this was an option if you already had toast a program for burning cds
- you can save discimages in that one -
and if you have toast in both pc and mac they can read each others
images, and toast can mount disk copy images on the mac anyhow.
kenta

Not sure if Roxio EZ CD Creator for Windows can read Roxio Toast disc
images unless you install a software like Macdrive 98 or newer that
reads/writes/saves Mac files on a PC.

Re: PB 3400 failure

2003-01-04 Thread Charlie Reyes
I am having an interesting time tracking down a PB3400 failure.
After swapping parts around, it appears that my communication card
(the modem/ethernet card internal to the 3400) will prevent booting
if its in place. All I get is some clicking from the power board,
and a very faint clicking from the LCD. Sometimes the green sleep
light is on. Sometimes not. Take the communication board, out and
the unit fires right up. This isnt the motherboard or power board
(at least, alone) Odd.

Has anyone else heard of this occurring ? Is this a GLOD for the 3400 ?

Does anyone have one of those communications boards for sale ?

thanks,

Mad Dog

Re: OS 8 vs. 9 for 3400c

2002-11-16 Thread Charlie Reyes
Hi Charlie,

Unless you'll be using all of 9.1's USB, FireWire, and video enhancing
features

what do you mean by video enhancing features ? Does it makes a 3400 running
faster ?

I do video capture on another Mac and found that 9.1 allows whatever
remaining free space there is on the drive to be used for huge (23 gig)
video files. 8.6 and earlier places a 1.9 gig limit to what can be stored.
9.1 requires more memory to run so if your 3400 is a 180 it will boot at a
slow pace.

stay with 8.6. I installed 8.5.1 which I find slightly faster.

So, what's the difference between 8.5 and 8.6 (in most posts about MacOS 8,
8.6 is said to be the better) ?

Mehdi

8.5.1 is a shorter program and loads faster using up less memory. Since I
haven't succeeded in making a USB cardbus card work on my 3400/200 I didn't
see the point of retaining 8.6 with its enhanced USB capability. My Eudora
Pro 3 crashes oftener with 9.1

I have a PowerBook 3400 with OS 8.6 (the minimum required for F.6) and

prompts me for what browser I use (IE, Netscape, Opera) it always claims
that no browser could be found. This is despite the fact that I have both IE

I've tried rebuilding the desktop folder, moving Flash's install program
right into the browser's folder and even running it with the browser running
in the background, but the stupid thing insists that the browser can't be
found. The good folks at Macromedia didn't see fit to give the user the
option of manually specifying the browser's location so I'm pretty much
stuck.

Flash 6 will see only the latest browsers like IE5, Navigator x.x, Opera 5.
Upgrade to the latest and watch what happens.

Re: PowerBook G3 power problems

2002-10-17 Thread Charlie Reyes
I tested the voltage between the outer metal cylinder against the tip of
the center post. (Since I don't know whether the power adapter is supposed
to supply its 24 volts as DC or AC, I tried both!) Nothing!

Does this mean the adapter is dead, or should the voltage drop be between
two different parts of the center post, like with stereo plugs?

The same thing happened a few months back to my 3500 Kanga's power supply -
no output. So I cut off the cable behind the ferrite rod, stripped the
braid (negative terminal) and measured the voltage - 24 volts DC active! I
disassembled the power connector and found that the wire to the center post
(positive terminal) had broken off behind the soldered joint. I got it
working again after reattaching (resoldering) the cable, discarded the
ferrite, and reassembled the connector with epoxy glue.

Zapping the pram did not help. Anybody ever seen this?

Verify the ram module under System Profiler to see if it is indeed 64 MB.
If it turns out to be 32 MB it is either re-labeled or half the memory bank
is not working. The Dutch Chipmunk website could decipher the numbers on
each ram chip to give an idea of its type and capacity.

I've tried formatting it with the 1400 as a DOS disk. Same story.
Copying a file to the disk on the 1400 destroys the disk's ability to

I'm running OS 8.6 on the PB 1400. Any ideas of what's wrong?

Each time a floppy is inserted into a drive its directory is scanned and
read by the read/write head. This process is accomplished within a certain
time frame otherwise data will not be handled properly by the cpu. Older
drives which are worn out or have not seen much use are not able to
read/refresh the directory accurately. Try another known good 1400 floppy
drive.

MCE's upgrade probably includes the later G3 series cardbus cage that have

But there must be something with 2400s that make USB cards work well with

Run Disk First Aid or any repair utility. Trash system preferences and

I can't figure this one out, and worse, I do not have the OS on Floppy, only

But this doesn't seem to have a bearing on the shutdowns. I can't figure

Get your 1400 recognized by another Mac on a network. Install your OS from
the Mac w/ CD drive. Restart the 1400 and move back all your important

Re:

2002-03-23 Thread Charlie Reyes

I just downloaded Stuffit Expander from Aladdin's web site on my work PC,
but my new Powerbook 270C doesn't recognize it - trying to go to the PC
Exchange Control Panel to find something to open with (only SimpleText is
there). Found a de-binhexed version (.BIN) and downloaded it, same thing.
How do I persuade the machine to install this? Also, can anyone give me a
quick 'n' dirty idea of the differences between the 270C and 280C?

PCs don't recognize Resource Forks unless you have Macdrive 95/98 (or
similar utility) on them.

280s have faster 68LCO40-33 MHz. cpu and longer lasting type III batteries.
