Re: PB140 RAM upgrade

I have 32-bit addresssing enabled, but as far as a 4MB RAM stick, I
didn't see one that PowerBookGuy was selling. He only has a 6MB RAM
stick for the PB140/145/170.

 Hello,
When trying to send an email message I get an Open Transport error

Thanks.

IMHO, there's two advantages that I've found of the 3400 over a G3-based
1400: it takes more RAM (up to 144MB), and it's at least somewhat
Cardbus-capable (see

http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Cardbus/Cardbus.html

). On the other hand, a G3-based 1400 (especially a 333MHz+ one) would
probably eat the 3400 for lunch w/r/t raw performance, even factoring in
the 3400's 40MHz bus speed. It would be interesting to see the numbers.

Thoughts on presentation options for PB 1400

2004-03-20 Thread Bill Wilson
I have a conference workshop to run in a few months and I want to
incorporate my 1400 by showing some web site examples on-screen to
the audience...and perhaps a Powerpoint presentation as well.

My 1400 is running 8.6, has a 217 mhz G3, is maxed at 64MB RAM -- 192
with Ram Doubler -- and sports the VIEWpowr vid card for video out.
I've only used a conventional external monitor in the past, and
that's always been a snap, but I have no clue what to look for in
terms of a projector. Other than a standard VGA connector, is there
anything in particular I should look for -- or look OUT for?

Thanks,
Bill

> with only 4MB to make 8MB, or will it just not work at all? Thanks.

Two things: First, you need to enable 32-bit addressing in the memory control panel.
Then your OS will be able to recognize more than 8MB, allowing virtual memory to do
more. Currently, your VM isn't contributing more than 4MB worth of virtual goodness
because you are still in 24-bit mode. I have a PB150 with only 4MB, but with 16MB of
VM, Expander runs just fine (but slowwwly).

Next, why not buy a 4MB ram stick instead? It would likely be cheaper than a 6MB. I
don't know for sure that you would have trouble with a 6MB stick on a 145b, but you
don't want to find out the hard/expensive way whether the onboard ram has some
conflict with part of the added ram. [That said, I don't believe that there is a
problem; 2MB of that 6MB will not be enabled, so your total will end up being 8MB.
That's my best guess, anyway.]

Tom

Yes. You need the 9.2 Startup Disk control panel (I think Apple has it
available as a download). This is well known with G3 upgrades (mine did
it too).

Re: 190 OS8 blues

Yeah, it's not exactly intuitive. The rub is that the system folder on
the CD-ROM that is used to boot the Mac isn't the same system folder that
gets installed onto the Mac with the installer. The one that gets
installed is compressed into an installer archive or "tome" that the
installer reads, decompresses individual pieces from, and installs them to
the host Mac.
That makes sense. Linux installs do a similar stunt. A Debian boot floppy
gets you enough of a generic system to run the CD and/or TCP/IP over the
Ethernet jack, so you can do the install over the 'Net from any archive site.

Re: 190 OS8 blues

FWIW, any Mac OS 8 installer CD (regardless of whether it is
machine specific or not) ought to boot a Mac OS 8 compatible
computer.
That's the hard part for me to grasp. But if I accept the
restriction is artificial, and in the installer, then it makes sense.
Yeah, it's not exactly intuitive. The rub is that the system folder
on the CD-ROM that is used to boot the Mac isn't the same system
folder that gets installed onto the Mac with the installer. The one
that gets installed is compressed into an installer archive or "tome"
that the installer reads, decompresses individual pieces from, and
installs them to the host Mac.

I could definitely be wrong here (and someone will no doubt correct
me if so), but I believe that Apple has one OS 8.0 CD-ROM system
folder that it puts on all it's OS 8.0 installer boot disks (ditto
for 8.1, 8.5, 8.6, 9.0, etc). That CD-ROM specific system folder
ought to boot any Mac that can run that version of the OS, regardless
of whether or not the installer is targeted at that Mac. It's a
handy thing to know, since you can use the Drive Setup and Disk First
Aid on those CDs in a pinch when you've got non-booting hard drive
issues and no diagnostic CDs on hand...

Strange, eh?

Peace,

Re: 190 OS8 blues

2004-03-20 Thread lesher

OS 8 can be installed as a full "FAT" version that will run on any
supported machine (68k or PPC) and include all the extra bits and pieces
that could possibly be needed by any machine, it can be installed as a
"core" OS that contains only the bare essentials needed to run on any Mac,
or as a "machine specific" installation that will only run on the target
Mac (or other very similar Macs). So in that sense, an install of a
certain PPC Mac specific version (say, targeted at a Bondi iMac) may not
work on a 68k Mac... But I don't think that's what you're getting at...
Well it is, since I'd guess that's where this CD came from. Actually it may
have come from a Beige G3. We got/had lots of boxi around here. I found an
AppleII serial cable last year...

Apple got into the habit around that time of releasing machine-specific
OEM disks for Mac OS that will only install on the machine class they
shipped with.
..
Apple wants people to go out and by a shiny new copy of the retail CD. :-/
Assuming they want to sell me one.

On the other hand, besides iMac CDs, I don't believe that there are any
Mac OS 8.0 or 8.1 OEM CDs that won't install on any Mac that can run OS
8.0 (68040s and newer). My beige G3 OEM Mac OS 8.1 CD will install OS 8.1
on any Mac that can run OS 8.1. I never actually read the readme, so I
don't know if it says it won't work on Macs other than G3s...
I'll look Monday and see exactly what this CD says - I do not recall
exactly. But it looks like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3085744473&category=11231
not:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3085029308&category=11231

The 190 can certainly run OS 8, however. If you want to be completely
legal, you can only use that OEM CD to install OS 8 on one Mac. If the
original Mac no longer has OS 8 on it, go crazy and try to install it on
your 190.
I can attest to the fact no machine in the shop still runs OS8.anything

Re: 190 OS8 blues

Are there two different versions of OS8? One that runs on 68K and
another that runs on G3's?

Or is the CD README just hype to encourage me to run out and order a
new OS8 CD for an old machine...?
Yes, and yes.

OS 8 can be installed as a full "FAT" version that will run on any
supported machine (68k or PPC) and include all the extra bits and
pieces that could possibly be needed by any machine, it can be
installed as a "core" OS that contains only the bare essentials

So in that sense, an install of a certain PPC Mac specific version
(say, targeted at a Bondi iMac) may not work on a 68k Mac... But I
don't think that's what you're getting at...

Apple got into the habit around that time of releasing
machine-specific OEM disks for Mac OS that will only install on the
machine class they shipped with. iMac CDs are particularly notable
as not being able to install the Mac OS on anything but another iMac.
Certain B&W G3, iBook, and G4 CDs have similar restrictions.

I don't know if that's because the installer's archive contains ONLY
machine specific portions of the OS (this is true for ALL machine
specific Mac OS 9.0.2 and 9.0.3 CDs, for example, but somehow I doubt
Apple would go to the trouble of stripping down a standard OS 8.1
installer and removing all but machine specific parts), or if the
installer script is just artificially restricted to prevent it from
installing on anything that doesn't have a certain machine gestalt
ID. Either way, it would be tough for a novice to defeat the
installer and make it work on unsupported Macs.

I'm pretty sure that this restriction was put in place to prevent
people from reselling their OEM CDs (I think this is against the
license - you know, the one no one ever pays attention to, including
myself - I always just skip right over it). Apple wants people to go
out and by a shiny new copy of the retail CD. :-/

On the other hand, besides iMac CDs, I don't believe that there are
any Mac OS 8.0 or 8.1 OEM CDs that won't install on any Mac that can
run OS 8.0 (68040s and newer). My beige G3 OEM Mac OS 8.1 CD will
install OS 8.1 on any Mac that can run OS 8.1. I never actually read
the readme, so I don't know if it says it won't work on Macs other
than G3s...

The 190 can certainly run OS 8, however. If you want to be
completely legal, you can only use that OEM CD to install OS 8 on one
Mac. If the original Mac no longer has OS 8 on it, go crazy and try
to install it on your 190. To be otherwise legal, you'll need to
either buy a 2nd CD or new license. *shrug* Apple is less draconian
in this regard than MS, but it's always good to make sure you promote
the law when posting in a public forum like this! ;-)

FWIW, any Mac OS 8 installer CD (regardless of whether it is machine
specific or not) ought to boot a Mac OS 8 compatible computer.

Sorry for being long-winded.

Peace,
Drew

I've had a PB 170, 5300 and a 1400 is my latest.
I liked the 170, however it stopped working some time ago when i lent it to a friend
so he could write a paper for a class. Obviously he broke it somehow. The 5300 was
nice, but it always seemed apt to breaking.
The 1400, on the other hand, has been almost a dream machine. Extremely easy to
upgrade- more so than any desktop Ive ever had. I think it only took me a hadful of
minutes to change the processor in it.It lacks some of the more recent hardware I'd
like it to have, but I have used it on the web and for email quite a bit. Explorer
does a decent job, but I've been considering icab. All in all, I'll have to go with
the 1400because of its sturdy design, ease of upgrading and reliability.

My favorite PowerBook

Well, I have a PB 1400 and a PB 170. I like the PB 170 best. Programs, batteries and
parts are inexpensive. So I'm not
worried if my son steps on it or it gets lost. The case is tough. I prefer the
trackball over the touch pads. More mouse like.

Basic and simple. Problems and glitches are easier to figure out.

Re: Old PC games and virtual PC 3...

2004-03-20 Thread Eric
I ran King's Quest 6 on my 486 33MHz with 8MB RAM. Just run DOS 6.something as the
OS, and you should be fine. I think. I have no personal experience with VPC3, but
lots with DOS. If you need any help setting up things like a mouse or CDROM under
DOS, I can help. Good luck.

The problem must be conflict or perhaps even
"powerbook specific" since I too have been unable to
install any flavor of Limewire on my 3400, but have
had success with machines as old as a 950 on 8.5 and a
7200 Wintel Houdini machine, as well as my 9.1 OS 7600
with a Sonnet G4 upgrade. Each of the desktops works
as well with the bloated software as it can be
expected to, but nothing I do has allowed the 3400 to
get past a dead point in the install. The screen will
freez and simply waite for you till the cows come
home.

Greetings.
That "crucial bit of Java" you mentioned must be OS 9 or better. ;-)
My daughters have run LimeWire successfully in OS 9 and OS X -
To my utter dismay ;-)

Best regards,
Dana

Re: 190 OS8 blues

2004-03-20 Thread Donna Hood Pointer
WHAT VERSION does it say it is?
Just because it will "boot the box" doesn't mean you can install the
software there. Booting simply involves telling the chip ROMs to go
through their builtin routines to checkout the hardware, etc., and
bring up the desktop. Likewise, you could probably take a system 7 disk
1 disk Tools diskette and boot up that machine. Maybe even a system 9
CD. Obviously the software you have is G3 only--which figures, since it
came with a G3 machine. There is probably not any of the 68040
emulation coding on there. They pare that stuff out of the later
versions of the system. To run on both PPC and 68040 or lower machines,
you have to have "FAT" coding. system 8.0 and 8.1 will run on both, and
the box says so.

Fat coding takes up room and is wasting ROM with coding taking up space
if the machine doesn't need that type of coding. So what you have is
system 8 specific to G3s with the 68040 coding pared away. The chips
are different. Without the 040 code that won't run on your machine;
therefore Apple saves you from yourself and does not let it even try to
install. In older machines, there were programs such as "wannabe" to
try to fool the installers into thinking you had a different machine,
or soft FPU to make it think you had an fpu. . that is res edit stuff.
Once you change chips there are different issues. My suspicion is that
you have 8.5 or 8.6, not 8.0 or 8.1. Doesn't it tell you?

Why don't you try mac.res.q or one of the other places like that to see
if they still have the system you need for the computer you are trying
to run it on? I know it is expensive to buy older systems. The more
scarce they are the more they seem to cost. I thought it was outrageous
that I had to pay $79 to get that CD when it wasn't even the current
system. I don't want to part with mine, because that is the highest
system I can run on my PB520, and I may want to put that on there
someday. I'm a firm believer in keeping original program disks. One
never knows when a computer harddrive may give up the ghost.

I think 8.5 REQUIRED PPC which I have on the 5300 with 40MB RAM. Do
you have original general system 8.1 or 8.0 CD or are you using some
system 8 install CD that came with some other kind of Mac originally
and trying to install on a PB? That might be your problem. If you
have a general original install CD it will check your computer to see
what it needs to install.

I have no original media from the machine. The OS8.0 CD in question
came with a G3 ("It says G3 System Software" or such on it...} so the
question is, is it honestly a different OS8 for G3's than for 68040's,
and if so, then why'd it boot the box?

Re: OT: My favorite PowerBook

2004-03-20 Thread The Calypso Organization
We upgrade and generally mess around with donated machines with a view to
redistributing them so we get a chance to try out almost everything in the
older Powerbook ranges.
I gave up on Duos - just do not like them for no very good reason.
We got an old PB530 which we then played around with - incorporated a
PowerPC upgrade card - maxd out its RAM (still low though) - got a IDE to
SCSI drive converter and fitted a 4gb HD and its great except for the
continual problem of batteries Havnt found a source of a NEW fully
viable battery yet at a reasonable rate.
Liked this machine a lot till I got a 5300 - also maxd this ones RAM at
great expense - fitted a 4gb HD and OS 9.
The only mistake was OS9 - should have stuck to 8.5 or 8.6! Also got a Zip
drive for its floppy bay - VERY useful as all our desktops are Zip equipped
too.

So, all in all its the 5300c for me.

What program are you having problems with? All of
them?

On my 3400 I notice that if I use Pagemill and don't
switch to Source mode when typing a large amount the
lag is horrible. Also AIM seems to sometimes lag a
bit when in a chat room though not in IM windows for
some reason.

But for instance right now I'm using Yahoo Mail to
write this in iCab and it keeps up with the 50 or so
words a minute that I type without a problem.

Many times the amount of VRAM your machine has and
what other programs are using the RAM can slow down
the scrolling speed of windows. On my wife's Bondi
when we had Jaguar on it, the scrolling would slow
down when she had this little macro program open
called Youpi Key turning it off doubled the scroll
rate. So if you have any macro programs running in
the background you might try turning them off.

No, the connection is much more likely to be an "either it works or it
doesn't (or it works intermittently)" kind of thing. Typing lag is
pretty much always software-related. Give us more to go on... OS
version. What s/w are you using at the time? Does this only happen
when you're online? That sort of thing...

I think the 3400 is a better choice for "Todays"
Internet in terms of value per dollar.

lowend iBooks go for around $350-500 which is also
what you'd end up shelling out to pump up a 1400.

I bought a 3400 for $152 on Ebay that had 144 Megs of
RAM, a 6 gig hard drive, CDROM, built in ethernet,
1000's of colors at 600x800.

Using iCab 2.9.7 with the preferences set to emulate
IE 5.5 for Javascript and to identify itself as
Mozilla 4.5 I can surf all the modern sites without
problems so far and it works just about as well as
Safari 1.2 on my wife's Bondi iMac running Panther.

With iPods being all the rage right now I look at it
as I got a 6 gig iPod that I can surf the web,
communicate with AIM, play older games, and explore
my artsy side using my older versions of Photoshop,
Illustrator and Freehand all for less than half the
price of the cheapest iPod. Of course the iPod
battery lasts longer but I can bring my 3400 to work
and plug it into the stereo and not have to listen to
radio commercials all day long.

I agree. You get much better deals at the initial
purchase. I had toyed around with parting out my 3400
when I got it since from the parts I would have enough
to buy a lowend iBook but then after using the lil
sucker I didn't want the iBook anymore. I've got a
iBook 800 that I use at work and I dread bringing it
home since all my work stuff will be on the desktop
staring at me. My trusty lil 3400 has no work stuff
on it and does everything I need a computer to do very
well. Its going to be part of the family for a long
time.

RAM Upgrades

2004-03-20 Thread Joe
My PowerBook 145b has 4MB of RAM currently, and I'm using 5MB of virtual
memory on the hard drive, but I get a lot of insufficient memory errors,
and I end up having to reboot with extentions off just to use StuffIt
Expander. I know that the 145b only supports 8MB of RAM, but if I buy a
6MB RAM stick that is listed for a PowerBook 140/145/170, will it work
with only 4MB to make 8MB, or will it just not work at all? Thanks.
