Re: Installing OS on 1400c

2005-09-22 Thread Chris Pagan
Good result today, a CF adapter I'd won on eBay
 turned up. I now have
a 64MB card to use as VM for the 1400

Problem is, every time I try to use it the control
 panel suggests that
there is not enough room. When I use 'Get Info' on
 the card it reports
 as having 62MB available

 What gives?

ian,
i too have had troubles using mem cards as VM. i'm
using a SD 128mb card. it works ok until i let my
1400, 166 go to sleep. it has a hard time waking up.
the issue you are having w/the card is that it's
formatted. try lowering the VM to 60mb if it will let
you. if not then you will have to find a larger CF
card.

Re: Hard drive makes whining noise

2005-09-08 Thread Chris Pagan
i've been able to get almost any drive i stuffed into
my 1400 to work. Just make sure it fits. I had a heck
of a time getting one of those newer low profile
drives to connect to the internal cable. the only
thing you might have to do is partition the drive into
smaller partitions if it is a large drive. i think
there is an 8 gig limit to the 1400. give it a shot.

I've decided on the 1400, but how much would a
 CD-RW drive that is
compatable with the 1400 cost? Also, can you make
 copies of PC CDs
 with a Mac?

 I have a PB 1400, with a Sonnet G3 upgrade. With an
 externial LaCie CD/rw,
8/8/24, the best I was ever able to record was 2
 speed. That was with Toast
 Deluxe v4.

This past weekend, I set up the PB1400 and a
 Wallstreet on a wireless
network, and transferred about 2gb of files off the
 1400 and then burned
them on the Wallstreet using a VST 8/8/24 speed
 firewire burner. The file
transfer took about an hour (while I did something
 else) and about 30
minutes to burn the files to three cd. This was
 faster than burning them on
 the 1400.

You can find a 4 or 8 speed burner for very low cost
 on ebay.

1400 W/ FLASH DRIVE!

2005-09-06 Thread Chris Pagan
Hey guys,
 first post.
I have been working hard to get my old 1400c up to
snuff. I've maxed out the mem, bought a wireless card
for it, installed a fresh copy of 8.6. I'm to the last
step before upgrading the cpu. The HDD! I know that i
can boot 7.6.1 off of a sony mem stick and use if for
virtual memory and internet cache but should i use
it for everyday use. I think( and if someone could
help with this part) that CF cards are faster than
sony mem sticks. If so then i could use one of the
2gig cards to hold everything for me.

thanks,
chris

I've got my pb maxed out at 64mb. it's snappy. i just
wanted to see if there was a way to have the virtual
mem someplace else other than the primary HDD. 2 disks
are better than one. i was just wondering if the the
transfer rate and seek time is faster or slower than
that of the standard 2gig HDD that came with the
PB1400c. we all know that the 2 main bottlenecks with
the 1400 are the mem and the hdd.

 more expensive.

Powerbook 520c

2005-02-13 Thread Chris Knape
List newbie's first questions:

I just a picked up a working Powerbook 520c for my Kindergarten-aged son to
mess around with -- it was less expensive than most toys at only $14. I'll
probably spend a fair amount of time getting it up to speed.

A few questions:
Is 7.5.5 the best OS for this machine?
Are there any ways to recondition batteries? The one it came with is dead and
the ones that work on eBay are $80-$90.

Will I be able to transfer files from an OS X machine to this if I can get an
Ethernet adapter? I can't seem to find my old AAUI-10 base T adapter, might
have tossed it.

I'm in Grand Rapids, MI. Does anyone know a place where I may be able to pick
up flea-market type RAM upgrades, parts, an extra power supply?

Are the PCMCIA card adapters and Power PC cards pretty much non-existant?

My wife was just commenting on how this machine still looks pretty good for
being 12-13 years old. It's also kind of fun relearning 7.5 -- all the good bad
and ugly

Re: Is anyone interested in Fickle Kanga

2004-06-24 Thread Chris
How much would you want to sell for, Chuck?

Chris

Subject: Is anyone interested in Fickle Kanga

About three years ago I bought a Kanga w/64 meg card = 96MB RAM. I used
it for almost two years with no problems whatsoever. This past Fall I
bought my dream 466MHz DVD Clamshell and put the Kanga in a drawer. It
sat there until this past weekend when I decided to sell it to a cousin.
I figured it would be a good idea to plug it in, charge the battery and
remove personal info before she picked it up.

It won't boot completely. Sometimes it chimes and does nothing else.
Sometimes it boots but freezes when the desktop begins to show icons.
Once it even made the same sound as a baseball going through a
grandparents living room window - something they still remind me of. I
never heard that sound in a computer before and thought the screen blew
up. It didn't and seems to be the only sure working item on the laptop.

I've tried everything ever mentioned on the list and can only say, I
fought the Kanga and the Kanga won. I can't justify any more time spent
with it and now only wish to part with it ASAP. I removed the 5 gig hard
drive and it worked in a Wallstreet. I swapped out every part except the
logic board and suspect it to be what suffered drawer death.

If anyone is interested in buying the entire laptop then please email me
off list. If nobody here is interested then I'll part out the known good
 components on eBay.

Here's what will come in the laptop:
 5 gig hd
 64 mb ram
 good 1+ hour battery

Here's what can be negotiated into the sale:
 Extra 1+ hour battery
 power supply
 g/v 56k v.90 pcmcia modem w/dongle

Here's some basic info on the laptop:
The case is in excellent condition with almost no signs of being
handled. The screen is perfect. The keyboard had all keys removed with a
thorough cleaning of entire unit. The laptop is clean as when new. It
used to be a perfect working laptop. Maybe it's just mad at me for
 selling it to my cousin.

Please feel free to ask all the questions which come to mind.
 Shipping will be from Seattle.
 Chuck

1400 / Wallstreet Wireless Question

2004-06-10 Thread Chris
Looking to go wireless with my current setup (a 1400 running 9.1 and a
Wallstreet running Jag / 9.1). Does anyone have any advice on what combo to
buy? I'd prefer something that's compatible with both, as to avoid mix 'n
match hardware issues.

Anybody?

Re: Re(2): PB1400 Questions

2004-04-08 Thread Chris
That's what I originally thought as well. I figured that the lower wattage
on the M7883 would just take a LOT longer to recharge the battery, but until
I had a real 1400 AC adapter, I killed an old battery, a new (old stock)
battery, and a rebuilt one I made. Mobo mojo maybe? Can anyone explain why
this happens?

Chris

Word of warning though, if you leave in the 1400's
battery when you use the Duo's adapter, you WILL kill the battery. Don't
know why, just happenssomeone with more knowledge here help me out?

I want U to know I didn't believe a WORD of this comment... as I RAN (not
walked!) and replace the Duo 7783 adapter i had on my 1400c/183 with a
proper
one...!

:-D

Now, unfortunately, my sis and brother-in-law BOTH have Duo ac adapters on
their 1400s, so now I gotta get those replaced!

Anyone know why this is the case? Does this happen whenever you use a
lower-wattage ac adapter w/ a Powerbook? I thought the only drawback was
slower
recharge times, which I can certainly deal with...

Re: Re(2): PB1400 Questions

2004-04-07 Thread Chris
Done this with the Duo adapter to my 1400 when the 1400's AC went bad. The
Duo's stock ac adapter doesn't put out enough power to charge the battery,
but it will run the 1400. Word of warning though, if you leave in the 1400's
battery when you use the Duo's adapter, you WILL kill the battery. Don't
know why, just happenssomeone with more knowledge here help me out?

Chris

One more thing... I tried to test the voltage coming out of the Duo
adaptor last night before I plugged it in and let it sit over night. I
couldn't get a reading on the volt meter, with the Duo adaptor, but it
tested a 5300 adaptor just to be sure the meter worked, and that was
fine... So, I tried setting the meter to XK under the Ohm setting like
I would to do a self test. I connected one pole to the center of the
adaptor (o) (in this case, the o) and one to the center prong on the
AC side. Nothing on the meter, so I tried the outer two prongs and
still nothing. I tried again with the outside of the DC side (o) (the
parenthesis, not the o in the ASCII representation), tried the prongs,
and still nothing. Am I doing something wrong? The power adaptor works
with a Duo 230, but that only leads me to believe that the adaptor
could be putting out a bare minimum and thus having little to no effect
 on the 1400 Possible?

 Thanks,

 Jason

I'm taking my 1400 with me on a road trip, and want to dump my digital

SD PC cards that I can use? And maybe any info on where to purchase?

2004-02-01 Thread Chris

Should've been more specific. I need something like this :

http://www.opticsplanet.net/simpletech-memory-mmcsdad.html

I have a Secure Digital card slot on my camera, and a nice USB multi format
reader for home. BUT, since my 1400 doesn't support USB, I was wondering if
anyone had any experience with something like the above.

Chris
(checking out Otherworld right now) ;)

Check out Other World Computing, they're good

virtual memory and schoolwork temporary backups, (and
I'm hoping that's what you mean by SD).

Re: Setting up a powerbook 5300ce for dsl?

2003-07-02 Thread Chris O'Shannon
Check your Appletalk setting (modem port, printer port or Ethernet if
you use a Ethernet card) and restart.

Chris

I finally sat down last night to set my 5300 for use on my home
network,
only to realize that I don't know what I'm doing.

This is a bit embarrassing, as I have set up hundreds of pc's for this
same
thing, and had no trouble at all doing so with my eMac, in both
classic and
ten.

I found the tcp/ip control panel pretty easily, set it to dhcp server.
the
ip address doesn't display, although it says it's getting it from the
dhcp
server, in this case, the router?

I set the router address. Still nothing. The little lights on my asante
ethernet card are blinking, so i don't think thats the problem.
I'm running 8.1. I have a copy of 8.5 and the updater for 8.6, but
it's on
cd and i need the ethernet connection to get it on the hard drive.

I went from System 6 to Win 9X to OS X, and quite honestly, i feel a
bit
lost in 8.1. Much of this stuff I only vaguely recognise. Can't seem
to find
a version of stuffit that will run on 8.1. Gah!

Any help you guys might be able to offer is of course, vastly
appreciated!

520 dead?

2003-02-10 Thread Chris Malanga
Hello all... new subscriber here.

I recently got back a Powerbook 520 that I had given away some years
ago. It is in pretty bad shape, with the hinges broken and the screen
completely off. I was looking to repair this machine, simply for the
nostalgic value.

My problem is this, when I press the power button, I get nothing. At
first I thought that it was the batteries, but it also happens when the
power cord is plugged in. Is there some type of motherboard battery or
something that could be dead and causing this? Or is there some way to
reset the machine? I have tried this with the screen attached and
detached... and get nothing.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Can you please Cc: me as I am on
the digest version. Thanks so much, and I look forward to learning a
lot about these classic portables.

wobbly G3's a/c adapter

2002-12-23 Thread Chris Smith
I was gifted a 250 Mhz G3 Powerbook (Kanga?/Lombard?) which has an
intermittent Power problem that I would like to solve. The power adapter's
shielded bayonet style plug is wobbly when it's socketed and needs to be
wedged at an angle to make a connect. It's a pain, unreliable and I don't
look so cool goofing with this in front of women! I guess this problem is
common, but how do I fix it? Appreciative of any replies - I'm new to
Powerbooks, so I apologize if this is too remedial.

Thanks,

Power Adapters

2002-08-01 Thread Chris Adam Christenson

Greetings:

My friend recently gave me a Powerbook 145B. Unfortunately, batteries
and auto adapters are difficult to find and expensive.

I read the specifications on my AC adapter, which said the output was
7.5V, 2.OA. What I'm wondering is if I could use a generic universal
auto adapter with my Powerbook, and also where I could find batteries
at a low cost. After all, a laptop that isn't portable may as well not
be a laptop.

Thanks in advance

V-memory question

2002-07-17 Thread Chris Boring

I have a Powerbook 3400c (200mhz, 64mb ram, 3gig HDD)

I recently installed a piece of software that requires me to turn of virtual
memory when it's in use. (Reason 2.0, if you're wondering.)

Reason works ok with 64, but I'm wondering if it's worth my time and effort
to keep switching back and forth whenever I use my 'book for other stuff.
Is VM (or RamDoubler, which I usually use) worth it? Or should I bite the
bullet, buy a 128 chip and leave VM/RD behind me?

HRm, as far as i recall, there's no decent freeware music software for the

It costs over $200, but it's completely self contained, and worth every

Re: ethernet card summary

2002-04-18 Thread Chris Loehr

I have this card I am trying to get to work on a Powerbook 1400 running 8.6.
It is by Dlink, see link below. No luck yet but does have mac driver disk in
the box. Instructions say it works with only newer powerbooks like 2400, 3400
etc, web says works with 1400 also. Can't find drivers on the web. At this
site the card is not badly priced. It is a 10/100 card and has a 56k modem.
And is dongleless. Maybe you will have better luck getting it to work than I
did. If anybody tries this card and gets it to work on 1400 please let me
know. Maybe I am just doing something wrong.

You did leave an important brand off of the list however and that is Kingston.
Many of their cards had mac drivers in the box as well as on the web. I am
currently using a Kingston EtheRX IC PC Card in my Powerbook 1400. Box
included mac and pc drivers when I bought it several years ago. Has worked
flawlessy for me.

Also I believe Dayna had compatible cards.

Good thought though. I like that idea and may try it myself,

Thanks

Alternatively, you could get a 1400-compatible PCMCIA wireless card. The
Lucent Silver card has had good reviews and costs around $45-50 from OWC
 http://eshop.macsales.com/specials/MailList.cfm

You could then get an airport card for your iMac. I'd seen them going for
around $50 at various places on the web, but can't remember now. Give
 Sherlock a try.

This solution might be a little bit more expensive than an ethernet card for
your 1400, but it's a thought. Good luck.

Sorry I don't have a digital camera at the moment, the card was
branded Transcend, it started life as 8mb but had the pads for 8 more
chips, it was a simple matter to fit the extra chips (and de-coupling
 capacitors).
once re-built with EDO (all I could get at the time) it worked fine
provided I only used the apple 4Mb card, with the 8Mb card I got
memory errors, I re-built the card yesterday with the correct FPM
chips and now my 1400 has 64Mb of ram and it works fine.
unfortunately the Japanese site only appears to have a photo of the
hacked card and no other details, if I can find out more then I will
 post it here.

Any idea if something like this might be possible for the 3400? (Maybe to
bring it up to 256+?)

I was thinking of using my 3400 for music as well.

A friend of mine about a year ago gave me a copy of
Opcode's (now obsolete) Music Shop (a midi program for
Mac in case you aren't familiar with it.) I was
thinking of picking up a MidiMan as well... My
problem is that I play Guitar, not keyboard... and
neither of my guitars is setup with Midi ports as
keyboards standardly come with.

I'm assuming I can run some sort of synth or something
between the Guitar and the Midibox to get the midi
output that I need. Do you have any experience with
this and could you recommend any hardware?

Well, it's a pretty expensive proposition: you need either a guitar with
built in MIDI (which is old and hard to find) or you need to mount an audio
pickup on the guitar you have, and connect it to a MIDI capable guitar
synth. Either way, you're looking at a several hundred dollar outlay. I
rather like Roland GR series of guitar synths, take a look on Ebay.

I'm not really familiar with musicshop, so I couldn't really say what I
think of it. But I'll give my heartfelt recommendation to Propellerheads
REason, I do most of my tracks on it, and a minimal track will run fine on
your 3400.

What you need is some kind of MIDI interface. A MIDI midi interface plugs
into your modem/printer port and will give you MIDI input/output. You will
also need some kind of MIDI sequencing software.

MOTU, MIDIman and (formerly) Opcode mkae MIDI interfaces.

MOTU, Steinberg and EMagic make MIDI sequencing software. Hope this helps.
Entire books could (and have) been written on this topic. I use my 3400 for
music, so it's one i'm well familiar with. Good luck!

This sounds like someone installed MacOS from a Wallstreet or later G3 disc,
so you have an internal 56k extension on your disk... this also happened
with my 3400 (unfortunately I don't have the OS 7.6 disk that came with it.
Anyone have one they'd be willing to burn for me?)

Go to apple and download the correct driver for the Kanga. And consider a
picking up a PCMCIA card modem. I have a US Robotics one whitch i'm very
happy with.

From: Don Silver [EMAIL PROTECTED]

As for the AC connector, I think the 5xx has a less
frequent but still annoying version of the PB 5300 AC
port problem. If you have charging/power problems that
you can't solve by resetting the power manager,
reconditioning and and using empathy on the batteries,
replacing the on-board battery (PRAM battery?), then a
poor AC port connection is probably your problem,
especially if you've ever had to prop up the AC plug
to get any power. My experience was, after
experiencing unsolvable power problems with my 520, I
finally sent it in to Sun Remarketing for a
motherboard replacement (apparently the motherboard is
soldered directly to the AC port). This completely
cured the problem, although it was a bit expensive.
The next time this occurs with my PB, I'll probably
take it to my local Mac shop and tell them to just
flow some solder around the AC port/motherboard
 connection.

I've also had this problem with my 3400, and in the end, it needed
soldering.

started
out at around 10.5 volts, after overnight, it was right at 8.0V. Bummer.

I have 1 3400 battery and it lasts around 1.5 hours of surfing the net
with
 a 56K modem and a 3GB HD. What is common to get on a 3400/200? I have
replaced the original HD with a 3GB that has 200mA less current draw than
the factory installed HD. 1GB larger and 200mA less current, worth that
to
me! The original drive was spec'd at 700mA current draw, and the new
one
 was 500mA.

Is there anyone or anyplace that rebuilds the batteries? Is it worth it?
I
really would like to have longer battery life.

AFAIK, 5300, 3400 and G3 'Kanga' batteries can all be used in the 3400. I'm
not sure if the 1400 had the same form factor, but I'd imagine if it did,
you could use it as well in your 3400.

All the stuff I've seen from Apple says you can use 5300 batteries in
newer models in which they fit. The reverse isn't true though. The
5300 was supposed to be LiOn but since a few of the early ones kind
of caught fire Apple dropped them and used NiMh. With later models
they did use LiOn. The charging circuits of later PBs work with any
of them (I think there are actually three types of batteries in that
 form factor.)

Subject: Which PB for $450 USD?

 Hello,

I have managed to convince my father to purchase an older PB rather than
some
old PC laptop he spied at a local used PC shop. Now, of course, I have to
help
him find one. He can only afford to spend about $450 USD. I thought that
the
best option would be a PB 3400, which one can find on eBay for a little
less
than that. Another option would be to purchase a 1400c or 1400cs and a
sonnet
crescendo, also on eBay. I myself have the latter option and am quite
happy
with it, despite a small problem with freezing.

My question is which of these options do you think would be best?

My father is barely computer literate, so I want to get him something
quite
simple to operate [I will have about ten days over christmas holidays to
teach
him how to use it]. He wants to use this machine to do email, surf the
web and
do some word processing, while away from home. If you have any other
suggestions besides these two options, please suggest away! I just want
to
find him the best machine for the money.

 Thanks,

I have a Powerbook 3400, which I use for those purposes, and for some light
audio work. It's a fine machine, and I recommend it highly. BUT. you
MUST make sure that the PB he gets has a ram upgrade inside it! 16 mb is
just not enough! I currently have the 48 mb card, and still feel a bit ram
challenged at 64mb total ram.

Just a suggestion.

Good luck!

Re: Choices, choices

2001-09-17 Thread Chris Boring

I believe the cost of upping the machine to a CD RW is about $200, which is
the current going rate for an external CD RW drive of the same speed. So
cost isn't an issue, and I prefer to have to carry as little as possible in
my laptop bag. (I usually leave my 3400's Zip module and 2 spare batteries
behind if I'm only going out for a day or less.)

You don't think a CD-RW is useful now because I'll wager you don't have

Actually, I back up my 540c over the network (onto my Q800) which has a
 Zip100 drive. I do have a CD-RW (but it's in a PC - yuk!), so I may opt
to
get a Mac with one. I was just wondering whether it would be cheaper to
get
an external CD-RW than spend the extra $$$ to Apple for one internally.

Don't buy more RAM from Apple, it's hideously expensive. Adding RAM is

 That's what I figured.

Re: problems connecting using SCSI Disk Mode

2001-09-17 Thread Chris Loehr

I have sold those adapters before and there are two types. I believe one is 29
pin (no switch on it) and the other is 30 pin but it had a switch on it that
allowed you to switch between scsi disk mode and regular scsi. Also it had a
little led that lit up when in scsi disk mode. I do know there is a certain order
you have to turn on the powerbooks. Have you tried connecting in scsi disk mode
to any desktops to see if everything is working? I always thought you could
connect two powerbooks together but am not sure. Do they both have IR on them you
may be able to communicate that way.

  Hi!
  I am trying to connect a 3400c running OS 8.6 with a 5300cs running OS 7.5

I tried using a 30 pin HD/SCSI adapter on both units.
The HD/SCSI adapters were then then connected to the cable which came with
  my zip drive

Re: Choices, choices

2001-09-16 Thread Chris Boring

I'd go for the combo drive iBook myself, or, barring that, the DVD model.
You may not use these features NOW... but as people on this list CERTAINLY
know, you can get many years of faithful use out of a Powerbook, and at some
point they may come in handy. You can't beat CD-RWs for fast backups, and I
can envision a time when all software titles start to come out on DVDs
instead of CD ROM, so why not have all the options you can. I know those
who bought older Powerbooks without CD ROM drives are kicking themselves
now.

Well, pretty soon, I'm thinking about retiring my PowerPC upgraded 540c
and
save up for a new iBook.

 Here's my dilemma:
Should I get the base iBook and add more RAM?
Should I get the DVD or CD-RW iBook, not that I'd really use those
features?

Should I get it from ClubMac, the Apple Store, or the MUG Store?

What would I have to go through to get the educational discount (I think
 it's like $50 or so)?

massive 3400 overhaul... pt. 1

2001-09-08 Thread Chris Boring

(This is in 2 parts because of the list's 10k message size limit)

I'm having massive problems with my 3400c, which I'll outline below. Any
suggestions would be appriciated.

problem one: The AC adaptor connector came loose from the logic board. I
moved the harddrive, keyboard and ram from my 240 mhz machine to my 200 mhz
parts machine's chassis. It works fine, for the most part. Is it worth
soldering the piece back down and ropping the drive and ram back in the
other 3400? Does 40mhz make a big difference? Does anyone know where I
can get an original G3 (3500) logic board so I can really turbocharge this
baby?

problem two: the infamous Powerbook 3400 loose battery issue. When the
battery is jostled, sometimes the power shuts off, and I need to re attach
the AC adaptor before the Powerbook can be turned on again. I've tried
calling Apple to get the gasket kit to fix it, but it's ALWAYS busy. Any
other solution? Also, sometimes, the battery drains, and the green
blinking sleep ligt goes solid. When this happens, even plugging the 'book
into AC doesn't help, i need to let it sif for 10+ hours till the light goes
off, only THEN can I run it from AC.

problem three: I'd like to add a USB PCMCIA to this machine. I'm shit outta
luck, huh?

problem four: I'd like to find the 128mb ram card for under $140. I'm shit
outta luck, huh?

massive 3400 overhaul pt. 2

2001-09-08 Thread Chris Boring

problem five: I'm currently running an old install of OS 8.6 on this
machine. IT's started to get glitchy on me. Files will no longer open when
I double click on them, though they will open if they are in my apple menu
(I've dragged an alias of my hard drive there, but it's still annoying.)
Aliases are unaffected.

problem six: TCP/IP issues. I'm currently using AOL 5.0 as my ISP, as my
folks pay for it, I'm poor, and none of the free services offer a Mac
version, AFAIK. I can dial into AOL with no problems, and I'm able to use
any aol services (email, instant messages, chat, et. al.) However, any time
I attempt to connect to the web, either with AOL's internal browswer, or
with Internet Explorer 5 or Netscape 4, I get an error: unable to connect
to http://www.XX.com. I'm thinking it's a problem with TCP/IP, but
everything is ok. (Incidentally, I use a US Robotics XJ5560 56.6k modem,
NOT the internal 33.6k modem.) This system worked fine with AOL and IE5 up
until 2 months ago, shortly before I damaged the power connector. I haven't
installed anything new lately.

I have installed all the patches available from Apple, but to no avail. I
believe what I really need to do is a clean system reinstall, but
unfortunately, when I was given the computer, it didn't come with the
special system 7.6 CD that the 3400 requires. I have access (through a
friend) to the apple developer library of disk images, so I can easily
upgrade the 3400 back up to OS 8.6 when I'm ready, but first I need the
3400's specific version of 7.6. Does anyone know where I can download a
disk image, or would someone perhaps be willing to the burn me a copy?

And for that matter, is it worth uprgrading from 8.1 to 8.6? What are the
big differences? Do you lose a lot of resources?

Thanks so much, I know the knowledgable people here will be able to help.

WallStreet Hinge Replacement Info

2001-08-03 Thread Chris Waldrip

Well, I'm very thankful to this list. Shortly after the last thread on this
topic came up a couple of weeks ago I finally heard the 'snap of doom' from
my display. It had been loose, and I knew it was coming, so I paid special
attention to the thread.

Someone mentioned that a company called PowerBook Parts (www.pbparts.com)
offered a custom made hinge that was good quality steel, as opposed to the
cheap metal used originally by Apple.

I checked Pre-Owned Electronics (www.preowned.com) and a replacement Apple
hinge was around $200 ($99/hinge). Now, I like PreOwned, but I'm a cheap
bastard ;-)

I backed up my hard disk and shipped off my WallStreet after getting an RMA
from PBParts. USPS Priority Shipping with insurance and tracking was about
$25 and took two days to get from Atlanta to Arizona. Two days after they
received it I got an invoice in my email, and promptly paid via PayPal (my
best option).

I also asked if they thought I needed a new drive bay eject mechanism - my
left battery bay doesn't seem to want to maintain contact if I flex my
PowerBook too much, and we're not talking bending it, just lifting one
handed or something equally stupid. The reply, was a no. The case screws may
just be over-tightened. They 'passed' up an easy sale! Gosh... Honest sales
people... ;-)

Two days later (today) I received my PowerBook.

THE HINGE IS AMAZING! It's like brand new! In fact it's probably a bit
stiffer than it originally was.

I'm very impressed with PBParts... A great job and service.
