Re: 1400- battery rebuild
Hi all! Questions on this topic -- where (online? mail it in? resources?) can I get a 1400 battery rebuilt? What kind of performance/results after the rebuild? Re: 1400- battery rebuild
Gosh, that is lucky you had someone locally who had the knowledge to do it. Though this used to be a Mac-friendly town (the university was almost exclusively Mac) it's gone the way of the PC (#1 reason I got my 1400cs for a ridiculously low price -- nobody knew what it was!) and anyone who knew how to do this sort of thing seems to have disappeared. This story reminds me of when I used to have to solder my own printer cables (alas, for PCs, back when 9-pin dot matrix was all the rage)... Thanks for the tip; I'll see if I can't look in nearby bigger cities for people who specialize in this sort of thing. That's a good price for a budget-conscious student like myself. cheers -- aly Garry Hamblin wrote: I had mine rebuilt by a local outfit called Battery Boys here in Saskatoon. The 1400 battery is a Nicad I believe so I was told it was just a matter of replacing the battery cells. The replacement of the batteries includes some specialized spot welding which precludes you taking a kitchen knife and prying open the battery enclosure and doing it yourself. Evidently the Li-on batteries which later PowerBooks use cannot be rebuilt. According to them anyway. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: 1400 battery and infrared
That's interesting -- the battery part. Did you buy a new one or a reconditioned old one? I'm interested simply because my original one won't work for longer than 16 minutes or so -- even with the reconditioning program (run a number of times, under 7.6.1 and 8.1). I have hesitated buying a new (read: expensive) replacement battery because I've heard even they usually only last an hour or so. I'll be interested to see what other people on the list have to say about batteries (well, and about the IR too, as we've never been able to get our machines, both 1400cs, to communicate that way!) Great phrasing, BTW, must be some other voodoo I only wish that were the case! Re: 1400 woes
I've a nupower G3 upgrade, in two machines, actually, and have noticed a similar intermittent problem but cannot identify a pattern. (I thought for a while it only happened after I was online with the Farallon card, but I do not see how that could be making the difference!) Neither seemed to do this before we upgraded to G3 (oh, and 60 and 64 M RAM). We have to be very careful to make *sure* our machines sleep and shut off when we ask them to. (When they do not, it's a nightmare I won't go into). Each one has had the experience of being closed shut for more than a day yet still on -- on the verge of overheating. Yipes! If you find out anything about what kind of conflict really could be causing this hang (sometimes they do the same when they start up cold or from sleep, but it isn't often too long... we run OS 8.1) I would also like to hear. Good luck! As you already know, it's a great machine otherwise! Congrats! Aly Mark wrote: Hey all, My new (to me) 1400cs w/ Sonnet G3 466 upgrade 64MB RAM seems to hang just about every time I try to put it to sleep, or, if it does get to sleep, it hangs before a complete wake up. Re: Printer issues with 8.1
Okay, I've tried both of these suggestions, and restarted the machine after all tries, and nothing's worked. I also tried putting the items in both the previous and then the current system folders extension files (haven't consolidated yet) and restarting, to no avail (my computer is using some things from the previous folder and some from the current - messy!). I put them in where all the rest of the printers that show up in the Chooser are hanging out, and they have the same type chooser extension, yet the Chooser is still not seeing them. Honestly, having never had to re-install any sort of printer on a Mac since about 1984, I'm still stumped. This is one of those things that makes me realize I've huge gaps in my knowledge, and that I need to learn a bit more patience. I've only been back with this newer Mac a bit over a year, but do love it dearly and forever. Printer issues with 8.1
Hi, everyone, I feel dumb as a box of rocks asking this, but I need some assitance. I recently upgraded to OS 8.1 and now there is no way to choose my printer (Stylewriter II) in the Chooser. In 7.6.x, printing wasn't a problem. I didn't realize I had this problem until I tried to print a letter this week! Whoops! I have gone online and picked up drivers for both the II and the 1500, which is supposed to work well with the II, but I don't know how to get my Chooser to recognize them, or where to stash them in my system folder in order for them to show up in the Chooser. speaker question 1400
Hi all, My question doesn't carry any urgency; I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this minor (yet annoying) problem. Have any of you ever replaced the speaker on a 1400 yourself? My sound board is fine (when plugged into ext. speakers) but my little mono speaker sounds warped, scratchy and horrid by itself. I bought a new speaker (very cheap) quite a while back, opened up the 'book as I learned to when I did my G3 upgrade (feeling ever so geeky), and was quickly stymied by the inacessibility of the speaker area. I'm afraid to go further into the machine for ruining it. A friendly local tech told me he'd basically have to tear the thing apart to get the new speaker in, and, it would cost upwards of $60 for labor. The speaker cost like $7. Should I just go ahead and live with the crummy one, try it again, or pay the guy and live w/o my 'book for a couple of days (aaah!)? TIA. Re: Outbound
Fascinating. Yes, it makes me wish I had one of these hanging about in the basement. If anyone comes across an available one, do please post the news. Sometimes these sorts of machines are left in trash heaps at big places like universities, but I didn't know of any the last time our U purged one of its departments. It used to be an all-Mac campus; now, sadly, that's changing. Aly (University of Kansas) Jeff Walther wrote: Back in the early nineties (late 80's?)
