something like BBEdit.
I just tried it, and it's just a simple list. If the old adresses are
there, delete them, save the file, and see if they are gone from the menu.

If not, at least you have a list of the addresses that you'd like to keep.

I did something similar, some time back when one of my mailboxes got too
big for my Q800 to handle it. I opened it with BBEdit, cut it in half and
saved it as to different files. It worked fine, so I reckon it should be
save to fidle around with the nicknames file too. You probably should try
it out of a copy first though.

Good Luck

Re: 1400 and Orinoco 7.2

2002-09-21 Thread Brian

On the 1400 you have to use the 6.04 software install. See my post of
about 9-5-02 or so for detailed comments from the Lucent engineer/support
about this and the ftp site link to the older version.

They said the 1400 would not work with 7.x version. They also said that
out of the box my Orinoco card might not have the latest firmware, but it
should be new enough to be OK regardless.

Make sure you have WEP disabled for your first tests to rule out encryption
issues.

first off wep sucks(wep can be broken) it slows down your network all it
means is that if wep is off anybody driving around and finds your network,
they will be able to surf the net from there car as, long as you have your
individual computers with guest access turned off they wont get into your

(and dont make your passwords for the puters your home address or street

and please dont make your base station password an easy one thats the number
one killer to many times ive seen ap passwords set to the default of

original. the bottom line is just make sure guest access is turned off on

Re: Eudora Ghost Names

2002-09-21 Thread martin

Finally solved it!

When nicknames persist in the Message To menu in EUDORA, even though
all nicknames are turned off, or even removed from the parent folder,
the fix is
to rebuild the .toc files in the Address Book(s).

Hold down OPTION while opening the Addressbook with the mouse, forcing
Eudora to rebuild these files, and clearing the Message submenus.

Whew, that took a little digging! Thanks to those who responded :)

So what about the 1400, you mean that's the 7.2 that's working ?

My understanding is that even with WEP encryption turned off, your WAP
won't allow them access, if you are enabling access on a case-by-case
basis, only allowing cards with a specified MAC ID. Which is easy to do.
That (on my WAP anyway) appears to be separate from WEP encryption (which
as others say has been broken anyway). But yes Tom, you have given up one
level of security by turning WEP off; how many people are sniffing wireless
connections really I'm not sure anyone knows (sniffing connections at that
level is separate from just someone just using open access points).

Good news about the 7.2 drivers, I figured after all your posts earlier
that they were the cause of his troubles.

Re: 1400 and Orinoco 7.2

2002-09-21 Thread Brian

So it all works, airport base station connected att broadband, tibook with
airport card, 2400 with skyline, 1400 with silver orinoco and 7.2
drivers...all if you give up WEP...go figure

My take from emails that I didn't post to the list, you might be able to
use WEP if you use the 6.04, and maybe not if you use the 7.2. I got
things going with 128 bit encryption with the 6.04 so just left it alone
(although I'm not using WEP now).

WEP 128 bit and the 6.04 drivers work with my gold card (the silver would
be 40 or 64 bit or whatever).

There was one goofy thing about entering the WEP key on the 1400 6.04
drivers though. It didn't tell you precisely but even though I needed 26?
28? ( I forget) characters for the WEP decryption key, on the powerbook I
also had to prefix them with 0x (that's zero x) for the 128 bit encryption
to work (and thus to let me connect properly). IIRC the instructions made
it seem like the 0x was included in the char count but really is was in
addition.

If you play with it the instructions in the earlier posts about
removing/disabling any 7.2 extensions before trying the 6.04 are likely
worth following.

The way I look at it, since the WEP key for either encryption strength is
broken, anyone bothering with the equipment to sniff wireless packets is
also going to be decrypting them too. But you can keep unauth. users from
just using your bandwith without the WEP anyway with MAC address
restrictions. They can go to a coffeeshop or wherever for their free
connection :)

Remy's right--that was introduced in OS 8.5. If you long for a menu bar
widget to connect, disconnect (from a modem) and have a simple launcher
for one email client, one web browser and even an ftp app, try Internet
Menu.

It's a freeware extension; I've used it with success in the past with 9.1.

Re: which dongle

2002-09-21 Thread David Deckert

 http://www.peaksource.com/item.jhtml?UCIDs=647998%7C659206PRID=520022
This last one sounds like what I have as well, but the picture (if
accurate) looks wrong and the part number I don't recognize.

This is in fact identical to the one I have for my 3C589C, so I can
 confirm
it works. There is a link LED under the RJ45 jack, and no 10/100 lights on
 the dongle plug.

Looks like this is my next purchase. My card isn't a C or a D, however.
Just looked at it -- it's a 3CCE589ET, which is still listed as compatible.
Thanks very much for the heads up, Cameron.

-David

OS considerations for newly acquired 1400c

2002-09-21 Thread JMCnetwork

I recently acquired my first color powerbook: 1400c/133/64/1G/8.5.1. Any
favorites or benefits in compatibility, speed and/or ram upgrading to 8.6 (a
consultant I spoke with preferred 8.5.1 and 9.1+ due to less software bugs
than 8.6) or maybe taking it down to 8.1?

I run Photoshop6, AOL5 w/GV 56k card (have an uninstalled Linksys Combo
Ethernet card model EC2T for when I look into DSL shortly), Opera5,
Netscape4.79, BBedit Lt6, Word98 (but have 2001), FMP4, Acrobat4, some
emulated game favorites, inits, tools and other minor apps (with 8.1, I'd
loose my dock and appearance themes and sounds; with 8.6 or 9.1 I'd get
itunes). Am I good to stay put?

Thanks for any insight!
Craig
