The 5x0 series uses a PDS type slot inside the bay to connect the PC Card cage. The later NuBus PowerBooks have the slots physically wired to the motherboard. Even if that weren't true, you'd have to take all of the electronics along with them (TREX IC, etc). So, upgrading a 5x0 with another PowerBooks PC Card slots isn't possible. Thats why i was wondering weather i could take the cage from a 5300 or 190 or 1400 and refit it in the case for the 5xx cage. Has anyone tried this. Not possible. The 500 has no support, per se, for PCMCIA, but it does have access to the NuBus through the left slot. The Rev. A PCMCIA adapter adds a chip which translates PCMCIA to MuBus, the other machines mentioned have this capability already on their motherboards. The Rev. B adapter fixes some problems with the Rev. A, but it is the same chip and the same artwork. The Rev. C adapter fixes all problems and adds PPC support, and it is a completely new card, with a new chip and artwork. For maximum flexibility, get a Rev. C adapter. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... So, if you've got a second Mac w/ a CD-ROM drive, it would be easy to set up a simple network to install whichever version of the OS you want to install. There is no Appletalk software on the target system to allow this, so this won't work quite like this. There IS a networking boot floppy image buried in Apple's archives. The readme is here http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/ Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/ Network_Access_Disk_7.5.txt The file is in the same directory.* It allows network access via the printer port only, so if you're going to install OS 8 this way, it'll easily be an overnight job, and still don't know if it'll work. Worth a try, though. boot up the 550c with it, mount the 550c on the host system, see if OS 8 will install from there. The only other way to do this is to find another Mac with a SCSI port, and use a SCSI Disk-mode cable on the 550 to mount it as a drive on the other system. Install OS X for any Mac if the host system is a PPC machine, otherwise you get an unbootable system. Also, when it comes time to upgrade to 8.1 (which I suggest) copy the 8.i installer to the 550 and run it from there. The upgrade offers no choice of systems to install to, it installs for whatever processor the host system is. Run it from a PPC host, you get a PPC version of 8.1 on the system. THAT'S why I installed OS 8 three times on my 540c ;-) * Something that just struck me. I was wrestling with finding a bunch of different driver s and updates for some of those OTHER kinds of computers yesterday, and all the filenames are things like SR34576A.exe and such. How come NO OTHER company names their files in a human readable format? I mean, you download video, sound and ethernet drivers from Gateway, you get three folders labeled 65-8876, 92-4522, and 12-4709 or some such. Which model ATA-SCSI adapter are you using? Did you initialize the drive on the adapter, or off the adapter on a native ATA machine? What utility did you use to initialize the drive? I suspect you have an ADTX adapter (such as came on the OEM Apple 1GB drive.) If so you can only use the first ~8GBs of the drive, anything beyond that will be (or will become) a scrambled mess. Here's my page on the subject of adapters: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/pb_scsi_ata.html Running system 8.1 I have a pcmcia cage but it is a revision b is the cage from another mac able to be swapped because if so i have a pcmcia flash drive 512.mb and an orinoco card that i can use. AFAIK, you can't use a rev B on a PPC 'Book, but give it a try anyway, might work after all. Here's a couple of replies to some of the other suggestions you've received. First, you can use a network access disk (NAD) to install stuff over an ethernet network, but you'll proably have to roll your own NAD for a PPC PB500, here's my helpful page on the subject: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/nad.html Secondly, I'll suggest (if you have the installer) using OS 9.1, which I have on both of my 167MHz PBs 500: http://members.aol.com/dankephoto/ppc_upgrade/86patch.htm I love using 9.1 on a PB500, though others may disagree. You've got the drive space and pace, as well as well as (I assume) maxed out RAM. It's really a good thing to have a SCSI cable and a CD drive for your 'Book. Powerbook 550c parts
I just obtained a 550c from a friend; if anyone has any interest in the part I will not need: - a Japanese layout keyboard, but each key also has the corresponding (I guess) English letter character. It has almost the same arrangement as an English keyboard. - a NuPower card with 167Mhz power PC, - 32MB memory module, and, - a 750MB hard drive, with KanjiTalk7.5.5, the Japanese OS, but the previous owner says it is completely compatible with English 7.6 and 8.0 Let me know, Craig W.
