Hi Erik,

I've been looking for a Powerbook for a hack project and the 5300 you
have sounds perfect sonce I will be removing the display and mounting
the whole thing inside an old Apple III monitor case.

PLMK if it's still available and what it would take to get it to me
here in Florida (32905).

Thanks,

Ron

I've got a powerbook 5300cs that I'm offering for the price of
shipping. Rumor has it was working just fine shortly before I

like that old cliche, "better safe than sorry." Which means -- not only
wouldn't I leave a dead battery in my PB, but I'd get rid of them
outright if I were you. Battery acid is nasty stuff, you know.

Since you say BOTH your batteries are dead, GOOD batteries for 5300/190
Powerbooks (Model No. M3254, NiMH) can be had cheap from Nexcomp:

http://www.nexcomp.com

And since my 190 is semi-retired on the count of having gotten a 5300c,
I'm storing it (battery bay empty) in a bedside drawer which normally
stays closed to keep it clean.

I have a 190 that I do that with, and I haven't had any problems, yet. Of
course, I also have a good battery to put in it when I'm about to leave the
house, but I don't see any harm in that, as long as you check to make sure it
isn't leaking, occasionally.

5300cs battery question

2005-06-04 Thread Andy Dunn
I have a 5300cs with two completely dead batteries (one was used up, the other I
received when I purchased a refurbished unit and won't work because of its
age).
I'm just wondering if I'm going to wreck my PB if I leave a dead battery in the
bay;
it never gets warm and there's no sign of leaking. I'm leaving it in to keep
dust
and other debris out of the computer.

The whole adapter or just the cord? All the AC side

The cdroms from 190, 3400, 3500 should fit.
But you can install another os without a cdrom drive. Make a
boot-floppy with network access and install over the net.
Of course you will need a network and a second machine for this.
I installed my 540c and my LC this way.
The 190 and 5300 did not have CDROM. The only choice is an external
through the SCSI port. If you get an Apple-branded model it will work
fine, if you have another type you might need the CDROM driver from
System 7.5.3 to recognize it.

Check around for the different prices on the SCSI adapter. They range from
about $30 to $15 depending on where you look. I don't remember who I got
mine from.

The easiest way to put a CD-ROM on a 5300 is to use an HDI-30 SCSI adapter
and an external SCSI CD-ROM.

No PowerBook CD-ROM drive will fit, the 5300 can't take an internal
CD-ROM drive. You'll need to hook up an external drive.

I sure would like to know what a 190 internal CD-ROM is!
The 3400 and 3500s are quite a bit larger than the 5300. The only
appear to be the same in photographs.

Lets not forget that you can install Mac OS 7.5.3 using floppy disks
(19). And it's free to download from Apple's website.

Listers,
Still working with my new to me 5300cs and was wondering about
something..
Are the 100mhz versions of this laptop plagued by the same un-Godly
slowness of the 1400cs?
I ask, because my 280c starts up almost twice as fast as the 5300
running the same os (7.6.1), and I've stripped 7.6.1 on the 5300 to reflect
what I have on the 280c..
Any ideas?

Get SpeedDoubler for any 5300 running anything less than 8.5. You'll
need SpeedDoubler 8 if you're using 8.1, SpeedDoubler 2 if you stick
with 7.6.1. Older versions don't work with 7.6.

SpeedDoubler's emulation of non-PPC software, especially the OS, is
much better than Apple's.

It really depends on the OS you're using on each, the disk speed, and
memory. Always remember percieved speed is due to a number of factors:
Processor type, processor speed, OS version, memory, bus speed and
video.

7.6.1 is going to run slower on a PowerPC system than a 68040; this was
about midway between Apple's switch to the PPC architecture.

8.1 is where PPC systems started running faster, 8.6 is PPC only.
Also, what you're seeing between the 190 and 5300 with menu scrolling
is the difference in video card, not processor. The processor is coming
into play when you do conversion, memory and bus speed (for VM) is
coming into play when you do the scrolling of large documents.

5300cs Won't Wake Up

2004-07-14 Thread Robert S. Rowan
Dear List,
When I put my 5300cs to sleep, it won't wake up and I have to do a
keyboard restart to get it up and running again. I have 40 megs of
RAM for a total of 56 megs of RAM and the OS is 8.1.

I have tried zapping the PRAM x 10, trashing the finder preference
file and rebuilding the desk top. I have run Norton Disk Doctor and
the Doctor says we're fine. I have tried zapping the PRAM again with
Tech Tool 1.2.1. No dice.

Then I thought, perhaps I was having a conflict with an extension or
two so I started up with the extensions off. Shuzbutt! The 5300 still
died in its sleep. I brought out the heavy guns, Conflict Catcher 8,
and still the 5300 fell into the Big Sleep.

OK I thought, I'll subject the PB to intervention therapy, i.e. a
clean install. Aarrugh! (No need to translate).

My last hope, Reset The Power Manager. So I started up the lap top
with the Command, Option, P & R keys depressed and when the 5300 went
blank and the sleep button shown steady, I restarted with the reset
button on the back. OK, one more time. I pulled the battery,
disconnected the AC power pushed the reset button in the back for 30
seconds plus and reconnected the AC power and I am right back where I
started from in the beginning (except for a new system folder).

Does anyone have any other ideas? My next step is to pop the hood and
remove the PRAM battery (how long should it be disconnected?).
Failing all of this, the Power Book gets wrapped in garlic, I drive a
wooden stake through its CPU and I bury it in the back yard!

The only power adapters they had were for the 5300/190. I dunno if it will
work with the 1400 though. The site is www.shrevesystems.com. Thanks for

Re: what to do with a 5300cs

2004-04-06 Thread Cowboyj
Just out of curiosity, where'd you find an adaptor for $10? Any idea if
they have 'em that cheap for a 1400C?

I have a 5300C that I'm currently using (but I need the AC adaptor to
upgrade to the 1400!), you can use wireless cards with it, like I do,
or light email, typing and surfing. I'd load up on ram if you're gonna
do anything somewhat intensive though. I thikn the limit is somewhere
in the neighborhood of 48MB(?). Try the swap list if you need stuff
like that. Connectix Speed-Doubler and RAM-Doubler help, but not a
whole lot, I've found.

My biggest complaint is the weight and the lack of CD drive. I know the
1400 isn't much better, but it came to me with a G3 upgrade, though I
don't think you can get them for a 5300.

All in all, they're a good machine if you don't do a whole lot other
than typing and light internet stuff, but if you want to run more than
one or two progs at a time, I'd say sell it and get a 1400 or better.

Just my $0.02

Peace,

Jason

Re: 5300cs Can't See Half of RAM

2004-01-18 Thread Simon Horn
Hi,

I have a plain 5300 that I got with the 8 mb on the motherboard plus
an 8 mb expansion for a total of 16 mb.

I later picked up a 16 mb memory expansion card, but when I add it, the
total memory remains 16 mb. What is interesting is that Apple System
Profiler says I have 16 mb: 0 mb (!) on the motherboard and the 16 mb
expansion.

I haven't had the time to really try to figure this out, but I too
would be interested if anyone knows what is going on.

5300cs Can't See Half of RAM

2004-01-16 Thread Tom Saecker
Hi,

Here is the problem: This 5300cs only "sees" half of any RAM module
that you put into it with the exception of an 8MB module. It's
running OS 8.1.

History: It was given to my brother in Olympia, Washington who then
gave it to me. He tried putting the 32MB RAM out of his 190 in this
5300 and it could only see 16mb of it. It sees 8mb of the 16mb RAM
that it came with. I purchased a 48MB RAM module and it only saw 24MB
of it. (This PB has an 8MB motherboard).
When I received my 2nd Powerbook I tried the 8MB RAM chip out of it
in the 1st Powerbook and it couldn't see it at all.

What would be the most likely cause of behavior like this?
I have noticed that the solder trails to the RAM connector in the 1st
5300 are not as clean and bright as the ones in the 2nd 5300.
Is this a bad solder job or a bad motherboard or something else?

I have purchased a 2nd 5300cs through eBay which works well with the
exception of the PRAM battery which is on order. So at this point I
am viewing the 1st 5300 as parts unless it can be repaired cheaply.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

Thanks,

Tom Saecker

Dayna Communicard Plus in 5300cs

2003-12-31 Thread sirksd
I have a PB5300cs running OS8.6. I want to use a Dayna Communicard Plus
28,800/14,000 bps combo Ethernet/Modm card. I get ethernet connections easily
but not modem connections. I cannot get the card to work on dial-up modem in
any computer. The message keeps coming back that the serial port is in use. I
even trashed the Appletalk preferences. Is it the wrong driver or the actual
hardware in the card? I would appreciate the answer or a good driver to use.
(I use their 2.3 driver now)

Fw: Re: 5300cs battery/power question

2003-12-16 Thread Jim Scott
I revived a 5300 that suffered a similar fate (dog ran into the thin adapter
cable, bending the male input plug and breaking the female AC adapter's
plastic housing and loosening the solder connections on the motherboard).

Once I fixed the broken plastic housing and resoldered the three "legs"
that fit into the motherboard, the AC adapter still didn't work. Long story
short, I finally discovered that the braided wire "wrap" inside the outer
plastic wire, which becomes a wire that is soldered to the outer, negative
portion of the AC plug, had been broken right at the plug. Unfortunately,
after voltmeter testing confirmed my worst fears, I had to destroy the plug
to confirm my diagnosis.

I removed the bad portion of the wire and the now-destroyed plug, bought a
right-size adapter from Radio Shack, and brought the laptop back to life via
AC. Your situation probably parallels mine in at least one out of the three
problems I solved.
Good luck!

5300cs battery/power question

2003-12-15 Thread Danny Jones

My 5300cs won't boot.

The power supply has been screwy for some years ever since I had the power
cord stretched across a path in the house and my wife came through chasing
the cat, and... well, anyway...

For some years now, the cord into the machine has had to be *just right* to
charge the battery. It hasn't been too bad of a problem. Whenever I saw
that the battery was draining, I'd play with the power cord in just the
right way until I saw that the battery was charging. If I had enough
battery to power up, I was okay. Actually, if the battery couldn't boot the
machine, I could play with the power cord until I heard the very faint high
pitched whine that told me the machine (and battery) was getting AC power.

I've been using the 5300cs less and less. When I tried to boot it this
month to get my Christmas card list, it was dead as could be. Could not
wiggle the power cord to get it to do ANYTHING.

I took the battery to BATTERIES PLUS to have it reconditioned and recharged.
They told me the battery was in good shape and would hold a charge. I
figured that would be enough to boot the machine, but still I get NOTHING.
:(

Someone suggested to me that I hold the reset buttion in on the back of the
machine for 15 or so seconds, but I get no response at all from the machine.

I could live without the machine, but I really, really want to get my
Christmas card info and genealogy info off the hard drive.

I figure the worst case scenario is that I buy a used, working 5300cs (I

24MB of ram; 500MB HD; 28.800 pmcia slot modem; power cord; no battery?
It needs a new internal battery. Anyone know if this is hard to change? I never
could find a 5300 manual on the net.
Is the vram upgradable to thousands of colors, from hundreds?
This is my biggest turnoff of this machine, is it's hundreds of colors limit, so
far anyway.
Thinking about selling it, unless the internal battery is easy to change, and/or
the vram is upgradeable.
So far it's a word processing machine.

Ours did the same thing - we had to upgrade stage by stage 7.5.5 then 7.6 .1
then 7.6.5 then 8.0 then 8.1 - we went up to 8.6. It worked eventually even
if it was the long way round ( and you need all the systems!)

Re: PowerBook 5300cs & Apple CD-ROM

2003-12-01 Thread Robert Eye
I just got a refurbed PB 5300cs (Apple refurb--sealed in box w/manuals). It's
a sweet little machine, with one problem. It won't recognize my external
Apple CD-ROM drive. I am trying to upgrade to OS 8.1 from 7.5.2 via CD. I've
checked the connections, the extensions, the boot sequence, the SCSI ID, but
nothing seems to get the PB to recognize the drive. Any ideas? TIA, Heather
(My other PBs include: a 1400c (G3 333), a 190cs, 2 190s, a Duo 230, a 170
and a 100)
Heather,

1. Does the CD ROM drive work on the other PBs you have that can
handle a SCSI CD ROM? And, assuming the CD ROM works with your other
PBs, one can assume that the cable you are using is completely
functional?

2. When you say it does not recogonize the CD ROM, does that mean
that it does not recogonize it either by doing the 4-finger salute*
at start-up to boot from the CD ROM drive (holdng down just the C key
doesn't seem to work on my 5300cs, IIRC), or by booting from the HD
and having the CD ROM display on the desktop?

3. Does the 5300cs recogonize any other attached SCSI device?

It's kind of hard for me to tell from your post as to what you have
tried and what remains unknown.

I would think that if 1 and 2 are "yes", then 3 would likely be "no"
and you have a bad SCSI connection on the 5300cs. If all three are
"yes" (i.e., the CD works on other PBs, the CD ROM drive won't boot
or show up on the 5300cs, and the 5300cs recogonizes other SCSI
devices), beats me. :-) It may be a termination issue, but if the CD
ROM drives works on the other PBs, it should show up on the 5300cs.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Dallas, TX
*holding down command-option-shift-delete during boot overrides the
selected start-up disk and boots from the next available disk with a
valid System Folder (you probably knew this, but I'm putting it here
for completeness)

P.S. Where did you get a "new" refurb 5300cs?

Hello Heather,
Just a thought: presuming that you are connecting your external SCSI CD
drive via an HD-30 adapter, do you know for sure that this adapter is
known-to-be-good? Also, on the back of the CD drive itself, the following
pins should be jumpered:
"Parity" - "Term Power" - and 0 and 1 (totalling "3" in binary for your SCSI
ID; but you knew that ;-)
sometimes I have had trouble with a CD drive only to discover that the term
power jumper simply fell off - it's just a thought.
Best regards,
Dana

I haven't tried timing boot-up, etc., to see if it made a difference, but
due to all the interest, I set up my 540c with a 128mb CF for the system,
and a separate 64mb CF for virtual memory. Didn't seem to boot OK until I
reduced VM to about 50+ mb (don't remember exact amount). Doesn't seem any
different from running w/ just 1 CF, but somebody more knowledgeable might
be able to use this info.

Booting my 5300cs from a CF card - success!! (was Re: 5300 ???)

2003-11-20 Thread Robert Eye
I had attempted an install of 8.1 after formatting the card as you
would any other Mac HD. Maybe there's a problem with where it writes
the driver on a newly formatted card? Perhaps I have to run DIsk
Doctor and Speed Disk on it right after the install?

I may pull out the 5300cs tonight or tomorrow and try some more
debugging. If I find out anything interesting, I'll post.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Answering my own post ...

I pulled out the 5300cs last night and tried to boot with the CF card
in. Bus Error.

I couldn't get the card out except to paper clip it out. I went ahead
and booted the PB normally, then inserted the card. It was read just
fine.

Next, I opened Drive Setup (version 1.7.3, under MacOS 8.1) and
checked the CF card. It said there was a problem with the driver and
the driver could not be upated but the disk could be formatted. Hmmm
... Now we're getting somewhere ...

I went ahead and (re-)formatted the CF card as a HFS Mac disk, one
partition. I then rebooted the PB withe CF card installed and ... NO
BUS ERROR! WOOHOO!

Next, I did a drag-and-drop transfer of the major system elements,
selected the CF as the boot disk and rebooted .. and ... the PB
booted from the CF card!

For those of you who like numbers (in min:sec):

Time to boot, 775 MB HD: 1:28
Time to boot, 775 MB HD Extensions Disabled: 0:58
Time to boot, 128 MB CF: 1:25
Time to boot, 128 MB CF Extensions Disabled: 0:56
(Number of extensions roughly the same. Boot time measured from
screen light up to complete desktop. YMMV.)

So boot time with the CF card is comparable to booting with the HD.
Newer higher RPM drives (> 2 GB) will no doubt beat the CF card.

There is only one issue I could find in all this .. I changed the CF
card's icon from it's default icon to a custom one (Star Trek TOS
shuttlecraft, if you must know :-) ). It could be, I guess, that this
somehow caused the CF card disk driver to become corrupted. (?) So
it's the plain generic CF card icon for me from now on. Hopefully the
more routine operations with the card won't corrupt the driver.

Anyway, my PB 5300cs now seems to be bootable from a CF card! Now to
get a larger card than the 128 MB I have - it barley holds the
stripped System Folder with no apps. I guess I misjudged the size I
would need. Oh, well, the 128 MB CF can go into the camera ...
perhaps I'll get a microdrive ... yeah, that's it ...

Hope this helps someone else.

Regards,

Bob Eye

Thank you, gentlemen. I've three 5300's, and a 190cs. One of the
5300's (after a top lid plastics transplant--someone put the wrong
screws in the wrong place, and the lid came apart in my hands when I
closed it) is now in the hands of a friend who had to fight off all the
aluminum foil beanie wearers in the local library just to get e-mail
from her kids. (AFBW's seem to come out of the woodwork in the
Northeast Kingdom of Vermont...) She can now do e-mail at home, and
just as a BTW, thinks PC's are stone age compared to Apple. Score
another one for the forces of good.

So I've a 190cs with lots of ghosting (horizontal lines only) on the
screen, an extra 5300 cs screen, and a compulsion to see if the ghosting
will go away with the 5300 screen. Thanks for the reassurance, and I'll
let you know if I let too much of the blue smoke out of the 190, and if
the ghosting is fixed.

Checked Drew's 5300 FAQ, but nothing there. Thanks.
Hmm, I guess I should have made that more clear.

The 190cs screen and 5300cs screen are cross-compatible. It
shouldn't be a problem to swap one for the other (assuming they come
with their individual cables).

Peace,

No. The card to get, as others have mentioned is the MV16EN which gives
you 16 bit color out, and a built-in ethernet. I have one in my 5300C,
very nice.

Data Memory Systems (http://www.datamem.com look in the clearance

The Lapis is a good choice for installation where an external video port
is not present, or even replacement of an existing Apple external video
port.

The Apple port is the same across 190 and 5300s.

The Lapis port is unique for 190s and 5300s.

For 5300s, the ones which are being liquidated most of the time, it is
the Lapis MV16EN, which offers 16 bit color and UTP Ethernet in one
component.

The softare install is a little bizarre, but the card works well. The
only drawback is its large "dongle".

Batteries for 190s/5300s have consistently been available brand-new for
in the $20.95 area for some time now. I think I bought six off if eBay.

Lapis MV16ENs (5300s only) have consistently been avaiable brand-new for
in the $9.95 area for some time now. I bought four, one for each of my
color 5300s.

My "road Apples" (I usually take two) are a 5300c and a 5300ce, each with
a Lapis card, and each with a USR/Megahertz 56K PCMCIA card (with
X-Jack). One set of cables are shared between the two.

Oh, I have a 5300 docking station, but I haven't modified it to
incorporate the Lapis "dongle" in the place of its normal Apple external
video adapter cable.

The Apple card was 8 bit IIRC.

The dongles are quite different the apple one is grey and just has a
connector for the video. The Focus one is black with a thin cable leading
to a HUGE black lump which has two sockets one for video, one for Ethernet.

Powerbook 5300cs question

2003-11-10 Thread Todd Naber
Hi Listers,
I purchased a grayscale 5300 way back when they were first released for
$1350 and it was a total headache. Then I didn't know much about Powerbooks
and it was running 7.5.2 (that was the problem). After a few months of
visits to the Apple Dealer and a few times sending it to Apple, the dealer
agreed to buy it back from me. Well a few weeks ago I purchased a Powerbook
5300cs at a thriftstore for $30. Everything was intact except for a Power
supply (got one on eBay-Mint/Sealed in an original box). Got the Power
Supply and shazam- I find out the 5300cs has 40mb of ram, a 500mb hard drive
and the battery lasts almost 2 hours!
My question is it does have a Video Out port already in place (I have a
cable and have used it with an external monitor) but do all the 5300cs' have
this stock or was it ordered this way? If you have a 5300 you MUST go to
that nexcomp.com website that was posted a few days ago! Batteries for
$24.95 (unbelievable- I bought two). They list a Focus Enhancements 16-bit
Video Card for the 5300- is the one I have (if it was the one Apple
installed as an option) a 16 bit card as well? Any help would be
appreciated.
Peace, Todd

Have you tried removing the battery, and mains for about 10
minutes, then plugging the mains in (the green light above the
screen may well glow at any point here) and holding down the
reset button on the back for about 20 secs. Then, if it hasn't
booted already, try the power button. I had one that did this
and the dead battery must have been draining the power from
something. Also, if this fails, try removing the PRAM battery
and repeating the above (poss a small chance removing this might
destroy the motherboard?? but then i'd guess its dead already if
it doesn't work). They can be hard to restart if they've been
stored for a while.

> Well, my 5300cs has 16M on the motherboard,

yeah, i think its the later 5300cs and 5300cs's that have this.
My 5300cs has 16Mb onboard.

Well, my 5300cs has 16M on the motherboard, meaning this card is a 40M
card. That's kind of an oddball size, and I seem to recall that the 5300
series had a max RAM of 56M. If this is right, I'm going to guess that
this is really a 48M card, intended to be used with the 8M motherboards.

Firstly, are you sure you have 16MB of RAM on the motherboard?
AFAIK, the only machine that had 16MB of RAM on the mobo (stock) was
the 5300ce/117MHz.

I don't know where the idea that the 5300 series tops out at 56MB
started, but it's not true. You can put up to 64MB of RAM into the
5300. This idea probably started as the result of original Apple
documentation stating that the largest supported RAM expansion card
is only 48MB. 48MB + 8MB = 56MB. However, with the 5300ce, you get
16MB on the motherboard. 16 + 48 = 64. Later, RAM card
manufacturers began producing 56MB RAM cards that top out the
5300/8MB to 64MB.

What you've probably found is a 48MB RAM card. This might sound
really dumb to you, but are you _sure_ of your previous total RAM
adding up to 48MB? I'd bet that you really only had 8MB of RAM on
board and with the 32MB card, that totaled 40MB.

Anyway, the card should work fine with your 5300c/cs.

(It's amazing how much of a difference a screen upgrade makes on this
series, isn't it?)

Peace,
Drew

Maxing Out 5300cs RAM

2003-11-08 Thread Jason
Today I was at a flea market and found a 5300c for sale for $15. It had a
broken power jack, but it was complete. I figured I could part it out for
more than that if I couldn't get it running.

Well after soldering a new jack onto the motherboard, I reassembled the
machine and tried it out. I got a pop from the speaker and that was about
it. I figure it's parting out time.

I took the 5300c screen and replaced my 5300cs's with it; I never would
have thought that would make such a difference! While I had my 5300cs
open for the screen transplant, I put the RAM card that was in this
machine into it, so I could check to see what size it was. To my
surprise, when I fired the machine back up, I opened the About this
Computer, and it reported back 56M.

If this is so, is there any problem with me using this card, even though
I'm not using the last 8M of it? The card it replaced is a 32M card, so
really I'm only gaining 8M, but if this one will work fine, why put the
smaller one back in?

Thanks in advance,

J White

OK,
I think we just don't have enough options here.
I'm going to suggest that you pick up another scsi device to work with
here.
either another cd (one that works) or maybe a syquest drive.
This will take at least a few days to round up on ebay or some such,
maybe you're lucky and have a local source for old hardware.
One of the larger syquest drives would be a nice way to go. Bootable,
large enough capacity to hold a system and the 8.6 installer, nice
versatile
device to have around and cheap.
keep us posted.

As I understand from the recommendations, 8.1 is about the optimum OS for a
5300. What are you trying to upgrade to. On downloads, you might have to
find another mac user so that the disk is "bootable" from mac standards. I
have had this problem if not using toast when creating a cd for my mac.

Re: 5300cs upgrade woes

2003-10-29 Thread Jim Oiler
OK,
let's back up a bit to make sure we're not missing a point here.
You've got the 5300cs with no system right now?
or do you have system 8 on there still?
When you try to boot from the CD you get what?
does the drive spin-up?
You are holding down the "c" key to boot from the CD?
You have termination accounted for on the little scsi chain?

The install cd you are trying to boot from does have an active system
on it?

I know these questions are pretty rudimentary, I just want to be sure
we all know
where you are on this problem.

What does the connector on the back of the mac look like if it is a hole
then I do not think the combo card is fitted if it is a clip then possible
as that is what mine looks like.

Can you mail me a pic of the connector off list and I will be able to tell
you straight away.

Re: 5300cs upgrade woes

2003-10-29 Thread vicki
Hi

With the video /ethernet card.

There should be a dongle that attaches to the rear next to the scsi port if
the connector fits into the book then chances are it is just a monitor
connector.

But if the connector sits out and clips on with hooks at either end chances
are you just need to find the dongle .

Also check your apple talk folder, if you have ethernet as one of the
choices that¹s another way to tell as the 5300 has no built in ethernet. so
for it to be a choice the drivers must have been loaded and the hardware
there for it to see.

5300cs upgrade woes

A second question. I can tell by looking inside the computer that this
computer has been through the REA program but how do I tell if it has had
the Video/10bT Ethernet upgrade? Is the connector going to be the same RJ45
I would expect or is it more hidden to me like the SCSI port was?

It appears that you might not have received a User Guide with your PowerBook 5300cs.
If this is the case, you may wish to download the Manual from the Apple Support
website as follows:

The "on/off switch is the button in the top right of the keyboard. It's a triangle
pointing to the left. However, it doesn't function the same way as one does on a PC.
It will start the Powerbook up once pushed, but shutting down is done best using the
"special" menu, and selecting shut down. If it ever freezes, restart by holding the
command (open apple)-control and reset(triangle pointing to the left in the upper
right)

Not sure what you mean by that.

Basic software that wil work well for you is Appleworks either 5 or 6, you should be
able to find it on Ebay, or on the LEM swap list. If you have OS 8.1 or better you
should be able to get MS Office 2001, or Office 98 or 97. They all still work well,
and will do just about anything you'll need.
> d) how do i connect this to a switch with RJ45-ports? How to install TCP/IP?

If you need ethernet, that what those two little buttons on the left are about. you
can get a PCMCIA card that either has ethernet, or a 33, 56k, etc modem, or both on
the same card. You'll need a dongle to go with it, but they work fairly well. TCP/IP
comes standard and can be found in the TCP/IP control panel.

Hope this helps. Treat your 5300 with respect, and you should enjoy it very much,

First of all... ah, ah, ah. ...

Then.

a) where is that damn on/off-switch? I thought it's the two little "buttons"

Top right corner the key with the arrow facing left.

b) does this work with a missing or defective akku? just as a "stand-alone"

Yes, you don't even need the battery to be in.

c) if i ever get it to run: what cheap/free software (I go to school...)
would you recommend to do texts and maybe "a little" website-editing; chat
sometimes and have telnet/www-sessions. which leads to...

d) how do i connect this to a switch with RJ45-ports? How to install TCP/IP?
If you mean ethernet you need a PC card, but
first try to sort things out, then we'll halp you
configure the Mac on the ethernet.

OK, I've read over the comments and have a few more questions.

Bruce mentioned an internal video board replacement that at 8 bucks seems
like a great idea, especially with the 10-base-T Ethernet port. My only
question on that one is: Is this something that I would be able to do on my
own, or should it be handled by someone with more experience (I have a
reasonable amount of experience with upgrading WinTel machines)
Laptops or Desktops?

If you have experience working in the guts of a laptop, then it's easy.

If you've got decent hand-eye co-ordination, patience and some aptitude
for taking apart complex mechanisms, and putting them back together
*and* have them work after, then you can do it. (Can you rebuild a
carburetor? No sweat then) (of course, I'm showing my age...most people
would say "Carburetor? What's that? Isn't that something they put in
cars like the Model T?" ;-)

If not, then I'd leave it to a pro.

A long time ago I wrote a message to this list with the details of how I
did it on mine. It was pretty straightforward. I'll see if I can find
it, or perhaps some kind soul, more organized than I can repost it.

Unfortunately, I did not keep those directions... Maybe Bruce will
dig them up... However, if you don't already have the service manual
for the 5300, you can try following the directions I give in my 5300
FAQ for upgrading the video card.

Give it a look at and
tell me if it's easy enough for you to follow. It's the last Q&A on
the page.

After you have maxed out the ram and hdd and got the pcmcia cards you want.
Send me the plastics and I will cut the apple logo in the rear and spray
the plastics white for you (make it look like a compact ibook) Free of
charge but only to you as I have spare paint from the last one I did. If you
want pics I can send some. Also give me another week or so as my kids are
still suffering from summer colds and I am having a bit of a ruff time
during the day with them. (they can't seem to shake it and the doctor says
just rest them) NOT POSSIBLE WITH A 2 AND 1 year old THEY JUST WANT TO
PLAY.

Really just some basic word processing when away from home and being able to
do a little surfing the net when the other computer is tied up. Money is the
concern because past a certain point it just seem like it would be better to
get a newer system

Re: 5300cs Part II

2003-08-10 Thread Clark Martin
At 5:57 PM -0500 8/6/2003, Mac Price wrote:
OK, I've read over the comments and have a few more questions.

First as much as I can figure out to tell you about it at the moment:

It is a 5300cs (what is the cs for btw? I thought color screen at first, but
then noticed that there was also a c)
Model CPU Res LCD Depth Base Memory
5300100MHz 640x480 passive mono4 8
5300cs 100MHz 640x480 passive color 8 8 or 16
5300c 100MHz 640x480 Active color8 or 16 8 or 16
5300ce 117MHz 800x600 Active color16 16
It's Running Mac OS 8.0

At least up that to OS 8.1

It has a 750 meg HD (HD Question: It seems I have two different answers
about max size of HD allowed, but it may be more just a question of OS. One
of the people that responded had mentioned putting a 20 gig drive in but I
recall reading that there may be problems with drives larger than 8.2 gigs
on versions lower than 8.6. Is this correct?)

I had the 20Gb and it was using OS 8.6 and 9.1. The OS won't limit
the drive size but it will limit the partition size. I think OS 8
though is okay for large disks.

I assume from the 750 meg HD and the fact that it has 48 megs RAM that I
have 16 Megs of Ram onboard and 32 in a Module (which raises my next
question, is another memory upgrade worth the cost as I would be essentially
be paying $103 for 16 megs more memory)

It depends on what you want to do with it and how much you are
willing to spend. I got the upgrade but that was from 32 to 64.
