Bugbear virus and LEM lists

2003-03-10 Thread Dan Knight
A former member of the PCI PowerMacs list was alerted to the presence of
a virus on a message purportedly sent from pci-powermacs. He emailed the
following:

>This morning I received an email (apparantly) from
>><[EMAIL PROTECTED]
>
>Our virus scanning software, carefully updated by our professional
>paranoids, alerted me to the fact that it contained a bugbear a virus in
>an attachment (filename cotter.dat.scr)
>
>The email message itself seems real enough, until you look at the dates;
>look at the bottom of this mail.

A little research on the bugbear virus turns up the following:

1. It installs itself in the Startup folder of any version of Windows
later than 3.1.

2. It attempts to use any SMTP (email sending) resources on the infected
computer to create mass mailings.

3. It attempts to install itself on other computers on the network.

4. It attempts to create a backdoor on the infected computer that the
worm's creator could use to access the computer in the future.

5. It will send emails from "safe looking" bogus email addresses (such as
[EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of @maclaunch.com) to addresses it
finds. It also seems to quote part of an email from that user ID to make
the message look more authentic.

You may be tipped off by a strange date, an unusual return address, or
your virus checker going off (Windows users should always run virus
checking -- users with other operating systems cannot be infected by this
and most other viruses).

These messages are not from our lists or our server; the bugbear worm can
only be propagated by Windows computers. However, at first glance they
may appear to come from us, so Windows users should be careful when
checking list messages.

And we can all wonder when Microsoft is going to get serious about secure
computing. The level of insecurity that gave birth to tens of thousands
of worms and viruses in simply unacceptable, yet over 90% of all computer
users take it in stride as something normal they have to deal with.

Thank goodness we only use Macs for production and *nix servers for our
site and mailing lists.

LOL ;-P

Yes... we all dream... but I know we also still all love our dear little
5300/1400/290/180/170/100 machines... ;-) I admit it, I drag out the 170 every
now and again just to say "hi" and type a little on that
keyboard...

I saw, while in transit thru the student union a few days ago, this sweet-looking
*tiny* little Mac laptop with yes, a backlit keyboard (or glow in the dark or
something "hip" about its vibe) and I asked the young man behind
the counter a little about the machine...

...coming away from that short conversation I knew it was just a little G3, maybe it
had twice the RAM I do, but big deal...

One of our 1400cs machines took a spectacular fall a few weeks ago, a heartwrenching 5
foot curving plummet onto a concrete floor that we only heard, not saw (thank the
cats) and -- no damage. None.

Amazing.

Well, that makes sense. Speed Doubler doesn't do much for 68k macs
(ok, it does make an attempt at multithreading - like emptying the
trash can in the background, copying files in the background, etc. I
guess it also has that "smart copy" feature...). It's biggest
benefit is for low end PowerPC Macs. Speed Doubler has a more
efficient 68040 emulation routine than earlier PowerPCs/System 7/OS
8.1. System 7 and OS 8.0/1, I believe, emulate a 68020 (for
compatibility) on PowerPC. And they do it inefficiently. Installing
Speed Doubler on something like a 61xx, 71x0, 81x0, 62xx, 6300,
LC52xx, LC53xx, 5300, 1400, or 2300 should increase the speed of 68k
apps when running System 7.x or OS 8 prior to 8.5. Some say that the
difference is dramatic.

I can't see any reason why you need to run Speed Doubler on a IIci.
Unless, of course, you like painstakingly slow file copies.

OS 8.5 has an updated 68k emulator that implements a 68LC040 (IIRC)
and is far faster than it's predecessors. On macs with this OS, the
benefit of Speed Doubler is essentially nil.

In any case, your OS choice is as subjective as your choice of
favorite color. It's no surprise that system 7.6.1 is faster than OS
8.5. I choose 8.6 because I can live with the relatively slower boot
times, app launch times, and certain finder operations. OTOH, I find
myself MUCH more happy with a multithreaded operating system, pretty
icons, menu clicks that you don't have to hold down, pop-up windows,
spring loaded folders, Apple-Delete trashing of files, and the
ability to run modern applications. OTOOH, I don't go to OS 9
because I'm happy with the 8.6 feature set and don't want the added
speed hit that OS 9 would bring. So, picking an OS is like picking a
toothbrush ;-) Get the one that does the job and feels best.
Whether it's a new-fangled "sonic" toothbrush or one made of wood, it
still cleans your teeth. Or something. I'm tired... ;-)

Peace,
Drew

Never having done this, I'll trust your experience...myself, I would
have thought they simply wouldn't work at all (due to 2 ID 7's on the bus)

Also, a regular SCSI cable would have to go through a gender changer to

Bootable CDs and CD drives

This is one of those persistant misunderstandings relating to Apple's
closed CD driver. Whether Apple's CD driver may or may not work with your
third party CD drive is almost entirely irrelevant when booting from a
bootable CD.

Definitions:
CD - the shiny disk itself, including commercial 'stamped' CDs,
  and CD-R and RWs
CD reader or drive - the box plugged somehow into your Mac
that spins and reads the CD
CD driver - the software the Mac uses to access the CD reader
hardware
and the information on the CD itself

A CD is not bootable unless it has a disk driver written to its
bootblocks, an area of the CD which nearly all CD drives can read before
any driver has loaded. The driver in the CD's bootblocks is not visible
on the CD itself but _is_ there (else the CD wouldn't be bootable.) This
driver is almost totally make-model-ROM agnostic. It doesn't care if the
CD drive is an Apple mechanism or not, but will load and boot from most
any CD reader. The few times I've been unable to boot from a CD mechanism
have all been caused by problems other than the CD drive's
make-model-"ROM"s, including defective drives, bad cabling, scsi ID and
term problems, incompatible CD-R media etc.

The CD's driver is not the driver inside a bootable CDs System Folder,
it's located in the CD's bootblocks and doesn't care a whit if Apple's
"ROM"s are present in the reader's hardware or not.

If one is unable to boot from a known-good bootable CD, the chances are
extremely good the problem is _not_ the make, model or "ROM"s of the CD
drive. To boot from a _known_good_bootable_ CD (some already mentioned by
others):

* hold down the "C" key immediately after startup chimes. Implimented in
most
models from the LC III onward, the Mac tries to boot from the
default CD device
address. In Macs which shipped with scsi CD drives the default
address is
scsi bus 0: ID 3, Macs with atapi CD drives boot from ATA bus 1:
master (IIRC).

As noted, atypically for Macs of its era, the PB1400 cannot be
booted from
its internal CD drive using the "C" key, why this is so I'd like to
know. I wonder
if it will boot from an external scsi CD at ID3? I'll have to test
this sometime . . .

* hold down cmd-option-shift-delete, which forces the Mac to
disregard the previously chosen boot _device_ (NOT volume) and
search for other
bootable devices. However if bootable disks or devices other than
the CD drive are
present the Mac may boot from one of those before it finds the CD.

* Physically disconnect any other devices, bootable and otherwise,
usually not easy on a PB, but as
with all troubleshooting, the simpler the configuration the easier
the TSing.

* Ensure the CD reader is actually functional, including the cabling,
jumper settings (ID or master/slave), and termination (if scsi).
It's surprisingly easy to overlook this basic troubleshooting step.

* Some CD readers have trouble reading some CD-R or (RW) media
brands and/or types, so knowing a CD-R will boot one Mac
does not ensure it will boot in any Mac's CD reader. Generally
however
if the CD-R _media_ is readable in the suspect configuration, it
will be
bootable as well (assuming it's been correctly made.)

Any questions?

Dan K

PB 5300cs Questions?

2003-03-10 Thread Jason White
Hi all,

I just installed a 32M RAM module into my 5300cs (had a 16M module
before) and wanted to do some more stuff to it.

I currently have OS 7.6.1 on it. I have OS 8 (and the 8.1 updater), but
was wondering if it would be wise to update. The machine currently has
48M in it, with the stock 770M HD. Pretty much all I use it for is Office
98, and a few games.

Also, I have Speed Doubler 1.32 (?) on it now. If I upgraded to 8, would
this program still work, or would I have to find a newer version? It made
a noticeable difference with 7.6.1.

And finally, when I first installed the 16M card about a year ago, I
realized one of the keyboard screws (the three on the bottom of the case)
was stripped, and decided not to replace it after the trouble I had
getting it out. Does anyone know what what type of screw this is
(diameter and thread) so I may be able to buy a new one at my local
hardware store? Or does anyone know where I could buy one (or even all
three if I had to)? The one place I saw that had them had a $25 minimum
order and the screws were only a buck or two. I tried a wanted to buy on
the swaplist, but got no replies.

Thanks,

J White

I don't know about speed doubler, but 8.1 will be a bit slower, but,
imo, much more reliable and usable than 7.6.1, given that this is a PPC
system.

I have 8.6 running on one right now, and it's quite usable; I'd had 9.1
on it and it was horribly slow, but that could well have been because
the HD was flaky...when I tried to re-format it, it wouldn't, and when I
looked at it in Drive setup it had three partitions where there had only
been one before

Replaced the drive and it's much better. before it would take 45 seconds
to a minute to start up programs. Much faster now.

PB 1400 screen (looking for)

2003-03-10 Thread Richard Skipp
Hi All,

I'm searching for a new screen for my PB 1400c. The original was active
matrix. I'd prefer another one like it of course, But the passive matrix
will do fine.

I'm up in Canada if that matters. Anybody know of any good deals around?

Thanks,

Richard

Almost. Command-Option-Shift-Delete is the one you're looking for.

I just resubscribed to this list and didn't catch any of this thread, but
from what I read here it may be something I'm interested in as well.

I'm thinking of upgrading my OS on my 5300cs from 7.6.1 to 8.1. Can I put
the 8.1 install on en external HD and boot from it to see how I like it
before I install it on the internal HD? Is the SCSI bus roughly the same
speed as the internal IDE(?) bus? If it matters the drive will probably
be a 1.2G Quantum pulled from an 8500.

Thanks,

J White

Re: PB520 line-in port

2003-03-10 Thread Tom kW.
To record voice into a PB520 (from a microphone), do I need to run a
line-out from a tapedeck to the line-in of the 520, or does any kind of
microphone work directly plugged into the port? My Apple microphone does not
seem to work when plugged in here.
Thanks
Tom

floppy drive for 1400

2003-03-10 Thread J . Wrobel

Does anyone know where to get a decent (cheap) 3.5 floppy disk drive
for a PB 1400c? The replacement with exchange for the built in is $89.
External USBs are about $40, but I don't know if they make a drive
that can plug into the back of a PB (SCSI 30 pin or ADB or something
to make a USB port). Is there a cheap USB adapter for the PC card slot
or something? HELP!

Thanks!
Jeff

Drivers for EtherMac PB Adapter on PB 140

2003-03-10 Thread Frost Back
Hi. I'm trying to set up a PowerBook 140. I've had no
luck getting an Asante Mini EN/SC to work, but at
least I fournd drivers. I'm now trying to get a
Farallon EtherMac Mac/PB Adapter, part number
PN550C-ADB to work instead. However, there appear to
be no drivers for it available on the web. I've
checked Farallon's site, which is now owned by
Proxima, and they no longer have any old Mac software
drivers available. And all the download links I find
on the web point to ftp.farallon.com, which no longer
exists. I was hoping someone could let me know where I
might find the file "AdapterSetup2.2.hqx" which
appears to be the appropriate driver software.

You need no driver, use the MacIP setting in the Network CP and the
adapter does the converting to TCP/IP. IIRC, you'll need to set the IP
manually when using MacIP (been awhile since I last used it.)

I've got a couple of these and they work dandy, though speed is of course
limited to the serial port's slow pace. They're also a great solution for
adding older AT printers such as LaserWriters to an ethernet network.

If you can, install the drivers for the EN/SC, as that device is much
faster than any serial port solution. Note that you must use the
installer, it places a resource into your System file.

hth,

Dan K

Re: floppy drive for 1400

2003-03-10 Thread David Allen
Also ask on the LEM Swap list.

There are no options for USB on the 1400. (unfortunately) The USB cards
all require a newer version PCMCIA than is available on the 1400.

On occasion a deal can be had, but 1400s are such good little machines
that many horde their parts "just in case" they find another 1400.

I'm up to 2 now, fully set up except they are "cs" versions. (I even have
an original Apple Presentation System for each of them.) One day I'll find
some "c" screens really cheap and the upgrading will be complete. (of
course then I'll need some 1400s with bad screens so that the "cs" screens
get used and then it will start all over again. But, honestly doc, I'm
not addicted!!?)
