I've heard of people getting the 180 MHz boards up to a 50 MHz bus for a
clockspeed of 225 MHz, but mine locked up at that speed when I tried it. I
had a 44, a 48 and a 50 MHz crystal, but the 48 and 50 both failed. I was
thinking it was either the onboard RAM or the cache holding me back. I
really didn't expect to make 225 anyway when I saw the CPU; it was an older
stepping on a larger process than my 240. I wish I'd had a 45 and a 46 to
try, but no such luck.

I think 44 works most of the time. I remember another listmember reaching
264/44 with a 240 MHz 3400 earlier this year.

Hmmm...it might work with the one on my new board, but I'm not going to
sacrifice it in order to find out. I'm pleasantly surprised with how it
performs at 198 MHz, plus I have the knowledge that it's a brand new board
with a new IC on it.

Which begs the question for me...Apple knew this board was capable of at

offset a 20 percent difference in clockspeed?
Although the 3400 and 3500 are similar, you cant necessarily say its
capable of 50 MHz bus speed. The ICs on the motherboard may not be
rated for that speed, and the RAM may have the same problem. Getting
the bus speed to 44 MHz doesnt surprise though.

As a side note, I know there was some discussion about possibly replacing
the failing IC's that cause 3400 sleeping sickness. Did anyone figure out a
way to do this, and if so, how? I wouldn't mind fixing my 240 MHz board if I
could.

3400/198 = 3400/240?

2004-10-26 Thread KG
While doing a repair/hack job on a 3400c/240 this weekend, I got yet another
reminder of just how bottlenecked older Macs were by their slow bus speeds.
I took a 3400/240 which was developing the sleeping sickness problem, and
managed to get my hands on a new Apple Service 3400/180 logic board off
eBay. Prior to doing the transplant, though, I removed the 40 MHz clock
crystal from the board and replaced it with a 44 MHz one, turning the board
into a 198 MHz one.

What happened when I rebooted was totally unexpected...even at 198 MHz, the
new board seemed as fast or sometimes even faster than the original 240 MHz
one did. I had a copy of Speedometer on the PowerBook with the 240 board's
benchmarks, and I ran it with the 198 board just to see what it would say.

The results were interesting, to say the least. The CPU and FPU benchmarks
were off by anywhere from 10 to 30 percent. But thanks to the faster bus
speed, the graphics and disk benches were higher, in spite of the slower
clock speed. The disk was more than 10 percent higher (4.69-4.17). The
overall performance rating was a dead heat (3.28 for the 240, 3.27 for the
198).

Which begs the question for me...Apple knew this board was capable of at
least 50 MHz bus speeds, since they did it on the Kanga. Why did they
cripple the 603 models with anemic bus speeds when a 10 percent increase can
offset a 20 percent difference in clockspeed?

A 1400 can't do OSX because it doesn't have a PCI bus, and a PCI bus is
crucial to getting OSX to install and run. This is why the "unsupported"
2400, 3400 and Kanga can be made to run X, but the 1400 and 5300 can't.
They're built on the same NuBus architecture as the x100 Power Macs.

iTunes 1 and 2 can be installed on a 1400, but they're so demanding on CPU
and RAM that it's unrealistic to use it on an unaccelerated 1400. You might
have some success with a 1400/166 with 64 megs of RAM.

The 9.1 iTunes is on my 1400/G3 and working fine for playing internet radio.

I can see the unaccellereated 1400 now, sitting on my stereo cabinet, streaming radio
to my stereo (I don't have the digital radio channel thing thru the cable company) so
this would help out radio options a lot.

I'll post once I try it.

My stock 1400c plays mp3's just fine. Haven't tried wireless, but I
believe others have.

or combined the two with iTunes?
Dunno about that either, but not even an upgraded 1400 can use OSX,
just too much memory requirement. So you'd be limited to a older OS9
version of iTunes, at best.

My experience is that it will play MP3's and some MPEG movies, but not
DVD;s, it will play most music and video which QT 4 will handle, but it
will not load and use modern Adobe PDF and Java stuff. It will _never_
be able to use any USB nor Firewire products (it uses the old nuBus
hardware architecture, which itself is not upgradable to cardbus
architecture).

I tend to look at a 1400 and older PB's in terms of a few dedicated
programs which it can do well. I like using mine with HyperCard stack
projects I create, and others as well. With the right software it will
work with network printers, and it's really quite a good email machine.
Things like that.

Ken N.

Thanks, Picked one up on Ebay this morning for $25. It the 56k modem and
Ethernet in one, it's got the mac cd and the 2 pc floppies with it, which
means I can use it in the PB and in My Compaq 'sario notebook as well.

I had a regular GV A956 56k modem but didn't have the cable the you plug the
phone line into. Also have a TrueMobile 1150, one day I'll have a wireless
router in the house, probably when I get my g4 Ibook.

Thanks again,

Go to ebay and look for the Global Village PowerPort cards. The PowerPort
Platinum goes fairly cheaply. It'll install in the PC card slot on the

your card doesn't come with the setup stuff. I've been using a PowerPort

I have the same problem with my trusted old PB 180c . However, I was able to
see an external Zip drive sometimes. I think the PB's have an internal

tried to find it on the internet, but without luck.
