The batteries I got from Powermax are the Li-Ion ones for both the 3400 and
3500, though they say "Macintosh Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery for
Macintosh Powerbook G3", model number M4399.

Also of note is that the above batteries do not charge in my VST SCH3400
external battery charger, while the original 3400 batteries do charge fine.
The charger is listed as compatible with both types of batteries.

VST Smartdisk customer/tech service was helpful as ever: i.e., after a
series of emails, in which they confirmed that both batteries should work in
the charger, and that all the batteries charged okay in the 3400, they said
maybe my charger was defective and they might have to issue me an RMA to
send it for repairs or exchange. Then I never heard from them again...

Similar story re. an AC adapter I recently bought from them for my external
portable Firewire CDRW: they sent me a "Phihong" brand adapter (along with 2
Smartdisk adapters), and the first time I went to plug it into my CDRW,
sparks flew out from the AC jack when the adapter pin made contact; I got a
small electrical shock too.
Well, I fired off an email to Smartdisk - specifically to the customer
service person who had dealt with my original order (the online order showed
free shipping to Canada, but despite the fact that they'd accepted my order
and payment, they refused to honor it) - and she got back to me right away,
apologizing and saying tech support would contact me ASAP. A week later,
nothing. I guess sparks flying out of their products and giving customers
electrical shocks isn't an urgent issue...

I do like their products though. Shame about the people...

Hi Peter
I have used an Epson printer with a USB card without any problems. I
downloaded the newest driver from Epson and used that driver and it worked
like a charm. I had it on a 7600 PM with a generic card.
I have a friend who bought a new Epson 777 last summer and he is very
pleased with it, He is using a 6400/180 with another generic card. Working
perfect.
Both of the cards were purchased at a Staples Office Supply store.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy another card like them to run. I hope this helps

usb cardbus compatibility II

2002-09-23 Thread Peter Johnsen

Hi

I sent this message last week but my mailserver suffered from a virus
attack and sent two mails several days later, due to the lack of response I
conclude that my mail got lost in your mailboxes because of a dated date.

So I try again:

I am thinking about buying a carbus usb card to my 3400. But I have heard
that among other things Epson printers and certain keybords does not work
with a usb card but only with built in usb.

Is this true? If so do anyone know what will and what will not work?

Peter

Re: Best OS for 145

2002-09-23 Thread martin

concur with David on this. I have a PB145 running 7.5.3 because it's
the only way I can
make it network with my G4 via ethernet, but the machine runs
noticeably slower than
it did under 7.1, and I have less RAM to play with. I'm actually
going to ditch 7.5.3 and
go BACK to 7.1, using my Zip drive to sneakernet between the two puters.

No question, 7.1 is the best balance of features and footprint for
the PB145, IMHO.

The 3500 (Kanga) and the 3400c can and do both use the
same Li-Ion battery and the same NiMH battery. They
are both designed to know the difference and charge
them accordingly. Read page 14 15 and 16 of the
Service Source Manual. It discusses the 3400 and G3
(Kanga) battery as the same. It differentiates between
NiMH and Li-Ion and makes mention of the fact that the
5300 and 190 can use the same NiMH battery as the 3400
and G3.

You have the best OS for your configuration. Two MB of
RAM is not near enough for 7.5 or 7.6 I have a 145b

Re: Best OS for 145

2002-09-23 Thread David Pekarsky

I myself own 1 145 along with a couple 145bs a few 160s and the occasional
180 that I seem to find on my computer shelf. I LOVE 7.1 for the 145,
great options, not bad at all for ram which by the way I could sell you a
2mb stick to bump yours up to 4mb which you pretty much need anyway to run
an OS and any non-applet program at the same time. I do have 7.5.3 second
rev. on a 145b which has a noticeably slower speed than the 145 with 7.1
for finder tasks, plus you can't make your own desktop picture in 7.5 under
the control panel like you can in 7.1 and probably 7.0. These machines are
great for writing, spin down the hard drive and type away in dead silence,
not even a heat problem when I use it on my bed since the processor is only
25mhz. Most of the hds are only 40-160 megs for the 1xx series not
including the 150 or 190xx which are ide. The 1xx are great machines so
have fun with the one you have!

There's a new Dell here at work right behind me. Probably a few Ghz in
clock speed I'd guess. At the local public library they use an older PC
for the online card catalog. Both launch IE not just fast, but
essentially instantly. I suppose this is the benefit of a browser
"integrated" with the OS.

Doubtful. OS 9 doesn't inherently launch apps faster. The only recent Mac OS
capable of really fast app launches is OS X, the later the better.

>I didn't think it would install on a 3400.

Ryan Rempel's XPostFacto notes it "should" be possible, in the same way
that putting X on a Kanga should be. But with 144 max RAM and no G
upgrades, let's just say I won't be the first to go out of my way to
try it on MINE. OK, as an exercise I might if I had 144, but not 80MB
RAM.

Re: Trackpad button function on PB 5300cs?

2002-09-23 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Nils,

The 5300 does not have a tappable trackpad.

You have 2 options for obtaining that functionality:
1) ClickPad II control panel - software solution emulates a tappable
trackpad and intercepts certain taps on the pad, translating them into
clicks. In my experience, this software works unreliably and
inconsistently. It works, but not very well.
2) Get the entire trackpad assembly (including cable!!) from a
PowerBook 190 series (which HAS a tappable trackpad). This works
flawlessly - I'm using it in my 5300ce without any trouble after lots
of bungling around w/ ClickPad.

Hope that helps,
Drew

I have Eudora 3.1.3 on my PB 190 and configured it so it can
handle and mix multiple mail e-mail accounts. Way smaller and faster
than Outlook or Netscape mail. First you duplicate your Eudora
Settings and re-name them according to the account like "My Settings"
and "Vicki's Settings" and so on. Then launch Eudora which each
different setting and configure each as you will. All the mail lands
in the same mail list for you to filter. You can launch each distinct
account though I think there might be an AppleScript way to launch
each configuration in sequence instead of manually but I haven't done
it. Still busy trying to get my 6320 to file share with my PB 190.

Try without the main battery in.

Also try with another processor - I just had a 1400 with a G3/333 in which
showed similar problems and it was a dead processor.

Except Emailer doesn't do IMAP, which he asked about.

Alas, I don't know of any email clients that do both pop and imap that
run on a 68K. Netscape Comunicator 4.08 will do multiple accounts of one

I have MailDrop which is a really nice imap client, available at:

Some stuff is out of date. For example ,There hasn't been a MAc version

(Good thing, too it was gawd-awful, but back when we had a netware mail

a unix account so I telnet in and use PINE...)

PC Card manager, iirc, is the PC card extension in the System folder. I
suspect, from their list that they mean you need a Cardbus PC slot.

I've gotten tantalizingly close to getting the 540c (8.1) to recognize
and work with the Orinoco, even gotten so far as having a second network
interface recognized in TCP/IP control panel, but it doesn't work
(drivers come up with X's in them during startup) The tech from Orinoco
confirms that they were supposed to work with the 540. (it's even
mentioned in the installer)

I was advised to do a firmware upgrade on the Orinoco card, but haven't
gotten time on a PC laptop to play with it (the firmware upgrade is a PC
app.)

We might be getting some wireless base stations here at the College to
work with. When we do I'll be a little more motivated to get it working.

I findthe interface enhancements in 7.5.5 make up for the fact that
the 68k CPUs run a bit slower using it instead of 7.1.3.

I put it on pb100 and SE/30's.

YMMV. I suggest backing up the HD via appletalk to a desktop mac
(system and all), install 7.5.5, and if you don't like the higher OS
version, just copy the old OS back, rebless the system folder, and
you're good to go. Since the 1xx series usually have 500meg or 1 gig
drives it really doesn't take that long to back up the whole thing to
a desktop CPU even over the printer cable connection.
It's not like you have to sit there and watch it :)

OS 8.1 save RAM disk contents

2002-09-23 Thread Spencer Carter

On my PB 1400, with OS 8.1, I use a RAM disk for Web browser caching and I
noticed that in the Memory control panel I can check a box to have the
contents of the RAM disk saved on shutdown.

We're running OS 8.6 on my wife's Mac and the Memory control panel on it
doesn't allow that RAM disk save option. Seems like a nice feature. Anyone
know why it was left out of OS 8.6?

Re: Best OS for a 1400

2002-09-23 Thread Spencer Carter

I use a 1400cs with a Sonnet G3 card and OS 8.1. Seems to work just fine.

I mostly use IE 5.1 , Eudora and MS Word 98 and rarely have a problem with a
crash or freeze. When I do have a glitch, I run DiskWarrior.

The Sonnet card doesn't seem to like OS 8.6, so I'm sticking with OS 8.1. I
had lots of freezes when I had 8.6 installed on it.

be a 333 512 or 1meg, 400 or 466...is that OS 9.1 is the better of what's
available versus any other OS 8.5, 8.6, or other version of OS 9

I'd try booting it with the battery out, just using the AC adapter.
Perhaps the people who left it on the shelf had it on sleep, and the
battery was completely discharged and died.

My gut feeling would be no. Although the PRAM battery
does cause startup problems which almost religiously
appear when you leave the unit sitting unused for a
few days, these problems generally have symptoms of
teh machine not powering on at all. I haven't seena
PRAM problem cause System Folders to disappear or
flashing Question marks on boot... But I suppose
theres a first time for everythign ;-)

If it were mine, to be safe, I'd probably just change
both at the same time. They are both cheap, and if
I'm going to have the case open, better to open it
once than twice. I'd say you should be able to find
the PRAM battery for >$15 (Wasn't there a thread a few
days ago that said MacResQ has them on clearnece for
just a couple dollars?) and a decent 20gb or even 10gb
hard drive can be had for under $50...

Like Tom said, changing them out is simple and
invloves using your Torx screw driver to remove the
three screws on the bottom of the case holding the
keyboard in and then gently lifting the clips securing
the palm rest down once the keyboard is up. The hard
drive is under there. The PRAM battery is toward the
top side of the case and will involve also removing
the one screw holding down the speaker assembly. All
in all a piece of cake.

Not sure if this is the website with illustrations Tom
mentioned or not, but it does explain how to do it

This is not true. The battery that comes with the 3500
(Li-Ion) is not a higher voltage than the Li-Ion
battery for the 3400. Although, the 3400 can use a
Li-Ion battery or a the NiMH battery for the 5300 and

Old Li-Ion batteries will often show a lower voltage
than new ones. But, you don't specify if your new
batteries are NiMH or Li-Ion. Usually batteries
selling for $19 new are NiMH, but they should say on
them.

No risk, they are OK.

Agreed, doesn't make sense. IIRC, they had high wH ratings, but any Mac
shop will sell you what is a '3400/3500' battery.

AFAIK, the input voltage on PBs is all 24v on the AC. Different models do
have varying input battery voltage ratings, however. The 1400 is around
9.6V, while the 5300/190 run at around 14.4v.

3400s/Kangas can use the NiMH 190/5300 batteries and I'm pretty sure the
3400/3500 also run on 14.4v batteries. The diff is that the 3400 shipped
with a 32Wh battery, while the Kanga had a 47Wh. TiBook now ships with a
55Wh battery, I think. No idea of the battery input voltage.

Cheers,

RD

1400 power problem(?)

2002-09-23 Thread Joost van de Griek

Hello, all.

I'm having a little trouble with my PowerBook 1400C (333 MHz G3, 64 MB RAM,
OS Z1-9.1, internal Ethernet and Zip100).

Unitl about a month ago it was working fine. Since then, it was at a
friend's house, who left it on a shelf, unused, with the battery inserted
but the AC adapter unplugged. When I picked it up and tried to start it, it
just sat there.

When I plug in the original Apple power brick, it doesn't respond at all.
When I try it with the MadsonLine micro-adapter, the speaker pops at a
steady rate, as if it were trying to start up. Sometimes, the screen sort of
flashes, too.

Since I suspected it was a power manager problem due to the batteries
running out, I tried leaving it without power overnight, leaving it without
power with the power key depressed for a day, and all the key combos for
resetting the power manager. Still no go.

So, anyone else have any ideas or suggestions, before I dig up my spare
1400/133 and harvest it for parts?

Actually, I'd recommend v.1.xx of Claris Em@iler. 1x is free, while you
might be able to source 2.0 somewhere. I still use 2.0 in Classic, as
I've _still_ not found a superior mail client (and I've learnt all the kb
commands). Eudora 5 doesn't do it for me.

Emailer 1.0 has a lot of features, can check multiple accounts, and I
think is still the only one that can send mail via AOL mail accounts
(correct me if I'm wrong). It also supports Base64, UUEncode and
AppleDouble encoding, as well as .hqx. You never get ridiculous spam
showing up in the email body, as it's text only (no HTML).

Mail categorization is esp. useful; hit a key combo and prioritize mail
by number and color. A lot of freeware plugins and AppleScripts are out
there too.

I ran it on my Quadra 700 as well (25MHz 040) and it runs on any 68K Mac
from the LC (020) and up.

While not relevant to your PowerBook 500, it also generates far smaller
databases than Entourage, which is bloatware with a lot of features. Just
not space efficient. FWIW, I've never had a corrupted Emailer DB either,
and there's also a tool for archiving older mails into a FileMaker DB.

Pretty sure you'll find v.1.0 for d/l at

Cheers,

RD

Thanks for the great link, Tina.

If you point your browser one directory higher to:

http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/mac.html

there's a great collection of useful links.

BTW: Assuming your signature block was asking a real question, I googled
"geek code" and came up with this link:

http://www.geekcode.com/

Hope it will be of use to you.

3400/3500 battery voltage

2002-09-23 Thread chouston

Just wanted to ask if anyone's using the Li-Ion batteries from the 3500 aka
"Kanga" in a 3400?

I've heard one report of a 3400 owner with a fried PB, who was told by an
Apple tech that he fried his logic board with one of the higher-voltage 3500
batteries.

Didn't seem logical to me, as all the info I've read is that these batteries
are compatible with both the 3400 and 3500.

But I thought I'd ask, because I bought a couple a while back from Powermax,
when they were selling for $19.

I also have two original 3400 batteries, and I've noticed that in charging
the two different types, the app My Battery shows a higher voltage rating on
the 3500 batteries: 16v, compared to max. 14v with the 3400 batteries.

Any risk in using the 3500 batteries? Are those voltage ratings okay?

Thanks for any help.

Chris H

You need an old version of Eudora. Don't remember if it does imap but
should be easy enough to find out.
