different dialup connection speeds
Ordinarily I've gotten dialup connection speeds between 28800 and 31300 with a 6100 using an external 56k modem. Last week I connected a Powerbook G3 to the internet with speeds consistently between 45500 and 46000. The G3 has an 56k internal modem, 288 MB RAM, and a 500 Mhz Sonnet G3 accelerator. Obviously, I'm ecstatic about the increased speed bcause web pages pop up very quickly, so I'm not displeased, only curious. What would account for the increased dialup speeds? hypertext links in email from list: pb1400
In my emails to my pb1400 from the Powerbooks list I don't have the blue hypertext links for accessing list archives even though that feature works just fine on my desktop 6100. I also can't send attachments in emails from my 1400. I use Eudora light for email on both machines. I've checked through my extensions lists but can't find any obvious discrepancies between them, and I've compared the settings for Eudora on both machines and they look identical. What am I missing? dialup connections and wireless networks with pb 1400
Has anyone used a wireless setup with a dialup connection on a 1400? Is it even worth thinking about? I've got a dialup connection with a nominal speed of 56k, but it always connects at 31.3k or less. I've shared a dail-up connection with my wireless LAN, and that works ok if a little slow. Sorry about the unclear question. I would eventually like to share a dialup connection with a wireless LAN. Right now I don't have any hardware, I'm trying to learn the technical aspects of wireless networking with a 1400. I found one site with a great deal of detail about wireless networks. The author doesn't address dialup connections other than to say that he has sympathy for folks without faster connections. http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html I printed out this site but found it somewhat confusing at this time. I'm not exactly sure where else to start but I'll look inthe archives. Frank C. Modica 501 E. Green St. Urbana, IL. 61802 USA 1-217-367-4133 -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: pb 1400 screenk problems
Drew/Mad Dog: It could also be a poorly seated display connector - you might try checking to make sure the display connector is fully seated by disconnecting, then reconnecting it. Thanks for the help. After reseating the display cables, the computer screen popped up just fine. I hadn't properly connected them when I swapped the screens. The fix took less than 15 minutes though I'd been playing with it for several days. Frank C. Modica 501 E. pb 1400 screenk problems
I've been having problems with an active matrix screen on a pb1400/166. The computer will usually start up just fine, but when I open an application such as Office and run it for some time, I start getting lots of colored vertical and horizontal lines on the screen. If I restart the computer I will get white horizontal bars, then white and horizontal bars, and finally the oscillating colored lines up and down the screen. Last week I had swapped out a passive matrix screen for the active matrix screen on that book. I first experienced the colored lines when I tried to adjust the brightness and contract toggles on side. However, that problem seemed to go away after restarting the compoter. This week I had networked the 1400 with my duo and my 6100 through a hub. I file-shared an old Virex program to scan for viruses. The screen color problem resurfaced with vengance. If I shut down the computer and let it sit for several hours (preferably overnight), it will boot up fine and Word while start without any problems. I'm frustrated because the screen situation has been damned inconsistent. Earlier this afternoon, the screen lines reappeared when I tried to open Entourage. Right now the screen seems ok. I have a Word document up, and I've worked on it for several minutes without any problems. I deleted the Virex program while the computer was still behaving for me. I've tried zapping the PRAM and rebuilding the desktop when I've had the lines on the screen, without any resolution to the problem. I also checked the 1400 with Disk First Aide, and everything was ok. The passive matrix screen works fine on the computer that formerly held the active matrix screen. Before switching screens, the active matrix screen seemed fine on my other 1400. Software or hardware problem? Frank C. Modica 501 E. Farallon ethermac card won't connect
I picked up a Farallon ethermac PC card on ebay to create an ethernet network for a pb 1400 through the PCMCIA slot. The 1400 iss a 166 mhz model with 56 mb of RAM. I installed the software from the diskette, but when I stuck the card into the slot it didn't bite; springing back and forth in the slot. The card itself is a PCMCIA 2.1 and PC Card standard. When I looked at the end of the card and the inside of the PCMCIA slot, they both appeared to be female connectors. Did I get the wrong kind of card? I'd really like to get this computer on an ethernet network. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Connecting CDMA cellphone to Powerbook?
Excellent, thanks. Do you by chance have a part number for that adapter? I Googled Mac Palm serial adapter and got scads of hits - most of which went to online vendors who no longer have it in stock. If I had the part number I might be able to track it down a little more efficiently. I found an adapter at http://www.twstore.com/twstore/used25.html. When I checked back at the site they still had some in stock. Frank C. Modica 501 E. Green St. Urbana, IL. 61802 USA 1-217-367-4133 -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: duo ethernet
EN/SC requires Asantetalk drivers. I think I got them here somewhere. p-mail me. I have the installer for the Asante adapter, so I'll plug in the adapter and run that application. Well I don't think your system is seeing it if ethernet isn't presented as an option. I've used EN/SC adapters but it's been a while. Have the drivers loaded? Has it worked in the past? When the duo boots up, the EN/SC icon flashes across the screen while all the extensions load. Part of the problem seems to be with Appletalk. Ethernet is a not offered as a choice when I open the Appletalk CP. If I update OS 8.0 to 8.1, will the update provide the drivers for Appletalk so ethernet becomes an option? Or do I need a more recent version of OT/PPP? I am running 1.0 on the duo but have the installer for 1.1.1. When the duo was running 8.5.1, I was able to use the Asante adapter and file share with my 6100, but I had problems with the hard drive and had to initialize it. I had experienced some problems trying to install OS over SCSI Disk Mode, so I kit-bashed the operating system, patching it together through diskette loads with my floppy adapter. Over the weekend I was able to share the whole installer for 8.0 from my 6100 to the duo using SCSI Disk modem and the installation worked except for problems with ethernet and modem port issues with PPP (that problem will be addressed after I get ethernet enabled!!!) duo ethernet
I've been trying to connect my duo 2300 to my 6100 through ethernet but haven't had any luck. I just reinstalled 8.0 (will update to 8.1 later) on the Duo and I'm running 8.1 on the 6100. The problem is with Appletalk. When I open the Appletalk control panel and click on the pull-down menu for Conect Via... I only have three choices: Remote Only, Printer Port, and Modem Port. On the 6100 there is a fourth option for Ethernet. I'm guessing that I'm probably missing an extension, but I've compared the Duo extension set with the 6100 set and don't see any discrepancies. Here are the ethernet related extensions that I have: Apple Built-In Ethernet, Apple Ethernet CD, Apple Ethernet CSII, Apple Ethernet LC, Apple Ethernet NB, and EtherTalk Phase Two. I'm using the Asante EN/SC Micro SCSI Adapter to create my network. I dragged the Asante extension from my old system folder to the new folder. I know that I can connect the duo with the 6100 via SCSI Disk mode as well as with a printer cable. SCSI Disk Mode is how I finally got 8.0 installed on the duo once I got all my SCSI connections straight. But I'd like ethernet so I can directly connect the duo to my iMac at work. I have a small hub that has connected my venerable 170 with the iMac, so I can't wait to get the duo connectable. Frank C. Modica 501 E. Re: Seagate Barracude and 6100 and duo music
I'm the original poster about the Seagate Barracuda, 6100, and an external drive case. Actually, I meant to post the message to the Powermacs list (opps!!!) and wondered why it wasn't showing up in the digest or archives. Anyway, I have an old Mac hard drive case that originally held a Mac 20 mb hard drive ( Apple Hard Disk 20SC). It is now working fine with my original Quantum 2 GB drive after some judicious troubleshooting. The SCSI ID for that external drive is 4; I checked the settings from the Quantum web site. However, I'm wondering if the power supply for that case powerful enough to handle a 1/2 height 9.1 GB Seagate Barracuda? I wanted that much storage to back up information from my Duo, pb170, 540c (son's computer), and my 6100, so I can somewhat keep this thread about powerbooks. I also have been converting CD tracks from my home collection to MP3's. BTW, I have been using my 2300 duo as a portable MP3 player. At home I connect it to my home stero, though the sound comes out mono. However, when I use headphones from a portable CD player, the sound comes out stereo. Is there any way to play the music on my duo through my car cassete player? I have a portable CD player with one of those tape thingies that let you use the car stereo. Is there any way to connect the duo to the CD player? I'm using SoundAPP PPC to convert the tracks to AIFF and Blade ENC to convert the tracks to MP3'S. SoundAPP also does a reasonable job of creating playlists and playing those MP3'S. Frank C. Modica 501 E. networking with a Duo
I've tried to set up an ethernet network between a Duo 2300 and my 6100, but the Duo frequently hangs up while loading the extensions. I've done a voodoo dance with the Duo and sometimes it will connect, but usually it hangs after the Express modem extension loads on the screen. I've played with extension sets on the Duo, going to 8.5 base and 8.5 all while including extensions that I'll need for filesharing, but it still hangs up. It does seem to be an extensions problem, but am I missing something obvious? For operating systems, the 6100 runs 8.1 and the Duo has OS 8.5.1. As for hardware, the 6100 has an AAUI transceiver and I'm trying to connect the 2300 through a mini-dock with an Asante EN/SC SCSI ethernet adapter. When I've used the SCSI adapter with my PB 170 it connects every time. When I disconnect the adapter from the duo it starts up just fine. I have done the serial cable mini-network between the 6100 and the Duo but would love to do the cross-over network for ethernet. BTW, I can connect my 170 to an iMac using the EN/SC adapter but the iMac won't connect to the Duo. Frank Modica Prairie School 2102 E. CD disk images
I was intrigued by Clark's comments about using DiskCopy to make disk images of CD-ROMs on a HD. Clark, can you do use DiskCopy with audio CDs? Is there a way to play music CDs on a old PB if you have a large enough HD? If you want to use a CD-ROM in your regular use of the laptop there is a solution that doesn't include lugging an external drive around. When I got a 5300c I installed a 20Gb drive in it. I use DiskCopy to make a disk image of CD-ROMs on the HD. I can then mount the disk image on the desktop. It appears to the system as another disk but without the need for a physical disk drive and disk. It is also faster than a CD-ROM drive. Frank C. Modica 501 E. . Re: PB5300 and Kanji items
When you do the installation of the OS, be sure to select for installation all the items that apply to language systems on the Mac. OS 8.5/8.6 gives you the option at one stage which allows you to specifically register the installation to focus on Japanese and miss out a long list of other languages. From memory, I think that this equips you with the input method for the Kanji. If it is not actually part of the OS, then it then comes as a part of the Japanese Language Kit which includes a number of Kanji and alphabetic or Roman fonts (type sets). For 8.5/8.6 there may be a specific, updated language kit. Ours was installed using the 8.5/8.6 update files for an earlier version. The font files are pretty heavy stuff, and your extensions folder will have a number of new things in it. Of course you will be sure that all these extensions are enabled. What options exist for downloading Japanese language kits for OS 8.1 on my home computer? I pulled out an 8.1installation CD but couldn't find language kits for it. Is there any way I can pull the necessary parts off an 8.6 installation disk and drop them on my System Folder for 8.1? I've searched through Google and the apple site but haven't a real clue how to use or find a kit for 8.1. Incidentally, I followed the directions for 8.6 and 9.0, and now pull up mostly flawless Japanese script on my work iMac. However, I might be missing one or two fonts because some sites still come up as gibberish. Frank Modica Prairie School 2102 E. sick 170
Some time ago my 170 developed major problems, but I had to put it aside as I got ready for the new school year. However, I sorely miss using my laptop, and also want to salvage files from it if possible. Based on tips from several folks and other information on the web, I think I've got a blown fuse, probably caused by my power adaptor. I have a M 5140 model adaptor, and it was tagged as a culprit for shorting out fuses because of some problem with insulation in the plug. I was pointed to a site that showed how to replace the fuse, but it entails soldering, and I've never soldered anything. 1. Would it be worthwhile and/or reasonably cost efficient to pay someone else to replace the fuse? 2. Or am I better off buying another 170 from ebay and swapping my RAM and hard drive into it? 3. As for the power adaptor...are there good replacements available that won't short out fuses? 4. Is soldering something best left to an experienced electronics person? I am getting braver about opening up older powerbooks and PowerMacs, but don't want get too far ahead of my own learning curve. Thanks again. I've certainly learned quite a bit from this list, and I'm not afraid of learning more stuff. Frank Modica Prairie School 2102 E.
