"Running qmail" - by Richard Blum
Short review: It may work as a thicker replacement for Adam McKennas (no offense Adam!) qmail-HOWTO. It basically is a book that let's you set up a FreeBSD-box with qmail. It's title should therefore have been "Installation description for FreeBSD/qmail MTA". It does NOT meet the "life-with-qmail" (by Dave Sill) standard. * It tries to cover to much. Yes, there are interesting with a DNS-chapter, but please skip trivial things and focus on MAIL things. As an example; I found no mention of the very common CNAME configuration error. What had been good * It is too FreeBSD-centric. It includes comments for Linux but is way to much NON-generic. * Things are in wrong order. First an installation description without daemontools. Then a daemontools chapter first after a strange chapter about ezmlm. Whats good? It's quite hard to tell. * It covers daemontools 0.70. But not better than anyone else on the net including djb. * It covers dnscache (now djbdns). Really. Summary: DON'T BUY IT unless you just want a thick installation manual for a FreeBSD-qmail-box. Use life-with-qmail and http://www.qmail.org/ instead. I'll come back with a REAL review next week. /magnus -- http://x42.com/

Re: Book: 'Running qmail'
I've bought the book and as for quality I have to say it is mediocre. It starts out with descriptions of e-mail in general, qmail service, DNS and SMTP. Then it runs through installation and configuration and advanced qmail topics. The advanced topics cover mailing lists, daemontools (inetd is covered in the text), POP and IMAP servers, PPP server and supporting dial-in-clients. I found Part I lacking and the book would have lost little if it had been left out or trimmed down. Parts II and III were not bad but LWQ covered just as much. It actually looks as if Blum took LWQ and just modified it just a little. The PPP section is not that useful, I feel, to the beginning user as it would be something an ISP would use but what ISP would want to run qmail with inetd, which is what is used in the installation section. I referred to the book for some of the control file descriptions. The descriptions in the book are a bit more verbose than the man pages so better for newbies. Overall, I think that the book may benefit newbies who have had no exposure to e-mail before and want to or have to set up a mail server (some of the people on this list would fit the bill from what I've seen). But for anybody who's had any experience with e-mail or is comfortable with unix admin I would recommend Life With Qmail and the man pages. I set up my server using LWQ and the man pages and haven't looked at the book since. 2 1/2 stars. Beginners only. As far as I understand, unless a licence is given, all rights are reserved. I didn't know this when I started writing programs, so later on I had to put a blanket statement on my web site saying all my programs that were written before a certain date are public-domain. I hope it will suffice; it'd suck to have to revise all my programs just to put in a public-domain notice. ---Chris K. -- Chris, the Young One |_ but what's a dropped message between friends? RE: how to get off the mailing list?
> -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Sam Carleton > Can someone enlighten me as to how to remove myself from this mailing > list? Some mailing lists provide unsubscribe information in each message, others in a "Welcome message" at the time you join (you keep all those, right?), still others do nothing and expect you to remember how you signed up and then use the key to correct the situation. In the event the key is not available, the following general information should be kept to ensure you do not receive excess email. This is what you need to do. Please read these instructions carefully before beginning. Tools needed: one hammer, one screwdriver, one pair of pliers, one heavy-duty pair of wire cutters, one bucket of saline water, a box of sani-wipes. Step #1: Stop payment on any checks that you may have sent to your Internet Service Provider (GOD). Step #2: If GOD is unresponsive and you are still receiving mail from this list, you will need to find the "mailhost". This is a machine usually located in a locked office. Every day around noon, the mailman will deliver a box of diskettes with that day's mail messages, including yours from this list, to this machine. Typically, only a handful of people have keys to the "mailhost". The reason why this machine is locked up is because this is typically the best, fastest, most powerful computer at your facility and the people with keys don't want to share it. If you must, break or pry the door down with one (1) hammer (you did get all the tools needed?). Step #3: Find the ON/OFF switch for this machine. Using the pliers, set the switch to the OFF position by tugging downwards until the disposable plastic switch breaks away from the computer casing. Discard the disposable plastic switch in an environmental-friendly manner. This will alert the mailman to not deliver the diskettes with the messages to the "mailhost" not unlike the little red flag found on mailboxes. This should resolve your mail problem immediately. Step #4: You may experience a recurrence of mail within 72 hours. If this should happen, you will need to disable the "mailhost" once again with more forceful measures. Repeat Step #2. Don't be suprised if there is a sturdier door in place than the one you destroyed previously. This is due to the fact that the "Have Key" clique found out that someone has seen their private stash of computer equipment. Step #5: After you have once again regained entry into the "mailhost" room, open up the back of the "mailhost". There may be a large tv-like device on top of the "mailhost" You will need to remove this first. Take your wire cutters, and cut any cables binding the tv-like device to the "mailhost". Set the tv-like device to the side. With your screwdriver, remove each and every screw that you can find on the "mailhost". Once this is done, the "mailhost" should break away into two or more pieces. Step #5: Find a large box with a fan attached to it. It will be clearly marked with the following labels: "Danger" "High Voltage" "Do not open - no user-servicable parts". Don't worry, these labels are merely in place to satisfy OSHA requirements and you are not in any danger at all. Take the bucket of saline water and pour it into any vents or ports that the large box may have. Any extra water should be poured directly into the computer chassis, be sure to properly soak each and every component. Step #6: In the event of fire (OSHA has been known to be right on occassion), douse any flames with the sani-wipes. This solution is provided without warranty. It is not bio-degradable or fat-free. In the event of sudden death, contact a physician immediately. Thanks to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Brian Marriott) for this info. Hope this helps. Have a nice day.

We desire e-mail duplication
In order to test a backup set of servers with live traffic, we would like to duplicate the messages coming in and direct the copy to the backup servers. They will black-hole the messages after processing them. Would this be possible to do with an alias rule or something like that, perhaps one that injects the mail into another queue which is forwarded to our other servers? Or maybe write some sort of custom filter that puts the same message in two queues? Any thoughts? It seems like it shouldn't be too hard the way qmail is designed. The > only time you need more than one A record in a zone is when it's > different. I don't think your advice is going to solve his problem, nor do I quite understand your reasoning. Granted that using CNAMEs can be convenient when services are moved, but there is absolutely no harm in not using CNAMEs at all. CNAME lookups take longer, even. For spam-checking, the remote host will do a lookup on the A and MX record for your domain name. If it gets neither, but there are NS records for the domain, the message is deferred. If no NS records, it's not in the root servers, it gets rejected. I don't see how messing around with all of his records is going to change the result. In my mind, what is likely happening is that the lookups are merely timing out, so the message is deferred. I noted a peculiar delay when querying those name servers. When the records are expired from the cache on the name server those machines are using, it could be they aren't getting any answer from teoi.net in a timely manner, so the mail is deferred. It could also be true that the name servers those mail servers are using just plain suck or the mail servers themselves need to be reconfigured (perhaps they are using name servers in a seperate collision domain and the link in between is congested, hell I dunno). Forward and reverse lookups match just fine. I don't see a thing wrong with that zone, really. > smtp1D IN CNAME serverlookups here That CNAME points to a valid A record, so do the others. How does that create a "nested lookup?" > localhost 1D IN A 127.0.0.1 <---localhost.lsbsolutions.com? ppl > can't get to it, so why in DNS? Hmm, why indeed? Well, how about for software that doesn't use /etc/hosts, like qmail? If it weren't in the DNS, they would not even know what the IP address for "localhost" is! That's but one argument in favor of a "localhost" A record. I think geographical and network-diverse name servers are what he needs. If you note, they are both within the same network, which we know can lead to DNS outage. :) Aaron

variable mail delivery
Hi there! I have a dial-up ppp connection from a single computer to my ISP and use a free SMTP- and POP3-server to fetch and send email for ALL local users. Configuration of qmail is essentially as described in the mailqueue-howto and everything works fine. (maildir for outgoing mail is /var/qmail/alias/pppout, owned by user alias). However it'd be nice to have qmail send the mail directly to the mail server IF and only if a connection is established and ELSE put it into pppout. (flushed in the ip-up script of pppd, run suid root) To possibly save(?) some time: 1) Every time a user builds up a connection, mail of ALL users should be sent out. (Otherwise separate maildirs that are flushed before shutting down the connection would work; now impossible due to security). 2) I tried to set this up with a condredirect statement, but once the mail has become local I understand that it will be ugly to reconstruct the recipients from the message header. 3) Surely it's inacceptable not to store mail in pppout and to let qmail-remote retry message delivery until a PPP connection is up (even computers have better things to do, and think of the retry schedule :) 4) Hope I'm right that this hasn't got anything to do with inetd/tcpserver??? Any ideas how to make this work? I know that this is not exactly what qmail was designed for, but if everything else works out well, .. maybe .. I wouldn't be surprised if it was impossible, since my way is doubtful even to me. Someone should reassure me to let go the approach of sending out mail of ALL users in ip-up... Thanks in advance, sorry for any mistakes (English or qmailish), Ingo

That's an Outlookism that it spits out when it really does not know what is going on (like all of the time). "No transport provider .." bah! If you could provide the actual error message that qmail-smtpd spits out, and that reasonable mailers will show you, that certainly would help a lot. In any case, the problem is (almost) certainly that RELAYCLIENT is not set for the connection, hence qmail does not allow you to relay to any domain not in rcpthosts. Aaron

Lurk in #debian on openprojects.net sometime. But thats ok, I mean thats partly why #debian is there. Now what I'd really like to see is Debian move towards is the /usr/ports mechanism which accomodates qmail distribution not unlike the qmail-src packages only without the feeling of being a total hack. As long as we're talking about distribution policy, does Dan have a page somewhere that says that all his software is offered under the same license? I mean not only does qmail get distributed as source-only in the Debian project, but also ezmlm and the ucspi-tcp bundle. This has always confused me as ucspi-tcp atleast doesn't have unreasonable installation guidelines by default, why is it being distributed as source only? -- Jamie Heilman http://wcug.wwu.edu/~jamie/ "We must be born with an intuition of mortality. Qmail accepts this email, but it does *not* relay it. At the time of receipt, qmail-smtpd does not know in detail what local addresses are valid. Given the complexities of dot-qmail files, including .qmail-default files, it can't reasonably know. So it accepts anything for a domain that's in rcpthosts, and it gets sorted out later. -- Photos: http://dd-b.lighthunters.net/ Minicon: http://www.mnstf.org/minicon Bookworms: http://ouroboros.demesne.com/ SF: http://www.dd-b.net/dd-b David Dyer-Bennet / Welcome to the future! / [EMAIL PROTECTED]

(so far i thought > it doesnt) That's a question about how the sending MTA works; and is thus irrelevant. By some process, which we don't care about, the sending MTA decides what envelope recipients there will be for a message. It then connects to our system and starts presenting those recipients. It presents them one at a time. We can accept some and reject others. We accept only those whose FQDN part is in rcpthosts (unless the RELAYCLIENT variable is set enablling relaying for this connection, in which case we accept *anything*). After presenting the recipients, the message data is transmitted, and we queue the result, and eventually qmail-send puts lspawn and/or rspawn to work on it. -- Photos: http://dd-b.lighthunters.net/ Minicon: http://www.mnstf.org/minicon Bookworms: http://ouroboros.demesne.com/ SF: http://www.dd-b.net/dd-b David Dyer-Bennet / Welcome to the future! / [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Impliment an LDAP lookup with mailboxes referenced to different LDAP servers via the data in a mySQL database, and be sure to add in content filtering so that no dirty jokes get through, and open to relay and consult ORBS, get yourself on the RBL list, and put the queue on a really small partition. Re: Real slow shutdown of RedHat 6.x
I do not know how the LWQ initscripts work, but probably they just try to terminate the qmail processes. If you have a lot of qmail-remotes running, it may take a while till all stop. You may insert a timeout in the initscripts: after, say, 120s sigkill the qmail processes. This way, you may get duplicate messages sent out, but you will not loose mail. Not a great solution, but if your shutdown is urgent, better than nothing. Mate

Yep, I have the locals set up with my domain(s). In this case, only one line is required in the assign file per domain. The domains should match the domains listed in /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains Qmail will read the /var/qmail/user/cdb file to determine what uid/gid and directory to have qmail-local deliver a message to. vpopmail also supports adding virtual users for accepting email being sent to domains in your /var/qmail/control/locals file. In this case, each new user would have two lines in the /var/qmail/users/assign file. And qmailadmin can not be used to admin these users. Re: xinetd and qmail-pop3d
Most of the people on the list either choose two methods: 1. The lazy method, use inetd. Works fine, and most systems are already setup for inetd. 2. The good method. Use tcpserver. tcpserver, also written by DJB is fast, stable, and can be secured much like inetd, but with more functionality. I dont have alot of experience with xinetd, but if you are going to do some work into getting it to work, you might want to look at using tcpserver instead. tcpserver can be found at: http://cr.yp.to/ucspi-tcp.html On Tue, 5 Sep 2000 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: | Hello, | | I have been trying to set up qmail and xinetd. Too often people take the premise that "rcpthosts lists the domains to accept mail for" (to paraphrase) and use that to make the conclusion that "no rcpthosts means accepting mail for no domains". Semi-OT: Allowing only specific email clients.
I'm currently brainstorming ways that a mail server can be modified to work only with specific email clients. Ideas like user authentication and different port numbers are good places to start, but other popular clients can be easily configured to accomodate these changes. One possibility I'm looking at is to have the client send a specific text string in its HELO or EHLO command. The server would then reject any connections that didn't have this text string. Is this viable? If so, how hard would it be modify qmail to work this way? I am adept at C programming and have even coded my own SMTP server in the past. Of course, if there's already a patch out there that does this, even better. I'm also open to other suggestions on how to make a server work with only specific clients. The clients will be coded in-house, so we will have complete control over the syntax the clients and servers use. At this point I'm not completely convinced my company needs to tie the servers specifically to their clients, but it's being bandied about, so I want to make sure I have a course of action ready should they decide this is the way to go. xinetd and qmail-pop3d
Hello, I have been trying to set up qmail and xinetd. No problem with the smtp part, it works perfectly... but I was unable to set up qmail-pop3d correctly. Anyone has experience with this? Is there any disadvantage to use xinetd with qmail? Thanks in advance Paco Gracia Director Técnico Amira Sistemas

RE: ORBS doesn't like me :(
Because you more often want a mail server to relay your mail than not to relay your mail. Why bother setting up rcpthosts if your server is firewalled off from the internet, being an internal mail handler/relay anyway? The 'allow' and 'deny' statements specify whether a tcp connection from a given IP address will be allowed or denied, not whether any messages passed over the connection will be accepted for delivery. rcpthosts is a list of domains for which your mailer will accept mail. You need to list the domains for which that machine should accept email. Take a look at the relaying doccumentation at http://www.qmail.org/, if you need to setup selective relaying (i.e. allowing certain people - your users - to use your machine to send their email) Regards, james -- James Raftery (JBR54) - Programmer Hostmaster - IE TLD Hostmaster IE Domain Registry - www.domainregistry.ie - (+353 1) 706 2375 "Managing 4000 customer domains with BIND has been a lot like herding cats." - Mike Batchelor, on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The lack of a rcpthosts file was *definitely* the problem. When you don't have this file, qmail's default behavior is to accept and relay email for the entire Internet. Having an ":allow" line in your tcp.smtp file won't affect your server's behavior one way or the other. This line tells tcpserver to accept connections from any remote host (besides those mentioned elsewhere in the tcp.smtp file), but don't modify any environment variables during the session (such as RELAYCLIENT). This is tcpserver's default behavior anyway, so the only reason to have this line is for the sake of readability. Note that allowing a host to make a connection is not the same thing as allowing that host to use your server as a relay. So, the short answer is, now that you have a rcpthosts file again, ORBS will stop blacklisting you. ---Kris Kelley

You need the :allow to let other servers on the net connect to your machine to deliver mail to you. rcpthosts should exist and contain domains for which you will accept mail -- typically the contents of the files 'locals' plus virtualdomains and perhaps a few others (backup MX, etc). QMTP
Where would I find detailed specs on the QMTP protocol? I've found some stuff at http://cr.yp.to/proto/qmtp.txt, but I need more. We're writing a little piece of code that's going to sit on a couple of hundred Win2000 webservers that can talk QMTP to our qmail box for faster delivery. Users come to our site and sign up for automatically generated charts and other such things and the webservers generate the content for the email and send it off using SMTP right now. We need to speed this up as much as possible, and QMTP looks like the best way to do it since we already have a qmail box sending most of our other subscriber mail. We also have several QMQP servers. Would it maybe be better to make it talk QMQP to the boxes running qmail-qmqpd? = Here's my setup below in case anyone is wondering (warning: may be confusing without a picture): I have one main machine that runs ezmlm and a full version of qmail, it also runs a second copy of qmail (actually mini-qmail, we'll get to that in a minute). qmail-qmqpc is modified on the machine to load balance between all of my QMQP servers. I can add QMQP servers as necessary if the load gets to high on the rest of them. The full version of qmail is running to handle bounces, and to accept mail from webservers. Ezmlm-idx is set up to use QMQP for delivery, so messages being sent out get distributed to multiple QMQP servers. If the email comes in from a webserver, box running ezmlm would try to send it off itself... I didn't want that to happen because I want to keep the disk activity and other resources down as much as possible, so the logical choice would be to offload all mail not destined for the local box to the QMQP servers. Since I couldn't figure out a better way to do it, I installed a copy of mini-qmail with qmail-smtpd listening on port 26, and my modified qmail-qmqpc. smtproutes is set up so all outgoing mail goes to mini-qmail (on port 26) which distributes it to the QMQP servers. I wish smtproutes would let you specify a protocol to use... :) So the way this is set up, all outgoing mail gets sent to QMQP servers to let them handle the queueing and sending. Main destined for the local machine is still accepted and processed normally. Right now, I have 2 bottlenecks... The SMTP connection that the webservers use to send mail through it, and the SMTP connection to port 26 that the main copy of qmail redirects outgoing mail to. -- Jay Austad Network Administrator CBS Marketwatch 612.817.1271 [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://cbs.marketwatch.com http://www.bigcharts.com

imap response problem
Hi, I have a problem when I try to forward mails from my back up qmail server to MS Exchange server. that is if there are more than one mail in the queue that qmail try to flush out, qmail can only get one "/Remote host say 250ok " response with all mails go through( i got all mails). So it can only clean one mail out the queue but keep all the others and never try redeliver till i restart qmail, it resend all remaining mails get another 250ok ande remove another message from queue. 250ok appears randomly not always the first message that been delivered. May someone help me that what may cause this problem? Thanks for your help MinF
