Definitely get more memory. Running 8.6 on a 3400 on 16 megs of real RAM is
a waste, the poor thing must be slower than a 5300. It is eminently capable
of surfing the Internet with a full complement of RAM.

As for the browser, Cyberdog works, but it's pretty outdated now, and rather
slow on top of that. You really want to make your browsing fast, there's
only one answer--iCab. It's the only browser I'll use under the classic
MacOS. I have Nutscrape on my 3400, but only because I couldn't get a
certain plug-in to install without a so-called "mainstream browser"
installed. I've never used it.

Wi-Fi on PB 500s (was Re: PowerBook 5300 FAQ updated...)

Hi, Howard. Please forgive my tardy response as I'm a bit behind in some
of my email.

Yeah, I've got some experience. I've got a PB 540c running OS 8.1 and a
Rev C PCMCIA module. I've been using a MacWireless card (802.11b or
"Wi-Fi") since Christmas with great success, in fact, I used it at the
Apple Store over the weekend to download my email while my wife was over
at Nordstrom's. I currently have the processor upgraded to the PPC
version, but it worked just fine earlier this year with the '040
processor before I installed the upgrade in June. I've only had to
contact their support once and they cleared my problem up completely by
return email.

I can't speak for the Lucent/Agere cards but I'm pretty sure that the
Apple AirPort card is not usable in our machines (it doesn't exactly fit
into a PCMCIA slot, as I understand it).

Hope this helps.

Tyler

Update on LEM finances

2003-08-25 Thread Dan Knight
The Mac community has been more than generous in its support of Low End
Mac. In ten days, we have lined up a buyer for our TiBook, have some
promising leads for selling our two 333 MHz Rev. D iMacs, and have
received donations covering over $5,000 of our roughly $6,000 debt load.

For the first time in a couple years, my paychecks cover a week in the
same month that they're cut. I've gone from being 3 months behind on
payroll to three weeks. I'll finish catching up in September to help
equalize the tax liabilities on all that payroll.

We have received approximately $3,000 via PayPal, over $1,200 through the
mail, a little more than $1,000 through the Amazon Honor System, and
about $500 in payment for lemlists and lowendmac.net email accounts. We
also have about $400 donated through Kagi, but it will be some time
before those funds actually reach us.

Last week we had a plumbing emergency -- a leak collapsed a bedroom
ceiling. This money couldn't have come at a better time. We have a $250
deductible and have to pay the cost of fixing the cause of the problem.
Insurance will cover the rest.

We have a contractor working up an estimate for painting our chimney and
repairing our broken cement. Hoping that won't be too costly. The screen
door I should be able to replace myself. And the roof will have to wait
until we find out whether our refinancing has gone through.

I set up and sold over a dozen LC 630 systems at $30 each through our
garage sale over the weekend. Nice machines with 12 MB RAM, System 7.5.5,
a 14" monitor, choice of a compact or extended keyboard, tested drives
(floppy, hard, and CD-ROM). And some nice freeware, shareware, and
abandoned games. Funny thing is, I got these from a school that was going
to pay someone to haul them away -- and a lot of them are going into
classrooms because teachers are buying them so their students can work on
their keyboarding skills.

I'll be ordering copies of ClarisWorks 3.0 for some of these people --
just $1 through Shreve Systems -- so they have something better than
SimpleText to work with.

I remain overwhelmed at the generosity of the Mac community. I send out
lots of thank you emails each day, and twice I've gone to the bank with
huge stacks of checks.

We have added a new option to our support page, because several people
asked us to. It's now possible to automatically make a monthly donation
through PayPal.

As always, thank you for your support of Low End Mac.

OS <= 7.6, it's probably a good idea, since it's a better VM than VM.
With 8 it's roughly a draw, and with 8.5+ it's useless, as Apple's VM is
much improved by then.

how much ram is enough for 8.6 on a 3400

2003-08-25 Thread Han
IMHO, you won't need to completely max out the ram to
get dramatic improvements even in 8.6 (unless you are
doing something really intensive.) our 3400/180 runs
on 48 and it handles word processing apps and online
tasks pretty well. Our 3400/200 has 80, I do image
processing, webdesign and go online with it, as well
as play with a few diversion programs. Now, we do use
ram doubler. YMMV, but I haven't been hungering after
ram since we installed 64 in the 3400/200.

About online speed -- get a good 56k pc modem card and
make sure you have an effective modem script for it.
I get 5bps pretty regularly on either 3400 on a pc
card modem with a v.90 script. This blows the doors
off my 56k desktop modems which rarely get much over
4. I thought it was just my phone lines, but
apparently not. I am not using Modem Magic, btw, and
I've been curious about whether that might help boost
the desktops' bps since I've seen such nice speeds
from the powerbooks using the same phone lines.

ibook yo yo adapter on a 2400? 3400?

2003-08-25 Thread Han
I was just reading a page about the 2400 when I
noticed that a suggested replacement for the hard to
find 2400 power adapter is the yo yo shaped 45w ibook
adapter. I checked this item out at the apple store
online, and noted that it says it is also for "older
g3 powerbooks. This adapter features dual voltage
(100 - 240) and will charge lion batteries while on,
off or asleep.

Since I have seen one of our 3400's powered by an
original 2400 adapter (albeit a bit underpowered, when
I put it under a real 3400 adapter I got the lightning
bolt charging icon and everything. But the 2400
charger did charge the battery...) I realize there is
some flexibility here.

I looked at the back of the 3400 adapter, it says "45w
input ac100-240 output 24v, am I wrong in thinking
this little ibook adapter might be an acceptable
replacement for at 3400?

Does anyone on the list use a power adapter not
originally designed to be used with their particular powerbook?

I think I can safely say that no, the PB 1400 has no DVD capabilities- much to my own

think that the PB 1400 can be upgraded to accomodate one feasibly.

On my still-being tested 3400 (thx for your patience),
I did a clean 8.1 install, and the 2.9.5 version
worked fine. Then some extensions were moved around

Also, has anybody chosen from the menu "make iCab

Re: how much ram is enough for 8.6 on a 3400

2003-08-25 Thread Vic Duong

I conquer with the person below. 48 MB RAM is plenty for basic use in 8.6.

However, maxing the 3400 in RAM is only $80 or so at OWC. So if you can
afford it, go for it. If not, I was still able to do tons to work w/ 48 ram
when I had my 3400.

Good luck, and let us know what you ended up with!
