Wasn't one of those people at NeXT Steve Jobs? It's much easier to

It could, but it seems unlikely that a culture as entrenched as the one at
IBM will suddenly flip, for better or worse. I would imagine that mainframe

If we're measuring the distance from the front of the frog's feet to the
pond, it doesn't matter how big the frog is. Yes, the jumps become
imperceptible, but frogs aren't especially good at measuring half the
distance, either.

One advantage of Gmail is the ability to configure it to send from multiple
addresses. That only works if you remember to change the "From" address,
though. And, since, as Ed said, ProFox passes certain addresses straight
through, resending the original post seemed like a good idea when I

Re: [NF] Do you prefer Digest Mode?

2017-06-12 Thread Jerry Wolper
For a list like ProFox, where the ability to interact in real time, or at
least its email equivalent, is really useful when trying to solve a
problem, Digest Mode is probably not a good idea.

There are lists where timeliness is less crucial, though, and seeing their
contents once a day is fine. As Kurt pointed out, it's incumbent on the
digest recipient to format responses properly.

You mean no harm, Al. Gene means no harm. Neither do I, nor most anyone

Having said that, if it's visible to the user, and there's a perceived
issue, or especially if there's a client request, what does it hurt to
change the terminology? It'll be less hassle to change the strings than to
fight about it.

Re: Can This SQL Be Simplified?

2015-11-10 Thread Jerry Wolper
I'm afraid I'm rusty at this, and don't have access to VFP or its
documentation at the moment, but how about something like

select first.funccode, first.unitmeas from cwkf first, cwkf second;
where first.funccode = second.funccode;
and first.unitmeas <> second.unitmeas;

group by funccode, unitmeas;
into cursor varmints

You might want to throw a DISTINCT into the appropriate place to return
single values.

If this isn't perfect, I hope it at least points in the right direction.

To be clear, I wasn't suggesting that the original post should have been
tagged [OT], just that as long as it's not tagged that way, it goes to all
ProFox subscribers, including those who've specified Tech. In fact, since
most Fox development involves building systems of one size or another, I'm

Alan,

It's simple. If you send it to ProFox, and there's no [OT] in the subject,
it goes to all ProFox subscribers. If, as rarely happens anymore, there's
an [OT] in the subject, it won't get sent to ProFoxTech subscribers. As has

[NF] Laptops and list archives

2015-10-20 Thread Jerry Wolper
I'm now looking for a laptop, and checked the archive, where I found
several helpful posts. I'll happily listen to anyone else's suggestions.
(Ted, what did you end up buying this spring?)

While I was looking, I had to scroll through many posts that were long
because the quoted responses were several levels deep. (There were also the
responses to both ProFox and ProFoxTech, which just leaves duplicates,
since they're the same list; Tech is just filtered.) So, as much of a pain
as it can be to trim posts, especially in a system like Gmail with its
obnoxious default, please do. Thanks.

Dumping excess pollution in the air can't be good for anybody's health,
even if they're not killing anyone in the car. Of course, who knows what
other shortcuts they're willing to take? That could include some with
immediate safety implications.

All it takes is one employee who needs the job, or thinks it would be a
good idea to circumvent evil regulations. I'd like to think I wouldn't do

Hmm. For the ISP, all those £7 surcharges add up. It's probably worth

Still, I'm here to talk about it which in itself is a miracle I

I thought it was because M$ did such a good job of using their OS

I had VisiCalc on my TRS-80 Model I. Who ported it to that?

Personal Software also had the original distrivution rights for
Infocom, and only sold Zork I for the TRS-80. They then decided to
put all their eggs in the spreadsheet basket and gave up on the
games. So the TRS-80 may have been one of the machines they
originally did a version of VisiCalc for (and I'll believe the
article when it says there was a DOS version), but they rose and fell
on the Apple II.

I have incremental search already turned on. Because this is not a

RE: [NF] Looking for name of algorithm

2014-06-18 Thread Jerry Wolper
 Malcolm,
It is very closely linked with something called the Monte Carlo
Method of sampling (even though you are distributing no sampling)
but the concepts are the same.

Now I'm confused. I thought Monte Carlo was estimating a distribution
by running (or simulating) the function many times and generating a
set of results. This doesn't strike me as a particularly useful way
to allocate results evenly to buckets, especially if you already have
the actual distribution.

if you Only get ProFoxTech - you would Still be getting Both

ProFoxTech is just ProFox with the OTs filtered out. So any non-OT
post to ProFox goes to the Tech list, and anything sent to both, like
Kurt's Reply-To-All, appears twice.

For the record, I've been seeing several double posts that turn out

Re: [NF] Our Love Affair with the Tablet is Over

2014-02-25 Thread Jerry Wolper
Interesting. I saw the inability of a Dr. to go with the flow
within his field of study. If he could defy the trend on this,
would he also NOT follow suit in focusing on trends like obesity
and heart disease while still doing the same treatment(s) he did
 twenty years earlier?

I'm with Ricardo here. I don't care if the doctor keeps making notes
on a clipboard, as long as he practices medicine well. And if he has
to choose between studying the latest medical techniques or the
latest document entry system, I want him to choose medicine every
time.

If he can use a tablet to shoot photos of possible problems, great.
If he has to relearn how to shoot those photos every year, it becomes
a problem. Tying it back to us, a better OS or DBMS is a good thing.
But new isn't always better, and if there's a three-month learning
curve every couple years to get back to providing the same services
we provide, that's not a good thing.

2013-06-27 Thread Jerry Wolper
At the time I knew some people who worked at Granada television
Studios and they had just finished filming a series called Space
 1999 (http://www.crazyabouttv.com/space1999.html )so we borrowed
some of the set which included the base station computer.
flashing lights, levers, tape spools whizzing to and fro etc, etc
and poked the little keyboard of the 1501 through the main seta and
 went live.

Nice to know that something useful came out of Space:1999. Every now
and then, I get to see a '60s or '70s TV show where whirring tape
drives represent a computer.

I am not a professionally trained programmer, and I will bet you
that the people who created this software are. So much for professional
 training.

We have no idea who wrote the software, or even if the vendor knows.
Maybe it was outsourced to someplace really cheap, where the
programmers may or may not be professionally trained.

More importantly, even the best programmers (or people in any other
line of work) make errors, no matter how well-trained and/or
experienced they may be. We all hope that the bugs that make it past
testing are trivial, but we also all know that's not always the case.

Re: [NF] Fox on other OS, (was Fast scanner)

2013-02-01 Thread Jerry Wolper
Such a great achievement, and so ahead of its time. Did this trend
discontinue simply because M$ wanted to dominate the OS world and
hence not want their softwares to run on non-Windows machines?

More because M$ dominated the OS world, and cross-platform
development is difficult. If you want to go back to the early '80s,
Lotus supplanted VisiCorp in the spreadsheet market because VisiCalc
only ran on the Apple II, while 1-2-3 ran on DOS.

Of course, as Microsoft acquired various software companies (like our
friends at Fox Software), they had a vested interest in making sure
their products only ran on Microsoft OSs.
