Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 0.9.2rc1, loading symbology style issue

We did discuss this a bit, but its problematic to do this in that part
of the 'style' may be to set a more user friendly name. Also applying
a default style from one layer to another could cause problems if they
 have different attributes etc.

In case of GRASS layers problems include crashes. Example:

1. Create a qml for any layer.
2. Add a GRASS vector that has a not exactly matching table.
3. Load the qml for the GRASS vector layer, Apply - segfault:

Re: [Qgis-user] [Qgis-developer] Python Geprocessing Plugin

2008-02-18 Thread John C. Tull
Horst,

I tried on OS X. Here are my observations and issues so far:

1) The installer does not work. I get a permissions error when trying
to use the python installer. Manual installation works ok.

2) When I run the plugin in a project with available vectors, the drop-
down menu for selecting a vector to geoprocess does not populate with
anything. So I am unable to perform any geoprocessing because there
are not vectors available to work on in the gui.

Because of problem 2), I am unable to get very far in testing this. I
will be around on the irc channel today and off-and-on this week if
you want to try and work out some things online.

Thanks,
John

This plugin is under developement and offers vector analysis
functions for ogr and postgis vector data.

 The following functions are available:
  - Buffer
  - Convex Hull
  - Difference A - B
  - Dissolve
  - Intersection

 under developement:
  - SymDifference
  - Union

The plugin needs QGIS Rev. 8153 or higher!

The plugin uses the GEOS library. I recommend the use of GEOS-3.0.0.

Unfortunately there are some issues with GEOS. In some cases GEOS
throws topology exceptions when you try to dissolve large datasets
 = QGIS crashes.

I hope that this plugin can be helpful for you and I look forward
 for your comments and ideas.

maybe it is because opensuse 10.2 uses QT version 4.2.1 instead of current

Hi Noriberto

I use engineering drawings in dxf format in QGIS with the help of GRASS.
If you have access to the source drawing of your building you should be
able to export a dxf from your architectural drawing application and
then use the GRASS command v.in.dxf. If you only have the pdf version
then all is not lost, but you will need the help of some additional
software to convert from pdf to dxf. Please see the following, if
required: http://www.pstoedit.net/

Concerning scales, QGIS works with the data internally using a 1:1
scale. You would need to ensure that your dxf is also 1:1 before
importing it and obviously pay attention to the coordinate systems.

Good luck

Craig.

[Qgis-user] QGIS 0.9.2rc1 String Freeze - Call for translators

2008-01-21 Thread Tim Sutton
Hi All (and especially translators)

As of today please note that we are entering string freeze for the run
up to the next release. If you are committing bug fixes please avoid
changing any strings. Translation .ts files have been updated in SVN
so please update your local svn checkouts. The period for translations
will close January 27 2008 (i.e. about one week from now) and then we
will be branching for release. Any translations submitted to us after
that time will only be included in the next release, so please submit
what you have by then even if it is not complete.

There was some discussion on the IRC channel today about the naming of
this release. I would like to proceed with the release as planned but
there are a great deal of new features incorporated from branches in
this release which inevitably means new bugs. So not wanting to
deviate from our release schedule, but at the same time wanting to
indicate the fact that there are a number of unresolved issues, we
will be going about the normal release process, but releasing as QGIS
0.9.2rc1 (rc signifying release candidate). It is our hope that by
building packages and making a rc release we can give early adopters
ready to use binaries to commence more detailed testing and bug
reporting. We will follow up 0.9.2rc1 with a bug triage release
focusing on stabilising new features and improving render performance.

As always you can track the release plans via the checklist at:

http://wiki.qgis.org/qgiswiki/ReleaseChecklist0.9.2

(I will update this page to indicate the rc1 status soon)

If you have any questions about the translation process, please see
the following page which I have recently updated with instructions on
how to generate a .ts file for a new locale.

http://wiki.qgis.org/qgiswiki/TranslatorsCorner

Many thanks to all the translators out there for the great work you do!

Regards,

Hi Paolo,

The main idea of the development in branches is that qgis main branch (trunk)
is always in a (relatively) stable state. So it is best to test the branches
before the merge.

In practice, there will always be issues in trunk after a merge. But the less
issues the better.

Best regards,
Marco

more sense to me if each sipxxx.cpp depended upon xxx.sip and Python was
invoked only to generate the .cpp file leaving CMake to take care of
 compiling and linking C++ files.

I know that the way how the compilation of PyQGIS works now isn't
optimal at all, however I wasn't able to figure out any better
solution. Python modules sipconfig and pyqtconfig do all the hard work
detecting correct parameters for compilation for all supported
platforms/compilers.

Looking at sipconfig I see it supports universal builds - try this:
in configure.py.in add argument universal='/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk'
to sipconfig.ModuleMakefile() constructor - when creating variables
makefile_core and makefile_gui
It should do exactly the same as Tom has written manually to makefiles...

I thought it might be something there. Thanks.

Is it possible for the python cmakelists to see that a user specified -

2007-12-18 Thread Dan Dittmann
I encountered similar symptoms but was able to get version .91 up and
running on my MacBook Pro (with Leopard).

I downloaded and updated Python from
http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.5.1/python-2.5.1-macosx.dmg

After doing so, I ran into the same problem again. Combing through the
read me for answers, I found I had not installed the needed frameworks
so I found a DMG with the Unix compatibility frameworks on my other
computer. Still, it did not work so I began manually updating
frameworks based from clues in Console.

After downloading and installing two or three frameworks from
http://www.kyngchaos.com/wiki/software:frameworks
, I was able to get it up and running.

Now the only problem I have relates to getting postgis layers working.
Since I found

I did not notice this in my attempt to make the Qgis python stuff
python-agnostic. Looks like I need separate Qgis builds for Tiger and
Leopard. I'll get a new build ready later this evening.

I don't know why Qgis crashed, though. It should just ignore the
missing Python and disable Python features. Do you have Python

I work around the problem by editing the two generated Makefiles in

finished.

To CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS add
-isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk -arch i386 -arch ppc

-Wl,-syslibroot,/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk -arch i386 -arch ppc

This can be done after the build is done or you can interrupt the build

Adding my 2 [insert currency unit of choice] a bit late. The main
problems I have with the GRASS implementation in Qgis as it currently
stands:

1) Duplication of layers between grass mapsets and qgis shapefiles,
assuming you do any edits in qgis, which I much prefer to using GRASS
editing tools.

2) No access to the grass shell within Qgis in Mac OS X. This requires
me to open grass, then open qgis from grass and go back and forth
between apps to perform grass analyses. I've no idea why the grass
shell is broken in OS X, although I suspect it is a Qt issue. See
https://svn.qgis.org/trac/ticket/739

Those are the main show-stoppers for me. I agree with the general
comments about utilizing GRASS and, maybe, ossim to leverage those
capabilities. But I do not see any problem in future development of
analytical tools in qgis.

the Classify templates be feasible?

Right now doing the customized stretch is lots of work, the result
isn't transferrable, and occasional hit of Claassify button resets
everything in the stretch.

2007-11-04 Thread Tim Sutton
Hi Marco

I'm in agreement for getting out a 0.9.1 release as soon as possible.
However Tisham who does the windows builds is away till the end of
November so I think its not possible to release before early Dec as I
dont yet have the complete win compilation environment set up.

I agree that branches shouldnt be merged in till post 0.9.1. I will
try over the next few weeks to get test builds made for all platforms
of the Raster and Editing branches (but without all the extra bits
that Tisham does on win so no python, no grass support). We can post
thos for Agostin and others who would like to participate early on in
the quality assurance process before these branches are merged.

 Hi all,

I'm in favour of a bugfix release 0.9.1 that is very soon and contains only
 small changes.
In my opinion, the branches should be tested and merged after that as they
contain bigger changes that habe higher risk of side effects.
Tim, what's your opinion on this as release manager?

If the functionality in raster transparency branch is very important for some
tasks, why not checkout the code in the branch, compile qgis and work with
 it?

Sorry for the thread hijack and the ignorance in this question. In
order to checkout and build the advanced editing branch, do you simply
checkout that using svn with something like:
svn co https://svn.qgis.org/repos/qgis/branches/
advanced_editing_branch adv_edit
then build from that directory (adv_edit) as normal?

I tried this today (rev 7316) and was not able to build on OS X where
I can build trunk. If you want some output for debugging, I'd be happy
to send anything your way. I just wanted to make sure I was going at
this the right way. If so, I can move follow-ups to qgis-dev if you
are interested in working out issues on my platform at this point.

Hi All,

I just read from a local bulletin that QGIS was mostly developed by
American developers. Looking at the list of developers and contributing
developers for QGIS and also the list of commercial support entities, I
don't quite see a domination of Americans. I'm not trying to spur a
flamewar here. I'm just a bit surprised a project like QGIS is being
tagged as American when it mostly appears to be an international
project, like all large successful FOSS projects, but maybe it *is* and
American-led project?

TIA,

Where did you read this (URL?)??

QGIS has never been promoted as an American product. It was founded
in the US but
if you look at the commits to the source repository, there are more
international
developers than US. Its success is the result of global effort by
developers, contributors,
and supporters.

I believe this is just an unfortunate characterization by someone who

The fix I made is to remove the synchronous network request inside the
draw event with async requests which must be completed before starting
to draw. This also speeds things up for multiple WMS layers since all
layers are requested in parallel rather than serially.

I did basically the same today, but I was still looking for a clean way
trigger a refresh after the WMS request completes inside the provider.

 available ony for PostGis tables?

 MAPCOMPOSER
The value of the rappresentative scale is not realistic. The values are
 too small.
The SVG creator does not work
It is not possible to choose where the pdf is saved and the created pdf
 seems to be damaged.
 Bad rendering about points vector.

 POSTGIS TABLE EDITING
Trying to edit a a postgis-table, I changed a value in the table but when I
 click on 'Stop editing' QGIS
 say:

The PostgreSQL database returned: ERROR: syntax error at or near =
 LINE 1: UPDATE public.rm98_2007_lin SET ='34455' WHERE gid=1
Durante la prova: UPDATE public.rm98_2007_lin SET ='34455' WHERE

I think the problem is in the double quotes: public.rm98_2007_lin.

Version 0.9 is not released due to some last minute issues. Instead,
a second preview version was released the end of August. Since it is
a preview, packages for most platforms have not been created.

There is no firm release date at this time---it depends on when the
remaining major issues can be resolved.

[Qgis-user] QGIS 0.9.0 bugfix delay

2007-08-31 Thread Tim Sutton
Hi All

Some of you may have noticed that I tagged 0.9.0 two nights ago. I
have not yet made any announcements regarding 0.9.0 release. Because
of the number of bug reports coming in
and since there seem to be so many issues with the code base as it
stands, I would like to suggest retagging 0.9 as 0.9preview2 and delay
the release for another 2 weeks to allow for more bug fixing.

Could I ask everyone who has pending stability patches to please apply
them and motivate those who may have been itching to do some bug
fixing to give it a go! We really need everyones help if we are to
produce a stable product!

We would also like to remind you that we have a small amount of funds
donated by our user community available to support bug fixing, so if
you are a student or otherwise looking to make a bit of spare cash,
this is a great opportunity to support the QGIS project and at the
same time get a little less poor! If you are interested please email
our project steering committee chairman:

Gary Sherman gsherman [at] mrcc.com

Please use the subject line: BUG FIXING

Yours sincerely,

[Qgis-user] QGIS project brochure

2007-08-24 Thread Otto Dassau
Hi,

there is an updated version of the 2-sided qgis brochure available in svn. It
can be used as QGIS promotion material and provides an overview about the
capabilities of Quantum GIS 0.9 for fairs, conferences etc in english. The
brochure is done with scribus (you need a current version).

A tagged brochure version is available in svn (checkout as guest):
svn co https://svn.qgis.org/repos/qgis_docs/tags/0.9.0_brochure

We will also provide a pdf on the qgis.org documentation website within the next
days, I guess.

A translation branch is planned as well.

You find more information about the QGIS brochure and how to contribute here:
http://wiki.qgis.org/qgiswiki/QGIS_Brochure

At the moment we are trying to improve our project management process and
spread the load more evenly between people who each have a specific area of
resposibility. Therefore we would like to encourage you to help! Any
contribution you have to make will be greately appreciated.

BTW: We also added a 1 page description of the QGIS project to the OSGeo VisCom
brochure. We hope it will be available for upcoming conferences (foss4g,...)

Who/What is responsible for constructing/initialising QApplication?

Can there be a (configuration) reason that it's not there (yet)?

Re: [Qgis-user] qgis python plugins / bindings on windows

2007-08-21 Thread Richard Duivenvoorde
Hi Aaron,

I'm using a plain vanilla python 2.5 (Python 2.5 (r25:51908, Sep 19
2006, 09:52:17)) msi-install (in c:\Program Files\, could that be a
problem?)
I installed the binary QT4 (PyQt-Py2.5-gpl-4.3.0-b1.exe) from:
http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/pyqt/download.php

And a qgis preview build qgis_setup0.9.0preview1.16.08.2007.exe from
... some link of the list
I've also tried a build from Martin from the list
http://www.mapserver.sk/~wonder/qgis/qgis-trunk-070619-grass.zip

All with the same errors.

What are the qgis- python- qt- related environment variables you have?
And exactly what PATH-constructs do you use?

From the thread about the QgsApplication.setPrefixPath() there are
some incompatible lib/version issues? I hope this can be worked
out/documented later.

I will try a clean install later, or I've got a debian work station too,
maby I've to switch to that and use stuff from:
http://debian.gfoss.it

Another option is building stuff myself, like you propose, do you think
that's doable for a lightweight script person :-)

Thanks,

Richard Duivenvoorde

[Qgis-user] qgis python plugins / bindings on windows

2007-08-20 Thread Richard Duivenvoorde
Hi List,

after reading the python plugin wiki pages I became excited and wanted
to try to build my first python plugin (using the 0.9.0 preview binary
on windows). And failed because of some complexities (for me :-( )

I downloaded SIP and PyQt4.3, but failed to install them because I don't
have '(c)make' installed etc etc. Because SIP and PyQT are not fully
installed (python configure ok, but make not possible...), Qgis gives a
warning about not being able to use the python bindings.

My questions (hopefully this will be a quickstart the for all c-noobs
like me):

- will you need a c-build environment (including make) to make python
plugins? Now or after the 'real' 0.9 release?

- or is (will be) there another way to start hacking python plugins (eg.
some huge qgis install including sip, python and pyqt or so??).

- if c-make etc is needed, what is the easiest way to start on windows:
mingw, eclipse, visual studio, cygwin?

- how 'portable' will a python plugin be? If I develop a plugin on my
debian box, can this plugin be used on 'vanilla qgis install' on windows
also then (given the user installed python)?

I fear that I underestemated the python story, but will try anyway.
There are so much nice free arcview3 scripts available to 'port' to
qgis, and python seems a ideal language for this.

TIA

Hi Richard!

When using binaries (i.e. you don't build qgis by yourself), you can
avoid installation of the build environment. On PyQt download page,
there's a binary package for windows with all stuff that you might
need: http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/pyqt/download.php

So, in your case you would need to install only Python 2.5 and PyQt
binary package. QGIS python bindings then should load correctly. I'll
add a note about this on wiki...

 - or is (will be) there another way to start hacking python plugins (eg.
some huge qgis install including sip, python and pyqt or so??).

I hope this question is answered with the answer above.

 - if c-make etc is needed, what is the easiest way to start on windows:
 mingw, eclipse, visual studio, cygwin?

MinGW is the best option here (and also only one officially supported)
- cygwin or msvc might or might not work for you. Btw. Eclipse doesn't
include a compiler by itself, but it can handle mingw and cygwin.

 - how 'portable' will a python plugin be? If I develop a plugin on my
debian box, can this plugin be used on 'vanilla qgis install' on windows
also then (given the user installed python)?

If you won't use any OS-dependent python modules, it will be portable
- everything will just work :)

I fear that I underestemated the python story, but will try anyway.
There are so much nice free arcview3 scripts available to 'port' to
qgis, and python seems a ideal language for this.

I hope that getting python bindings to work won't be a headache. If
  you encounter any problems,

Ah I confess to not going back to the archives... I guess we could always
put in a USE_RPATH flag into cmake so people can pick their preference and
then just wrap the rpath stuff in a

 IF (USE_RPATH)
   blah
 ENDIF (USE_RPATH)

 How does that sound?

Going again through discussions on several mailing lists (debian,
cmake, kde), I still don't know how to do this right. Some say that
using rpath is great because it forces to use harcoded runtime paths,
other say it's evil because of that. Bad thing is that rpath overrides
LD_LIBRARY_PATH setting, which might be confusing. Also it adds some
pain to distributors (IMHO). But it makes life easier for users which
compile the software by themselves and don't use packaged versions.

So, what to do? I would say that the best choice is to forget rpath
completely and let users set LD_LIBRARY_PATH manually. But if you
insist to use rpath, then the best way is the one you propose: make it
configureable and turn it on by default.

Hi,

for testing QGIS 0.9.0 Preview 1 on opensuse 10.2 (32bit) packages can be
downloaded here.

Python Language Binding is not yet included in that package, because of

Subject: [Qgis-user] QGIS for Windows cannot recognize some folders

I was used with QGIS and GRASS under Linux and had a trial on the
Windows compiled version (wanting to use it on teaching purpose where
Unix is unavailable). Fantastic piece of work thanks to Tim Sutton!

In this compiled version, I have been quite surprised that some folders
canot be seen in the dialog window when trying to look for a file,
whatever from the Open a projet, Add a vector layer or Add a raster

layer menus (not sure of the translation, I am working on a French
version).

For instance I have two folders called 'Maerkang' and 'Mammalia' that
cannot be seen when all the many others are fine. The unread paths are:

U:\Documents and Settings\giraudoux\Mes documents\Mammalia
U:\Documents and Settings\giraudoux\Mes documents\Maerkang

When the followings and others are well listed:
...
U:\Documents and Settings\giraudoux\Mes documents\Marco
U:\Documents and Settings\giraudoux\Mes documents\Map tools
...

Furthermore, when 'Mammalia' is copied/renamed to 'Copy of Mammalia',
Copy of Mammalia is well visible and can be read. Same for Maerkang.

Any idea about what happens?

Patrick

[Qgis-user] QGIS 0.9.0 Preview 1

2007-07-27 Thread Tim Sutton
Hi All

Today I've tagged 0.9.0 Preview 1 as per our release plan at

http://wiki.qgis.org/qgiswiki/ReleaseChecklist0.9

You can check out a copy doing:

svn co https://svn.qgis.org/repos/qgis/tags/Preview-0.9.0-1 qgis0.9.0Preview1

This should bring into effect the following things:

 - string freeze for UI - if you are a developer please dont change
any more UI elements or translatable strings
- call for translators to update ts files
- call for document managers to update docs based on new features in SVN
- call for packagers to create preview binaries

A source bundle for preview 1 will be made available soon.

Now is the time we call on your help to produce translations, update
documentation etc. You dont need to be a programmer to be of
assistance - all you need to do is be willing to donate some time and
have a computer.

Note that automake and qmake build systems are completely removed and
using cmake is the only way to build QGIS 0.9.0 preview 1. Please see
the INSTALL document in the source tree for detailed notes for your
platform. http://wiki.qgis.org/qgiswiki/BuildingFromSource Also
contains updated build notes for all platforms.

Many thanks for all who are pitching in to make this release happen.

Best regards

There was some discussion half a year ago on how this should be done.

The consensus (then) was that no special path should be compiled into

[Qgis-user] QGIS 0.9 cannot find libqgis_core.so

2007-07-22 Thread Maciej Sieczka
Hi

I have just successfully built and installed QGIS 0.9 with cmake first
time ever. Steps were as follows:

1. svn co https://svn.qgis.org/repos/qgis/trunk/qgis qgis09
2. mkdir build
3. cd build
4. cmake -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/local/qgis09 -D WITH_GRASS=ON -D
GRASS_PREFIX=/usr/local/grass-6.3.cvs ..
5. make
6. sudo make install

No errors spotted in the process. But trying to run it, I get an error:

$ /usr/local/qgis09/bin/qgis
/usr/local/qgis09/bin/qgis: error while loading shared libraries:
libqgis_core.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

The library is where it shouild be, I guess:

$ ls -l /usr/local/qgis09/lib/

Mars, do you mean that (1) Qgis crashes while loading the raster or
 (2)
that the raster loads successfully and Qgis crashes later while

But, I don't know if this would be the same as the crash when you
try to load the PNG directly...

[Qgis-user] QGIS-0.8.1 crash dealing with large PNG file

2007-07-09 Thread Mars Sjoden
I am having problems with QGIS continually crashing when using a
Large (135MB) geo-referenced PNG raster relief image.

I have used this raster file in many other GIS apps, including
ArcMap, ArcScene, UDIG,

I have also tried this file as a geo-TIF which boosts the file size
to 147MB, and QGIS is still unstable.

Is this due to memory usage allocation?

MacBook Pro 2GB of RAM, OSX.4.10, Kyng Chaos Frameworks, QGIS, GRASS 6.3

Running QGIS solitary with no other user applications.

ie. GRASS also crashes when using this file size.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGis Fedora Build Error

2007-05-17 Thread Elavazhagan.M
I somehow managed to configure, build and install qgis-0.8.0 WITHOUT
Postgres. Hope this post will be useful for someone who'll be facing the
same issues.
These are the steps I followed:

1. Installed all qgis-0.8.0 dependencies as per the document. In
particular installed 'qt-x11-opensource-src-4.2.3' under the location
'/usr/local/Trolltech/Qt-4.2.3'.
2. Configured qgis using the the following command:
./configure --with-qtdir=/usr/local/Trolltech/Qt-4.2.3
--prefix=/usr/local/qgis
(Note: I didn't mention about other libraries like gdal, geos etc...
These are taken automatically as they are usually installed in the
default location.)
3. After successful configuration, I issued the command 'make' (this
will take some time) and then the command 'sudo make install'
4. 'qgis' execuatble can be foung at '/usr/local/qgis/bin'.
5. In command prompt go to the location '/usr/local/qgis' and issue the
command './bin/qgis'. or In a file browser go to the location
'/usr/local/qgis/bin' and then open (double click on) 'qgis' executable
file. qgis application will be loaded for you.
6. That's all !!!.

I'm not sure whether this is the correct way to install qgis but it
worked for me. Someone please correct if I'm wrong.
Hope you find this post useful. Will try with Postgres and let you asap.

Regards,
Ela

[Qgis-user] Qgis 0.8 on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

2007-05-04 Thread Tomas Lanczos

Hello,

at first I installed to my comp running Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn the Qgis
7.4 from the Ubuntu repository, then I tried 0.8 binary from the
http://les-ejk.cz/ubuntu edgy multiverse, later I tried also Qgis 8.0
from the http://debian.gfoss.it/ etch main. Does not matter witch
version from where, the grass plugin does not work. Every time I mark
the Grass plugin and click OK the qgis just closing without any warning
or errormessage. If I start from commandline, I get the following
message after the qgis is closed:

qgis: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libqgisgrass.so.1: undefined symbol:
G_set_error_routine.

Does somebody have a similar experience and/or have a workaround
proposal, pls.?

[Qgis-user] qgis 0.8.0 avaialble in Mandriva 2007 Spring

2007-04-20 Thread Buchan Milne
Just a note that qgis 0.8.0 with grass support (grass 6.2.1) is available in
Mandriva 2007.1 (aka Mandriva 2007 Spring), in the contrib repo.

After adding a contrib repo to urpmi (e.g. by following the instructions at
http://urpmi-addmedia.org) or using the Software Management tools to do so, a
qgis+grass setup can be installed by running:

urpmi libqgisgrass0
or
urpmi lib64qgisgrass0
on x86_64

These packages contain the qgis grass library and plugin, and will pull in the
qgis and grass packages.

It would be appreciated if information to this effect could be provided on
this page: http://download.qgis.org/qgis/

I can provide more detail if required/desired.

Regards,
Buchan
