My system used to be a CD-R with QPC on it which stayed at work (like
Norman, no installation required) then a floppy disk for data transfer
between my previous place of work and home. It worked of course, but
usually no time to do any QLing at work!

Of course in three cases
Case 1.
Prefix the word windows with the word Glass :-)
Case 2
Prefix the word Windows with the Letter X (as in X-Windows)
Case 3.
Suffix the word Windows with the number 3.11 :-) (After lots of updates)

Of course they can, as in you can't get Windows to work reliable
Actually to be fair I think you can, for a month or so until it manages

Morning Dennis,

I use QPC2v2 on Win2K at work and on Win98 at home. I have the system
installed on a 100Mb Zip disc which I take back and forth with me so I have
the same setup at home and at work. Well, that's the theory, at work the zip
is win1_ and at home it is win2_ and I even remember to backup my home Win1
to Win2 occasionally. The problem is when I have done stuff at work and
forgotten to synchronise with win1 at home and then 'update' my zip from the
'real' win1 at home hence losing all the stuff I did at work.

Brain problems :o)

Norman.

You have quite a gap between work and home I assume (unlike my 1 minute)
so clocks need not be too accurate.

Simply read all file attributes in designated directories and copy

I think that is one of the major failings of QDOS/SMSQ - that date

I know 'backup' in QPAC2 is better, but date stamps should be absolutely

Basically, if a version of Windows works well and is stable on your
PC, QPC2 will almost certainly work well on that system. It is
designed to run on anything from Win95 onwards, and I have happy
experience of running it on Win95 and Win NT4 where I used to work. As
I've found to my cost, blaming problems on Windows or QPC2 is all too
easy, there are so many variables in modern hardware and software that
often no one thing is at fault but a combination of factors as with my
recent problems with the Stlus 800 printer from QPC2 (now
resolved...I'm happily printing from both OSes again). Don't be afraid
of QPC2 on a Win 98 system, just be afraid of Windows in general !

All emulators are using the 'host' as the carrier for the emulated
system. The discussion on this list does show that stabilty and
performance is high for most people using them. Hopefully the sharing
of ideas teases out any remaining difficulties.

At present Windows is the most popular system running on home and
business computers ... so it has to be worked with as it is.

Not necessarily. I still use WIndows 95 because my PC is quite old and
I suspect anything more recent would cripple it.

Some versions of Windows 98 might not be able to write properly to DD
disks, which might be a consideration if you exchange DD disks with
other QLers, as a significant number still use DD disks. Windows 95
will not support USB devices (the OSR2 version of Win95 has a limited
support only) on a PC, important if you intend to try to use those
devices - my printer has parallel and USB ports, I'd hoped to connect
the parallel port to the Aurora and USB to the PC to avoid the need
for a printer switch (someone on this list said that might be
possible), but the lack of support for USB on Win 95 I never bothered
to add the connection which the motherboard supports

The fact that various people pop up heere saying Win x is bad and
somebody else pops up saying no Win x is good on my system probably
means it ain't all bad. I can cite users happily using QPC2 on most
Windows systems. QPC2 is not the only emulator either, but if you
mwant to use SMSQE it is currently the only one. Failing that, wait
for the Q60 to go into production with DD Systems and you'll get the
best SMSQE system there currently is.

After the lockups, blue screen of death and so forth of the
past month,
I was sorely tempted. There are Q60's available now but the
pricing is not
firm due to the euro faze. DD expects a week will settle it
down. No
firm price now.

Don't be afraid of QPC2 on a Win 98 system, just be afraid of
 Windows in general !

Any Windows version is in IMHO only an ideal platform for the
next
version of Windows, however as I tired of lining big Bill's
pockets I've
 stuck at W98.

 all the best - Bill
