Sure, ie; "I work reliably without windows." As a matter I fact I do. In a basement room 7x5 feet, no windows. Combination "ham shack" and computer room. Dennis, it is quite 'neat' but as mentioned before, it helps to have a bit of proper discipline when making sure that the home base is correctly updated and vice versa. I'm looking at Thierry's TGBack program to assist - time will tell. Cheers, Norman. PS. The zip disc is fast enough to be usable too. I have the QPC2v2 software installed on it because I'm not allowed to 'install' unauthorised software at work, so I never actually install it, just run it :o) - Norman Dunbar Database/Unix administrator Lynx Financial Systems Ltd. mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Tel: 0113 289 6265 Fax: 0113 289 3146 URL: http://www.Lynx-FS.com - -Original Message- From: Dennis Sutherland [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2002 3:59 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [ql-users] "seasonal cheer, Silly Season" - Original Message - From: "Norman Dunbar" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, January 07, 2002 2:23 AM Subject: RE: [ql-users] "seasonal cheer, Silly Season" > Morning Dennis, > I have the system installed on a 100Mb Zip disc which I take > back and forth with me so I have the same setup at home and > at work. > Regards, > Norman. And here's a funny one : a Linux user wanted, for some reason, to run MS Exchange on his Linux server, so he installed WINE and set it all up. Exchange worked like a sweet thing and he was mightily impressed - until he subsequently got an Exchange Virus and his installation was trashed :o) Luckily, it didn't bring down anything other than Exchange, but it just goes to show how 'effective' WINE is at emulating Windows. I still use WIndows 95 because my PC is quite old and I suspect anything more recent would cripple it. Some versions of Windows 98 might not be able to write properly to DD disks, which might be a consideration if you exchange DD disks with other QLers, as a significant number still use DD disks. Windows 95 will not support USB devices (the OSR2 version of Win95 has a limited support only) on a PC, important if you intend to try to use those devices - my printer has parallel and USB ports, I'd hoped to connect the parallel port to the Aurora and USB to the PC to avoid the need for a printer switch (someone on this list said that might be possible), but the lack of support for USB on Win 95 I never bothered to add the connection which the motherboard supports The fact that various people pop up heere saying Win x is bad and somebody else pops up saying no Win x is good on my system probably means it ain't all bad. I can cite users happily using QPC2 on most Windows systems. QPC2 is not the only emulator either, but if you mwant to use SMSQE it is currently the only one. Failing that, wait for the Q60 to go into production with D&D Systems and you'll get the best SMSQE system there currently is. Basically, if a version of Windows works well and is stable on your PC, QPC2 will almost certainly work well on that system. It is designed to run on anything from Win95 onwards, and I have happy experience of running it on Win95 and Win NT4 where I used to work. As I've found to my cost, blaming problems on Windows or QPC2 is all too easy, there are so many variables in modern hardware and software that often no one thing is at fault but a combination of factors as with my recent problems with the Stlus 800 printer from QPC2 (now resolved...I'm happily printing from both OSes again). Don't be afraid of QPC2 on a Win 98 system, just be afraid of Windows in general ! -- Dilwyn Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.soft.net.uk/dj/index.html

As it did I. =8-) I take it from recent posts that W98 is not the ideal platform for QPC2 and SMSQ/E? Or anything else it seems, by my experience lately. Dennis N9VRB ICQ# 801900
