Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS/R and ISO metadata ?

Hei Falk,

Good that you ask!
Actually, right now there is a great opportunity to contribute to implementing
comprehensive and efficient metadata management in QGIS.

A thorough discussion (https://gitter.im/qgis/metadata) , involving QGIS
developers, metadata experts and interested QGIS users, has led to a long term
plan in this regards:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1twE8J345Sz1rk1z34672eqlEiL2mJT4bZbuF5oRTCoM/edit#heading=h.j6lg9sa71mq6
 (which is not necessarily final)

See also: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Enhancement-Proposals/issues/91 and the
other QEPs mentioned in the document above.

We (NINA) work on quite similar things than you do (in an SDM context you might
probably also be interested in:
https://github.com/NaturalHistoryMuseum/ckanext-gbif).

NINA will contribute financially to the development of metadata management in
QGIS, as we see that as an important step for efficient work flows in our
institution (meaning good tools here will save us money in terms of work time
in the long run). Hope many other institutions will join this initiative!

Kind regards,
Stefan

Dear Colleagues,

Thanks for your QGIS work; we use it all the time, and in a university.

We need more...

I might have asked earlier, but would you know what to do re. ISO compliant

On and off, ARCGIS (sorry to mention that name here) had a pretty good

Do you mind to enlighten me for QGIS, R and similar when it comes to this

The scaling factor “+k=0.9996” does not seem to be present in your ArcInfo CRS…
Could be a reason...

Hi Mark,

The projection that I use in Qgis and ArcInfo is:
QGIS: +proj-sterea +lat_0=53.5 + lon_0=-76.0 +k=0.9996 +x_0=0.0 +y_0=0.0
+a=631816.16075 +b=631816.16075 +units=m +nodefs
ArcInfo: has different representation but the same thing:
Projection STEREOGRAPHIC
Datum NONE
Zunits NO
Units METERS
XShift0.000
YShift0.000
Parameters 631816.16075 0.000
  1 /* Projection type < 1 | 2 >
631816.16075 /*radius of sphere of reference

53 30 0.000 /* latitude of center of projection
0.0 /* false easting (meters)

One more thing ArcInfo uses directive COORDINATES in AML to extract the
coordinates.

How can I make the two coordinates to be the same?

What is the projection of the arc/info coverage?

Is QGIS set to the same projection?

Re: [Qgis-user] Print one map for every category in layer with fixed extent

2017-02-08 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi again,

And thanks Alexandre for the alternative solution. Your workflow is quite
flexible and powerful too, and seems to be a bit more simple.
Yet, I still assume (from the experience within my organization) that it is
still a bit too complex for people who use QGIS (or GIS in general) rather
seldom.

Thus I packed the Python script I compiled into a plugin (“SerialPrint”) for
simplistic serial map production.

If one has a composer with a map item (and optionally a legend), the plugin
will loop over a list of user defined layers and:

1 toogle the current layer visible,

2 insert an entry at the top of the legend,

3 export the composition to raster or PDF,

4 toogle the current layer invisible again, remove the respective
legend entry and go to next layer in the list…

The plugin needs some cosmetics and would benefit from some enhancements I
already have in mind, but it should be working OK.
It is available at: https://github.com/NINAnor/SerialPrint In addition, I also
just uploaded it to the plugin repository (flagged as experimental), so testing
becomes more easy.

I would be happy about tests and feedback!

Kind regards,
Stefan

So,

Imagining that you have layer as a regular grid. Each cell has, for different
species, the number of individuals found stored in columns. You want to keep
the map always with the same extent and iterate over the columns (species).
With atlas, all you need is a layer with a list of the names of all the columns
you want to iterate. It does not have to be spatial, you can just create it as
a simple CSV and import that in QGIS. You can also add it other columns with
information that you want to use in the maps. Here an example:
"column_name", "common_name", "scientific_name" <-- first row can be used for
column names
"specie_1", "specie 1 common name", "specie 1 scientific name"
"specie_2", "specie 2 common name", "specie 2 scientific name"
"specie_3", "specie 3 common name", "specie 3 scientific name"
After loading the layer and give it a name ("list_of_species" for this example)
Use that layer atlas layer.

Let's say we want to draw the cell with some color if there are more that 0
elements of a particular specie and white for the rest. In a rule-base
simbology, you would need something like:
"specie_1" > 0  --> color
ELSE  --> white

Since we what to iterate the column name, we can get it from the atlas feature,
and we can recreate a string that match the expression above. But we need to
pass it trough the eval() function to make it work

eval('"' + attribute( @atlas_feature, 'column_name') + '" > 0')
Something similar can also be used directly in a graduated style, without the
">0" part:

eval('"' + attribute( @atlas_feature, 'column_name') + '"')
I have planned to do a blog post about this, but it's in my long to do list.

Hope it helps.

Hi Stefan,

It is possible without the help of Python.

You would have to split up the species into layers.

Then create an atlas layer that is the geometry you want joined with every
possible layer. You can use QGIS virtual layers for that which you can define
in DB manager. Or use a Postgis view for it.

So for each geographic unit you want to print you need a combination with each
layer you want.

E.g.

Province 1 - Species 1

Province 1 - Species 2

Province 1 - Species 3

Province 2 - Species 1

Province 2 - Species 2

Province 2 - Species 3

In this layer, the geometry is redundant, but since you can use Postgis views
or virtual layers, it is only virtually redundant.

-

Finally, in print composer you would use data-defined layers or visibility
presets based on attributes in the atlas coverage layers.

I did exactly that - print an Atlas for several districts in my city and a loop
of historic maps. For each district I printed around 15 different historic time
snapshots (old maps).

Hope this helps to get started.

Hi,

There is http://gisgeography.com/mapping-out-gis-software-landscape/

Which hopelessly overrates ArcGIS, also because of a US centric perspective.
However, the Authors use Google trends and statistics on GIS.SE to rank
popularity of GIS. And if you do that QGIS is nr. 1 in Europe at least. Note
also the trend in the google trends curves, esp. If you take Italy as an
example.
People close to retirement can probably stick to Arc, but people who are
students now will have to learn open source in their career, no doubt...
Even in a rich country like norway a significat number of university courses on
GIS (esp. such related to ecology) switched to Open Source and mostly QGIS...

Dear List,

I was asked to give a 5 days international GIS training course at the
university and proposed to do it with QGIS. The program leader finally insisted
on doing it with ArcGIS arguing that the students had better chances to find a
job knowing ArcGIS rather than QGIS. This argumentation does not reflect my

But how can I proof that knowing QGIS is the better choice for young GIS
professionals than ArcGIS (or at least that both systems are equally suited)?
Does anybody know any official numbers of GIS users worldwide or on the
worldwide application of QGIS over ArcGIS?

I know the Master thesis from Boku Vienna
(https://geoobserver.wordpress.com/2016/02/09/arcgis-vs-qgis/) but it is
focused on a technical comparison of both systems only.
Also the link
https://www.g2crowd.com/grid_report/documents/gis-winter-2016-report is not
really helpful because it is based on some 40 reviews only and therefore not
representative.
I really need to know some proven facts on the number of global QGIS users and
renown companies using QGIS worldwide.

Thanks for your help in advance,
Markus

Hi Ricardo,

You could try GRASS module "v.distance" either from Processing or GRASS plugin.
There you can use the same layer as a and b input and specify a minimum
distance so you don’t calculate distances between the same geometries in both
layers. You can also ask for a vector map with the lines that connect the
points with the closest neighbour...

MMQGIS does not seem to accept the same layer as source and destination.
The NNJoin plugin will calculate the distance to the nearest neighbour and will
identify it through its attribute values, but will not help you with the
plotting.

Hei Grant,

I guess it depends very much on the policies that apply in your company and
what infrastructure you have: Deployment on workstation (what OS), vs. Server
deployment or even cloud deployment.
Also which customization you want to apply to your QGIS installation might have
some implications.

In addidtion to what Paolo was writing, I heard that Citrix has been mentioned
to be a bit slow. We have relatively good experience with QGIS on an Ubuntu
Server and x2go. But mostly we use local installations on Windows using a
custom installer which we create using Paolos recipe here:
https://github.com/faunalia/HealthQGIS/blob/master/packaging/howto.rst
Finally, our IT department add that installer to the Windows software center.
However, our Windows admins complained about the frequent release cycle and
required me to drop point releases. While it is an almost one-click action to
create the installer on Ubuntu it must be some job to put it into the software
center (but I don`t know that part of the deployment).

No special issue that I know of. Install on some environments (e.g. Citrix) has
proved a bit tricky, but worked well.
Some of them have developed a portable installer for users without admin
rights. AFAIK they are happy with that.
All the best.

Hi Nyall,

Splitting up ellipsoidal measurement from OTF reprojection would be nice.
I would love to be able to define the default measurement type (e.g. in general
settings).
Possible to get it in QGIS 3.0?

Cheers
Stefan

Under project properties, general tab - change "ellipsoid" to "None /
Planimetric".

I keep meaning to split up the concept of ellipsoidal measurement from OTF
reprojection. In my view these are two different concepts - one is just about
display of data, the other relates to measurement. Ie, you should be able to
perform ellipsoidal calculations even if OTF rendering is disabled.

I just keep forgetting to do it early in a release cycle for extensive
testing...

Hei,

Through a colleague I happened to learn that there is some activity towards
establishing a Norwegian QGIS user group. See:
http://ko0656.wixsite.com/qgis

Maybe

a) some interested member-candidates are around here or

b) even initiators of the activity who can tell a bit more about the

Hi,

As far as I know, Webmercator (EPSG:3857) is not suitable for area measurements
at all. So no surprise that you get “wrong” results with that CRS.
See for example:

Hei Martina,

When you compare area measurments in QGIS with area measurements in Mapinfo you
are probably comparing geodesic measurements (in QGIS) with cartesian
measurements (in Mapinfo).
Thus, you get a difference.
A bit confusing indeed, but a design choice...

Hi,
You may be calculating square degrees and not metres. It can depend on the crs
depending on the tools you are using.

well, I mainly use tab-files that I can open in both programmes, but
occasionally I save as shapefile since this used to be the default in QGIS.

When comparing files, I coincidently realized that there was a mismatch in
calculated area for the shapefile and the tab-file for exactly the same
polygons! I used the field calculator in the attribute table in both cases, but
for the shapefile the resulting areas were almost doubled in area compared to
the tab-file. Any idea why this is happening?

I also realized similar differences when calculating area in a file where
projection has been converted from SWEREF99TM (a Swedish national projection)
to WGS84. There differences occurred in both the tab and shapefile compared to
the area calculated for the same tab-file in MapInfo. Again I find this very
confusing!

I need to rely on the area-calculations thus I really hope someone here can
explain to me what is happening!

Thanks in advance,
Martina

Re: [Qgis-user] GRASS processing algorithms outputs different CRS

2016-09-29 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
My guess is that the issue is related to this one:
https://trac.osgeo.org/grass/ticket/3048
(GRASS does not write AUTHORITY parameter (the EPSG code) to GeoTIFFs, thus
QGIS makes a guess where it takes the first matching CRS (the ID number of the
assigned EPSG code is lower than the original), I presume...).

I will update https://hub.qgis.org/issues/11884 and
https://hub.qgis.org/issues/14499 accordingly...

this is a known and long standing issue. Please search the relative ticket and

Even if the users are aware of the fact that ubuntugis-unstable contains the

I was thinking about it last night (and I was up way to late) and it is a bit

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable/ubuntu xenial main

Why? That are the packages not based on ubuntugis with the dependencies from

Do I have this wrong? I thought I had the repositories for the install correct

Hi Simon,

Try gpsbabel if your gdb is a Garmin GPS file (I guess it is), to convert it to
GPX, which you can open in QGIS like any other vector data
(If your gdb is an ESRI File Geodatabase you can open it in QGIS directly if
you have the gdal-plugin installed).

After opening the file in QGIS go on “Save as” and choose kmz /kml as output
format.

Hope that helps!

At the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA, www.nina.no) there is a
vacant permanent position as a "Systems administrator Linux" at our IT
department in Trondheim. The position will have a special focus on our
Linux-based infrastructure for scientific computing, where FOSS GIS technology
plays a central role:

see:
http://www.nina.no/english/News/News-article/ArticleId/4098/Systems-administrator-Linux

Since this is the first Linux-systems administrator position in NINA, the
person to be employed will be a kind of pioneer in NINA and has to be
comfortable with taking responsibility. Nevertheless, "young and talented"
candidates are equally encouraged to apply as "experienced" ones!

NINA is planning to setup a HPC/Cloud-based solution for scientific computing,
which will become an important tasks in this position together with system
administration for databases, OGC web services, data management and storage as
well as possible involvement in research projects The work will be carried
out in close contact with our System administrators on Windows, our FOSS GIS
developers as well as users / researchers from the fields of FOSS GIS / remote
sensing, statistics or genetics.

About NINA:
NINA is a diverse research institute covering many different fields of nature
research (in addition to biologists and ecologists we have economists, social
scientists, veterinaries). NINA has a wide portfolio of projects, so our future
employee will definitely not suffer from monotony. Being a foreigner here in
Norway myself, I can warmly recommend NINA and Norway as a place to work. Of
course, nature here is fantastic and also climate and light conditions are more
pleasant than one might think from the outside...

For more detailed information check the web-site above or get in touch with the
contact persons listed there.

The application should be sent to:
E-mail: siri.svend...@nina.no or
Post: NINA, Personnel Office, PO Box 5685 Sluppen, 7485 Trondheim, Norway

Application deadline is 19 August 2016. Imminent accession is desirable.

Kind regards,
Stefan Blumentrath

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS Viewer

2016-07-01 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi,

If you start QGIS with the --configpath option, you avoid hacking the registry,
as all such settings are written into the folder the “--configpath” option
points to (more precisely, into the QGIS.ini file)
That folder can be in the users Home directory and e.g. copied from a network
drive...

See:

Well there seems to be plenty of options; I like the idea of disabling some of
the interface options. I highly doubt too many of my coworkers know how to
access the registry and those that do I am not worried about making edits.
Thanks all.

If you're using the OSGeo4W installer, you could uninstall the filegdb
api so that QGIS has to use the OpenFileGDB driver (which is read
only) to view file geodatabases. The QGIS stand-alone installer just
has the OpenFileGDB driver, so nothing extra is required there.

Re: [Qgis-user] best data storage fo time series visualisation in QGIS

2016-06-17 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi,

What about using Grass Data Explorer
(https://bitbucket.org/huhabla/grass-data-explorer)?
Please find a demo here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxHt3jJbnYw

Lots of visualization, animation and analysis possibilities thanks to the
temporal framework in GRASS (TGIS)...
However, for vector data TGIS might need some love...

If you go for PostGIS, use table partitioning for efficiency!

Subject: [Qgis-user] best data storage fo time series visualisation in QGIS

Hi,
I need the communities lights!

I'm starting to work with huge meteo datasets composed of a grid of point
layers, and hundred of millions of rainfall / temperature data.

Datasets are delivered in a custom text format, so I'm digging around on what
are the best formats for storage, use in postgis and QGIS.
I would like to be able to :
 - run timeManager to generate videos
 - display data averaged on day / month / year (or any other) timeframe
 - feed R analyses.

Up to now, I tried the following paths:
  - netcdf / grib: ideal for data storage:
Pros : GDAL and QGIS can view it. R And python scipy have providers
for that
Cons : not easy to generate from exotic datasources, Current QGIS
Netcdf explorer or core date visualisation (time frame = raster bands) are not
handy for daily data over decades (about 10 000 days available in my dataset).
I didn't manage to build netcdf yet, FME or GDAL are a bit dry..

 - load all in postgres / postgis relationnal model:
Pros: available for all clients and fast, if data is correctly
indexed and designed/
Cons: performance requires a table (not a view because of lack of
estimated metadata for extent computing) with redondancy over point location. I
tried a first approach with a small geographical table for my point grid and a
value table. With correct indexing and clustering, I get good performance in
psql but very poor in QGIS. First load is slooow because of the st_extent
query, but also every fetch afterwards, even if I filter on a date frame (with
good index). I didn't expect it to be slow on fetch..

Another point with postgis storage, TimeManager plugin does not like true date
datatype, date cast to char truncate date to first character, so I have to
expose my datasets with a text format in my view, which is not quite efficient.
(I will create a ticket upstream)

Does anyone has any experience and advices on that field ?

I saw that postgis has a datacube type, could that be a way to store data more
efficiently? Could QGIS read it? Should I stick with netcdf ?

Thanks a lot

Re: [Qgis-user] Trouble with creatensis.pl on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

2016-02-24 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hei again,

I worked around the permission problem by running perl creatensis.pl as sudo.
That worked the first time. Abut after that I get a "bus error" when nsis is
run, every time I try, even with a completely fresh checkout from git. I get
that error both on my UBUNTU 14.04 server and on my Desktop. Some stale file in
/tmp or something?

Any ideas on how to solve that? Someone with similar experiences...
creatensis.pl worked nicely earlier (2.10)!

Hi,

I am trying to build a custom QGIS installer using creatensis.pl on Ubuntu
14.04 LTS.

Unfortunately I am getting errors during unpacking:

"tar: A lone zero block at 380
tar: apps/Qt4: Cannot mkdir: Permission denied"

And apps/Qt4 indeed has unknown permissions: "d? ? ? ? ?"

After that I need sudo to remove unpacked-x86...

It happens rather randomly. Even packages which worked fine the first run throw
errors on the next. However, it happens on every try both with master and
release branch, and on both Ubuntu 14.04 LTS boxes I tried...

Any help would be very much appreciated...

Re: [Qgis-user] Please test length/area measurement in master

2016-02-15 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi Nyall,

Thanks for your work on this issue(s) and esp. the unit tests.

I did a swift test with a 100km vector grid using master version 5d989ab (which
probably does not contain all your changes?).

Area measurements are consistent across field calculator and identify tool.
However, the field calculator (using an 8 digits numeric field) shows some
minor and probably neglectable imprecisions (e.g. compared to GRASS). GRASS
reports exacly 100. m2, while the field calculator gives
something like 100 +/- 0.0005 (OTF off).

With OTF on measurements differ significantly compared to GRASS and OTF off,
due to ellipsoidal metric used with OTF on I guess. Personally, I find this
difference confusing, but I trust the difference in behavior btw. OTF on and
off is a deliberate choice of the more accurate area measure?!

Choosing no measurement ellipsoid in the project settings gives the same
behavior as OTF off.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Subject: [Qgis-user] Please test length/area measurement in master

Hi all,

Just putting out a call for extensive testing of length and area measurements
in the current master version. Over the past week I've done a bunch of work
trying to simplify the situation regarding length/area calculation and unit
handling, with the intention of closing http://hub.qgis.org/issues/13209 and
the other outstanding area calculation issues (plus locking all this down with
unit tests!).

I'd really appreciate thorough testing being done by users to ensure that this
bug is now indeed fixed prior to the 2.14 release.

Things to check:

- measured length/area is consistent across the identify tool results, field
calculator, and measure tool. (note that there's still an open bug regarding
virtual fields - there's a PR open to fix this but it's not merged yet).
Testing with different combinations of geographic/non geographic CRS, OTF
projection on/off and various ellipsoid/planimetric calculations would be
perfect.
- test the new project properties settings for project distance/area units and
coordinate formats
- test the reworked options for QGIS angle units and measurement of angles
using the measure tool

Thanks in advance!

Moin Jürgen,

If you don`t mind, yet another question:

Latest qgis-dev package on
http://download.osgeo.org/osgeo4w/x86/release/qgis/qgis-dev/ is:
qgis-dev-2.13.0-93.tar.bz2

But through OSGeo4W I can only install the two days old version 2.13.0-91. I
downloaded the osgeo4w-setup-x86.exe again but that did not change anything.
The setup.ini is still from 06.02.2016... Is there a way to install 2.13.0-93
already now, or do I have to wait just a little more?

Cheers
Stefan

P.S.: I hope you bear with my impatience, I am just eager to see the temporal
GRASS modules work properly on Windows too.

That's also wrong ;) -84 was a week old and hence was truncated. -92 is the

Hi,

Is there a setting where I can specify that an attribute table should be opened

I tried searched both Layer properties and Setting options but did not find

Sure it would. But that will happen with the next point release anyway (every

That's wrong. qgis-rel-dev contains the plugins. No need to install the

Correct. There should be a stable version that will be around for a while.

Another option is to switch to the standalone. There you get a snapshot of a
working setup (unless grass gets updated in osgeo4w after the qgis packages are
uploaded, but before the standalone installer could be made).

Hi Andreas,

Thanks for your answer!

My use case is using QGIS as DB frontend where also non-spatial layers have to
be edited and editing does not necessarily start with a geometry...
Would you consider having such a setting a relevant enhancement? If so, should
I open an enhancement ticket or add a comment to Matthias`s “Fields and Forms

Hi Stefan,

I don't know such a setting. And no - you did not overlook it.

The only tool that opens the form view by default is the identify tool - if the
checkbox is enabled that opens the form if there only one target. But then you
can't easily switch to the table view.$

Hi Nyall, Richard, and Andreas,

For me it is all fine if you give the hint on funding, just like Andreas did,
knowing whom he is talking to. And I think he has a lot of valid points in his
answer.

Unfortunately, it is not always that simple, even for people using QGIS in
bigger organizations, to mobilize money for things they like to see implemented
(believe me, I wish it was)...

On your list, Nyall, I would add Crowd funding as a fifth (and quite popular)
way of getting things into QGIS. And of course all fife can be mixed to some
extent...

Anyway, keep up with your good work regardless if paid or voluntary. As I see
it, the mix is what makes the project successful...

Cheers
Stefan

Well, the reality is that there's a very limited number of ways in which new
features get implemented in QGIS:

1. Write it yourself. (Requires knowledge of QGIS source and c++)

2. Pay someone else to write it for you (requires money)

3. Wait for someone else to write/pay for it (requires patience and hope that
your request is something someone else really needs)

4. Try to convince someone to donate their work/free time to do it for you
(requires super levels of negotiating and finding the magic words to say to
developers on irc/email/etc, or a project which is sufficiently interesting to
attract a developer's attention regardless.)

I don't think there's any other ways code gets added to QGIS.

(Note that I'm *not* discounting all the non development volunteer/paid QGIS
work, I'm just referring to how features can get added.)

Given this, I think it's fine to direct people who request stuff to the most
direct and reliable way to make changes happen - option 2 above. Just saying
"file a feature request" alone isn't all that helpful (it's effectively options
3 or 4 above). It's also very helpful to also let them know how they can make
these changes happen quickly.

Hi again,

Indeed, for us enterprise users a nice collection/overview of reasons for
working with and paying for FOSS (including a howto) could be really helpful
when discussing with decision makers.

I remember Paolo had a post in that direction:
https://faunaliagis.wordpress.com/2013/09/15/6-reasons-to-pay-for-open-source-software/

A critical point might also be that it can be simply more easy, to use money on
proprietary software. You have probably only one local dealer, you get a price
and you know more or less what you get for your money. Once you made your
decision on a software, sat aside your annual license fees and accepted that
this has to be payed, things go more or less automatically... With the legal
entity, QGIS is maybe on a good way there. I could also imagine, that the
grouping the many feature requests into (crowd) fundable packages might be
helpful. In some cases the gentle push from a starting crowd funding activity
(or when it is about to end) can be enough to make people to use some money...

Cheers

Hi Bernd,

Depends how you define "stable".
The nightlies for 2.12 are only receiving bugfixes, so they can be even more
"stable" than the current point release. However, also fixes can in principle
introduce new bugs...
That the GRASS plugin does not install in 2.8 is simply due to the fact that it
first got introduced in 2.12 (see:
http://qgis.org/en/site/forusers/visualchangelog212/#plugins)...

Anyway,I would very much like to see the GRASS integration in QGIS becoming a
bit more smooth. There have been several post regarding problems with the
installation of the plugin lately.

Since the GRASS GIS 7.0.3 just was released: would it be possible to build new
packages for the different platforms? Currently it is quite cumbersome, esp. on
windows where I have to install two QGIS versions (qgis and qgis-rel-dev, since
"qgis" is the dependency of the plugin and I cannot install only "qgis-rel-dev"
alone).

In future, avoiding to build the plugin against GRASS release candidates (like
Martin Landa suggested for Windows) could be a solution. However, the drawback
might be that, people might have to decide whether they want to test the GRASS
RC or keep the QGIS plugin dependencies. Would it be an option to have parallel
builds / packages for the stable GRASS 7 and the RC (like qgis, qgis-rel-dev
and qgis-dev)?

Cheers
Stefan

Are the nightlies for 2.12 as stable as the "normal" ubuntugis stuff? If so,

What is the level of interest in other geological tools? I would very much
like to see the momentum in QGIS carry on into building tools in QGIS and/or
PostGIS to support drilling, geochemistry and geophysics field surveys.

For example, I have run simple drill sections as “projections” with the data
calculated in a spreadsheet. Recently I have been (enjoying!) processing
magnetic surveys in R and building profiles for plotting in plan view along the
survey lines. The tools are there to build a good exploration suite like those
provided commercially for MapInfo and ESRI.

Any other interest in this? Should we be more formalizing a project?

Coming from the field of archaeology, those sound like tools we'd find useful
too. My current client is paying me to work on QGIS tools for site survey and
recording, and having ways to integrate the geophysics, geoarchaeology,
borehole data, etc without writing it all myself would be useful.
Possibly related are Midvatten [1] and other hydrological plugins [2] which
I've just started looking at for a borehole survey project we may be working on
soon.
Of course, having full 3D support within QGIS would make this sort of thing a
lot easier rather than re-projecting everything in 2D plan view or exporting
it, but we're getting there :-)

If you have a Windows tablet you can use QGIS as is. The user interface of
IntraMaps Roam (http://roam-docs.readthedocs.org/en/latest/), which is based on

Two issues.

Apparently GRASS meanwhile moved on to GRASS 7.0.3RC2 while 2.12.3 was built
against 7.0.3RC1. Not sure why the stable grass package is replaces with RCs
and whether it's necessary to embed the exact version number in the file names,
but that way it's easy to break GRASS support in QGIS.

The second issue is that GRASS bin directory also needs to be added to the PATH
(not sure since when). That's fixed in 244f83e and 23cdda2. Please verify
with one of the next nightlies (qgis-dev or qgis-rel-dev).

Re: [Qgis-user] OSGeo4W-packages for GRASS 7 only in QGIS

2016-01-21 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi again,

I just tried the 2.12.3 version with the GRASS7-plugin and GRASS 7.0.3RC1
(since the batch-file in the plugin is pointing to that version) in OSGeo4W
32bit.
Unfortunately, GRASS 7 does not seem to be recognized in QGIS: mapsets only
show up as folders and the plugin is not available...

Any idea what might be the issue here?

Cheers
Stefan

The grass 7 plugin is only built in 32bit OSGeo4W - the 64bit version doesn't
have a stable 64bit GRASS 7 package yet - only a daily build. That's going to
change with 7.0.3 (according to Martin Landa).

Yes. I didn't want to have GRASS6 and 7 in the standalone installer and as
said GRASS7 is not available in 64bit yet.

Hi again,

I tried to update my installation, but it seems that the qgis-grass-plugin7
still is the old (incomplete) one (version 2.12.2-1).
Are there any plans to update the 32bit package soon, or will you update when
the 64bit version of GRASS 7 becomes available?

Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: [Qgis-user] OSGeo4W-packages for GRASS 7 only in QGIS

2015-12-21 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi Jürgen,

Thanks for your reply.

I am aware that the GRASS plugin is not available in 64bit (I am following
yours and Martin Landa`s activity in this regards and looking forward to the
7.0.3 release, hopefully in Januar).

I was referring to OSGeo4W 32bit (sorry for not being specific right away). In
32bit the GRASS 6 plugin works fine, the GRASS 7 plugin hower, is unfortunately
not available. As mentioned the package(s) seem incomplete (plugin .dlls seem
to be missing).

Based on a comparison of the grass6 and grass7 plugin packages, I assume that
in the 32bit-package "qgis-grass-plugin7-2.12.2-1.tar.bz2" (but also in the
earlier versions of the plugin (e.g. 2.12.1-1 or 2.10.1-2) the following files
are missing:
apps/qgis/plugins/grassplugin7.dll
apps/qgis/grass/bin/qgis.g.browser7.exe

Anyway, many, many thanks for your packaging work, which makes the excellent
OSGeo tools easily available!

Kind regards,
Stefan

[Qgis-user] OSGeo4W-packages for GRASS 7 only in QGIS

2015-12-21 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi,

I was wondering what packages I have to select in order to install the current
release of QGIS only with GRASS 7 support (meaning esp. the GRASS 7 plugin),
cause I want to avoid confusion of users and mixed up GRASS mapsets (GRASS 6
/GRASS 7)...

I tried to only select qgis, grass, qgis-grass-plugin7 and let the installer
add the dependencies. But using this approach, I cannot see the GRASS 7 plugin
in QGIS on windows (the data provider works though...)...

Looking into the qgis-grass-plugin7 package, it seems that equivalents for
apps/qgis/plugins/grassplugin6.dll
apps/qgis/grass/bin/qgis.g.browser6.exe
are missing in the package?

Any Idea? Should I open a ticket in OSGeo4W?

Kind regards
Stefan

P.S.: The current QGIS standalone installer ships only GRASS 6, so it is no
alternative...

Hi,

I am facing a similar issue with the other QGIS Versions on the same OS.

I suspect it is a kernel issue. Did you install latest Ubuntu kernel? That
hopefully fixes the issue (I am testing at the moment...).

Hi,

I need to fill a filed with a code block like this:

"0001"
"0002"
"0003"
...
"0010"
"0011"

I see the caluclator has the "$rownum" variable, but the result will be this:

"1"
"2"
"3"
...
"9"
"10"

And this is not affordable because the lenght is not costant for us need.

I dont know if there is a solution to allow a fixed-length code-block value in
the qgis calculator.

Thx

A.

Is /var/www/html/tmp/pokus/vrstva.shp readable for user “www-data” (which is

Hi,

several days, I'm fighting QGIS server - on lightttpd now on Apache server with
*same* result: WFS GetFeatureType request does not return any data.

I created project, set all necessary metadat, coordinate systems, made sure
data are in readable path etc...

I've published the service using qgis_mapserver.fcgi - WMS works
(GetCapabilitiers, GetMap, GetFeatureInfo), but WFS works just for
GetCapabilitiers, GetFeatureType request returns just the first response element

http://www.opengis.net/wfs; xmlns:ogc="h
.>

and that's all - not even the closing tag. It seems, the server refuses to work
in the middle of construction of the response :-(

I have

FcgidInitialEnv QGIS_AUTH_DB_DIR_PATH /var/www/qgis
FcgidInitialEnv QGIS_DEBUG 1
FcgidInitialEnv QGIS_SERVER_LOG_FILE /tmp/qgis-server.log
FcgidInitialEnv QGIS_SERVER_LOG_LEVEL 1

but /tmp/qgis-server.log is empty (even created)

In the apache error log, only following lines can be found:
Warning 1: Unable to find driver ECW to unload from GDAL_SKIP environment
variable.
Warning 1: Unable to find driver ECW to unload from GDAL_SKIP environment
variable.
Warning 1: Unable to find driver JP2ECW to unload from GDAL_SKIP environment
variable.
Warning 1: Unable to find driver ECW to unload from GDAL_SKIP environment

variable.
ERROR 4: Unable to open /var/www/html/tmp/pokus/vrstva.shp or
/var/www/html/tmp/pokus/vrstva.SHP.

BUT, accessing the file vrstva.shp from http://localhost/tmp/pokus/vrstva.shp
works, apache user can read it and, as I already said: WMS GetMap and
GetFeatureInfo works

I've tested QGIS mapserver 2.12 and 2.8 on lightttpd as well as apache, with
old projects as well as completely new with just one line in shapefile - same
result all the time. Ubuntu 15.10 btw.

Any hint?

Thanks

Hi again,

I actually deleted the build directory before I built again with Debug.

Now I freshly cloned the code, created build directory

git clone -b release-2_12 --single-branch https://github.com/qgis/QGIS.git
QGIS_2_12
cd QGIS_2_12
mkdir qgis-2.12
cd qgis-2.12/
ccmake .. #There in the CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE line I entered "Debug"
make
gdb ./output/bin/qgis

Result is the same as before: "No stack"
Any ideas?

In cmake gui is the right choice, the env variable is ignored.
Maybe you have to "make clean" before running "make" again? It seems that there
are no debug symbols available yet.
And once they are available, it seems that there's still an issue with X of
which I am not sure if it brings the application to its knees even before it
arrives at the point where the crash we are interested in is.

Hi all,

At the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA,

database-IT department in Trondheim with a special focus on FOSS GIS
technology, because NINA is planning to take another step into that direction:

see:

That means, the person to be employed would become a key person in building up

applications expired even before it was properly announced. Therefore we would
be still happy to receive further applications, though they will have to be
send swiftly, I am afraid. A good CV and a short letter of application will be
sufficient... A swift reply is more important than fancy layout or wording of
your application...

About NINA:
NINA is a diverse research institute covering many different fields of nature
research (in addition to biologists and ecologists we have economists, social

Re: [Qgis-user] [GRASS-user] GRASS toolbar in QGIS

2015-10-07 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi Radim,

Personally, I do not rely on the buttons in the toolbar, so I have no
objections to remove them from the toolbar.
Consistent UI (comparable to Processing) seems an appropriate priority...

Just some ideas for possible solutions:
"Show Region button" might go into the "Region tab" in the grass tools widget
(instead of near close mapset)?
Close to the "Close mapset"-button in the tools widget, you might place the
"Open mapset"-button from the toolbar?
In a GRASS entry in an "Analysis" Menu, you might place content from the
context menu in the browser (GRASS tools settings and so on)?

Cheers
Stefan

P.S.: I shall add that to the ticket...

We are discussing possible UI cleanup related also to GRASS:
https://hub.qgis.org/issues/13537

Questions for plugin users:

- Can be open/new/close items removed from the toolbar? There is a possibility
to open mapset from browser and close it from tools dock widget and there are
menu items for all three actions.

- Should we keep Region action (region display on/off) in the toolbar, it could
be moved to the top of tools widget, beside Close mapset button

- Is it "Open Tools" action in the toolbar useful? It is also in the menu and
tools may be opened like any other docked widget from Settings > Panels

Hi Luca

Would this core functionality of QGIS be an option for you?

https://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/visualchangelog210/index.html#feature-filter-chaining-for-relation-reference-widget

If you are still required to use python in your forms: are you using global
variables? They can be an issue for embedded forms.

Cheers,
Matthias

I need that the second combo shows only the municipalities of the choosed

I tried to use use the widget "relationship value" with the a filter like
classe_munic = attribute($currentfeature, 'classe_munic') without any success.

Has anyone ever done something similar?

Re: [Qgis-user] Modeler-only tools: Calculator

2015-08-09 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi Bernd,

From your explanation it did not become quite clear to me what you actually
want to achieve.

My guess is that you are struggling with a similar issue which a colleague of
mine had with the raster map calculator.
He was wondering how to use numerical variables in the raster map calculator,
which takes the formula only as a string argument (probably it is the same with
the Field calculator (I am not so familiar with this part of QGIS)?).

The, probably not very elegant, but still simple solution is to generate the
formula in a python script in Processing, which injects your numerical values
into the formula. E.g. like this (where F is the formula and C e.g. a
(string) map variable you are going to use in the formula):

##A=number 1
##B=number 5
##F=output string
F=str(A) + / + str(B) + * C

You can then uses this Python script in your model...

Hope that helps. It works at least well for the raster map calculator...

Cheers,
Stefan

Hi,

In my search for a solution for the problem, that number input variables in a
model can't be referred to in the field calculator (while string inputs, though
it doesn't make any sense, can):
2 years old http://hub.qgis.org/issues/8743
http://gis.stackexchange.com/q/72569

I found the modeler-only tools Calculator, which indeed lists all numerical
inputs.

This tool doesn't come with any explanation besides: You can refer to model
values in your formula, using single-letter variables, as follows:

a-Gridsize

and

[Enter your formula here]

Ok, so when I enter a formula there, what next

When I put - a - there, cause I just want this value, and try to use - a
- in the field calculator, it does not work.

Furthermore: The formula has disappeared after reopening the function:
http://hub.qgis.org/issues/11434#note-9

It does not seem to be usable at all.

And it destroyed my three-days work on a model, cause by mistake I entered
nothing and hit ok and saved the thing, which caused a python error and the
model can't be opend again.

Only the fact that I work on a cloud where I can restore my last version
from yesterday has saved my ass. (Working locally, the hole work would have
been gone forever!).

There seems to be no way to get rid of that function from the model manually in
a text editor, identifying the section and removing it still leaves a crippled
model which refuses to load.

Questions:
Is there anyone around who is able to explain me the structure of a model file
or point to least some minimal documentation?. Why do nearly every manual
operations on a model in an editor destroy them, and how can I avoid this?

Does anyone know how to use this Calculator without destroying the model?

Is there any workaround for referencing numerical input in the field calculator.

Cheers
Bernd

Re: [Qgis-user] [Off-Topic] Field Data Collection with QGIS

2015-07-30 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Forgot to mention:

If you want to use an internal GPS make sure that your device has a proper GPS
and not only AGPS which is not only poor in precision but also only works with
internet connection…

Furthermore, Tablet-Accessories that were useful for us were:

-A digitizing pen (if you go for e.g. a tablet like the Samsung Galaxy
Note 8 that is included). Esp. for me a digitizing pen was essential in order
to use the device at all.

-A micro USB to USB converter (and if you go for a Windows tablet a
portable docking station, so you can use your tablet like a normal comuter,
with external Monitor and so on, see e.g.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPPY4m8iY0k)

-A hand strap, so you do not have to hold the tablet all the time,

-A rugged case in case you do not walk in easy terrain…

BTW, on our Windows tablets we deactivated the “Lock screen” and the
requirement to enter username and password after wake-up, which would have been
quite time consuming.

Good luck with your study.

Cheers
Stefan

Re: [Qgis-user] [Off-Topic] Field Data Collection with QGIS

2015-07-29 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi Marco,

Some of my colleagues made quite good experience with “full” QGIS on a Win8
Tablet (8’’) for a tree database. Since we needed a Desktop solution for the
database anyway, we just copied the QGIS project (where we defined forms and so
on) to the tablet (as you intended). Done.

The Intramaps Interface is of course much more adjusted to Tablets and offers
some nice features QGIS does not offer (e.g. the “Option row” input widget).
Yet, one has to rebuild the forms which requires some extra work. It can be
worth the effort as it may speed-up data capturing in the field. Intramaps
should support «offline maps» too so it is not necessary to choose Android for
that reason.

However, a real drawback of Windows 8 is the Windows Location-API which means
that internal GPS is not supported out of the box by QGIS and Intramaps there.
Here you either have to use an external GPS or a workaround:
http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/78857/how-to-make-work-tablet-integrated-gnss-gps-on-windows-8-with-qgis

QField looks very promising to me and I am planning to try it in more detail
soon.

Interesting plugins I would recommend to look at are the “Offline Editing
Plugin”
https://docs.qgis.org/2.6/en/docs/user_manual/plugins/plugins_offline_editing.html
 and QGIS-Versioning from Oslandia
(https://github.com/Oslandia/qgis-versioning) If you plan to work with a
PostGIS database…

Cheers

I had a similar issue with unixODBC and MS SQL.
If I am not mistaken, the «host parameter overrides the «Provider/DSN»
parameter. It does so for MS SQL, at least.
For MS SQL it helped to leave the host parameter empty and only use
Provider/DSN.

However, there does not seem to be a Provider/DSN parameter for neither Add

A Bug?

Add vector Layer
Choose Database
Type ODBC
Click New
I filled the form as:
Type ODBC
Name: myODBCConnection
Host: ssfdata
Database: CAAR
Port: 1521
Username: USER
Password: PASS

When I clicked Test Connection I got:
Connection failed - Check settings and try again

Extended error information:
Unable to initialize ODBC connection to DSN for USER/PASS@CAAR,
[unixODBC][Driver Manager] Datasource name not found, and no default driver

I opened a terminal window and I typed:
Isql -v caarODBC
I was able to connect to my database
++

So the unixODBC driver works for the database but QGIS is not able to access
via ODBC.

Is any special settings related qgis to make ODBC working?

Thanks,

Re: [Qgis-user] Default values in form

Hi,

I am about to file a ticket for this. Another thought in this context:
When defining default values it would be splendid if one could use variables
(e.g. %USER% or expressions like in the field calculator or Relation Reference
widget). What do you think?
The latter could probably go into a new widget type Calculated?

Another thing in this context could be adding the possibility do define
Mouse-over effects in order to help understanding attribute content better
(e.g. Units, backgrounds, how to measure in the field...)?! Lables are not
allways sufficient, but maybe the GUI gets too fidgety?

Should a request for this go into separate tickets?

Cheers

[Qgis-user] QGIS crashes when zooming out from MS SQL layer

2015-06-22 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi,

I have a View in MS SQL containing some point data (263 points) and a int64
primary key (qlonglong data type in QGIS), which I have loaded to QGIS (CRS:
4326, no OTF-projection).
When I zoom out, QGIS crashes at a certain zoom level. Zoom to layer crashes
every time I try. This happens both in master and 2.8.2.

When I export the layer to shape, the resulting file alone works just fine
(some data types in the attribute table were converted)...
Both layers (shape and MS SQL) have exactly the same spatial extent.
I tried to compare the number of features in the MS SQL layer and the shape
layer. Count features did not work for the MS SQL layer, but number of
entries in the attribute table are the same...

Any ideas? Should I file a ticket?

Thanks for helping.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 2.8.2 dont work grass from processing

2015-06-03 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
In order to define the path to R in Processing we had to use the browse-buttons
(the one with the three dots which appears when you double click the
path-field). Otherwise entered values / changes were not written to
registry/QGIS.ini (using OSGeo4W).

Maybe it is the same for GRASS provider...

Hi all,
I tested the area calculating functions in QGIS 2.8.2 and figured out, that
I just get zero values when using the function Vector Geometry Tools
Export/Add Geometry Columns calculating on Ellipsoid.
I tested it with shape-files and PostGIS-Layers with the QGIS Windows
Installer Version 64bit.
I suppose this is a bug in version 2.8.2 because it works in 2.6
In 2.8.2 it also works when calculating on Layer CRS or Project CRS, but not
on Ellipsoid.
Can someone reproduce this error?

Another strange thing when using the Export/Add Geometry Columns - function
ist the message (see screenshot) I always get when click OK to execute the
function.
http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/file/n5208252/screen_warning.jpg

Is this warning normal? I don't have the layers attribute table open.

Best greetings from Berlin
Ralf

Hello,
I had a look at my *.qgs-files and so far I understand that there is
information stored about
* Layers added
* Layer properties, icluding symbolisation and styles
* Projection for the map view
* Last viewed extend
* Print Composers
* Print Composer elements with settings
* Print Composer atlas settings
* Digitizing settings

Did I miss something essential? I want to insert the descriptions into the QGIS

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Qgis-user] QCompleter in QGIS form

2015-03-29 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi again,

Now I spend some more thoughts on 2) and consider to write a Python macro for
project start, which runs the query and writes results (completer items) kind
of hard-coded into the form init function (meaning I will have to have a
template for the form init function, which then is saved with the final name
(overwriting earlier versions), while completer items are being injected).

Do you think such a solution will cause the form to open faster (depending on
the connection speed to the data base probably)? Or is it almost equally costly
to load a rather long init-function (python script text fie)?

Cheers,
Stefan

P.S.: Esp. help on 1) is still most welcome...

P.P.S.: If it is of interest for others I could publish / document my
QCompleter solution on github...

Yet there are two things I am struggling with:
1) Would it be possible to use this QCompleter solution to an autogenerated
form? The auto generated forms are more than good enough for most of my
use-cases. When I tried the Init function on an autogenerated form I got
NameError: global name 'TextEdit' is not defined... Any ideas how to fix
that?

2) It seems to me that the query - which is used to fill the QCompleter - is
executed each time the form is opened. Would it be possible to avoid this, I
mean that the query is only run once (e.g. when I open the project)? I hoped
this could speed up the start of the form (even if the query gets cached in
PostgreSQL)...

[Qgis-user] QCompleter in QGIS form

2015-03-28 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Dear all,

Thanks to Nathan`s excellent example here:
http://nathanw.net/2011/09/05/qgis-tips-custom-feature-forms-with-python-logic/
I managed to implement a simple QCompleter for a LineEdit in my form where the
completer items are being fetched from DB (see init function code at the end of
my mail).

This is very, very promising stuff which comes in quite handy for entering
species names (from an official list of (thousands of) species names in my
case)!

Any ideas how to fix that?

2) It seems to me that the query - which is used to fill the QCompleter - is
executed each time the form is opened. Would it be possible to avoid this, I
mean that the query is only run once (e.g. when I open the project)? I hoped
this could speed up the start of the form (even if the query gets cached in
PostgreSQL)...
Many thanks in advance for helping.

Kind regards,
Stefan

P.S.: Next thing I will have to do is understand SIGNALS and SLOTS so I can
adjust the completer content depending on other data entered in the form (e.g.
filter species by kingdom or known occurrence in a country (here Norway)) ...

P.P.S.: My form_init.py looks like this:

from PyQt4.QtCore import *
from PyQt4.QtGui import *
from PyQt4.QtSql import *
import psycopg2
nameField = None
myDialog = None

def formOpen(dialog,layerid,featureid):
global myDialog
myDialog = dialog
global nameField
nameField = dialog.findChild(QLineEdit,latinsk_navn)

#Initiate completer
completer = QCompleter()
nameField.setCompleter(completer)

#Fetch data from DB to fill completer
conn = psycopg2.connect(dbname='MYDB' user='MYUSERNAME' host='MYHOST'
password='MYPASSWD')
cur = conn.cursor()
cur.execute(SELECT scientificname FROM kls.l_artsliste WHERE
finnesinorge = 'Ja')
completition_items = []
for row in cur.fetchall():
completition_items.append(row[0])

#Add data to Qt Model / QCompleter
   model = QStringListModel()
model.setStringList(completition_items)
completer.setModel(model)

Hi QGIS Users,

I would like to ask if anybody have experienced getting different results using
A) Zonal Statistics Plugin and B) Zonal Statistics in Graphical Modeler?

Here is the description of our Dataset:

Vector
5 features (2 features have area of 1.74 and 1.89 ha; 3 features have less than
1 ha. area). These are farmer plots.

Raster
pixel size is 180m X 180m = 3.24ha.

Processing

Running Zonal Statistics in Graphical Modeler:
Only computes realistic statistics for 2 features (area having 1.74 and 1.89
ha) but gives weird computation for features having less than 1 ha. For
features less than 1 ha, it gives values 0. and 1.

Running Zonal Statistics in Raster Zonal Statistics Zonal Statistics:
It gives realistic values for all features.

This happens in QGIS Brighton and Wien.

Thanks,

Or you could use v.distance from GRASS (either through Processing or the

With the “output”-option it produces lines.

If your data is in a Spatialite or a Postgis database, it's quite easy to
achieve what you seek.

All you need to do is create a SQL query similar to this one in DB Manager:

SELECT
a.gid as dep_id,
b.gid as dest_id,
ST_Distance(a.geom, b.geom) as distance,
ST_MakeLine(a.geom, b.geom) as geom
FROM
my_table as a, my_table as b
WHERE
a.gid b.gid

Note: This is the postgis version, not sure if the same function applies to
spatialite

Add it to the map canvas by using dep_id as unique value column and geom as
geometry column.

Hope it helps.

Hi Joris,

Not sure if I understand your question, but if you want to do a distance
calculation for all points in a point layer to a certain location you can use
the field calculator in the attribute table window.

The expression should be:

distance($geometry ,geomFromWKT( 'POINT(0 0)' ))

to calculate all distances to coordinate 0,0.

Hope this helps you.

Re: [Qgis-user] Deploying Qgis in an organisation.

2015-02-16 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi,

Very interesting thread!

Would it work to install QGIS/OSGeo4W to a network drive and just copy it from
there to the different Workstations (e.g. to C:\OSGEO4W64 for Windows
workstations)? Will not registry / path settings be scrued?

In our institution we distribute QGIS settings using a batch script on Windows
(attached, renamed it from bat to .txt, so the mail does not end on a
blacklist) for setting registry keys for OWS / database connections, GUI or
digitizing related settings or copying project templates or default plugins.

But institution-wide installation of OSGeo4W remained as a challenge (including
keeping QGIS-plugins up to date). I tried to download packages to a network
drive (so not everybody had to download from the internet). But users had
trouble with installing from there through osgeo4w installer... So I would be
very interested in learning more cost-efficient means of deployment of the
software (OSGeo4W / QGIS)...

Cheers
Stefan

e.g. first layer in the Fiskeriaktivitet-tab) for the WMS I use displays a
much wider data extent than the WMS in QGIS
(http://kart.fiskeridir.no/wms.aspx? , here one may have to set tile size
(something like 1000x1000) and choose png format in order to make it visible).
In QGIS the WMS seems to be clipped in N,S,E, and W, while another proprietary
GIS displays the WMS correctly (like the web-client)...

Any idea what could be the problem here?

I am usin QGIS 2.5 master (d833c22) through OSGeo4W.

Thanks in advance for helping.

Hello,
I found a workaround to my problem : the computation I am performing is
done on a layer open from a network file.
So I copied the files on my local computer disk and the computation time
became normal, with a normal CPU usage.

In order to understand the problem, I had a look to questions on slow
network access trouble with QGIS. I think my problem is related to that
one : http://hub.qgis.org/issues/6448

In fact if I try to perform a simple spatial query with Qgis onto a
layer opened for a network file, the computation is very slow and does
not use more than few percents of CPU. The same query done on a layer
opened from a local disk file is normaly performed.

I hope this could help anyone facing this performance problem.

Thank you for your attention

From own experience I can warmly recommend r.watershed (and r.stream.* if you
want to go beyond flow accumulation and flow direction) from GRASS 7.
Very powerful for heavy datasets.

Re: [Qgis-user] GDAL extension, filegdb, in QGIS

2014-05-21 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi,

Maybe it belongs to OSGeo4W (plugin update?)?

The OGR-SOSI driver behaves comparable, and here the 32bit plugin is compiled
against GDAL 1.10, while the 64bit plugin is compiled against GDAL 1.11.
In a 64bit version of QGIS 2.3, SOSI is available as a file type, in the 32bit
version not. Seems plugins have to be built against exactly the same GDAL
version which QGIS uses in order to be available there, which does make sense
to me...

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 2.0 / 2.2 auf Windows: Layer werden in Übersicht angezeigt, erscheinen aber nicht auf Karte

2014-05-05 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Did you check the coordinate system of your layer?

Maybe the default in your QGIS settings is WGS84 and your layer is projected
but lacks coordinate reference information (e.g. a .prj file). Then the default
CRS is used for your layer (WGS84 which is limited to +/-90 / +/-180) and the
e.g. UTM coordinates of your data exceed the bounds of the CRS.

If that is the case, assign the appropriate CRS in layer properties. That
should fix it (others correct me if I am wrong.).

Guten Tag,

Re: [Qgis-user] 300 plugins

2014-04-09 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi,

Several plugins already come with a more comprehensive description (in the
plugin manager) of what the plugin does (e.g. Data Driven Input Mask plugin).
For me personally, that would be enough information to start with (for details,
trying the plugin is nevertheless almost inevitable in most cases).
I guess most of the plugins documented that way are newer ones (or at least
with newer versions) which make use of the excellent, relatively new plugin
manager interface and the corresponding options in metadata.txt.

Yet, there seem to be different ways to get that information into the plugin
manager: the about section in metadata.txt which e.g EasyCustomLabeling
plugin uses, but there must be also another way as the Data Driven Input Mask
plugin does not have such an about section in the metadata.txt (but it has a
description in the plugin manager).

As for the older description section in metadata.txt (which is printed in
bold letters in the plugin manager) I noticed quite different usage among
plugin-devs. Compare for example, MultiEdit and New Memory Layer.

The best way to improve the situation might be to simply write an email to all
plugin devs, inform them about the preferred policy regarding documentation and
encourage them to update their plugins.

Just an idea...

Cheers
Stefan

Re: [Qgis-user] Tablet vs GPS accuracy

2014-04-03 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hei Leo,

Unfortunately I do not recall where I read comparison of proper GPS and
Smartphones regarding precision. But as far as I remember precision difference
depends very much on where you are.
Smartphones (and also tablets I guess) make also use of the cell towers /
access points to the mobile network for positioning.
So, if you are working in towns or populated areas you get probably comparable
precision to a commercial GPS (a few meters difference). But if you are in
remote areas, difference can be more significant 20m and more...

Others please correct me if I am wrong...

And as Zoltan writes: what is good (or more precise suitable) depends on
your needs...

2013-12-06 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi

Good to hear that the plugin is of use.
I am not sure if I understood what you want to achieve.
In general it should be possible to remove the lower limit of the zoom-factor.
However, zooming out and then exporting the Garmin Custom Map / KMZ would give
the same result.

Btw, the zoom-factor does not affect the possibility to zoom on your Garmin
unit.

Or did you mean something else?

Re: [Qgis-user] creation of .gpx is not straightforward

2013-06-13 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
+1 for a more user-friendly export to GPX!

If I am not mistaken, export to GPX does not necessarily require
GPX_USE_EXTENSIONS=YES
GPX_EXTENSIONS_NS=YES
options...

The GPX format is indeed sensitive to field names and types, but these names
and types should be supported by default:
NameData type
nameText
ele Double
symbol Text
comment Text
description Text
source Text
url Text
(Where ele stands for elevation...)

So I think you need the GPX_EXTENSIONS only if you want to have other
columns/fields... (Correct me if I am wrong).

Maybe the different GPS-units a user might have also allow for different fields
in the GPX.

So there would be quite some things to consider in a Save as dialog...
Some users might possibly also struggle with the fact that not all geometry
types are supported by the format.

Long post, short message, Andre`s idea realizing this as a plugin might be the
most practical solution for the time being...

In such a plugin, table names could be mapped to GPX-namespace, possibly
geometry-types changed, or the GPX_EXTENSIONS activated if necessary, as well
as CRS changed to WGS 1984... The plugin could then go into the GPS-Tools
menu...

Cheers
Stefan

+1 for a bit more user-friendly save as...-dialog in general.

The problem with the creation options does not only apply to GPX (which might
be one of the most common formats), but also for KML, CSV, you name it.

Once a user understood what the data source and layer fields are meant for and
where to search for additional infos, the tool is really powerful.

But i fear that 90% of the users get lost on the way:
First a user has to realize that he needs those creations options when
something does not work as expected.
Then he has to click on the Help-Button to get the general informations which
he is not looking for.
Then he has to scroll down to find the tiny link telling about the supported
OGR vector formats: http://gdal.org/ogr/ogr_formats.html
There he has to search for the desired format and click the link (for GPX
http://www.gdal.org/ogr/drv_gpx.html)
There he has to scroll down some screens to find the creation options (called
Creation Issues there) Finally, he has to understand what the fuzz is all
about, what is necessary and what is just optional etc etc.

Because most people wont use that on a daily basis, they will just forget about
the procedure and have to start the exploration from the beginning when facing
problems.

I fear there is no easy way of presenting the options, otherwise our ingenious
developers would have already introduced something.

IMO work on this topic is really needed, cause not knowing the caveats of these
procedures causes many frustrations, troubles and bizarre workarounds to get
things done while under the hood, a powerful machine is waiting ...

Bernd

Re: [Qgis-user] Clipping tool for non-georeferenced data

2013-06-04 Per discussione Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi

The problem is the way you specified the srcwin parameter.
The syntax is:
-srcwin xoff yoff xsize ysize

So, if you want to clip out the upper left 40x50 cells from a 100x100 raster
for example your srcwin should look like this:
-srcwin 0 0 40 50

If you wanted to clip out the lower right 40x50 cells from a 100x100 raster for
example your srcwin should look like this:
-srcwin 60 50 40 50

Have a look here:
http://www.gdal.org/gdal_translate.html

As the error message indicates, negative values are not allowed...

Cheers

I understand that it is because the coordinate y is negative and the tool can't
