If you're getting an A: prompt, then the problem is that someone has
secretly replaced your Powerbook 190 with a cheapo PC laptop. ;-)

These are classic signs that the power connector is loose inside the
PB. Open it up, resolder it, and put a bug glob, as other posters have
said, of hot glue over it. Epoxy also works well.

Also, please edit your replies! This last message contained no less

Pushing my power supply hookup to the right or left and even pressing it more firmly
will get a boot all the way to the "A:" prompt. I'll look into the glue thing too, but
my female end of the power supply on the 190 is distinctively loose.

I've ended up with a PB 190 which has a cable with the female end
lose. Unless I press to oneside or the other, it will power up with
the Mac sound but will shut off immediately. I'm going to trim the
area around the hookup and solder it a bit tighter to see if that
works. The female connection is definitely loose. Mine is a color
190.

The AC plug is probably loose and needs to be resoldered down. I
would also reinforce the plug with some hot glue.

Re: powerbook 190 termination

2004-05-01 Thread ACFX44501
>Page 54 of the Powerbook 190 User manual says (in the middle of the
>page) that "Your powerbook is not internally terminated".

What the book doesn't say is the PowerBook does not power the TERMPWR
line, so any external terminator (whether that terminator is internal to
a drive or external to a drive) *must* be attached to a SCSI chaing which
includes at least one external device which also provides terminator
power TO the bus. Theoretically *all* external devices could provide this
power, and there would be not problem if one or several external devices
were powered off, as long as one of these were powered on.

In-line terminators always expect terminator power to be provided FROM
the bus, namely the TERMPWR line, which is Pin 25 on a 50-pin N-SCSI
cable.

The only way such a terminator will function as expected is if at least
one of the external devices provides terminator power, because the
PowerBook surely won't. It can't, by design.

2004-02-24 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
The 5300 motherboard does need a battery board.
Also the 190 trackpad is better than a 5300 pad, as it is clickable.
In fact I recently put a 190 trackpad on a 5300 and it works...
wonder why the 5330 did not ship with the upgraded trackpad...

BTW. does any of you know how many video cables exist?

I have a 5300ce screen active matrix and would like to install it in
this 5300 that Apple sent back with a B/W after the REA repair
extension program.

Yes, I did send an old broken 5300ce the very last day and Apple
repaired at no cost, but when I booted it up, actually 1-2 months
later (all in all we do trust Apple, shouldn't we?), I discovered
that they had replaced the flickering old active matrix with a grey
scale one.

So now I have the screen, which I had bought on the e-bay , but I
cannot get to install it because the grey scale screen had a
different video cable, although I hope the inverter board is the same.

All the components are interchangable, apart from some RAM and the third
party Focus video cards. 190 motherboards can display on some
5300 screens. I've used a 5300cs screen with a 190 and a 5300c screen
should be alright. You may have trouble with a 5300ce screen on a 190,
though it could work.

The 5300 motherboard does need a battery board.
Also the 190 trackpad is better than a 5300 pad, as it is clickable.

I'm not sure. But I do have a working 190 color screen pull from a
working 190. No dead pixels, cables intact, good backlight, plastics
not usable, etc.

There's a take-apart manual at:

16 Mb download.

When you take the plastics off the screen, make sure that you don't swap
self-tapping screws for the machine-thread screws. That's why the
plastics are unuseable. Should take about 20 minutes to swap screens.

Hi List-

I was wondering if anyone has a PowerBook 190 adaptor for sale? Or at
least
a direction to point me in for a low cost alternative.

Thanks!

Scott
I was nosing around Shreve Systems the other day and saw them for some
ridicously low price like five bucks. Battery chargers were around the
same price.

Re: Powerbook 190 overclocking/detonation

2003-07-26 Thread Josh Watson
Hi all,

Hmm, well now that more than 1 person has reported this, i took a look at my own
190, and it has connections in exactly the same place (they are nicely soldered
though). Looks like it is a standard mod - just hand soldered on one and not on
the other.

Evan, I'd try the suggestions mentioned before for that 5300 with the same
problem (take the battery out and power it up, etc) as I think i *broke* my
190cs, whereas the others had a problem before.

Incidentally, surely Apple realised these 'books were going to just drop apart
when they built them - just took the keyboard, HDD and trackpad out to check
that, and two of the bits where the screws go in fell off! I hadn't even
overtightened or cross-screwed them!

I've given up on my dead 190cs (it was REA'd and everything :(), as its still
only good for making loud static and whistling noises. I feel my old 190 is
going to get a nice new case and screen...

This means i'll have most of a 190 in good parts. Anyone in the UK (or wanting
to pay postage to the US) want any of them?

Josh

Re: Powerbook 190 overclocking/detonation

2003-07-25 Thread Evan MacBeth

Hi again,

I picked up a cheap-ish 190cs on eBay a while ago and earlier tonight tried to
upgrade it with an apple video card and IR board, and replace the RAM board. It
used to work slightly dodgily, so I thought the RAM board might have been fried.
However I got the old green light when I restarted it. I tried booting it
without the battery and it started to make an "interesting" burning plastic
smell... Anyway - it may well now be a gonner, but I took it apart to have a
look and it has several dodgy looking modifications to the motherboard. I wonder
if it has been overclocked unstabily - the mods are (i have no idea about
circuit diagrams in ASCII, so wish me luck):
Further to this, my 'book 190's just packed up with the exact same
problem as this. I've had it for about a year now, so it's worked for a
while. But it has been sitting on the shelf for a couple of months -
since I got a 5300. Could this period of hibernation have something to
do with the problem perhaps?

Cheers,
Evan.

Yeah, i just wonder what they were trying to do to it??

I haven't got a digi camera myself, which was why I posted the ASCII pics. I'll
try and borrow one from a friend - I might be able to put some pics up on the
web tomorrow night.

Also, when I now turn it on (its outside the case), I just get a radio

Cheers for any suggestions as to what someones done to this 'book?

Re: Powerbook 190 case top?

2003-06-29 Thread Jim Scott
Yep, greyscale tops are thinner than the color tops. The screen size
(smaller) and plastic surround are different too. However, the width and
height are the same dimensions. It's not a boring question if you've got a
cracked color lid/top and a good greyscale lid/top, because they won't
interchange and fit properly. -- Jim

Re: Powerbook 190?

2003-02-23 Thread Nick
Well, I would definately check those specs! 40 meg HD? That is extremely
small, and could barely hold 7.5.5! Actually, I don't even think it could.
My guess is it has 40megs free on the HD. Like John said run Apple System
Profiler on it. I am positive it was installed with 7.5.5, but just
incase. take it with you on a floppy. When you come back from checking
it, out please let us know what it does have.

Hope This Helps.

Re: Powerbook 190?

I don't know if it was included with OS 7.5.5, but it may be worth starting
up Apple System Profiler on it... If it wasn't installed in 7.5.5, chuck it
on a floppy and bring it with you. In the 'System Profile' tab, under
'Hardware Overview' it'll tell you the processor type, and the Motherboard
Model. (Along with all kinds of other stuff...)

As for the Price Tag, I'd talk them down a LOT before thinking about it if I
were you... 8MB Ram, 40 Meg HD, sounds like it is going to have trouble
keeping up with even simple tasks without some kind of upgrade... $NZ250 is
more than that machine is worth, even if it IS a 5300... My 1400c/133 was
under $AU200 with 1.3 GB and 64 MB Ram.

Hi Mad Dog,

first I will try if an Apple shop here will do it as part of the Apple

At http://www.macfaq.net/troubleshooting.html I found short instructions
how to take apart Apple computers.

Thanks Georg

This sounds like the AC plug on the motherboard is loose. If you are
willing to take your computer apart, it should be easy to fix with a
soldering iron and a bit of solder.

Re: Powerbook 190

2002-08-21 Thread Georg Portenkirchner

Thanks for the information!
No there are no AA added to the serial number.
I found information on the 5300/190 repair programme on Apple's website.
according to that the programme last 7 years after the manufactoring has
stopped.
As that was in 1996 I still might have the chance to get it for free.
Have to talk to a Apple shop here.

Thanks for the help

Georg

If your 190 has "AA" added as a suffix to its serial number, it has
already
been through the recall for powering and other problems.

One of the fixes added in that recall was to replace the motherboard OR to
replace the power connector so that intermittent connections such as you
describe won't happen.

My 190s/5300s all have this "AA" and none of them have powering problems.
In
fact, they are completely trouble-free.

I believe the 190/5300 recall is long since over.
