Re: which ipod for a Pismo?

2005-12-29 Thread ric

Apple.com/support/ipod lists the system requirements.
It depends more on the operating system than the machine.
With 10.3 any ipod should work. Though I have a nano working on 10.2.8.

Best of luck,
Rick

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could please tell me which version of the
ipod/s would work with a 400 mhz G3 Pismo laptop, 512 mb ram, firewire
and usb 1.
Thanks.

Re: Some questions about PB500 series batteries

2005-11-07 Thread ric

The battery no longer shows up in the control strip, and none of the
battery programs recognize it anymore. Oh well.
   -John

Before you chuck this battery, try this routine.
1- Launch IBR with the right hand slot empty.
2- When asked, insert the battery.
3- You should see extended precharge
4- Let it run (maybe as long as 20 min.)
5- If it doesn't work try again. After 3 or 4 times with no success,
then give up on it.

I was wondering if there was any other way to charge the 500 series
intelligent batteries without having them in the computer and without
a fancy external charger. My batteries are so dead that the computer
won't even recognize them, and I am hoping that I can get enough power
to them to get the computer to recognize them and I could use EMMpathy
or LIND Battery Utilities to fix them.

P.S. Intelligent Battery Recondition recognizes the batteries but says
they can't be fixed.
P.P.S. My floppy drive is broken so I can't put any new software on it.

Just checked ebay and there are several up for sale. A couple for $26 buy it

and a couple for $10 starting bid. FWIW I paid $18 on ebay for the one i'm

Re: pb 520 hinge questions x2

2005-04-07 Thread Ric
Lowes etc. have nylon screws and nuts, I never liked to add any more
metal inside or thru the case.

I made a similar fix to a PB 180. The lower case housing has sunken
holes for the screws. The bottom of it had broken so there was no
where for the screw to press against. I got a large thin washer and
counter sunk the hole. Then I put a long countersunk screw through
the washer, through the lower housing and into the threaded insert
in the upper housing. It is thin enough to clear a desktop because
of the feet. It isn't pretty either but it's on the bottom so it's
easy to forget it's there.

Something that's worked for me in the past with really dead batts.
Launch IBR with the battery bay empty. When prompted insert the batt.
It should then go into Extended Charging mode. May take 15 min. or so,
and several tries, but usually works.
Rick

I have a PowerBook 520 and I am having trouble with my batteries. Up
until yesterday at least one of them worked, but now the one that
worked before won't charge. The battery is recognized but stays empty.
I'm pretty sure this is just another problem with the stupid EMM, but
I tried both EMMpathy and Apple's Intelligent Battery Recondition. The
second battery just acts like a paper weight.

Hi Ric, thanks! I know there's probably a simple solution to this, but as
I can't seem to find it on my own...
I can boot up from the Netwk Access floppy, but both Put Away, and
Eject commands cannot eject the floppy cuz it's the os in use. Is there
some other command that will eject it after booting so I can then put in
the first OS floppy? Thanks.

Hi, Can you copy the system from the floppy to the HD and then boot
from that? An alternative would be to transfer the files or install
the new system via appletalk.
Best of luck,

Re: OS 7.0.1 and PB 145- need help w/disk image

2005-03-12 Thread Ric
I have downloaded the OS files and they were decompressed by Stuffit. I
have Disk Copy 6.3.3 installed. I seem to be doing something wrong when
trying to disk copy each part to a floppy disk. I have tried simply dbl
clicking on the first file- that creates a large disk image on my desktop,
but no way will it fit onto a floppy. Opening Disk Copy and asking it to
mount a disk does the same. I have also tried simply copying each part as
downloaded onto floppies, but my machine won't boot it. (For these testing
purposes I am usiing a dl of 7.5.3 and a pb 180 assuming the process would
be the same for my intended project.
Can anyone refresh me on exactly to go about transferring these multi-part
downloads onto floppies the first of which will boot and begin install of
an OS. Thanks for your time.

Try booting from the 7.5 Network Access floppy then transferring the parts
via floppy disk. Network access is in the utilities section of the Apple
older software page.

I don't know a way to center it, but you could probably adjust the
Horizontal Position of your screen to move it slightly to the right.
There
are probably several buttons on the front of your monitor to facilitate
 this.

I have noticed for sometime that the black boot up screen that comes up
with
text on it - asking if you
want to do anything - is way off to the left where you really can't read
all
 of it.

Then the Windows XP logo screen comes up and it is centered just fine.

Is there anyway to move it??? I use screen resolution 1024 x 768 and have
a
 l9 monitor. Sure would
 like to center it.

I'm also wondering about the best OS for one of these old 030 Powerbooks.
I have a PB145 running 7.1, which I've been happy enough with; it
seems to have many useful and pretty features (more um, convenient I
guess, than System 6, which I've never installed on a PB), doesn't
have a huge footprint, and allows me to contact the outside via

Re: Older software for Powerbook 320 (looking for)

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with this;
I purchased a PB 320 Duo. A great machine, I'm very happy with it.
But it's a little bit older :-) and so far I only found a couple of games
and utilities for it via the net.
Does anyone know or remember :-) which (great!) software runs
on this type of machine (Greyscale, 68030, 33 Mhz, 80 MB HD)
I would like to do some word processing, maybe a little spreadsheet,
maybe the odd great utlility?
I searched Ebay and did not find much, only a CW 3.x or something
which was quite expensive.
Are there any sites where you can find little old gems?
Thanks

Hold down Control, Command, Option, Power On buttons for 5-10 seconds.
That's it.
The other problem I am experiencing is loosing connection with the battery.
Try cleaning the terminals on the battery.
If the battery doesn't have a full charge it prabably won't boot. Are you
getting the charging icon (lightning bolt) in the menu bar and control
strip? Should also show % charge in the strip.
I recently had to switch adapters because the plug was so worn that
there was only an intermittant connection on the charge side. Ran the
book fine but no battery action unless I wiggled the plug.

Re: pb540 and iomega drives

2004-03-10 Thread Ric
I cannot make my powerbook recognize my iomega drives. I
installed the iomega drivers and when the parade of
extensions goes by, the iomega icon is Xed out.
Is there a trick to getting a powerbook 500 series to
recognize these drives?
Not sure which drive you're trying, but FWIW I'm running
an Iomega 250 Zip on my 540c/7.6.1, Driver version 5.1.1
SCSI ID set to 6 - Termination set to ON. If your drive
doesn't provide termination you'll need an external terminator.

Re: IE browser for powerbook 5300 and OS8.1?

2004-03-08 Thread Ric
I for one would like to know at what point the OLE nightmare ceased.
My 5300 (os 7-7.9? currently 7.2) won't tolerate any exposure to
OLE. My desktop 7500/100 (os 8.6) runs just fine with several OLE
extensions.

Where did you ever find OS 7.2 or 7.9 . They don't exist!!

Re: 540 screen fading to black in the corners

The 540c screen will work fine. Make sure you also get the
ribbon cable that matches the color screen. If you use the existing
one you will still have only grayscale.

If I do have to replace it, is it possible to replace it
  with a 540c screen?

Re: 540c on the mend, but...

2004-02-15 Thread Ric

from what I've read online, a 540c can't play MP3's. Is this correct?
When I re-installed System 7.5, it installed Apple's CD Audio Player.
But this is useless to me because I don't have a CD hooked up to the 540c.
You can try MpegDEC 2.5.3 for mp3's. Performs OK on my 540c except for an
occasional gap due to slow HD. I've still to try it from an ext. drive 8-)
When I had to wipe the the Hard drive I lost the modem drivers and
anything internet related.
The modem is a early model Global Village internal. Beyond that, I
don't know much about it.
Try http://ftp.globalvillage.com for modem SW, go all of the way thru
to disk images for PP500 disk image.
As for internet, I need something like PPP and MacTCP. right?
Try FreePPP 2.6.2, works fine on my machine.
The TCP/IP control panel should have been installed with the system.
Best of luck,
Rick

Re: 540c acting up

2004-02-14 Thread Ric
Hi,

Could possibly be poorly seated RAM, making an intermittant connection.
RAM failure should give an 8 tone chime of death, 4 tones usually
means a hardware failure.
Can you access the HD when booted from the floppy? If so you should at
least be able to do a backup at this point.
If you have the whole system on floppys you could try reinstalling
it. That shouldn't hurt the data.
Apple has a 500 series service manual available for DL. Shows takeapart
procedures, troubleshooting, etc.
Best of luck,
Rick

Re: Installing OS 7.5

2004-02-08 Thread Ric
According to Apple, an enabler is only required for Sys. 7.1
7.6.1 runs fine on my 540c without one.
Look here for more info:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=8970
Rick

Dan,

Actually, I'm installing from floppies, not CD. At what point do I
need to get the enabler, and where and how do I install it? I know
I'll need to get it from Apple's FTP, but I imagine I can handle
that. Do I install it before installing the OS itself?

Thanks for the help, it's appreciated.

Correctly, you can't install older Sys over newer, you must
reformat/initialize first

Re: 520c Ethernet

2003-12-08 Thread Ric
I'm running 7.6.1 on my 540c and have it connected via ethernet
to an 8500/G3. Make sure ethernet is turned on in the extension
manager. Also make sure you have the proper cable type.
A patch cable only works with a router. I believe the one I
had to get was called crossover or maybe straight thru.
The wires are arranged differently in the plug ends.
Good Luck,
Rick
Bookies,
I've chugged away and got this little book running 7.6 (19 home
made floppies) but I can't get ethernet going. It's been a while since I
used OS 7.6, but I think I have everything set right. When I try to set the
book's AppleTalk to ethernet, I get an error has occurred message. AppleTalk
is active, got a transceiver hooked up to the book's AAUI and a rj-45 over
to a G3. Got them to talk via Local talk/printer port, but no go on the
ethernet.

Re: 1400 from Timco Computers

2003-10-26 Thread Ric
DL the 7.5 Network Access boot floppy.

Ric

-- Here's the other issue to all those that can help... I recently purchased
a 1400cs/177/16/770 from Timco computers out of Seattle.
The computer arrived the other day, only to find out that the computer
used to be owned by one of the local school districts, and was passworded
giving no access to the system folder, control panels, extensions etc..
No problem I thought, setup a simple appletalk, go over and blow out the
password program. No dice, completely killed os 8.0. That's not what I
wanted to happen. So being that I do not own a copy of os8 ( OS9, but 16megs
won't install) So I jumped over to apple's website and d/l'ed 7.5.3. with
the 7.5.5updater. The problems is, I don't know how I can split it to
individual floppies to install it on the 1400.. I do not currently have a
burner in the 8600 to burn the image.. So does anyone know how to split the
image into floppies? Or how to make a boot floppy to install?

---Okay here's the deal. I recieved my 540c the other day and after
unpakcing it from the box, tried to get it up and running on the internet.
Well PPP establishes a connection. But either in Netscape 3.01 or IE
3.01 I get Page could not be found because it does not have a DNS. Anybody
get this before? Know what it might be?
