Best place to shop for software?
I just got my 3400c from an auction. It is a 180/32mb..I am going to upgrade the memory to the max (144mb right?) and I want to upgrade my hard drive, but I have no system disk... Its running 8.6 now, so thats what I was looking for. Any opinions on the best place to find it? I guess I need the bootable install disk, I am new to Macs, so sorry if I am being clueless.. change 3400 hard drive?
I was thinking of putting a left over hard drive from a Lombard in my old 3400c. Is there any reason why this would not work? Also, I seem to remember reading that it is tricky to change hard drives in a 3400. I have changed drives in my Lombard and Wallstreet and in my old Powerbook 100, but I don't even have the manual for the 3400 anymore. I thought the old manuals were archived at Apple, but I couldn't find it there - just the 'Read Me' file. I wouldn't say it's tricky--it's slightly difficult--and that's only in popping the plastics. Re: change 3400 hard drive?
The drive should work fine, although, I would recommend reinitializing it and reinstalling a fresh copy of the OS after the switch. There are things specific to the other Powerbook that your 3400 won't have/need and there are things your 3400 will need that the old drive won't have. (Onr thing that comes to mind is the Modem/Ethernet Extension for the 3400). The drive swap isn't tricky. I'f you've changed drives before, you won't have any trouble. It's under the palm rest on the left side. Remove the keyboard, pop out any added RAM for freedom of movement, and , the trickiest part, release the clips retaining the palm wrest without breaking any... From that point, it's straightforward, removing screws, unplugging cables... It's obvious. Don't sweat it... dive right in. Cheers, Sionnach __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Re: Best place to shop for software?
You'll probably get your best deal from someplace like ebay on an OS cd... 8.6 is a good choice. If your going to max out the RAM and you have need of features of OS 9, thats an option too. You can pick up an OS CD from somebody like Powerbook Guy or someplace like that if you don't want to fool with the auctions, but you'll end up paying a little more. The CD's are bootable and will have the disk utilities you need. One thing to keep in mind is the difference between getting another Powerbooks restore CD -say an 8.6 CD from a Wallstreet- vs a Full Install CD. I started out with my 3400 installing from a Wallstreet restore CD. 8.6 laid down clean, but I did have to go find the 3400 Modem/Ethernet Extension off Apples website, download it and install it, as that is machine specific and won't install from a restoer CD. If you install from a full CD, you'll be fine and not need to do anything else. Cheers, Sionnach __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Hi Dave, Try the LEM Swap List, which is likely to beat eBay's prices by quite a bit. Interested in a 5300cs?
I just acquired a 5300cs. Posting here prior to Swap-List to gauge interest. How much do I want for it? Don't know. You tell me. I know they aren't worth much. Particulars: PRAM is dead. NiMH also appears dead. Power adapter is ... not dead, and included Screen looks good. Entire case looks good (no rear door). No wear on the trackpad. Screen clutches feel awesome. First PowerBook I've used where the lid doesn't feel like molasses when opening/closing. 8MB RAM, 750MB HD Recent 7.6.1 install. Although I know nothing of it's history, this unit appears to have been through the REA program (first phase) because the serial # ends in AA. -David -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Just today I was testing a 3400 with only the 16MBs onboard and 9.1 booted and ran fine with a full extension set, but a fast HD does help keep the VM from bogging down the PB. I'm running 9.1 on my PPC 540Cs (pretty much the same as a 5300) with 40MBs ram and it runs fast and stable. I've got VM set to around 64MBs and 9.1 uses about 15MBs or so. The 30GB HDs (converted ATA-to-scsi) aren't all that fast on the scsi bus, so that much VM is _not_ slowing down the PBs enough to make them unusable. I'm very pleased with 9.1, as I've mentioned here previously, the much improved PPC codebase feels faster to me than any version of OS 8. Yes, booting takes longer but since PBs are normally slept rather than shut down and restarted I don't feel that's a drawback. Hey, here's a followup question, anyone get 9.2.x running on their 3400? I'd sure like to know the trick, as major improvements were added to the OS with that release. I've used the tools from OS9forever and they didn't work for me . . . Re: Best OS for a 5300cs
I run 8.6 on a 1400/133, it is a snappy little system, although I would prefer it use a little less memory for the system, it is up to about 20 MB. I agree, a G3 would be great, but that would mean paying more for an upgrade card than I did for the whole machine, which is a little overboard, considering it runs what it needs to (Office 98) well. :-) I think the choice of operating system will change from person to person. If you want features over speed go for 9.x if you want speed over features go for 6.0.8 (just kidding :-)). In general, the older the OS, the faster. A good compromise for me is 8.6, but then again, I have a jaguar machine I use as a desktop, so I don't need the features 9 might offer. 8.6 has everything I'd want, like command-tab application switching, contextual menus, HFS+ support, and most 3rd party peripherals seem to want 8.6 as a minimum os. Re: change 3400 hard drive?
The drive swap isn't tricky. I'f you've changed drives before, you won't have any trouble. It's under the palm rest on the left side. Remove the keyboard, pop out any added RAM for freedom of movement, and , the trickiest part, release the clips retaining the palm wrest without breaking any... To remove the palmrest/trackpad without breaking anything, all you need do is remove the keyboard, take out the single screw that secures the speaker grill, lift it out of the way, then remove (pry up) the left and the right clutch covers (hinge covers). Now you can remove the palmrest with no danger of breaking any plastics. Nothing is tricky if the proper procedure is applied. Greg __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Different versions of OS 8.6
Does anyone know if the full install iMac OS 8.6 disc will install on my 3400c? I know the restore disc won't work.. but the full install? -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Best place to shop for software?
You can probably find an OEM version of 8.6 at the LEM Swap list, through this same list group or on eBay. Don't get a model specific version (I.E. the version that shipped with an iBook or iMac, etc.) as they are designed to install on that specific model only. There are some hacks available that are supposed to allow their use, but I've never been able to make one work. The full install version is the best and will cost about the same as a model specific version most of the time. Max RAM is 144 Meg as you thought. The hard drive is an ATA (IDE) 2 1/2 wide and 12.5 mm thick or less. I like the thin ones, (9.5mm) better as they leave more space between the drive and keyboard for cooling. http://www.otherworldcomputing.com has some new 20 Gig drives for about $100, 30 Gig for about $120 and 40 Gig for about $140. When you put in the larger drive, you can partition it to allow separate partitions for each system and (if you plan on using it for internet access) I like to use a small separate partition for my internet connection apps. They fragment often and are much easier to keep in good shape if on their own partition. David Allen David Marshall wrote: I just got my 3400c from an auction. I am going to try to get at least a 20gb drive so that I can have both OS 8.6 and Linux... any pointers will be welcomed.. Thanks, Dave -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OS 8.6 and 1400c
Hello, I've been looking at some older Macs with older operating systems, and these leaner meaner things seem to work much faster than OS 8.6 does on my stock 133mHz PB 1400c. I've always felt like its slow as molasses in January. It takes forever to load anything, and occasionally stalls completely for 20 seconds or so. When it's online, sometimes it goes way longer than that, making me think it's locked up (or almost ready to). All the dynamic memory software is slow, too. Click a button and _wait_ for something to happen. Sometimes even the delete key bogs down. I have shut off all the extensions I can live without. I use OS 8.6 because it's really the oldest OS that will still run most modern software, like Explorer 5.1, PhotoShop 6.0, etc. I'm wondering if I'm the only one with this problem. What say ye? Re: OS 8.6 and 1400c
I'm running a PB1400c/133 with OS 8.6, and for me, it's quite zippy. I don't use Photoshop or anything like that, and I try to stick to the most ancient programs I can live with. Generally, I find that using programs made at about the same time as the computer (ie, 1997ish) will work best as far as speed is concerned. Internet is a little hard to use old software with, but perhaps try and source an older version of Photoshop? I used to use Photoshop 4.0 on a 7200/120, which, whilst not brilliantly fast, was acceptable. (of course, I don't do much with it, just a bit of playing. I have it, because it came with the scanner :-) I sometimes get the pause thing you described, not only with the Powerbook, but also on a 5500/225 running 8.6. As far as I can tell, it is doing something or other with the network connections. The solution that worked for me (on the powerbook) was to use location manager to disable TCP/IP and AppleTalk when I didn't need them. If it tries to connect, and there is nothing to connect to, it does that pause thing. (When I had it on the 5500 it was just because I borrowed the Ethernet cable for something.) Also, if you have any servers set to 'connect at start-up' the machine spends what seems like an eternity looking for them. Hope some of this helps :-) John.
